  I have ruby 1.8.x on: 1 x Snow Leopard n x CentOS (mostly are my clients) 1 x Windows XP Once recently I installed RVM to have multiple ruby versions on my Mac. Basically none of my production Rails projects is running on on 1.9.x ruby. So, what makes you to move to 1.9.x?

• Different characters take more/less data?

  I am working on a personal project and I'm wondering if certain characters take up more data in a text file than others. I need to choose a character to seperate items in my file, but if a 0 uses less bytes than a ! or something, it would be best to do that. I know all characters have an ASCII value, but would a lower ASCII value mean the character can be stored in fewer bytes? This might be an incredibly stupid question, but I don't see any information on the topic online so I came here to check. Thanks!

  Is there a way to tell scons to use a particular file to setup the default environment? I am using TI DSPs and the compiler is something different than cc; I'd like to have one "environment file" that defines where the compiler is, and what the default flags are, and then be able to use this for several projects.   Ok, I'll explain why I ask this question. I begin to read Lift 2.2 source code these days. In Lift, I found that, define inner class and inner trait are very heavily used. object Menu has 2 inner traits and 4 inner classes. object Loc has 18 inner classes, 5 inner traits, 7 inner objects. There're tons of codes write like this. I wanna to know why the author write it like this. Is it because it's the author's personal taste or a powerful use of language feature?

Unfortunately I can't seem to locate this actionpack-2.3.5.gemspec. It is in the directory for rails 3 but for 2.3.5 I don't see it.

• SQL Server Query with "ELSE:"

  I have various VB6 projects I'm maintaining with some of the queries being passed to the server having "ELSE:" with the colon used in case statements. I'm wondering can someone tell me what the **ll the colon is used for? It causes errors in SQL2005 and greater, but SQL2000 works with no complaints. I'd like to just remove it from the code & re-compile, but I'm afraid it'll break 10 other things in the application.. Thanks in advance...

• ReSharper 5 external sources in a .NET 4.0 project

  I've read about the ReSharper external sources feature in ReSharper 5. But when attempting to use it on a .NET 4.0 project, but my attempts to make it work / use it have failed. Whenever I attempt to navigate to "Sources from Symbol Files" - I just get the message that the symbols are not available. Are the debug symbols for .NET 4 not released yet or are they placed somewhere else? It works fine and downloads the proper symbols for .NET 3.5 projects.

• What license (eg. BSD, GPL, etc) can I use for an open source app that can be used commerically, for free?

  Hi folks, I've got an application on Codeplex. It's based on some other free open source code which comes with a BSD license. As such, people keep asking if they can use my open source code/library in their commercial apps. I want them to be able to, provided they give credit to the source app (the project which i based my code, from .. and that has the BSD license) and also my code. They can take my code and do whatever (fork it, etc).. Just make sure they give credit, of course. So - what license could I use? Currently, I've set it to be GPL .. so is that ok? NOTE: Yes yes, I know that any answers are not from a lawyer and it's just all personal thoughts and I need to consult a special lawyer if I want some professional advice, etc. etc. I'm happy to take that risk, here.

  Hey! Has anybody used a good obfuscator for PHP?, I've tried some but they dont work for very big projects. They can't handle variables that are included in one file and used in another, for instance. Or do you have any other tricks for stopping the spread of your great code? :)

Visual Studio doesn't name default documents in new projects all lowercase. I'm not sure it matters since browsing to http://www.mysite.com/mypage.aspx will still work even if your page is named MyPage.aspx. Can somebody enlighten me on this?
