  • Can a math intensive application cause a crash?

    - by philcolbourn
I have been messing with hash functions and functions to generate primes etc. I had 3 lock-ups in a short period. This was odd since my macbook rarely locks-up and usually only when I run out of memory - which does not happen often. But in this case, I had three in a row and none since (but I also am not generating as much load as before).

  • App Engine Datastore access

    - by Pablo Alvim
Is it possible to query App Engine's Datastore from outside the cloud, i.e. a client application? I could possibly write an app to be housed within AppStore and query the Datastore returning XML-formatted data; I want to know, however, if there are any Datastore endpoints which would allow me to do it directly. Also, in case it is possible, am I able to do so via SSL?

  • How could I apply a genetic algorithm to a simple game that follows rollercoaster tracks?

    - by Chris
I have free-rein over what I do on a final assignment for school, with respect to modifying a simple direct-x game that currently just has the camera follow some rollercoaster rails. I've developed an interest in genetic algorithms and would like to take this opportunity to apply one and learn something about them. However, I can't think of any way I could possibly apply one in this case. What are some options available to me?

  • Remove a layer from a ggplot2 chart

    - by Erik Shilts
    I'd like to remove a layer (in this case the results of geom_ribbon) from a ggplot2 created grid object. Is there a way I can remove it once it's already part of the object? library(ggplot2) dat <- data.frame(x=1:3, y=1:3, ymin=0:2, ymax=2:4) p <- ggplot(dat, aes(x=x, y=y)) + geom_ribbon(aes(ymin=ymin, ymax=ymax), alpha=0.3) + geom_line() # This has the geom_ribbon p # This overlays another ribbon on top p + geom_ribbon(aes(ymin=ymin, ymax=ymax, fill=NA))

  • Subroutine to apply Daylight Bias to display time in local DST?

    - by vfclists
UK is currently 1 hour ahead of UTC due to Daylight Savings Time. When I check the Daylight Bias value from GetTimeZoneInformation it is currently -60. Does that mean that translating UTC to DST means DST = UTC + -1 * DaylightBias, ie negate and add? I thought in this case for instance adding Daylight Bias to UTC is the correct operation, hence requiring DaylightBias to be 60 rather than -60.

  • Doing some stuff right before the user exits the page

    - by Mike
I have seen some questions here regarding what I want to achieve and have based what I have so far on those answer. But there is a slight misbehavior that is still irritating me. What I have is sort of a recovery feature. Whenever you are typing text, the client sends a sync request to the server every 45 seconds. It does 2 things. First, it extends the lease the client has on the record (only one person may edit at one time) for another 60 seconds. Second, it sends the text typed so far to the server in case the server crashes, internet connection fails, etc. In that case, the next time the user enters our application, the user is notified that something has gone wrong and that some text was recovered. Think of Microsoft or OpenOffice recovery whenever they crash! Of course, if the user leaves the page willingly, the user does not need to be notified and as a result, the recovery is deleted. I do that final request via a beforeunload event. Everything went fine until I was asked to make a final adjustment... The same behavior you have here at stack overflow when you exit the editor... a confirm dialogue. This works so far, BUT, the confirm dialogue is shown twice. Here is the code. The event if (local.sync.autosave_textelement) { window.onbeforeunload = exitConfirm; } The function function exitConfirm() { var local = Core; if (confirm('blub?')) { local.sync.autosave_destroy = true; sync(false); return true; } else { return false; } }; Some problem irrelevant clarifications: Core is a global Object that contains a lot of variables that are used everywhere. sync makes an ajax request. The values are based on the values that the Core.sync object contains. The parameter determines if the call should be async (default) or sync. Edit 1 I did try to separate both things (recovery deletion and user confirmation that is) into beforeunload and unload. The problem there was that unload is a bit too late. The user gets informed that there is a recovery even though it is scheduled to be deleted. If you refresh the page 1 second later, the dialogue disappears as the file was deleted by then.

  • Asynchronous Delegates Vs Thread/ThreadPool?

    - by claws
Hello, I need to execute 3 parallel tasks and after completion of each task they should call the same function which prints out the results. I don't understand in .net why we have Asychronous calling (delegate.BeginInvoke() & delegate.EndInvoke()) as well as Thread class? I'm little confused which one to use when? Now in this particular case, what should I use Asychronous calling or Thread class? I'm using C#.

  • Oracle : Identifying duplicates in a table without index

    - by user288031
When I try to create a unique index on a large table, I get a unique contraint error. The unique index in this case is a composite key of 4 columns. Is there an efficient way to identify the duplicates other than : select col1, col2, col3, col4, count() from Table1 group by col1, col2, col3, col4 having count() 1 The explain plan above shows full table scan with extremely high cost, and just want to find if there is another way. Thanks !

  • In a star schema, are foreign key constraints between facts and dimensions neccessary?

    - by Garett
I'm getting my first exposure to data warehousing, and I’m wondering is it necessary to have foreign key constraints between facts and dimensions. Are there any major downsides for not having them? I’m currently working with a relational star schema. In traditional applications I’m used to having them, but I started to wonder if they were needed in this case. I’m currently working in a SQL Server 2005 environment.

  • Grails/Hibernate max for string type

    - by bsreekanth
Hello, In my table I have a serial number field, which is represneted by string.. It has a prefix and some numbers follow. Eg: ABC1234, ABC2345 etc. How to retrieve the largest value (max equivalent of int type) from this column. In my case it would be ABC2345. I probably could retrieve all the data,, sort it and get the same, but that would be slow. thanks in advance..

  • QueryString From Shared Function

    - by Kezzer
I'm trying to get a query string from a shared function in a code-behind model using VB.NET. You have to use HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString("Query") in order to get it from a shared function, however doing HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString.Count gives back 0, which obviously isn't right in my case as there's many that exist. Is there some sort of issue with using this static call from a shared function?

  • NetworkOnMainThreadException while using AsyncTask

    - by Fansher
Im making an app that uses the internet to retrive information. I get an NetworkOnMainThreadException as i tried to run it on 3.0 and above and have therefore tried to set it up using AsyncTask, but it still gives the exception and i don't know what is wrong. Oddly enough i read on this thread Android NetworkOnMainThreadException inside of AsyncTask that if you just removes the android:targetSdkVersion="10" statement from the manifest file it will be able to run. This works but i don't find it as the right solution to solve the problem this way. So if anyone can tell me what im doing wrong with the AsyncTask i will really appriciate it. Also if there is anybody that knows why removing the statement in the manifest makes it work, im really interested in that also. My code looks like this: public class MainActivity extends Activity { static ArrayList<Tumblr> tumblrs; ListView listView; TextView footer; int offset = 0; ProgressDialog pDialog; View v; String responseBody = null; HttpResponse r; HttpEntity e; String searchUrl; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); getWindow().setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN, WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN); final ConnectivityManager conMgr = (ConnectivityManager) getSystemService(Context.CONNECTIVITY_SERVICE); final NetworkInfo activeNetwork = conMgr.getActiveNetworkInfo(); if (activeNetwork != null && activeNetwork.isConnected()) { setContentView(R.layout.main); try { tumblrs = getTumblrs(); listView = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.list); View v = getLayoutInflater().inflate(R.layout.footer_layout, null); footer = (TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.tvFoot); listView.addFooterView(v); listView.setAdapter(new UserItemAdapter(this, R.layout.listitem)); } catch (ClientProtocolException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (JSONException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } new GetChicks().execute(); footer.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() { @Override public void onClick(View v) { new loadMoreListView().execute(); } }); } else { setContentView(R.layout.nonet); } } public class UserItemAdapter extends ArrayAdapter<Tumblr> { public UserItemAdapter(Context context, int imageViewResourceId) { super(context, imageViewResourceId, tumblrs); } @Override public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = convertView; • pass ...rest to a NetConnection call

    - by dome
I want to pass a rest in a netconnection call, something like this: public function requestData(service : String, ...params) : void { nc.call(service, params); } this doesn't work since the call is expecting each parameter to be separated by commas, like: nc.call(service, params[0], params[1], params[2]); I've read some posts about apply, but I can't find a solution for this specific case.

  • Best way to keep a large number of hobby projects alive; open sourcing?

    - by Daan van Yperen
Because my time is limited I can usually only focus on one or two of my hobby projects, while the others sit there wasting away. I am looking for a solution that would allow me to divide my time better. is open sourcing where I take the role of guiding the project realistic, or are there better solutions? In my case, one project has a reasonably sized community of users going for it but is currently closed source. There have been requests to open source it.

  • Saving an XML that has invalid characters

    - by BDotA
there are code snippets that strip the invalid characters inside a string before we save it as an XML ... but I have one more problem: Let's say my user wants to have a column name like "[MyColumnOne] ...so now I do not want to strip these "[","] well because these are the ones that user has defined and wants to see them so if I use some codes that are stripping the invalid characters they are also removing "[" and "[" but in this case I still need them to be saved... what can I do?
