  • What is the most efficient procedure for implementing a sortable ajax list on the backend?

    - by HenryL
The most common method is to assign a sequential order field for each item in the list and do an update that maintains the sequence with every ajax sort operation. Unfortunately, this requires an update to each item of the list every time someone sorts. This is fine for small lists, but what's the best way to implement sorting for larger lists that are constantly updated? I am looking for something that minimizes DB IO.

  • SQLServer using too much memory

    - by Israel Pereira Valverde
I have installed on my desktop machine (with windows 7) SQLServer 2008 R2 Express. I have only one local server running (./SQLEXPRESS) but the sqlserver process is taking ALL the RAM possible. With an machine with 3GB of RAM the things starts to get slow, so I limited the maximun amount of RAM in the server, and now, constantly the SQLServer give some error messages that the memory is not enought. It's using 1GB of RAM with only one LOCAL server with 2 databases completely empty, how 1GB of RAM isn't enought ? When the process start it's using an really acceptable amount of memory (around 80MB) but it's keep increasing until it reaches the maximun defined and start to complain about having not enought memory available. In that point I have to restart the server to use it again. I have read about an hotfix to solve one of the errors I got from sqlserver: There is insufficient system memory in resource pool 'internal' to run this query But it's already installed on my sqlserver. Why it's using so much memory?

  • django related_name for field clashes.

    - by Absolute0
I am getting a field clash in my models: class Visit(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) visitor = models.ForeignKey(User) Error: One or more models did not validate: profiles.visit: Accessor for field 'user' clashes with related field 'User.visit_set'. Add a related_name argument to the definition for 'user'. profiles.visit: Accessor for field 'visitor' clashes with related field 'User.visit_set'. Add a related_name argument to the definition for 'visitor'. what would be a sensible 'related_field' to use on visitor field? This model basically represents the visits that take place to a particular user's profile. Also should I replace any of the ForeignKey's with a ManyToManyField? The logic is a bit confusing. Edit: This seems to fix it, but I am unsure if its what I want. :) class Visit(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) visitor = models.ForeignKey(User, related_name='visitors')

  • Datamapper Clone Record w/ New ID

    - by BouncePast
class Item include DataMapper::Resource property :id, Serial property :title, String end item = Item.new(:title = 'Title 1') # :id = 1 item_clone = Item.first(:id = 1).clone item_clone.save This does "clone" the object as described but how can this be done so it applies a different ID once the record is saved, e.g. #

  • How do I connect to SQL Server with VB?

    - by Wayne Werner
Hi, I'm trying to connect to a SQL server from VB. The SQL server is across the network uses my windows login for authentication. I can access the server using the following python code: import odbc conn = odbc.odbc('SignInspection') c = conn.cursor() c.execute("SELECT * FROM list_domain") c.fetchone() This code works fine, returning the first result of the SELECT. However, I've been trying to use the SqlClient.SqlConnection in VB, and it fails to connect. I've tried several different connection strings but this is the current code: Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim conn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection conn.ConnectionString = "data source=signinspection;initial catalog=signinspection;integrated security=SSPI" Try conn.Open() MessageBox.Show("Sweet Success") 'Insert some code here, woo Catch ex As Exception MessageBox.Show("Failed to connect to data source.") MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()) Finally conn.Close() End Try End Sub It fails miserably, and it gives me an error that says "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred... (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) I'm fairly certain it's my connection string, but nothing I've found has given me any solid examples (server=mySQLServer is not a solid example) of what I need to use. Thanks! -Wayne

  • SQLite - ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE

    - by Alix Axel
MySQL has something like this: INSERT INTO visits (ip, hits) VALUES ('127.0.0.1', 1) ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE hits = hits + 1; As far as I'm know this feature doesn't exist in SQLite, what I want to know is if there is any way to archive the same effect without having to execute two queries. Also, if this is not possible, what do you prefer: SELECT + (INSERT or UPDATE) or UPDATE (+ INSERT if UPDATE fails)

  • Is there any online free movie information api's?

    - by Gary Willoughby
For music there is the Gracenote CDDB SDK, etc. but does an online service exist for getting information about movies? The only solution i can see at the minute is querying IMDB and scraping the page. The problem i have is that i have a list of film titles and i want to retrieve stuff like the plot, director, cast, when released, get dvd cover art, etc..

  • How to find date ranges in records with consecutive dates and duplicate data

    - by alan s
    There's probably any easy solution for this, but I can't see it. I have a table with consecutive dates and often duplicate associated data for several of these consecutive dates: Date Col1 Col2 5/13/2010 1 A 5/14/2010 1 A 5/15/2010 2 B 5/16/2010 1 A 5/17/2010 1 A 5/18/2010 3 C 5/19/2010 3 C 5/20/2010 3 C Using MS T-SQL, I wish to find the start and end dates for each run of distinct Col1 and Col2 values: StartDate EndDate Col1 Col2 5/13/2010 5/14/2010 1 A 5/15/2010 5/15/2010 2 B 5/16/2010 5/17/2010 1 A 5/18/2010 5/20/2010 3 C Assumptions: There are never any missing dates. Col1 and Col2 are not null. Any ideas - preferably that don't use cursors? Many thanks, -alan

  • Django User "per project" group assignation

    - by Ben G
Hi, Here's my problem : my site has users, which can create projects, and access other user's projects. Each project can assign different rights to users. So, i could have Project A : user "John" is in group "manager" , and Project "B" user "John" is in group "worker". How could I use the Django User authentication model to do that ? From a SQL point a view, what i would like is to be able to add "project_id" in the primary key for the "auth_user_groups" table. I don't think profile is of any help here. Any advice ? UPDATE : "worker" and "manager" are just two examples of the permission group (or "roles") that my application defines. There will be more in the future. Eg : i will probably also have "admin", "reporting", etc...

  • How to figure out which record has been deleted in an effiecient way?

    - by janetsmith
Hi, I am working on an in-house ETL solution, from db1 (Oracle) to db2 (Sybase). We needs to transfer data incrementally (Change Data Capture?) into db2. I have only read access to tables, so I can't create any table or trigger in Oracle db1. The challenge I am facing is, how to detect record deletion in Oracle? The solution which I can think of, is by using additional standalone/embedded db (e.g. derby, h2 etc). This db contains 2 tables, namely old_data, new_data. old_data contains primary key field from tahle of interest in Oracle. Every time ETL process runs, new_data table will be populated with primary key field from Oracle table. After that, I will run the following sql command to get the deleted rows: SELECT old_data.id FROM old_data WHERE old_data.id NOT IN (SELECT new_data.id FROM new_data) I think this will be a very expensive operation when the volume of data become very large. Do you have any better idea of doing this? Thanks.

  • Creating a Group of Groups in Django

    - by Greg
I'm creating my own Group model; I'm not referring to the builtin Group model. I want each hroup to be a member of another group (it's parent), but there is the one "top" group that doesn't have a parent group. The admin interface won't let me create a group without entering a parent. I get the error personnel_group.parent_id may not be NULL. My Group model looks like this: class Group(models.Model): name = models.CharField(max_length=50) parent = models.ForeignKey('self', blank=True, null=True) order = models.IntegerField() icon = models.ImageField(upload_to='groups', blank=True, null=True) description = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) How can I accomplish this? Thanks.

  • Deploying and hosting scala in the cloud?

    - by TiansHUo
I am starting a web app considering scalability as one of the top priorities. What would be the benefits of this: cassandra scala lift vs the traditional LAMP on the cloud? Since from what I've read, please correct me, the cloud itself is scalable I have never seen anyone deploy scala on the cloud before. Is it worth the effort to learn the platform? Is it ready for production use?

  • Date range intersection in SQL

    - by Will
I have a table where each row has a start and stop date-time. These can be arbitrarily short or long spans. I want to query the sum duration of the intersection of all rows with two start and stop date-times. How can you do this in MySQL? Or do you have to select the rows that intersect the query start and stop times, then calculate the actual overlap of each row and sum it client-side?

  • mysql and indexes with more than one column

    - by clarkk
How to use indexes with more than one column The original index has an index on block_id, but is it necesarry when it's already in the unique index with two column? Indexes with more than one column (a,b,c) you can search for a, b and c you can search for a and b you can search for a you can not search for a and c Does this apply to unique indexes too? table id block_id account_id name indexes origin PRIMARY KEY (`id`) UNIQUE KEY `block_id` (`block_id`,`account_id`) KEY `block_id` (`block_id`), KEY `account_id` (`account_id`), indexes alternative PRIMARY KEY (`id`) UNIQUE KEY `block_id` (`block_id`,`account_id`) KEY `account_id` (`account_id`),

  • MySQL & PHP: auto connect to DB or to properly way to pass host/db to MySQL methods

    - by SODA
Hi, does anyone know of a known method in PHP to auto connect to MySQL db/table in case an app is using multiple databases on multiple hosts? Question 1: are there scripts around that allow to auto connect to necessary host/DB based on query? Question 2: if above is not possible, is there a known approach to properly passing host/DB info to make sure app is properly connected before executing the query?

  • How to store a scaleable sized extensible event log?

    - by firoso
Hello everyone! I've been contemplating writing a simple "event log" that takes a paramater list and stores event messages in a log file, trouble is, I forsee this file growing to be rather large (assume 1M entries or more) the question is, how can I implement this system without pulling teeth, I know that SQL would be a possible way to go. XML would be ideal but not really practical for scaleability if i'm not going nuts. Example Log Entry -----Time Date-------- ---------Sender----------------------- ---------Tags---------- --Message---------- 12/24/2008 24:00:00 $DOMAIN\SYSTEM\Application$ :Trivial: :Notification: It's Christmas in 1s

  • Building a wiki like data model in rails question.

    - by lillq
I have a data model in which I would like to have an item that has a description that can be edited. I would like to also keep track of all edits to the item. I am running into issues with my current strategy, which is: class Item < ActiveRecord::Base has_one :current_edit, :class_name => "Edit", :foreign_key => "current_edit_id" has_many :edits end class Edit < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :item end Can the Item have multiple associations to the same class like this? I was thinking that I should switch to keeping track of the edit version in the Edit object and then just sorting the has_many relationship base on this version.

  • Update query with conditional?

    - by dmontain
I'm not sure if this possible. If not, let me know. I have a PDO mysql that updates 3 fields. $update = $mypdo->prepare("UPDATE tablename SET field1=:field1, field2=:field2, field3=:field3 WHERE key=:key"); But I want field3 to be updated only when $update3 = true; (meaning that the update of field3 is controlled by a conditional statement) Is this possible to accomplish with a single query? I could do it with 2 queries where I update field1 and field2 then check the boolean and update field3 if needed in a separate query. //run this query to update only fields 1 and 2 $update_part1 = $mypdo->prepare("UPDATE tablename SET field1=:field1, field2=:field2 WHERE key=:key"); //if field3 should be update, run a separate query to update it separately if ($update3){ $update_part2 = $mypdo->prepare("UPDATE tablename SET field3=:field3 WHERE key=:key"); } But hopefully there is a way to accomplish this in 1 query?
