    My computer will often just die randomly while I am using it. The screen goes black and sometimes displays the words TERM signal killed along with other things and sometimes it displays nothing. The writing stays on the screen momentarily before it disappears to just black. I then have to hold in the power button to turn it off and then re boot. Here are the specs... help!   • How do I skip the Grub menu on a dual-boot system?

    I have Ubuntu and Windows 7 installed and dual booting via Grub2. 99/100 times I will boot into Ubuntu. I want to speed up my time for booting into Ubuntu and really the Grub2 prompt is the part that adds the most time. So, I want to disable the prompt. I would prefer to be able to set it up so I can hold shift or similar at boot if I wish to show it. But I don't mind editing a config file or similar in Ubuntu to show it again if need be. So how can I do this?

  • Is it possible to start an additional X server after the system boots in 12.04?

    I'd like to have 2 VT's running, one on VT7 with the standard lightdm + unity interface and another on VT8 running a custom script which will launch a virtual machine in full screen. At the moment I've tried writing an init.d script with no luck and I can't find any details on a configuration file which will allow me to start 2 servers. I suppose my ideal answer would be one which points me to a config file I can edit to start up an additional server. Edit - I forgot to mention in the text that I already know how to start another X session: I'd like this to start automatically at boot.

The FC figures out what page you want, loads the specific page Controller (*EDIT* which extends an abstract Controller Object */EDIT*), which gets anything it needs from Models, and then calls the appropriate View. Very basic. But now, I need to make an admin section (quasi-CMS). How does a login system fit into the grand scheme of things? Do you set controllers as needing a login? If so, how?     I have a desktop application (forms) with a tab control, I assign a tab and a new custom webrowser control. I open up about 10 of these tabs. Each one visits about 100 - 500 different pages. The trouble is that if 1 webbrowser control has a problem it shuts down the entire program. I want to be able to close the offending webbrowser control and open a new one in it's place. Is there any event that I need to subscribe to catch a crashing or unresponsive webbrowser control ? It was not possible due to a changed dynamic loader location (https://wiki.linaro.org/OfficeofCTO/HardFloat/LinkerPathCallApr2012) I succeeded by creating the following symbolic link /lib/ld-linux.so.3 - /lib/ld-linuxarmhf.so.3 Is there a way to install a portability package instead? Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (E:) I know it says Ubuntu but when I installed Ubuntu I think I put 14 gigabytes for it so I think its the recovery one but I'm not sure.     I'm trying to figure out how to redirect one URL to one location: http://mydomain.com/admin to http://mydomain.com/admin And have all other requests from http://mydomain.com point to http://myotherdomain.com So essentially all other requests will redirect to myotherdomain.com except for http://mydomain.com/admin I've tried setting up a Redirect rule in Apache but I'm not having any luck.   • Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04. The system is running in low-graphics

    I am a newbie to Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 using a USB Stick and it was running all fine for a few weeks and this error popped up. According to one of my friend, the best way was to re-install Ubuntu. Being from a non unix background i thought the same too and after the second install it happened again, but only this time was much quicker, in 3 days. I don't want to re-install Ubuntu every time this happens. I am a complete newbie to Linux which means that i am really bad at using terminal. I know there are other people who fixed this issue using this very same forum, but unfortunately the answers provided are too complex for me to understand. Please let me know how to do this. Things I want to let you know: I would need help step by step if that is alright with you. After i get the error i get the options and i click exit to console login I get the following message in a black screen (which i think is a command line sort of thing): * Stopping save kernel messages [OK] apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name,using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName [OK] * Starting web server apache2 and a blinking cursor. So basically it looks like a dead end for my non unixy eye. And one final thing is before this issue had happened i had tried configuring Python to Apache2. For that i had uninstalled and installed LAMP server several time and edited the configuration files too. I don't know if this really is a concern, but I don't know.. I have a USB with Ubuntu 12.04 in it so i can install it anytime. (But i want to know what the issue is rather than running away) . I migrated to Ubuntu from Windows and i have no plans to go back.     I'm building a question and answer application on top of twitter and I'm hitting some snags because I'm inevitably dealing with two classes of users: authenticated and non-authenticated. The site enable users to give points to other users, who may or may not be authenticated, and I want to create a site-wide point system where the application stores and displays this information on their profile. I want to save this point data to the user because that would be faster and more efficient but non-authenticated users aren't in our system, we only have the twitter handle. So instead we display the points in our system like this: @points = point.all( :select => "tag, count(*) AS count", # Return tag and count :group => 'tag', # Group by the tag :order => "2 desc", :conditions => {:twitter_handle => params[:username]}) Is there a better way to do this? Is there a better way to associate data with non-authenticated users?

  • 5 year old ubuntu system, always dist-upgraded => ok. however some tasks remain

    I have a PC with a current ubuntu distribution installed. I've upgraded many times since 5.10. It always went well, however some tools or features were kindof left behind in a unsatisfactory state: grub to grub2 - is it an really necessary to switch the boot loader some time to grub2. Upgrading this scares me abit. I still have ext3 devices - is it worth upgrading to ext4? should I wait for btrfs? hibernation and suspend- it only worked in 5.10, since 6.04 it was messed up. Should I really care? Any chance to repair this myself? Simply by cleanup or hacking config files. It is a desktop PC after all. So energy saving functionality is not really needed. I am using vmware workstation 6.5 and the latest kernel that supports it is 2.6.32. This is my default kernel now, ignoring 2.6.35. Am I missing anything important in the new kernel now?

On rebooting all was fine and the boot menu had Ubuntu 12.04, mem, windows, and finally Mint 12. All was fine till now. Today wanted to boot into windows BUT found win XP missing from Boot Menu. Tried sudo grub-install /dev/sda followed by sudo update-grub BUT win XP is NOT FOUND. Can someone help with what to do to restore WIN XP in Boot Menu, Please?

  • Is there a "dual user check-in" source control system?

    Are there any source control systems that require another user to validate the source code "before" it can be checked-in? I want to know as this is one technique to make sure that code quality is high. Update: There has been talk of "Branches" in the answers, and while I feel branches have there place I think that branchs are something different as when a developer's code is ready to go into the main branch it "should" be checked. Most often though I see that when this happens a lead developer or whoever is responsible for the merge into the main branch/stream just puts the code into the main branch as long as it "compiles" and does no more checks than that. I want the idea of two people putting their names to the code at an early stage so that it introduces some responsibility, and also because the code is cheaper to fix early on and is also fresh in the developers mind.

    I've just got a laptop with Intel GMA X4500HD card (which is said to be DirectX10-compliant, while my previous laptop had Intel 82852/855GM and no chance to play modern 3D games at all). It would be nice if I could play some games (like HalfLife 2, StarCraft 2, Fallout 3) from time to time (while I am ok using lo-fi settings and having low performance) but as I strongly prefer Ubuntu environment and don't need Windows usually I'd like to install Windows inside VirtualBox instead of using a dedicated partition and dual-boot. So the question is if VirtualBox can use 3D acceleration of Intel GMA X4500HD if run on Ubuntu.

    I'm still wrapping my head around REST, but I wonder if someone can help with any suggestions or approaches to role based access control for a RESTful service, particularly from the point of view of securing the data and how the URLs might look. It's probably best to consider an example: Say I have a REST service for Customers, and want to split the users of this REST service into Admin, Editor and Reader roles: Admins can change all attributes of a Customer resource Editors can change only some Readers can only view them. Access control rights are assigned to the Customers entities individually. So for example a user of the service might have admin rights to Customers 1,2 and 3 but Editor access to 4,5 and Reader access to 7,8,9. Now consider the user calling the service. What is a good way to seperate the list of Customers for the current User? GET /Customer - this might get a list of all customers that the current user has Admin\Editor\Reader access to. But then on each Customer the consumer would need an indication of what role they have. Or would it be "better" having something like GET /Customer/Admin - return all customers the current user has Admin access to. Just looking for some high level pointers or reading on a decent way to secure\filter the resources based on roles of the current user.

  • Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04--keyboard & mouse no longer work--system down!

    I upgraded from Ubuntu 11 to 12.04, today, and everything seemed to go smoothly up to, and including the reboot. However, I now find that my mouse and keyboard no longer function, so I cannot login or otherwise use my computer. I have read other posts on this topic, but most of the answers seem to require the use of a keyboard to implement the solution--and I can't use my keyboard! I downloaded a 12.04 LiveCD and tried booting from it, but I have the same issue with that--no keyboard! My systems is a Lenovo with an AMD64 dual processor, and my keyboard and mouse are USB attached and shared with two other Windows PCs via a KVM switch (so I no the keyboard and mouse work!). I would appreciate some hints about how to make this PC usable, again. Thanks!

    What is the minimum rights required to access the Users directory on another computer via an admin share? I have a batch file that writes some information to a few other computers using a path of \\%COMPUTERNAME%\c$\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming. The batch files run under an unprivileged user (part of Domain Users only). How do I set appropriate rights so that service account can access the AppData\Roaming folder for every user on another computer? I'd like to give rights lower than Local Admin, which I know will work. Things I've attempted: As Domain Admin, attempted to give Modify rights to the C:\Users\ directory on the local computer. Error: Access Denied. Set the service account as Local Admin on the other computer. This works, but is against IT policy where I work. I'd like to accomplish this with rights lower than Local Admin. Any suggestions?
