• Annoying behavior from BitTorrent

  I'm trying to download a file via bittorent and experiencing a very annoying issue. Everytime I start downloading, the download rate varies between 40-50KB and stays at that for roughly a minute, before it starts to go down until it eventually gets as low as 2-3KB. If I exit and restart Bittorent it starts from 40-50KB again. What on earth is the reason for this? It seems like a pattern rather than the random fluctuation of seeds/peers leaving.

  I turn off all of my computers at night except for my server. I'd like to be able to have my torrent downloads run on my server, which won't be logged in, so I'm wondering if there are any clients that can run as a service. I'm ideally looking for one that can be passed a path to a .torrent file and will begin downloading it (I'll write the program that will interact with it).

  While downloading a tar ball from gnu's FTP server, I found that other than standard 21 TCP port connection, I also seeing an extra connection: tcp 0 0 192.168.1.109:45056 208.118.235.20:21 ESTABLISHED 10956/wget tcp 0 0 192.168.1.109:56724 208.118.235.20:22259 ESTABLISHED 10956/wget What that port is used for? I checked /etc/services, only 20 and 21 should be in use, am I wrong? The command in use was wget 'ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.26.tar.xz'

  I have enabled the setting in squid (in pfsesnse) where any file which is greater than 50MB should not be downloaded. I tried downloading in IE and it comes with error that security setting does not allow you to download that file. But when i tried same in FF it allows me to download any file size. Why does Firefox bypass the proxy server?

• Vista 32-Bit Home Premium will not let me install any updates.

  Windows update says that it could not search for new updates and gives the error code 80070643. From what I have read it has something to do with Office 2003 and I dont even have it installed. I tried downloading and installing vista sp2 but it fails as well giving me error: ERROR_EVT_CONFIGURATION_ERROR(0x89973aa2). Can someone please help me resolve this issue?

• Circumvent proxy filter that disables the download of EXE files

  Do you know of a way to download exe files although the web proxy has a filter in place not to allow this? I have searched for a feature web site that does automatic file renaming. That should certainly make it possible. The solution would take a URL and then change the extension so that it would look to my proxy as I was downloading a .dat file (or similar). There are perhaps other solutions to this problem.

  I'm currently using conventional HDDs like the 5200 rpms, browsing a lot, my folder and files are scattered, torrenting always and I'm not fond of optimization like disabling cache, cleaning temp Files , etc. My question is, given the above conditions (no disable of cache, seeding always in torrent, downloading torrent) is it safe to use SSD? I'm pretty worried about cycles but I read an article wherein it says its safe since it will usually wear out for 10 years given that you always write heavily and continuously. Thanks

  I've been told by my ISP I'm using too much bandwidth so after using Activity Monitor to see that I'm using ~2GB a day I've used the nettop command line utility to work out where.   I'm quite annoyed with my firefox and Flash files : When I try opening a .swf file with it: If the file is on the web (via http://...), it plays normally in browser If the file is local (via file:///...), firefox only show me a dialog to download it It tried opening a web swf file, downloading it then opening it locally, it's the same.   While I'm downloading a large file on Windows 7 using Google Chrome, my computer goes to sleep. I could obviously set the computer to not sleep at all (or change the interval before the computer sleeps). What I want to know is: Is there a way to make Windows 7 not sleep as long as a download is in progress? (perhaps when any network activity is going on?). I've looked in the Advanced Power settings, and haven't seen any obvious setting.
