Cliq Wireless questions

Heres the deal:
I am by no means a Linux expert, even less when it comes to the Android OS but lets see if we can't solve this problem.
The problem I am having is that on the Cliq we have a broadcom chip. In order to use the wireless card you must first insert the module into the kernel.
Fine:

BUT netcfg (or ifconfig in busybox) does not recognize that there is a wireless adapter there:

Do I need to specify the firmware with insmod?
Why are we trying to control the interface manually instead of through the Android API?
The Android API doesn't support ad-hoc connections as far as I can tell. The card, I am sure, most certainly can.
