I want to change the default directory so that someone can't just go to my server.com/cpanel or server.com/whm and start trying to access my system.
Any tips? Webserver is Apache2
Currently I have zsh set up in such a way that command history is shared between all sessions immediately.
Say I have a terminal emulator open with two tabs, each with a zsh session, A1 and A2. If I enter ls -la in A1, and then go to A2 and press up arrow key, I will see ls -la in the command prompt.
I would like to change it so sessions don't share the command history with each other although when you start new session it gets all the previous history from all sessions before it.

I'm looking to present an Excel questionnaire I have written to the board, via either paper or presentation slides. It uses a lot of drop-down boxes, and so I'm looking for any ideas on how one might go about showing the options for each response (from the drop-down boxes), without having to manually print screen a bunch of times and pasting the results into Visio.
Has anyone come across a nie easy, fast method of doing this?

How can I record everything I browse so that, ideally, it might later enable me to re-surf the same pages without internet access ?
For instance, if I go to http://www.example.com/example.html I would like to be able to view the same page later exactly as initially (but without reconnecting to www.example.com). Thank you in advance.
Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit

Since upgrading from Vista to Win 7 File Hippo Update Checker no longer works? It appears to go through the motions of checking the software because the popup window appears but it never fires up the results in a browser which it used to do in Vista.
It simply does nothing after the initial popup window appears and disappears.
Have tried uninstall/reinstall with no joy.
Any ideas?
I am using gnome-terminal with bash.
When I set xterm-256color for $TERM and in .tmux.conf most of the things work but when I try to change the colorscheme of vim the things mess up.
When I set screen-256color for $TERM and in .tmux.conf the colors work ok but most of the keys go mad. I've tried some of the suggestions from the last link but when I ssh the arrows crash even on the command line..
So how to configure tmux?
I've been trying to setup email forwarding through fetchmail from remote smtp server to Gmail account, although messages are constantly coming to my local address and accessible via "mail" command. SMTP connection works perfectly, but emails do not go anywhere.
System: debian, fetchmail
Config: poll smtp.server protocol imap username “user” password “pass” smtpname “[email protected]” ssl
Thank you!
A friend just bought a netbook (HP mini 110) with Windows XP but it was the one used for testing in the store (the last one on storage) so it's somewhat filled with stuff from people testing the machine.
How should I go about restoring the system to a ?
As a first step I'm going to create a new User account and delete the old one (from the store).
How do we change the name It's registered to?
What other things should I take in account?
In my web app, I'm toying with the idea of giving my user the opportunity to select a subdomain of their choosing, so they could select something like:
foobar.myapp.com
where foobar is their chosen subdomain. What is the proper way to go about setting up something like this? .htaccess? Have some api for writing virtual hosts? The application would still always map to one directory on my sever, I just want to give theme a custom URL.
I use Transmission on Mac for handling my torrents. I just reformatted and reinstalled Transmission. How do I go about letting Transmission know that the .torrent files I have, are already downloaded and to start seeding without starting downloading again?
I have an SD card with a corrupt filesystem, so wanted to clone it and attempt recovery on the copy (just in case of problems). I was thinking that dd-ing it Linux would be a sensible way to go, but don't really want to experiment in this situation. So if anyone has done this before then it would be good to know the exact approach that works.
In case it helps, I have Ubuntu, OSX and Windows machines available.
TIA,
Paul.
good day

I have a file system where one or more symlinks exist to a file. Is there a way to go thru each file and determine where all the symlinks that point to it on the file system are?
I want to remove my windows 7 genuine licence from one computer and install windows 7 on another computer using the same licence key. I know the licence is somehow locked to the hardware of the original computer - but is there a way to uninstall the windows licence, so it can be re-used, and locked to new hardware?
(The original PC will go back to XP)
The title says it all. Is there a way to make the loginwindow process start a user session by running a command when remotely logged in via SSH as an admin on Mac OS X?
When the machine is at the login window (no user is currently logged in), I want it to open up a user's session as if I had clicked on the username and entered a password.
Solutions that don't involve scripting the GUI are highly preferred, but this Apple KB page may be of interest for those who go that route.
I want to restrict all traffic from my ubuntu-machine to come or go from the local network (eth0) or from or to my VPN (tun0).
It should be possible to connect the router in the local network but not possible to leave the local network not using the VPN.
Since i have no experience with iptables and i couldn't find some how-to i tried ufw but i did not succeed.
Thank you for some hints or code snippets how to come closer!
I have a script that I want to have an if statement check if a file falls between several specified date periods as it searches directories. I have been able to get the time in %Y-%m-%d format for the file, but I can't seem to be able to specify a date range for python to go through. Any ideas/help?
Here's what I have so far
for name in files:
f = os.path.join(root, name)
dt = os.path.getmtime(f)
nwdt = time.gmtime(dt)
ndt = time.strftime('%Y-%m-%d', nwdt)
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and the kernel 2.6 build-in NETEM tool to delay traffic.
After I apply:
tc qdisc add dev eth0 root netem delay 100ms
The upload bandwidth can't go further than 330KB/s and I have a 100Mbit connection.
How can I fix this so that my upload bandwidth is still full.
Thanks!
I have a Samba share setup on my Windows 7 machine which allows me to access a CentOS 5.6 VM running on my machine with VirtualBox.
When I restart my Windows machine I have to start the VM, as you would expect. However, when I go to connect to my Samba share in Windows it asks me for the password every time - even if I tick 'Remember My Password'.
Is there any way to store the password for the VM so that it doesn't ask me every time?
I have my msn email account setup with a bunch of folders to put all my different emails in. I don't use rules, just drag and drop sort. On my current computer, I have it go to outlook, and all the folders pop up fine. But I set that up 4 years ago, and now I'm setting up a new laptop and have no idea how to get it going again. Any ideas?
I am on windows xp sp3 and I am trying to convert a file from ASCII to UTF-8.
I use notepad++ to do this. I go to Encoding Convert to UTF-8 without BOM.
I save the file, reopen and it is still on ASCII.
I am using this file in a webpage and I need the file to be UTF-8, because I have strings in utf-8 and they am seeing little squares with ? on them.
My question is very basic in nature. Is the mount point for external media (like USB) always /media?
Because in a Debian system, if I plug in any USB device that goes to the /media folder. So is it the case with all the other Linux flavors like Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. If a USB device is automatically mounted will it always go to the /media directory?
