  • Binding on a port with netpipes/netcat

    - by mindas
I am trying to write a simple bash script that is listening on a port and responding with a trivial HTTP response. My specific issue is that I am not sure if the port is available and in case of bind failure I fall back to next port until bind succeeds. So far to me the easiest way to achieve this was something like: for (( i=$PORT_BASE; i < $(($PORT_BASE+$PORT_RANGE)); i++ )) do if [ $DEBUG -eq 1 ] ; then echo trying to bind on $i fi /usr/bin/faucet $i --out --daemon echo test 2>/dev/null if [ $? -eq 0 ] ; then #success? port=$i if [ $DEBUG -eq 1 ] ; then echo "bound on port $port" fi break fi done Here I am using faucet from netpipes Ubuntu package. The problem with this is that if I simply print "test" to the output, curl complains about non-standard HTTP response (error code 18). That's fair enough as I don't print HTTP-compatible response. If I replace echo test with echo -ne "HTTP/1.0 200 OK\r\n\r\ntest", curl still complains: user@server:$ faucet 10020 --out --daemon echo -ne "HTTP/1.0 200 OK\r\n\r\ntest" ... user@client:$ curl ip.of.the.server:10020 curl: (56) Failure when receiving data from the peer I think the problem lies in how faucet is printing the response and handling the connection. For example if I do the server side in netcat, curl works fine: user@server:$ echo -ne "HTTP/1.0 200 OK\r\n\r\ntest\r\n" | nc -l 10020 ... user@client:$ curl ip.of.the.server:10020 test user@client:$ I would be more than happy to replace faucet with netcat in my main script, but the problem is that I want to spawn independent server process to be able to run client from the same base shell. faucet has a very handy --daemon parameter as it forks to background and I can use $? (exit status code) to check if bind succeeded. If I was to use netcat for a similar purpose, I would have to fork it using & and $? would not work. Does anybody know why faucet isn't responding correctly in this particular case and/or can suggest a solution to this problem. I am not married neither to faucet nor netcat but would like the solution to be implemented using bash or it's utilities (as opposed to write something in yet another scripting language, such as Perl or Python).

  • How are python pages coded and what can the language be compared to? [closed]

    - by avon_verma
I have a few questions about python I've seen many pages like these on Google http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6583 https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/topic.py?topic=13488 ...that have .py extensions. 1: Are pages like these built on pure python code, but printing out html like print "<div etc..." or like the typical asp, jsp, php type of pages with html pages and embedded python code like: <html> <% some python code %> </html> 2: What is python mainly used for making? windows apps or web or .. ? 3: Are ruby and perl also similar to python?

  • Exhaustive (or even just large) list of languages/stacks used for popular sites?

    - by jacko
As a result of a conversation with a colleague today, I've been searching (unsuccessfully) for a large'ish list of what technology stacks are being used popular websites and standalone applications today. We're aware of the big ones like Facebook (php/ ), Twitter (scala/cassandra), Youtube (python/?), Digg (php/cassandra), stackoverflow (.net mvc/sqlserver), but we're looking for a more complete list. It would also be interesting to hear about any stats for desktop apps also? Can anyone help?

  • What language is better suited for P2P video streaming?

    - by Roman
I would like to write a Skype like software which allows P2P video/audio streaming. What language is better suited for that? There are several requirements: Software should be easy to install. It should be easy to program. I want to have access to video information. For example to make a face expression recognition on the fly. It should be free. I am thinking of Python and Java. Which one would be better? Or may be there is a third choice which is better? ADDED Flash is an attractive option since users can use their browser in which flash is installed by default and if not, it's easy to install flash. But I do not know if I can have access to video (if I want to do some processing). Moreover, Flash is not free.

  • How much one can trust the information published in the wikipedia? [closed]

    - by AKN
Wikipedia has answers for many question almost in all categories. Let it be Technical Sports Personalities Important events (this day, that day) Scientific terms etc... I know the source of contents are from volunteers (Please correct me if I'm wrong here). But what measures they have to ensure that contents are properly written. Even if they have admin/moderator and all that, they may not be experts in all areas. So how do they validate the appropriateness of the content?

  • How to start an Open Source Software development

    - by harigm
I have an idea to start a Open Source Software using Java and PHP, I am so sure that software will help many individuals in their daily routine. Can Any one suggest me how to start the process ? Do we need to register some where and submit our idea for an approval before we start development? Any license that we need to get? How to invite the people for the open source development community, if they are interested? If any people who contributes Do we need to get any agreement signed off? once the Open Source product is stabilized who will have the ownership?

  • Waiting for data via select not working

    - by BSchlinker
    I'm currently working on a project which involves multiple clients connected to a server and waiting for data. I'm using select and monitoring the connection for incoming data. However, the client just continues to print nothing, acting as if select has discovered incoming data. Perhaps I'm attacking this wrong? For the first piece of data the server does send, it is displayed correctly. However, the server then disconnects and the client continues to spew blank lines. FD_ZERO(&readnet); FD_SET(sockfd, &readnet); while(1){ rv = select(socketdescrip, &readnet, NULL, NULL, &timeout); if (rv == -1) { perror("select"); // error occurred in select() } else if (rv == 0) { printf("Connection timeout! No data after 10 seconds.\n"); } else { // one or both of the descriptors have data if (FD_ISSET(sockfd, &readnet)) { numbytes = recv(sockfd, buf, sizeof buf, 0); printf("Data Received\n"); buf[numbytes] = '\0'; printf("client: received '%s'\n",buf); sleep(10); } } }

  • Using excel, how can I count the number of cells in a column containing the text "true" or "false"?

    - by Jay Elston
I have a spreadsheet that has a column of cells where each cell contains a single work. I would like to count the occurrences of some words. I can use the COUNTIF function for most words, but if the word is "true" or "false", I get 0. A B 1 apples 2 2 true 0 3 false 0 4 oranges 1 5 apples In the above spreadsheet table, I have these formulas in cells B1, B2, B3 and B4: =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"apples") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"true") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"false") =COUNTIF(A1:A5,"oranges) As you can see, I can count apples, but not true or false. I have also tried this: =COUNTIF(A1:A5,TRUE) But that does not work either. Note -- I am using Excel 2007.

  • Generating a python file

    - by fema
Hi! I'm havin issues with python (imo python itself is an issue). I have a txt file, it contains a custom language and I have to translate it to a working python code. The input: import sys n = int(sys.argv[1]) ;;print "Beginning of the program!" LOOP i in range(1,n) {print "The number:";;print i} BRANCH n < 5 {print n ;;print "less than 5"} The wanted output looks exactly like this: import sys n = int(sys.argv[1]) print "Beginning of the program!" for i in range(1,n) : print "The number:" print i if n < 5 : print n print "less than 5" The name of the input file is read from parameter. The out file is out.py. In case of a wrong parameter, it gives an error message. The ;; means a new line. When I tried to do it, I made an array, I read all the lines into it, split by " ". Then I wanted to strip it from the marks I don't need. I made 2 loops, one for the lines, one for the words. So then I started to replace the things. Everything went fine until it came to the } mark. It finds it, but it can not replace or strip it. I have no more idea what to do. Could someone help me, please? Thanks in advance!

  • What's the best way to implement a dynamic proxy in C#?

    - by gap
Hi, I've got a need to create a dynamic proxy in C#. I want this class to wrap another class, and take on it's public interface, forwarding calls for those functions: class MyRootClass { public virtual void Foo() { Console.Out.WriteLine("Foo!"); } } interface ISecondaryInterface { void Bar(); } class Wrapper<T> : ISecondaryInterface where T: MyRootClass { public Wrapper(T otherObj) { } public void Bar() { Console.Out.WriteLine("Bar!"); } } Here's how I want to use it: Wrapper<MyRootClass> wrappedObj = new Wrapper<MyRootClass>(new MyRootClass()); wrappedObj.Bar(); wrappedObj.Foo(); to produce: Bar! Foo! Any ideas? What's the easiest way to do this? What's the best way to do this? Thanks so much.

  • Collaborative kernel development

    - by Raffo
Hi, I have to develop a patch for the linux kernel (2.6) for an university course I'm attending. I have to develop this patch with a friend of mine and we need to edit the same files on our computers (2-3 PCs). So, we want to use something like a collaborative editor and/or a version control system. The problem is that we never used something like that and that we cannot release our software as open source till we take the exam. Obviously, we're using linux. I'm here to ask you suggestions in order to manage our work in the best way. Thank you

  • Can you dynamically combine multiple conditional functions into one in Python?

    - by erich
I'm curious if it's possible to take several conditional functions and create one function that checks them all (e.g. the way a generator takes a procedure for iterating through a series and creates an iterator). The basic usage case would be when you have a large number of conditional parameters (e.g. "max_a", "min_a", "max_b", "min_b", etc.), many of which could be blank. They would all be passed to this "function creating" function, which would then return one function that checked them all. Below is an example of a naive way of doing what I'm asking: def combining_function(max_a, min_a, max_b, min_b, ...): f_array = [] if max_a is not None: f_array.append( lambda x: x.a < max_a ) if min_a is not None: f_array.append( lambda x: x.a > min_a ) ... return lambda x: all( [ f(x) for f in f_array ] ) What I'm wondering is what is the most efficient to achieve what's being done above? It seems like executing a function call for every function in f_array would create a decent amount of overhead, but perhaps I'm engaging in premature/unnecessary optimization. Regardless, I'd be interested to see if anyone else has come across usage cases like this and how they proceeded. Also, if this isn't possible in Python, is it possible in other (perhaps more functional) languages?
