Can a Gateway Solo5300 laptop be upgraded enough to run Windows XP? It has an Intel Mobile Pentium III processor with 64MB DRAM (PC100) upgradeable to 512MB and a 10GB hard drive.
I'm trying to clone my windows xp installation.
If I back it up using clone zilla and the my xp machine is infected by virus/spyware would I also be bringing the whole mess when I try to back it up.
Do I need the whole partition/ whole disk if I use an external hard drive to backup.
Would the data be formatted on the partition that I choose?
I've installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 in a new server and set up the 4 hard drives with 3 RAID 1 devices, the configuration is such that the first two drives have md0 (swap space) and md1 (/) with the third and fourth drives having md2 (/var).
I've been testing the operation under a drive failure and found that the system boots fine if I remove disk two but if I remove disk one then the system gets to grub and then just restarts. I'm confused as to why grub appears to be loading properly from disk two but then the boot fails.
Have an XP machine with 2 drives configured in a RAID 1 array.
Trying to fix a boot problem, I took the drives out to run chkdsk on them, and I accidentally got them out-of-sync (event logs, etc).
Is there any way to duplicate the contents of one drive onto the other to restore their RAID-ness, or have I really messed myself up?
I installed Windows 8 preview on a VHD image and it seemed to work until I actually started using it. I´m seeing terrible performance. Installing anything makes everything else "stutter" or freeze for up to a couple of seconds at a time.
I looked up hard disk performance in the task manager and this is what I found:
It doesn't seem right it has 2500ms response time while reading/writing at those speeds. Is this an issue with my drive, installation or VHDs in general?
Not a top performance pc but not a low end pc either. I guess you can get a passively cooled video card and a ssd drive, but what about the cpu and the power supply?
I was messing around with the Location tab in "properties" for "My Music" and ended up changing it a few times to directories on another drive.
I quickly decided I didn't like the change and reverted it back.
The My Music folder in my users directory is working fines but now my iTunes directory is labeled as "My Music" and the music directory within is called "My Music".
Describing the issue simply:
D:\iTunes\Music
is labeled as
Computer Local Disk(D:) My Music My Music
Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.
We backup a set of virtual machines to an external USB drive using rsync -a. The source directory is 145G as reported by du -sh, but the target is reporting 181G.
The two file systems are ext3 and the block size is the same, so can someone explain what the discrepancy is?
Can the utility "Installation Monitor" from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools for administrative tasks be used on newer OS's, specifically, Windows Server 2008 R2.
The main thing I am concerned about is it may error will not track things correctly without letting me know that that it errored due to how Windows has changed between 2000 and today.
If that is not the correct tool to use to monitor what a application is writing to the hard drive and registry, can you recommend me what I should use instead?
Hi,
I've looked everywhere for a solution to this. Is there any way to turn off this logging in VNC?
VNC seems to be logging some large updates I'm doing in mysql and taking up my whole hard drive space. The only way to get rid of the log file is to reboot, which I would prefer not to have to do if possible.
Cheers
So that's the serial number of my pre-installed windows copy, I take it. But am I allowed to use it again when, say, I don't know, my system gets crippled by a sneaky virus?
If I format my computer and install windows starter again from a USB drive (speculating. I've never format before, I suppose is completely possible) Is that serial number still valid?
I'm talking about the number printed on the back of my laptop.
I have a production Active Directory Server running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. I would like to make a duplicate of this machine with all setting the same, except the domain would be a slight variation of the current domain (think winnet to winnet2). Would it be easiest to try to clone the hard drive while the machine is running and change the domain on the clone in a different machine or export the data and import it on a different box?
Hi
I am having a problem where the NTFS USN Journal is creating unmovable fragments all over my hard drive. So I have a few questions:
Is it possible to turn the USN Journal feature off?
Which common programs utilise the USN Journal?
If I can't get rid of it, is there a defragmenter which can move this data?
Thanks
While studying for the A+ Exam I was reading about SSD's and I thought to myself that if you had a mobo with a low RAM limit you could use a dedicated SSD purely for Virtual RAM. I looked up some info on line and the info I found said that this was a poor practice but didn't explain why.
Why shouldn't SSD's be used for Virtual Memory and what are your thoughts on a dedicated Virtual Memory drive?
Thank you!
I have Upgraded Ubuntu from version 9.10 to 10.04. Now when I mount any of my extra hard disks the drive name gets an underscore appended to it, as shown below. Which obviously messes up all my pahts. How do I prevent\correct this?

I have a Windows laptop and my spouse has a Mac. Is it possible to share the photo library? The pictures would be stored on a network attached hard drive accessible to both Mac and PC.
Could someone with more PC building experience than me tell me whether these PC components can cooperate fully as a self-made PC?

Thanks in advance! (btw, I know 32 GB RAM is unnecessary, but I want to buy it to use as a reserve)

I installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit edition on my Dell Precision M6400 with an nVidia Quadro Fx 2700M card and I see that even though the screen resolution is set to 1920 X 1200, its not the same as the Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a second hard drive.
Both OSes show that the screen resolution is set at 1920 X 1200 but Ultimate shows more pixels than Enterprise.
I also reinstalled the display driver but in vain.
Any ideas?
TIA
I have a laptop with a busted l.c.d., but otherwise works fine with an external monitor. I was wondering if it is possible to connect it to my main pc as an extra processor(main pc is getting old, it's only single core processor) and if so how? I currently have them connected with a network cable so that I can access the laptop's hard drive but would like to use it to give my pc a bit more power. Both my pc and my laptop have 2 gb ram and are running windows vista sp2
I have copies over one directory to my external hard drive but the file counts are different.
What's the best tool to find out what the differences are between these 2 directories?
I want to build a linux machine to use as a test server (LAMP) and use SVN on it.
I am thinking maybe Ubantu as the OS but what hardware specs would I need. I think the entire site is less than a gig but if SVN is going to keep multiple versions than wouldnt I need a huge hard drive?
Any tips would be nice.
Thanks!!

A while back I set my computer up to sync folders on a shared network drive. I didn't choose my folders carefully and ended up with a huge amount of files to sync, which took forever.
I would like to stop sync on those folders, then later select some smaller subfolders to sync. I believe this means I first must delete the existing sync partnerships, but there is no "Delete" option when I list them in Sync Center.
How can I delete existing sync partnerships?
