    - by CodingThunder
    Looking in Process Explorer it uses; Virtual Size: 550,000k , Working Set: 28000k Why does my simple hello world console app use so much memory? I take it the difference between the Working Set and Virtual Size means that difference will be paged to disk? /I am running 64 bit XP. Thanks class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("Hello world"); Console.ReadLine(); } }

  • Why Swift is 100 times slower than C in this image processing test?

    - by xiaobai
    Like many other developers I have been very excited at the new Swift language from Apple. Apple has boasted its speed is faster than Objective C and can be used to write operating system. And from what I learned so far, it's a very type-safe language and able to have precisely control over the exact data type (like integer length). So it does look like having good potential handling performance critical tasks, like image processing, right? That's what I thought before I carried out a quick test. The result really surprised me. Here is a much simplified image alpha blending code snippet in C: test.c: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdint.h> #include <string.h> uint8_t pixels[640*480]; uint8_t alpha[640*480]; uint8_t blended[640*480]; void blend(uint8_t* px, uint8_t* al, uint8_t* result, int size) { for(int i=0; i<size; i++) { result[i] = (uint8_t)(((uint16_t)px[i]) *al[i] /255); } } int main(void) { memset(pixels, 128, 640*480); memset(alpha, 128, 640*480); memset(blended, 255, 640*480); // Test 10 frames for(int i=0; i<10; i++) { blend(pixels, alpha, blended, 640*480); } return 0; } I compiled it on my Macbook Air 2011 with the following command: gcc -O3 test.c -o test The 10 frame processing time is about 0.01s. In other words, it takes the C code 1ms to process one frame: $ time ./test real 0m0.010s user 0m0.006s sys 0m0.003s Then I have a Swift version of the same code: test.swift: let pixels = UInt8[](count: 640*480, repeatedValue: 128) let alpha = UInt8[](count: 640*480, repeatedValue: 128) let blended = UInt8[](count: 640*480, repeatedValue: 255) func blend(px: UInt8[], al: UInt8[], result: UInt8[], size: Int) { for(var i=0; i<size; i++) { var b = (UInt16)(px[i]) * (UInt16)(al[i]) result[i] = (UInt8)(b/255) } } for i in 0..10 { blend(pixels, alpha, blended, 640*480) } The build command line is: xcrun swift -O3 test.swift -o test Here I use the same O3 level optimization flag to make the comparison hopefully fair. However, the resulting speed is 100 time slower: $ time ./test real 0m1.172s user 0m1.146s sys 0m0.006s In other words, it takes Swift ~120ms to processing one frame which takes C just 1 ms. I also verified the memory initialization time in both test code are very small compared to the blend processing function time. What happened?

  • LaTeX - Changing the font sizxe for a document, but in the preamble, not the document class?

    - by Rory
    I have a LaTeX document. I want to change the font size of all the text, to make it smaller. Normally I would just change the documentclass part. However I am generating LaTeX files from another programme, and it is setting the documentclass, I can't change that. However I can put things in the preamble. Is there anyway to change the font size in the preamble, without touching the documentclass declaration.

  • highlight search keywords on hover

    - by fusion
    i've a basic php search form which highlights the keywords using css. i was wondering if i could make the keywords in the results highlight only when the user hovers over the record. is this possible? this is the highlight code: function highlightWords($text, $words) { preg_match_all('~\w+~', $words, $m); if(!$m) return $text; $re = '~\\b(' . implode('|', $m[0]) . ')~i'; $string = preg_replace($re, '<span class="highlight">$0</span>', $text); return $string; } . . . <table class="result"> <?php while ($row= mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { $cQuote = highlightWords(htmlspecialchars($row['cQuotes']), $search_result); ?> <tr> <td style="text-align:right; font-size:15px;"><?php h($row['cArabic']); ?></td> <td style="font-size:16px;"><?php echo $cQuote; ?></td> <td style="font-size:12px;"><?php h($row['vAuthor']); ?></td> <td style="font-size:12px; font-style:italic; text-align:right;"><?php h($row['vReference']); ?></td> </tr> <?php } ?> </table> css: table.result tr:hover { background:#F7F7F7; } .highlight { font-weight:bold; color: #DE2842; padding:5px; padding-right:2px; background: #FFFCDB; } i tried changing the color through highlight:hover, but this changed the color of the search keyword only when i hovered over the keyword itself, which is understandable since that's the way it is supposed to work, but i'd like the search keywords to be highlighted when i hover over the result as a whole.

  • How to calculate where bullet hits

    - by lkjoel
    I have been trying to write an FPS in C/X11/OpenGL, but the issue that I have encountered is with calculating where the bullet hits. I have used a horrible technique, and it only sometimes works: pos size, p; size.x = 0.1; size.z = 0.1; // Since the game is technically top-down (but in a 3D perspective) // Positions are in X/Z, no Y float f; // Counter float d = FIRE_MAX + 1 /* Shortest Distance */, d1 /* Distance being calculated */; x = 0; // Index of object to hit for (f = 0.0; f < FIRE_MAX; f += .01) { // Go forwards p.x = player->pos.x + f * sin(toRadians(player->rot.x)); p.z = player->pos.z - f * cos(toRadians(player->rot.x)); // Get all objects that collide with the current position of the bullet short* objs = _colDetectGetObjects(p, size, objects); for (i = 0; i < MAX_OBJECTS; i++) { if (objs[i] == -1) { continue; } // Check the distance between the object and the player d1 = sqrt( pow((objects[i].pos.x - player->pos.x), 2) + pow((objects[i].pos.z - player->pos.z), 2)); // If it's closer, set it as the object to hit if (d1 < d) { x = i; d = d1; } } // If there was an object, hit it if (x > 0) { hit(&objects[x], FIRE_DAMAGE, explosions, currtime); break; } } It just works by making a for-loop and calculating any objects that might collide with where the bullet currently is. This, of course, is very slow, and sometimes doesn't even work. What would be the preferred way to calculate where the bullet hits? I have thought of making a line and seeing if any objects collide with that line, but I have no idea how to do that kind of collision detection. EDIT: I guess my question is this: How do I calculate the nearest object colliding in a line (that might not be a straight 45/90 degree angle)? Or are there any simpler methods of calculating where the bullet hits? The bullet is sort of like a laser, in the sense that gravity does not affect it (writing an old-school game, so I don't want it to be too realistic)

  • Vector Troubles in C++

    - by DistortedLojik
    I am currently working on a project that deals with a vector of objects of a People class. The program compiles and runs just fine, but when I use the debugger it dies when trying to do anything with the PersonWrangler object. I currently have 3 different classes, one for the person, a personwrangler which handles all of the people collectively, and a game class that handles the game input and output. Edit: My basic question is to understand why it is dying when it calls outputPeople. Also I would like to understand why my program works exactly as it should unless I use the debugger. The outputPeople function works the way I intended that way. Edit 2: The callstack has 3 bad calls which are: std::vector ::begin(this=0xbaadf00d) std::vector ::size(this=0xbaadf00d) PersonWrangler::outputPeople(this=0xbaadf00d) Relevant code: class Game { public: Game(); void gameLoop(); void menu(); void setStatus(bool inputStatus); bool getStatus(); PersonWrangler* hal; private: bool status; }; which calls outputPeople where it promptly dies from a baadf00d error. void Game::menu() { hal->outputPeople(); } where hal is an object of PersonWrangler type class PersonWrangler { public: PersonWrangler(int inputStartingNum); void outputPeople(); vector<Person*> peopleVector; vector<Person*>::iterator personIterator; int totalPeople; }; and the outputPeople function is defined as void PersonWrangler::outputPeople() { int totalConnections = 0; cout << " Total People:" << peopleVector.size() << endl; for (unsigned int i = 0;i < peopleVector.size();i++) { sort(peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.begin(),peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.end()); peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.erase( unique (peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.begin(),peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.end()),peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.end()); peopleVector[i]->outputPerson(); totalConnections+=peopleVector[i]->connectionsVector.size(); } cout << "Total connections:" << totalConnections/2 << endl; }

  • Super fast getimagesize in php

    - by Sir Lojik
    Hi all, im trying to get image size(DIMENSIONS) of hundreds of remote images and getimagesize is way too slow. ive done some reading and found out the quickest way would be to use get_file_contents to read a certain aount of bytes from the images and examining the size within the binary data. Anyone attempted this before? How would i examine different formats. Seen any library for this? please let me know
