  • Interactive Charts for web application

    - by user227290
We are working on a web based application (implemented in JAVA) on commodity prices and one part of it is interactive charting. I provide a simplified example here. We have a table in Mysql database where we have information on commodity prices in US states and counties. One aspect of the application is to create interactive plots based on user choice. For example, if the user needs to see the price density in Oregon and Linn county then she chooses it from the menu in a webpage and it is rendered on fly with accompanying quantile information in a table. As the user changes state and county these plots and table change on fly.For our computational need we are using R (and use rjava to integrate it to our web application) and I know that if interactivity is not an issue this is a piece of cake in ggplot2, but I am not aware of any interactive version of R graphics framework (like lattice, ggplot2). We are exploring google visualization API but I am not sure we can have the statistical power we need in some of the plots. Please help.

  • Something wrong with deinstallation of GIT in Windows...

    - by Stef Joosten
I tried to remove GIT on my windows-XP, by means of the Windows/Configuration/Software menu. After some error message (which I cannot remember), it removed all files. I checked it, and there are no files with ptp in the name left on the entire system. A problem remained however: each time I opened windows-explorer, a nasty error message came calling for a dll file that wasn't there anymore. Anyone know what is going on here? A wild guess: could there be any interference between svn and git, if certain files are linked to both git and svn? Personally, I went to the registry. I found that many traces to GIT are left in the registry after deinstalling GIT the "windows-way". I removed each one carefully by hand, which seems to have solved my problem. This is of course a dangerous path, but I had no choice. Perhaps it is a good idea to look into the Windows-deinstallation script very carefully.

  • C++ assignment - stylish or performance?

    - by joejax
Having been writing Java code for many years, I was amazed when I see this C++ statement: int a,b; int c = (a=1, b=a+2, b*3); My question is: Is this a choice of coding style, or it has real benefit? (looking for a practicle use case) I think the compiler will see it the same as following: int a=1, b=a+2; int c = b*3; (What's the offical name for this? I assume it's a standard C/C++ syntax.)

  • Queued WCF Service which processes every X seconds

    - by Jeff Windsor
I need to create a service which can process queued requests on a configured time interval. For example go to the web and get financial data from a site the requires we limit requests to once per second. I am new to WCF and I am not sure if (1) WCF with MSMQ a proper choice for implementing this? and (2) if so what is the best mechanism for enforcing the interval? a thread wait? a timer (not sure how that would work).

  • Using SVN alone or in small workgroups - workflow approach?

    - by Industrial
Hi everybody, I have spent some months working on a web application and we're come close to production stage. It's soon time to expand the development group with 1-3 people on this project. I have not too much experience on working with SVN, but It's obviously the choice for a big part of the larger companies out there, so I am guessing that the pros of SVN without a doubt outweights the time spent on commit/check ins / check outs etc. The workflow seems to become a bit more complicated with SVN, and even though I have read Version Control with Subversion by O'Reilly Media and I am not sure yet if it's overkill to use SVN for any reasons besides backup when developing alone or in a small (1-3 people) workgroup? How do you do it? What's your workflow with version control while working alone or in small workgroups? Thanks!

  • iPhone SDK: Data Synchronization

    - by buzzappsoftware
I am looking for an overview of data synchronization techniques available on the iPhone platform. We need the ability to be able to sync a subset of content from a server to a local database residing on the iPhone. On other projects I have worked on, the data synchronization was handled by the database. Is that available in SQLite? If not, any suggestions on techniques? Rolling our own would not be my first choice. Thanks in advance.

  • Get Flickr Sets

    - by PaulAdamDavis
Hi everyone. Usual stuff, Googled forever, looked on here, no help. Yet. What I want is to list the sets of photos I have on Flickr. Nice & simple, it would seem. I want the 'title image' (the one used as the thumb for it on Flickr its self), the title and URL. Can't be that hard, can it? The language of choice is PHP (5.1.6), or JS (jQuery if possible). Both are good.

  • Junit test that creates other tests

    - by Benju
Normally I would have one junit test that shows up in my integration server of choice as one test that passes or fails (in this case I use teamcity). What I need for this specific test is the ability to loop through a directory structure testing that our data files can all be parsed without throwing an exception. Because we have 30,000+ files that that 1-5 seconds each to parse this test will be run in its own suite. The problem is that I need a way to have one piece of code run as one junit test per file so that if 12 files out of 30,000 files fail I can see which 12 failed not just that one failed, threw a runtimeexception and stopped the test. I realize that this is not a true "unit" test way of doing things but this simulation is very important to make sure that our content providers are kept in check and do not check in invalid files. Any suggestions?

  • can't make svn store password, even though the configuration is set to allow it

    - by davka
did everything the book says, i.e. removed the authentication files from .subversion/auth, and explicitly set the relevant config parameters to 'yes' even though this is a default, and yet the shell svn commands ask for password each time. The repository is on cvsdude.com, the client is linux. I also use the subclipse plugin that caches the password ok. I vaguely remember that when I started working with it, the command asked interactively if I wanted to save clear password, and I said no. Can this choice be stored somewhere and take precedence over the configuration? Thanks!

  • Lightweight open source CMS - current situation

    - by patrikas
Hello, It happened that I need to pick up PHP based open source CMS. I did a small research and found many candidates. CMS made simple seems to be right choice, but I am not sure what's the current state, I know it was widely used time ago. I need it to be fully compliant with web standarts, lightweight (especially interface). It needs to be as simple as possible - basically just style and page content editing (news, maybe some image gallery) is enough. Sure content and style have to be separated from each other since content will be edited by non-programmer. One of the main goals is SEO so I'd like it to have friendly URLs. I think CMSes like Joomla, Drupal and Wordpress are too big for this project. Are there any recommendations ?

  • What format is your documentation in?

    - by Ek0nomik
I am going to be writing documentation for two web services that I developed, and I started wondering what people on here do for documentation. Do you create it in an HTML file so it can be viewed in the browser? Word document? Wiki? What do you guys/gals use? I was originally leaning towards creating an HTML page since it seems a little more open and friendly than a word document. Plus I can use the prettify javascript to make code samples look nice. Our company has a Sharepoint though, so an HTML file may not be the best choice given that most documentation is put up in spreadsheets and word documents.

  • for TimeWithZone object, how to change the zone part only?

    - by leomayleomay
I have a table Coupon with a field expired_at, which is of datetime type, and before I save the record, I want to change the zone part of the field according to the user's choice. Say, c = Coupon.new c.expired_at = DateTime.now c.expired_at_timezone = "Arizona" c.save! and in the coupon.rb class Coupon << ActiveRecord::Base def before_save # change the zone part here, leave the date and time part alone end end What I'm saying is if the admin want the coupon expired at 2014-07-01 10:00 am, Arizona time, the expired_at stored in the db should be like this: Tue, 01 Jul 2014 10:00:00 MST -07:00 is there any way I can modify the zone part only and leave the date and time part alone? Thanks

  • Does the OS make a significant difference for Ruby Development ?

    - by Bragaadeesh
Hi, I have been working in Java for the past 4 years and I am currently switching over to Ruby. I am so excited about it and I feel good to finally get a hands on experience on a scripting language first time. The task assigned to me is to first pick a OS of my choice and setup a Ruby in it and study for 2 weeks. I have been developing applications in windows and Linux is not my cup of tea. Some part of me wants to try out Linux but I want to first convince myself whether OS really matters for Ruby development. If Linux does matter, which distribution can I start looking at? Please advise.

  • What language should I learn to make 2D turn-based video games?

    - by giggles
I want to make 2 dimensional turn-based games for the PC. Something like early Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger. Is C++ the only plausible option? I keep getting told that C++ is the language of choice for games, but is this the case even for 2D, turn-based games? Are any other languages good for this sort of thing? I'm really big on clean, readable, extendible code, so a language that fosters that sort of thing would be great. Doing this for fun, not business. Java is the only language I really know well right now. By the way, this is my first question and I'm a noob. I read the FAQ, but if I'm doing anything noobish anyway, then I'm sorry.

  • Oracle Apex License fees

    - by innot
Hi, Do you think that apex is a good choice for programs which are made to small size companies. For example I will develop a web application to a high school. They can not pay money to Oracle 10g or Oracle 11g license. So I must find cheap and rapid solutions. Can I use Oracle XE and Apex for corporate applications without paying any money? And I do not know whether I need to pay money foran application server?(like IIS,Apacahe, Tomcat...)

  • Automatic Step over

    - by Vaccano
I have been getting this error message when I step into some methods Do you want to continue being notified when an Automatic step over occurs? I usually answer Yes and I get taken to the line I want to step to. However, I just pressed No (cause I was tired of the dialog box always popping up). When I did that it skipped a lot of code I wanted to step through. Now when I step into my method it is skipping my method (and jumping to the finally block because the method I am trying to step into is throwing an exception). How can I change my answer back to Yes? I would prefer it never ask me (default showing the code), but if faced with the choice of it skipping the code I need to see, or having a NagBox, I will take the NagBox.

  • How do I target a new browser window en ASP.NET MVC?

    - by Richard77
Hello, This is what I want: Let's say I have a textbox and a button on a page. when I click the button, I get a page in a new browser window where I can make some choices. when I click OK on that new window, it disappears and my choice appears in the textbox located in the first window. How do I do that in ASP.NET MVC? I know that what I'm trying to do can be easily obtained through JavaScript. However, I'd like to apply the unobtrusive principle. So, I'll do first without JQuery in mind then, later, add JQuery. Thanks for helping

  • How do I erase printed characters in a console application(Linux)?

    - by Binny V A
Hi all, I am creating a small console app that needs a progress bar. Something like... Conversion: 175/348 Seconds |========== | 50% My question is, how do you erase characters already printed to the console? When I reach the 51st percentage, I have to erase this line from the console and insert a new line. In my current solution, this is what happens... Conversion: 175/348 Seconds |========== | 50% Conversion: 179/348 Seconds |========== | 52% Conversion: 183/348 Seconds |========== | 54% Conversion: 187/348 Seconds |=========== | 56% Code I use is... print "Conversion: $converted_seconds/$total_time Seconds $progress_bar $converted_percentage%\n"; I am doing this in Linux using PHP(only I will use the app - so please excuse the language choice). So, the solution should work on the Linux platform - but if you have a solution that's cross platform, that would be preferable.

  • How to add a web service reference in a DLL

    - by dan
I'm creating a DLL with a reference to web services (I don't have the choice to do so) but I have to add web service references to the project that uses the DLL for it to work. Example, I have the DLL called API.DLL that calls a web service called WebService.svc that I want to use in a project called WinForm. First, I have to add a "Service Reference" to WebService.svc in API.DLL. Then, I add a reference API.DLL to WinForm but it doesn't work unless I also add a service reference to WebService.svc in WinForm. What can I do to avoid that last step?

  • How to select random image of specific size using Django / Python?

    - by Jonathan
I've been using this little snippet to select random images. However I would like to change it to select only images of a certain size. I'm running into trouble checking against image size. If I use get_image_dimensions() I need to use a conditional statement, which then requires that I allow exceptions. So, I guess I need some pointers on just limiting by image dimensions. Thanks. import os import random import posixpath from django import template from django.conf import settings register = template.Library() def is_image_file(filename): """Does `filename` appear to be an image file?""" img_types = [".jpg", ".jpeg", ".png", ".gif"] ext = os.path.splitext(filename)[1] return ext in img_types @register.simple_tag def random_image(path): """ Select a random image file from the provided directory and return its href. `path` should be relative to MEDIA_ROOT. Usage: <img src='{% random_image "images/whatever/" %}'> """ fullpath = os.path.join(settings.MEDIA_ROOT, path) filenames = [f for f in os.listdir(fullpath) if is_image_file(f)] pick = random.choice(filenames) return posixpath.join(settings.MEDIA_URL, path, pick)

  • Grails background call vie camle or background-thread

    - by user304217
I need to improve the response time for a Grails application, so I need to use concurrent processing to separate work that can be done after the users web page is refreshed It seems like the Camel and background-thread plugins can do this for me. I tried the Camel way, but get 'Session does not exists' errors, which looks like hibernate can not operate in an Camel acynchonouse call. In the background-thread description they mention that they solved this problem. Can any one tell me which which will be the better choice and which ones plays nicely with Hibernate? All the best Ulrich

  • ctype_alpha but allow spaces(php)

    - by helloo
    I was wondering if one can allow spaces in a textfield when checking it with ctype_alpha. Since ctype_alpha only allows alphabetical letters, I don't know how to let the user enter space in the field. I did try using ctype_space but that didn't work. I simply want the user to be able to type only alphabets and they have a choice to include spaces if they "wish." I hope I will not have to use regexp as I am very new to all of this and hope to learn it at a later date. Below is some of the code...Thank you. elseif (!ctype_alpha($fname)) { echo "Your name may only contain alphabetical letters"; }

  • Help on choosing which SQL Server 2008 scale-out solution to pick (replication, ...)

    - by usr
I am currently crossing the jungle of SQL Server scale-out technologies like replication, log-shipping, mirroring... I have the following constraints on my choice: I want the read-only load to be spread accross the primary and the secondary (mirror, subscriber) server Write load can be sent directly to the primary server The solution should be nearly maintainance free. Schema changes should just replicate to the secondary server (attention: replication has some serious constraints here as it seems) Written data should be accessible very quickly (in under 1s, but better would be instantaneously) on the secondary server On server failure I can tollerate up to one hour of data loss easily. I am more concerned with easy scalability Here are some options for what I could pick: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb510414.aspx. Any experience you could share?

  • JUnit Theories: Why can't I use Lists (instead of arrays) as DataPoints?

    - by MatrixFrog
I've started using the new(ish) JUnit Theories feature for parameterizing tests. If your Theory is set up to take, for example, an Integer argument, the Theories test runner picks up any Integers marked with @DataPoint: @DataPoint public static Integer number = 0; as well as any Integers in arrays: @DataPoints public static Integer[] numbers = {1, 2, 3}; or even methods that return arrays like: @DataPoints public static Integer[] moreNumbers() { return new Integer[] {4, 5, 6};}; but not in Lists. The following does not work: @DataPoints public static List<Integer> numberList = Arrays.asList(7, 8, 9); Am I doing something wrong, or do Lists really not work? Was it a conscious design choice not to allow the use Lists as data points, or is that just a feature that hasn't been implemented yet? Are there plans to implement it in a future version of JUnit?
