in my asp.net MVC project i have an database connection with connectionstring: Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=dbname;Integrated Security=True All users can execute Stored Procedures on that connection and i want to log those users. so after each execution I store "User.Identity.Name" to another database. This work great on my development machine but after deployment, to access the site i have to go through a VPN-connention and then remote desktop to the same server that the IIS is running on and use a web-browser there. Then i get User.Identity.Name: "NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE". i would expect it to be the credentials i entered in remote desktop that have access to the database. any idea how i can get this to work? iis6 authentication: "windows authentication: enabled" web.config:

Hi, I am working on C#.DotNet windows application project, here i am using Infragistics control. In this project i want to add image over text control. This image contains two portion, 35% of image have white color another 65% of image have green color.In this image 2nd portion(green color) i have to display dynamic string , this string size may dynamically updating. But this string dont go first portion(white color) of image. For that i am using UltraLabel control. I have add image in UltraLabel ImageBackground property and TextHAlign set as Right. But here small 15 charecter string means appear only second portion(green color), 20 charecter string means appeaer second & first portion. I don't want to display first portion of image. Thanks

I have a table with start and end dates in. My goal is to have a table that has grouped these dates into how many days the period spans. I thought I had the solution with a simple SQL statement (MS SQL Server 2005) but I want to exclude weekends. SELECT DATEDIFF(D, StartDate, EndDate)+1 AS Days, COUNT(ID) as Count FROM myDateTable GROUP BY DATEDIFF(D, StartDate, EndDate) This gives a record set of: Days Count 1 4 2 2 4 1 7 2 Is this possible to exclude the weekends in the SQL statement and if not can it be done using ASP and a array perhaps?

Can I run multiple websites under a single membership database?

Hi all, I'm trying to plan a series of websites that all share many of the resources such as css/jscript/images/content etc. For this reason I wanted to run all of the websites under the same application and IIS profile, but depending on the URL being used change the masterpage and theme/skin. The ASP.NET membership database seems as if it was designed with this goal in mind because it allows you to setup multiple applications, however I believe the purpose for which this was built was to allow applications to be run under virtual directories/fodlers, not on seperate urls. What would be the best approach for this?

I have a site which has an area that requires authentication. Right now I use the roles attribute on all the controllers in that area, and I run a query to retrieve that users ID, and all their settings. It seems like a code or design smell to me that I am retrieving the userid and settings each time a controller in that area loads up? I'm not sure if I should be using sessions, or if ASP.Net MVC 2.0 provides some unique way to handle this. Another concern is security. Overall, I don't really know which way to turn. Design wise I would like the userId and settings retrieved only once when the user logs into the area. Right now I grab the userId each time a controller loads up, and then if required, I query the database for their settings each time as well.

CSS file not getting downloaded in Visual Studio 2008 SP?

Hi guys, This might sound a little wierd, but all of a sudden the CSS and Javascript files referenced in my master page are not being downloaded while the page is being rendered. I am working on a ASP.NET MVC project and things were all fine like half an hour ago! Here is what I have in head section of the master page, <link href="/Content/MyCSS.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /> <script src="/Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> I can see the CSS class intellisense while designing pages. But in the page source I do not see these files being added. I can see the css being applied in the VS designer. I have tried restarting VS, restarting my machine too. Anyone else faced this situation before. I might go crazy now.

CSV file download ignored in ie8/9

I have some code in a button click event which gets a csv string from a hidden input and writes it to the response as a CSV file. This work fine in Chrome, Firefox, ie7, ie9 in quirks mode. However it does not work in ie8 or ie9 default. Looking at this in fiddler the csv is being written to the response but the another get request is being made immediately after and the page reloads. Viewstate seems to be hijacked inadvertently

Hi, we are using asp.net 2.x, we use session state stored in sql server, 2 web servers in loadbalance, iis6. our issue is that in the last 3 months we have had 2 cases where some one using our enquiry form has seen someone else's info e.g. first name and last name. We are not populating the form from objects in session so I have come to the conclusion that the second user has somehow received the viewstate from the first user, after that user has tried to submit and got an error e.g. has posted view state and returned the the same page and the other user has requested that page at the same time (must have been on the same server I am guessing if it is a viewstate issue). have any of you experienced this before? some questions mulling around in my head is how does the worker process know to retun view state to a unique request and how does it determine a unique request etc..

Using Apache FOP from .NET level

In one of my previous posts I was talking about FO.NET which I was using to generate a pdf documents from XSL-FO. FO.NET is one of the .NET ports of Apache FOP. Unfortunatelly it is no longer maintained. I known it when I decidec to use it, because there is a lack of available (free) choices for .NET to render a pdf form XSL-FO. I hoped in this implementation I will find all I need to create a pdf file with my really simple requirements. FO.NET is a port from some old version of Apache FOP and I found really quickly that there is a lack of some features that I needed, like dotted borders, double borders or support for margins. So I started to looking for some alternatives. I didn’t try the NFOP, another port of Apache FOP, because I found something I think much more better, the IKVM.NET project. IKVM.NET it is not a pdf renderer. So what it is? From the project site: IKVM.NET is an implementation of Java for Mono and the Microsoft .NET Framework. It includes the following components: a Java Virtual Machine implemented in .NET a .NET implementation of the Java class libraries tools that enable Java and .NET interoperability In the simplest form IKVM.NET allows to use a Java code library in the C# code and vice versa. I tried to use an Apache FOP, the best I think open source pdf –> XSL-FO renderer written in Java from my project written in C# using an IKVM.NET and it work like a charm. In the rest of the post I want to show, how to prepare a .NET *.dll class library from Apache FOP *.jar’s with IKVM.NET and generate a simple Hello world pdf document. To start playing with IKVM.NET and Apache FOP we need to download their packages: IKVM.NET Apache FOP and then unpack them. From the FOP directory copy all the *.jar’s files from lib and build catalogs to some location, e.g. d:\fop. Second step is to build the *.dll library from these files. On the console execute the following comand: ikvmc –target:library –out:d:\fop\fop.dll –recurse:d:\fop The ikvmc is located in the bin subdirectory where you unpacked the IKVM.NET. You must execute this command from this catalog, add this path to the global variable PATH or specify the full path to the bin subdirectory. In no error occurred during this process, the fop.dll library should be created. Right now we can create a simple project to test if we can create a pdf file. So let’s create a simple console project application and add reference to the fop.dll and the IKVM dll’s: IKVM.OpenJDK.Core and IKVM.OpenJDK.XML.API. I didn’t find a way to replace this piece of code with equivalent from .NET standard library. If any error or warning will occure during generating the pdf file, on the console will ge shown, that’s why I inserted the last line in the sample above. The DotNetOutputMemoryStream this is my wrapper for the Java OutputStream. I have created it to have the possibility to exchange data between the .NET <-> Java objects. Server side Xforms form validation and integration into ASP.NET

I have recently been investigating methods of creating web-based forms for an ASP.NET web application that can be edited and managed at runtime. For example an administrator might wish to add a new validation rule or a new set of fields. The holy grail would provide a means of specifying a form along with (potentially very complex) arbitrary validation rules, and allocation of data sources for each field. The specification would then be used to update the deployed form in the web application which would then validate submissions both on the client side and on the server side. My investigations led me to Xforms and a number of technologies that support it. One solution appears to be IBM Lotus Forms, but this requires a very large investment in terms of infrastructure, which makes it infeasible, although the forms designer may be useful as a stand-alone tool for creating the forms. I have also discounted browser plug-ins as the form must be publicly visible and cross-browser compliant. I have noticed that there are numerous javascript libraries that provide client side implementations given an Xforms schema. These would provide a partial solution but server side validation is still a requirement. Another option seems to involve the use of server side solutions such as the Java application Orbeon. Orbeon provides a tool for specifying the forms (although not as rich as Lotus Forms Designer), but the most interesting point is that it can translate an XForms schema into an XHTML form complete with validation. The fact that it is written in Java is not a big problem if it is possible to integrate with the existing ASP.NET application. So my question is whether anyone has done this before. It sounds like a problem that should have been solved but is inherently very complex. It seems possible to use an off-the-shelf tool to design the form and export it to an Xforms schema and xhtml form, and it seems possible to take that xforms schema and form and publish it using a client side library. What seems to be difficult is providing a means of validating the form submission on the server side and integrating the process nicely with .NET (although it seems the .NET community doesn't involve themselves with XForms; please correct me if I'm wrong on this count). I would be more than happy if a product provided something simple like a web service that could validate a submission against a schema. Maybe Orbeon does this but I'd be grateful if somebody in the know could point me in the right direction before I research it further. Many thanks.

SQL Server source control from Visual Studio

Developers have long since had to context switch between two IDEs, Visual Studio for application code development and SQL Server Management Studio for database development. While this is accepted, especially given the richness of the database development feature set in SSMS, loading a separate tool can seem a little overkill. This is where SQL Connect comes in. This is an add-in to Visual Studio that provides a connected development experience for the SQL Server developer. Connected database development involves modifying a development sandbox database, as opposed to offline development, where SQL text files are modified independently of the database. One of the main complaints of Data Dude (VS DBPro) is that it enforces the offline approach. This gripe is what SQL Connect addresses. If you don't already use SQL Source Control, you can get up and running with SQL Connect by adding a new project to your Visual Studio solution as follows: Then choose your existing development database and you're ready to go. If you already use SQL Source Control, you will need to link SQL Connect to your existing database scripts folder repository, so SQL Connect and SQL Source Control can be used collaboratively (note that SQL Source Control v.3.0.9.18 or later is required). Locate the repository (this can be found in the Setup tab in SQL Source Control). .and create a working folder for it (here I'm using TortoiseSVN). Back in Visual Studio, locate the SQL Connect panel (in the View menu if it hasn't auto loaded) and select Import SQL Source Control project Locate your working folder and click Import. This creates a Red Gate database project under your solution: From here you can modify your development database, and manage your changes in source control. To associate your development database with the project, right click on the project node, select Properties, set the database and Save. Now you're ready to make some changes. Locate the object you'd like to modify in the Solution Explorer, and double click it to invoke a query window or table designer. You also have the option to edit the creation SQL directly using Edit SQL File in Project. Keeping the development database and Visual Studio project in sync is as easy as clicking on a button. One you've made your change, you can use whichever mechanism you choose to commit to source control. Here I'm using the free open-source AnkhSVN to integrate Subversion with Visual Studio. Maintaining your database in a Visual Studio solution means that you can commit database changes and application code changes in the same changeset. This is desirable if you have continuous integration set up as you want to ensure that all files related to a change are committed atomically, so you avoid an interim "broken build". The application works great if request is to default.aspx, not to the root site: contoso.com/ - doesn't work (Get 404 error) contoso.com/default.aspx - works. Default.aspx is in list of default documents in IIS. Please help.

Adding row to Datalist

I have been searching around the web for a solution to this issue but have come across nothing so far. Basically I have a table as shown below, whhich i made up of itemtemplate fields and is populated by a dataset from my database. It shows brands to the user of which they can then click and go onto another page. I need to add another option to the table called "All Brands". Thus then I can use this to go to a page showing all the brands.
