Hi,
I'm writing an application in wpf that uses MVVM. I wondered if I could use ado.net entity data model as a model in MVVM? Is it the same? If not, why?
Thanks for any help.
Regards,
Ev.
I'm implementing serial key functionality in my application. User needs to enter at least 64bit number in order to register the application. Because typing number like 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 will take a while I want to compress it a bit. The first guess was to code this number hexadecimally but it still is quite long (0x7FFF FFFF FFFF FFFF).
Is there any standard method in .NET to code this number alphanumerically using for example: digits, upper-case and lower-case characters?
I'm trying to deploy a segment of our site to a new server, and I'm getting the following error when I try to pull up any ASP.Net page...
"401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied."
What permissions should I be checking?
thanks
In an ASP.net MVC 2 app that I have I want to return a 204 No Content response to a post operation. Current my controller method has a void return type, but this sends back a response to the client as 200 OK with a Content-Length header set to 0. How can I make the response into a 204?
[HttpPost]
public void DoSomething(string param)
{
// do some operation with param
// now I wish to return a 204 no content response to the user
// instead of the 200 OK response
}
For some reason it takes 7 seconds to open a connection to a sql server database for the firt time, subsequent connections takes a second. any idea what could be the reason?
I'm using C# and asp.net
Its after compilation, i essence every time i restart the site, which means every time it needs to actualy create the "first" connection. i understand that setting up connection pooling has overhead, but i have never seen that i should take 7 second to set it up.
I've been told that using GDI+ from ASP.NET is dangerous and undefined.
Is that because there is no guarantee of a Device Context? Can someone explain?
What are some of the alternatives?

I am writing web application using ASP.NET MVC + NHibernate + Postres stack. I wonder if images uploaded should be stored in database as binary blobs or on filesystem (and reference only in db).
One advantage of db storage I can think of is easy backup/recovery of all data without reverting to filesystem copy tools. On the other hand I suspect that filesystem access may be faster (but is it especially when dealing with many concurrent requests?)
What are your suggestions?
The site im working on is an Ajax enabled ASP.net/C# project and i have a URL like this:
http://localhost:2531/(S(lfcvqc55wkabpp55o1x4pvq5))/Logon.aspx
How do you get rid of the (S(lfcvqc55wkabpp55o1x4pvq5)) portion of the URL? I have a feeling its a web.config parameter however I'm not really sure what you call this part, GUID, Session ID?
I need to print the contents of a datagridview, simple text in rows and columns, with GDI+ in .NET to paper.
To do this, I need to iterate over the rows, draw lines, iterate over the columns, calculate width, height, wrap the contents if contents do not fit on one line, etc. This is all possible, but is there a library that simplifies the drawing of tables in GDI+ and abstracts some of the difficulties away?
This should be a simple question but I haven't managed to find the answer on google.
I would like to know, in terms an idiot can understand, exactly what application lifetime means in ASP.NET (and therefore when you can expect application start and end events to run).
I assumed it would be when you run and stop the app in IIS, but I've read things that suggest it's related to number of requests.

I have converted a PowerBuilder application to 11.5 .NET. When it builds, it compiles into a DLL, an EXE and a bunch of “netmodule” files. Are the netmodules necessary for deployment, or just part of some intermediate step? Is there any way to get the compiler to build me one DLL for each pbl (PowerBuilder library)?
I have an ASP.NET WebForms public business site. I want to integrate a discussion forum into my site. However, I don't want people to have to log in twice.
Can someone recommend a ready made discussion forum solution that I can drop into my site, yet be able to customize with my login infrastructure?
I have a asp.net page that have 2 modalpopupextender.

Any ideas?????
Is there a way to tell the .NET to allocate a new object in generation 2 heap. I have a problem where I need to allocate approximately 200 MB of objects, do something with them, and throw them away. What happens here is that all the data gets copied two times (from gen0 to gen1 and then from gen1 to gen2).
I'm working on an older ASP.NET project (not MVC I don't think) and one of the features they require is to view a description of an item when they hover over that item in a dropdown list. This can be simply done with HTML using the following code and making use of title text:
<select>
<option value="1" title="Option 1 Desc">Option 1</option>
<option value="2" title="Option 2 Desc">Option 2</option>
<option value="3" title="Option 3 Desc">Option 3</option>
</select>
Ok so how do I do this using ASP.NET DropDownList control? I have the following code:
<asp:DropDownList ID="DropDownListLocation" runat="server" AutoPostBack="true" OnSelectedIndexChanged="DropDownListLocation_OnSelectedIndexChanged" CssClass="editorFieldServerControl" ClientIDMode="Static"></asp:DropDownList>
And in the 'code behind' page:
private void PopulateFacilityDropdown(List<FacilityAvailableByLocation> facilities, int? selectedID)
{
DropDownListFacility.DataSource = facilities;
DropDownListFacility.DataTextField = "FacilityName";
DropDownListFacility.DataValueField = "FacilityID";
DropDownListFacility.DataBind();
DropDownListFacility.Items.Insert(0, new System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListItem("", ""));
if (selectedID.HasValue && selectedID.Value > 0)
DropDownListFacility.SelectedIndex = facilities.FindIndex(b => b.FacilityID == selectedID.Value);
else DropDownListFacility.SelectedIndex = 0;
}
}
Basically each facility in the list of facilities there has properties for an ID, Name, Description that I can get out. I just want to be able to put a title attribute on each <option> that gets rendered and put the description into it. Either that or be able to add a custom attribute like 'data-description' to each <option> tag then I can add the title into each option tag myself using a bit of jQuery which is easy enough.
I miss the days where you could just loop through a list and output the custom dropdown code manually.
Any ideas? Many thanks
