• Labeling algorithm for points

  I need an algorithm to place horizontal text labels for multiple series of points on the screen (basically I need to show timestamps and other information for a history of moving objects on a map; in general there are multiple data points per object). The text labels should appear close to their points--above, below, or on the right side--but should not overlap other points or text labels. Does anyone know an algorithm/heuristic for this?

• How do you turn on the customizable gnome-panel features (like gnome-applets) in Precise?

  I resurrected a broken laptop today. I took out the HDD, put it in a USB 3.0 enclosure, and created a VM that would use it. It was running lucid. I took a screenshot of the desktop before I started "do-release-upgrade", because from experience, I will never have my GUI back the way I want it again. I know how to install gnome-panel to get back the "Gnome Classic" session option. I know how to put my minimize, maximize, and close buttons back in the upper-right hand corner of windows (where they belong). I know how to use gdm instead of lightdm. Unity gets worse in every version (and the other desktop OS is going to be even worse with Metro). Here's what I don't know (in order of importance): 1. How do you make the panels in gnome (gnome-panel, to be precise) customizable again (like they were in older versions of Ubuntu)? 2. How do you install applets in the panels now (right-click is now ignored)? 3. How can you customize all of the window elements (like you could in older versions of Ubuntu)? I can't remember much about maverick, natty, or oneiric (except their names), so I don't know exactly when I lost these capabilities. Edit: (no screenshot), my StackExchange reputation (on other StackExchange sites) doesn't carry over to this site, so I can't post the screenshot. Take a look at the panels in the screen hot. They are nice, compact, and VERY functional (disk mounter applet, frequently used shortcuts, workspaces, show desktop, kill window, and trash icons, etc.) Notice how small the fonts (and how little real estate they waste). You can't notice the compact title bars, fonts, and window icons in this screen shot (since I redacted the rest of the desktop), but it's the same story there. Please help. • Expected visual behavior of notifications (gnome metacity)

  I sometimes see notification popups on the right of the screen that specify things like network connectivity status changes mainly. I don't understand their expected visual behavior in that: It would appear that sometimes, when you move your mouse close to them, they disappear to reappear when you move away. It does not appear to be possible to ever click on them or hide them in any way, they generally just flicker, often in a in determinant way. Is the flickering perhaps caused because every flicker is in fact a unique notification?

  I have a problem with maverick when resuming from hibernate. Here's a screenshot: Also I'm getting the following errors before the screen appears: *ERROR* render ring head not reset to zero ctl 00... *ERROR* render ring head forced to zero ctl 00000... I tried upgrading to PPA kernel to 2.5.36 and 2.5.37 beta but the problem persists. I have a vaio notebook with an intel graphics card 4500mhd. Anyone knows of a fix?

Furthermore, the brightness setting doesn't exist anymore in "Energy" options. It is now on "Screen" options and it doesn't seem to remember the setting after reboot. So, how to make Unity remember brightness settings?

In your code you want to distinguish between the user sitting in front of the screen, and the user being edited. What do you call the two? User, CurrentUser, EditedUser, CurrentEditUser, etc? Note that the admin user isn't necessarily real admin, they can be just an ordinary user given rights to edit other users.

  I am running 12.04-64bit on a Dell xps15z and the resolution changes after each reboot to 1024x768 .As a result my desktop occupies just 3/4 of my entire screen...I have to manually adjust it through the display option to the max 1366x768 in order for the desktop to occupy the whole display!If you add this to the "system problem detected" that pops up every day I cannot hide my dissatisfaction and frustration about 12.04...

  i installed ubuntu alongside windows 8.1 over an usb drive on my lap top. At first i had problems with boot selection menu and i fixed it with EasyBCD now i have another problem i boot up my lap top and then it takes me to chose windows 8.1 or ubuntu i press ubuntu and it takes me to grub menu now i chose there ubuntu 12.04 and it starts to boot for few secs then my screen goes black and nothing happens few secs later i hear like short error noise and still nothin happens. Can someone help me solve this problem?

  I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed and I'm trying to make a dual boot with Ubuntu on my other hard drive but I can't make the Live USB work. I followed all the procedure for disabling the Security Boot and the UEFI setting but still doesn't work. It seems to start the installing procedure but I never get to choose anything: after a few seconds the screen turns black with an error message [18.707838] divide error: 0000 [#1] SMP (it goes on for several lines quoting some nouveau problem). Any ideas?

At work, I get very buggy behaviour, such as full screen applications 'ghosting' when maximized, and other strange effects. • When will the Unity Greeter begin to look like the propositions from the Design Team?

  The Canonical Design Team gave a rather beautiful login screen mockup for the unity greeter. These designs, in my opinion far exceed the current UI that we have for Quantal (which I think is worse, apart from remote login), and I was led to beleive that these were the official guidelines for the greeter. Are there plans to implement these designs into the Unity Greeter?   I've been playing around with the iOS 7 SpriteKit APIs and I totally love them. As I'm pretty much a n00b on Android, I'm wondering what the best Alternative would be if I wanted to go cross platform? I find Cocos2D learning curve pretty steep, where with SpriteKit it's a matter of minutes to get something on the screen. Then there's MonoGame and Cocos 2D for MonoGame - haven't tried either one I must admit.

  I followed the procedure mentioned at Installing Ubuntu on a Pre-Installed Windows 8 (64-bit) System (UEFI Supported) on toshiba satellite laptop. also tried the boot-repair and logs @ http://paste.ubuntu.com/6327398/ Its not booting to windows as well as ubuntu. It goes to grub command prompt. When on initial screen it briefly shows error message as failed to open /efi/Microsoft/boot/grubx64. Please advise. EDIT : Secure boot in on and boot mode is UEFI Boot

• Graphics on ubuntu 12.04 not working

  I've got a new build specs: i5 3570k gigabyte z77 d3h Using integrated graphics I've managed to install Ubuntu 12.04 with the alternate installer, and to get video with the nomodeset option on grub screen. However when I log in, I only get the 4:3 display option. I can't get it to change. Under the settings:details tab it recognizes the hd4000 integrated graphics. Hoping someone could help!
