• MCollective alternative?

  I really want to run MCollective on my fleet of servers however there are a large number of untrusted users on each machine which makes using MCollective not ideal in my eyes. I'm aware that there is some things you can do to take precaution but I'm not familiar enough with ActiveMQ / want something that's a bit more mindful of similar environments to mine outside the box. I'm looking for a fact collection like tool essentially. (Tagging under puppet / server since no mcollective tag and I don't have enough reputation to create a new one)

  I need to synchronize about 30GB of git repositories to S3. These repos may contain some very large pack files, on the rough order of 2GB. I know that S3 has recently added support for large objects, and has new APIs that allow the objects to be uploaded as several parallel chunks. Is there a good command-line tool for Linux that allows me to efficiently synchronize large objects with S3 in a fashion similar to s3sync?

  I'm getting repeated errors in my console log that look (basically) like this: 10-09-29 10:06:08 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[51581]) getpwuid("501") failed 10-09-29 10:06:08 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[51581]) Exited with exit code: 1 This machine was set up using the migration assistant, from a machine where my UID was 501, but here it's 505. I have the same username and group set, of course, but... So, where is this peruser launchd tool configured, so that I can disable the daemons that are causing this error message?

• Debug/step into a Linux boot

  Is there a way to watch Linux boot as though it was a program compiled with GCC on a Linux environment using the -g switch so, say, I can step through the entire boot sequence from GRUB onwards, choosing to step through at C source level or assembly when necessary/desirable, by using GDB or a GDB-like tool? I suspect it would require a virtual machine at least, to watch the boot on a host environment. Any elaboration on this topic of observing a boot would be appreciated!

• vi visual mode doesn't work

  I'm running vim (7.0.237) after sshing to a remote CentOS box, and it just won't enter visual mode. When I press 'v', it just beeps and does nothing. I'm running Ubuntu with GNOME Terminal, and the local copy of vi works fine, so I don't see how this could be a problem with the terminal. I have the same .vimrc file on the local and remote machines, and the only settings are: set nocompatible; set tabstop=4. I'm at a total loss here, any ideas?

Right now we are able to capture the audio and access the file through wireshark, but we would like to find a way to save the audio to a .wav file (or similar) via the command line. • HTC Sync Manager and MKV files

  My problem is pretty straight forward: HTC Sync manager works perfectly with my HTC One X. However, it filters extensions it's not able to use with it's stock applications. (HTC Sense) But 3rd party applications can handle other extensions of course. Is there a way to adjust the HTC Sync Manager so that extensions will not be filtered? And if that's not possible is there a syncronisation tool that synchronises automatically once the android device is connected through USB? (Tried Allway Sync, doesn't work properly)

  In Windows 7, Windows Explorer has a large bar just above the status bar that contains properties of the highlighted item. Is it possible to hide this? It takes up a significant amount of screen space I'd prefer using in the file listing. Also, is it possible to hide the tool bar for the same reason?   For reasons unknown, OpenSUSE seems to have half a dozen different places that mention auto-update. Is there a way I can definitely, permanently, irreversibly disable auto-update so that new software will never, ever, under any circumstances, be installed? Ideally I want to prevent the OS from even connecting to the Internet to see if any updates are available. I've unchecked half a dozen things, but I'm still getting alerts telling me updates are available. I do now want updates! I can't believe this is so hard to turn off... In case it makes any difference, OpenSUSE 12.2 with a GNOME desktop.

  I don't get it. Why is it so complicated to create a bootable usb from a disc image? Disc images have boot sectors, so why can't you just write the raw LBA values from an image directly to a USB and be done? I haven't see any tool for Windows that lets me do this.

• How to record desktop session with sound on Moblin?

  I have tried to record my desktop session with sound on a netbook running Moblin, but I can't seem to be able to record sound. xvidcap just says error accessing /dev/dsp. Are there some options I should pass to xvidcap? Should I use some other recording application? Update: I am using the latest xvidcap (1.1.7) and have read the FAQ. Unfortunately Moblin' gnome-volume-control looks nothing like what is linked to from the xvidcap FAQ; there is no way to to set or even look at the details the screenshot shows, as far as I know. alsamixer shows pulseaudio is used, if that gives anyone any clues. The device is Acer Aspire One.
