  • Visual Studio 2010 - Is it slow for anyone else?

    - by AngryHacker
I've read a lot of stuff about VS2010 being much more performant than VS2008. When I've finally installed it, I found that it, in fact, is much slower (save for the Add References dialog). For instance, Silverlight projects take twice as long to load, the startup of the IDE itself is much slower, etc... Am I missing something here or is it like this for everyone?

  • Windows mobile phone wireless connection - never mind

    - by user01254
Could anyone please point me to a good tutorial on how to connect a Windows Mobile 6 device to a wireless connection shared on Windows XP ? That is the PC shares the wireless connection (add hoc network ?) and the device connects via Internet Explorer to a server that runs on the PC. I searched a lot and did not find a tutorial that addresses my problem. All were either outdated, either incomplete or incorrect. NEVER MIND.

  • Applications of concurrent queues and stacks in .NET 4

    - by Jon Harrop
.NET 4 includes new concurrent data structures. The Bag and Dictionary collections have obvious applications but I cannot see any use for the Queue and Stack data structures. What are people using these for? Also, I've noticed that the design based upon linked lists incurs a lot of allocation and that destroys scalability. This is surprising given that the sole purpose of these collections is multicore programming. Is this an inherent limitation or are they just badly implemented?

  • Big O Complexity of a method

    - by timeNomad
I have this method: public static int what(String str, char start, char end) { int count=0; for(int i=0;i<str.length(); i++) { if(str.charAt(i) == start) { for(int j=i+1;j<str.length(); j++) { if(str.charAt(j) == end) count++; } } } return count; } What I need to find is: 1) What is it doing? Answer: counting the total number of end occurrences after EACH (or is it? Not specified in the assignment, point 3 depends on this) start. 2) What is its complexity? Answer: the first loops iterates over the string completely, so it's at least O(n), the second loop executes only if start char is found and even then partially (index at which start was found + 1). Although, big O is all about worst case no? So in the worst case, start is the 1st char & the inner iteration iterates over the string n-1 times, the -1 is a constant so it's n. But, the inner loop won't be executed every outer iteration pass, statistically, but since big O is about worst case, is it correct to say the complexity of it is O(n^2)? Ignoring any constants and the fact that in 99.99% of times the inner loop won't execute every outer loop pass. 3) Rewrite it so that complexity is lower. What I'm not sure of is whether start occurs at most once or more, if once at most, then method can be rewritten using one loop (having a flag indicating whether start has been encountered and from there on incrementing count at each end occurrence), yielding a complexity of O(n). In case though, that start can appear multiple times, which most likely it is, because assignment is of a Java course and I don't think they would make such ambiguity. Solving, in this case, is not possible using one loop... WAIT! Yes it is..! Just have a variable, say, inc to be incremented each time start is encountered & used to increment count each time end is encountered after the 1st start was found: inc = 0, count = 0 if (current char == start) inc++ if (inc > 0 && current char == end) count += inc This would also yield a complexity of O(n)? Because there is only 1 loop. Yes I realize I wrote a lot hehe, but what I also realized is that I understand a lot better by forming my thoughts into words...

  • How to change executable icon from c# code? (not my app icon)

    - by flyout
How can I change *.EXEs icons from c# code (not my main app icon but from that app i want to change the icon of another exe). I eventually would have to change the icons for A LOT of files so I am looking for a fast and good performance way to do it. I have been googling for 30min but all I found is how to set the icon for the app in VS.

  • Speeding up Math calculations in Java

    - by Simon
I have a neural network written in Java which uses a sigmoid transfer function defined as follows: private static double sigmoid(double x) { return 1 / (1 + Math.exp(-x)); } and this is called many times during training and computation using the network. Is there any way of speeding this up? It's not that it's slow, it's just that it is used a lot, so a small optimisation here would be a big overall gain.

  • from Hibernate hbm to JPA annotations, a challenging one

    - by nodje
Hi, I've been struggling with this one for quite some time already. It appears a lot less simple than I thought it'd be: This is included in the "COTISATION" table mapping an uses SynchroDataType, extending Hibernate UserType. This works really great, and I can't find a way to translate it to proper JPA, while keeping the convenience of it. Does someone has a solution for that kind of one-to-one mapping? cheers

  • Resizing Grid Views On Window Resize

    - by Jack Mills
I'm making a small Windows Forms application that contains a lot of grid views. I want all the grid views to resize with the window. I could make a function that detects window resize and then changes the size of each grid view but that feels a bit clunky. Is there not an easier/more intelligent way to do this

  • How to design the application to conform to the n-tier architecture? (Winform sample in .net with li

    - by AlexRednic
Rather a simple question. But the implications are vast. Over the last few weeks I've been reading a lot of material about n-tier architecture and it's implementation in the .NET world. The problem is I couldn't find a relevant sample for Winforms with Linq (linq is the way to go for BLL right?). How did you guys manage to grasp the n-tier concept? Books, articles, relevant samples etc.

  • Typedef in C# across several source files

    - by Danvil
I am writing a C wrapper an would like to use a typedef aquivalent to define some types which should be valid in quite a lot of source files. Those "types" are just different aliases to [u]int16/32/64_t, but are useful to distinguish function parameters. One could use using MyId=System.Int32;, but this needs to be redeclared in every file as far as I see... Is there a better way?

  • value of c define changes unexpectedly

    - by NomeN
I have a lot of #define's in my code. Now a weird problem has crept up. I have this: #define _ImmSign 010100 (I'm trying to simulate a binary number) Obviously, I expect the number to become 10100. But when I use the number it has changed into 4160. What is happening here? And how do I stop it?

  • Is it a good practice to always use smart pointers ?

    - by Dony Borris
Hi, I find smart pointers to be a lot more comfortable than raw pointers. So is it a good idea to always use smart pointers? ( Please note that I am from Java background and hence don't much like the idea of explicit memory management. So unless there are some serious performance issues with smart pointers, I'd like to stick with them. ) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Need image, text, youtube, etc. jquery modal overlay with long description

    - by Jason
Hi, I am looking for a jquery modal window script for displaying images, text, html, videos, etc. There are a lot of great ones out there, but I am looking for one that allows for a long description (that isn't pulled from the title) - like highslide that lets you have a caption and will display the photo text to the right or left of your image in the same modal window. Due to licensing, I can't use highslide. So I'm looking for something else. Thoughts?

  • When would you choose C# over F#? [closed]

    - by Rosdi
Possible Duplicate: What are the benefits of using C# vs F# or F# vs c#? There are a lot of general questions comparing functional programming vs object oriented. But I need to know the advantageous of F# over C#. Assuming you have the same skill/experience/expertise in both C# and F#, and there are no other constraints (time, team skills, etc) when would you choose C# over F# (or vice-verse)?**
