• How do you composite an image onto another image with PIL in Python?

- by Sebastian
I need to take an image and place it onto a new, generated white background in order for it to be converted into a downloadable desktop wallpaper. So the process would go: 1) Generate new, all white image with 1440x900 dimensions 2) Place existing image on top, centered 3) Save as single image In PIL, I see the ImageDraw object, but nothing indicates it can draw existing image data onto another image. Suggestions or links anyone can recommend?

• Escaping escape Characters

- by Alix Axel
I'm trying to mimic the json_encode bitmask flags implemented in PHP 5.3.0, here is the string I have: $s = addslashes('O\'Rei"lly'); // O\'Rei"lly Doing json_encode($str, JSON_HEX_APOS | JSON_HEX_QUOT) outputs the following: "O'Rei"lly" And I'm currently doing this in PHP versions older than 5.3.0: str_replace(array('"', "\\'"), array('"', '''), json_encode($s)) or str_replace(array('"', '\\\''), array('"', '''), json_encode($s)) Which correctly outputs the same result: "O'Rei"lly" I'm having trouble understanding why do I need to replace single quotes ('\\\'' or even "\\'" [surrounding quotes excluded]) with ''' and not just '''.

• Floating point mantissa bias

- by user69514
Does anybody know how to go out solving this problem? * a = 1.0 × 2^9 * b = -1.0 × 2^9 * c = 1.0 × 2^1 Using the floating-point (the representation uses a 14-bit format, 5 bits for the exponent with a bias of 16, a normalized mantissa of 8 bits, and a single sign bit for the number), perform the following two calculations, paying close attention to the order of operations. * b + (a + c) = ? * (b + a) + c = ?

• Accessing Sabre Web Services using PHP

- by Peter
I have been approached to create a website using Sabre Web Services to power the reservations system. All documentation I have seen refers to .NET or Java solutions, I was in doubt whether PHP can be used as access is performed using SOAP. I have found no further information about this, I assume the answer is yes, but wonder why there is not a single reference to this being possible - all solutions seem to be .NET Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Best Practices / Patterns for Enterprise Protection/Remediation of SSNs (Social Security Numbers)

- by Erik Neu
I am interested in hearing about enterprise solutions for SSN handling. (I looked pretty hard for any pre-existing post on SO, including reviewing the terriffic SO automated "Related Questions" list, and did not find anything, so hopefully this is not a repeat.) First, I think it is important to enumerate the reasons systems/databases use SSNs: (note—these are reasons for de facto current state—I understand that many of them are not good reasons) Required for Interaction with External Entities. This is the most valid case—where external entities your system interfaces with require an SSN. This would typically be government, tax and financial. SSN is used to ensure system-wide uniqueness. SSN has become the default foreign key used internally within the enterprise, to perform cross-system joins. SSN is used for user authentication (e.g., log-on) The enterprise solution that seems optimum to me is to create a single SSN repository that is accessed by all applications needing to look up SSN info. This repository substitutes a globally unique, random 9-digit number (ASN) for the true SSN. I see many benefits to this approach. First of all, it is obviously highly backwards-compatible—all your systems "just" have to go through a major, synchronized, one-time data-cleansing exercise, where they replace the real SSN with the alternate ASN. Also, it is centralized, so it minimizes the scope for inspection and compliance. (Obviously, as a negative, it also creates a single point of failure.) This approach would solve issues 2 and 3, without ever requiring lookups to get the real SSN. For issue #1, authorized systems could provide an ASN, and be returned the real SSN. This would of course be done over secure connections, and the requesting systems would never persist the full SSN. Also, if the requesting system only needs the last 4 digits of the SSN, then that is all that would ever be passed. Issue #4 could be handled the same way as issue #1, though obviously the best thing would be to move away from having users supply an SSN for log-on. • how can I get _NET_WORKAREA for seperate monitors

- by Chris Camacho
using gdk_screen_get_monitor_geometry (xrandr) I can get the resolutions for separate monitors (for example when there are 2 monitors used as a single screen like nvidias twinview) However _NET_WORKAREA seems to give one giant area even if the resolution of the other monitor is smaller. (a panel at the bottom of the second monitor would appear to be inside this work area) How can I get the actual workarea of other monitors even getting struts there seems no support for separate monitors just the main one...

• some unclear php "symbolics"

- by serhio
I am a php beginner and seed on the forum such a php expression: $regex = <<<'END' / ( [\x00-\x7F] # single-byte sequences 0xxxxxxx | [\xC0-\xDF][\x80-\xBF] # double-byte sequences 110xxxxx 10xxxxxx | [\xE0-\xEF][\x80-\xBF]{2} # triple-byte sequences 1110xxxx 10xxxxxx * 2 | [\xF0-\xF7][\x80-\xBF]{3} # quadruple-byte sequence 11110xxx 10xxxxxx * 3 ) | ( [\x80-\xBF] ) # invalid byte in range 10000000 - 10111111 | ( [\xC0-\xFF] ) # invalid byte in range 11000000 - 11111111 /x END; is this code correct? what should mean some strange (4 me) constructions like <<< 'END' / /x and END; thanks

• System.Web.Routing.UrlRoutingModule and Ingragistics WebHtmlEditor - one or other not both

- by Krishna
Hi- I have a website created in VS 2008 using asp.net v3.5. My requirement is to add both Routing and Infragistics controls the website. But noticed, I can have only one of these working - not both. My infragistics control works if I remove the following from web.config But by removing it- routing would not work. Is there a way I can have both infragistics and routing working in a single website? Thanks so much.

• Trouble with this Python newbie exercise. Using Lists and finding if two adjacent elements are the s

- by Sergio Tapia
Here's what I got: # D. Given a list of numbers, return a list where # all adjacent == elements have been reduced to a single element, # so [1, 2, 2, 3] returns [1, 2, 3]. You may create a new list or # modify the passed in list. def remove_adjacent(nums): for number in nums: numberHolder = number # +++your code here+++ return I'm kind of stuck here. What can I do?

• Is it too early to start designing for Task Parallel Library?

- by Joe Erickson
I have been following the development of the .NET Task Parallel Library (TPL) with great interest since Microsoft first announced it. There is no doubt in my mind that we will eventually take advantage of TPL. What I am questioning is whether it makes sense to start taking advantage of TPL when Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0 are released, or whether it makes sense to wait a while longer. Why Start Now? The .NET 4.0 Task Parallel Library appears to be well designed and some relatively simple tests demonstrate that it works well on today's multi-core CPUs. I have been very interested in the potential advantages of using multiple lightweight threads to speed up our software since buying my first quad processor Dell Poweredge 6400 about seven years ago. Experiments at that time indicated that it was not worth the effort, which I attributed largely to the overhead of moving data between each CPU's cache (there was no shared cache back then) and RAM. Competitive advantage - some of our customers can never get enough performance and there is no doubt that we can build a faster product using TPL today. It sounds fun. Yes, I realize that some developers would rather poke themselves in the eye with a sharp stick, but we really enjoy maximizing performance. Why Wait? Are today's Intel Nehalem CPUs representative of where we are going as multi-core support matures? You can purchase a Nehalem CPU with 4 cores which share a single level 3 cache today, and most likely a 6 core CPU sharing a single level 3 cache by the time Visual Studio 2010 / .NET 4.0 are released. Obviously, the number of cores will go up over time, but what about the architecture? As the number of cores goes up, will they still share a cache? One issue with Nehalem is the fact that, even though there is a very fast interconnect between the cores, they have non-uniform memory access (NUMA) which can lead to lower performance and less predictable results. Will future multi-core architectures be able to do away with NUMA? Similarly, will the .NET Task Parallel Library change as it matures, requiring modifications to code to fully take advantage of it? Limitations Our core engine is 100% C# and has to run without full trust, so we are limited to using .NET APIs.

• Python XMLRPC with concurrent requests

- by MattB
I'm looking for a way to prevent multiple hosts from issuing simultaneous commands to a Python XMLRPC listener. The listener is responsible for running scripts to perform tasks on that system that would fail if multiple users tried to issue these commands at the same time. Is there a way I can block all incoming requests until the single instance has completed?

• How do I stop Emacs automatically inserting hyphens at the beginning of new lines in fundamental fil

- by Bryce Thomas
Hi there, I'm jotting down some notes in Emacs in Fundamental Fill mode. I'm starting each one of my notes with a "-" on a new line. The problem is, whenever one of the notes I'm writing is too long to fit on a single line, it gets pushed down to the next line (which I want to happen) but Emacs goes ahead and automatically inserts another "-" for me out the front on the new line (which I don't want to happen). Is there a way to stop Emacs from exhibiting this "helpful" behaviour?

• Trying to set the message-id, in-reply-to, etc... in ActionMailer

- by Ryan
I'm working on an app that needs to be able to send out email updates and then route the reply back to the original item. All emails will come to a single address (this can't change unfortunately), and I need to be able to determine where they go. My initial thought was setting the message-id for the item so that it comes back as a References header. any ideas on how to accomplish this with ActionMailer?

• Is there a way to tell .NET where to look for the user settings file?

- by Davy8
Basically multiple instances of our application will be launched but they need to have separate user settings. We currently have use "user settings" for that, and it works fine for a single instance (per windows user) but we would like to be able to launch multiple instances with say a settings path passed in via command line. Is there a way to do this with the built-in .NET settings or will we have to roll our own?

• Splitting TIFF Files on different formats using .NET

- by Jojo
HI All, I have below code to extract a single page from a multi-paged TIFF file. The problem is, the input file is in CCITT Group 4 compression however the output compression is LZW. Can .NET outputs TIFF files other than this compression? FileStream fileStream = File.Open(outputFileName, FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite); sourceImage.SelectActiveFrame(firstFrameDimension, pageNumbers[i]); sourceImage.Save(fileStream, ImageFormat.Tiff); fileStream.Close();
