  • Upgrading from MySQL Server to MariaDB

    - by Korrupzion
I've heard that MariaDB has better performance than MySQL-Server. I'm running software that makes an intensive use of MySQL, thats why I want to try upgrading to MariaDB. Please tell me your experiences doing this conversion, and instructions or tips. Also, which files I should take care of for making a backup of MySQL-Server, so if something goes wrong with MariaDB, I could rollback to MySQL without issues? I would use this but i'm not sure if it's enough to get a full backup of MySQL-Server confs and databases mysqldump --all-databases backup /etc/mysql My Environment: uname -a (Debian Lenny) Linux charizard 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Sep 16 15:56:38 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux MySQL Server Version: Server version 5.0.51a-24+lenny4 MySQL Client: 5.0.51a Statistics: Threads: 25 Questions: 14690861 Slow queries: 9 Opens: 21428 Flush tables: 1 Open tables: 128 Queries per second avg: 162.666 Uptime: 1 day 1 hour 5 min 13 sec Thanks! • Text editor for Mac that will open any file

    - by Dinah
In Windows, every text editor I encountered allowed me to drag and drop any file type into it and it opened. Apparently, Mac app developers have a different philosophy because I can't find a simple free text editor for OS X that will do this. TextWrangler came highly recommended but it can't accomplish this simple feat. Can anyone suggest one? Edit apparently on at least some editors, there is a distinction between drag/drop in the document list area vs. the typing area. In addition to the accepted answer, this is one thing to be aware of. I still don't know why it doesn't work in TextEdit, but this is true for TextWrangler and Smultron.

  • How to get rid of NAT in a LAN?

    - by Alberto
Currently the LAN I manage is organized as follows: internal network (192.168.1.0) which uses a Linux server as a gateway (internal address on interface br0 192.168.1.1, external address on interface br1 10.0.0.2) through NAT; then the 10.0.0.0 network has another gateway (10.0.0.1) which through another NAT connects the whole thing to the internet. What I would like to achieve is to configure the Linux server so that the first layer of NAT is no more necessary, so that for example a computer in the 10.0.0.0 network can ping every computer in the 192.168.1.0 network. I deleted this iptables rule: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o br1 -j SNAT --to-source 10.0.0.2, but of course now computers on 192.168.1.0 cannot reach the internet; ip forwarding is of course enabled. What's missing here? Thanks

  • Accessing Windows from Linux/Mac by name using TCP/IP

    - by stevekuo
What are some solutions to access Windows by its computer name from Linux and Mac using TCP/IP. That is, from terminal I want to be able to ping my Windows PCs using its host name. My setup is: Various machines running Ubuntu, Windows XP and OS X. Networked using a consumer grade wireless router which provides DHCP. The only DNS is the ISP's, which resolves Internet names and not local host names. The Windows machines can ping each other by name. The Ubuntu and OS X machines can only ping Windows by IP address (name doesn't work).

  • Tutorial: Linux Commands: Making Bash Error Messages Friendlier

Bash error messages, like so many error messages, can be more cryptic than helpful. But the good news is bash has a built-in mechanism for creating your own customized error messages, and you don't have to be an ace programmer to do it. Ubuntu and openSUSE already use this; Akkana Peck shows us how to do it ourselves.

  • How are thumbnails stored on Mac OS X?

    - by Alberto Moriconi
I have noticed that thumbnails on Mac OS X don't seem to be generated every time I open a folder, but to be somehow "cached" instead. I wasn't able, however, to find a folder where they clearly look to be stored. I thought then they could be saved as some kind of metadata; i found, however, that when deleting a file (e.g. from the Desktop) and saving immediately after a file by the same name, the preview for the previous file is showed for ~ a second. Are they stored separately from data? How and when are they invalidated (e.g. only when a file by the same name appears in the same directory)?

  • Suggestions on providing HA access to an external (fibre) RAID subsystem

    - by user145198
We are looking at upgrading our storage capacity with an external RAID subsystem that has redundant (2) fibre controllers, each controller has 4 x 8 Gbps fibre ports. I would like to make access to this storage system occur via HA Linux. Ideally I would connect 2 fibre ports from each controller into each Linux server, and then export either NFS or iSCSI via a 10 Gbe interface. I have seen plenty of references to DRBD, however all of those references tend to use block storage that is solely attached to each machine, rather than having a shared block storage device, so I am unsure if DRBD could (or should) be used in this case. Ideas?

  • Noisy audio recording in Ubuntu Linux

    - by Haresh K Miriyala
I'm unable to record audio without noise on my Ubuntu laptop . It is not a grounding problem . My windows os is able to record voice without the static noise so, my hardware is fine . I read in the Windows forums that the os has software noise filtering mechanism that's automatically enabled. How do I do the same in Ubuntu? If not, please let me know how to filter the static noise. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • How do I use memmap to reserve memory on boot?

    - by alexl
Ive got a laptop with some corrupted ram addresses, so I'm trying to use memmap to reserve them before linux boots up. Ive been trying to use memmap=10M$1024M' as a kernel boot option, but linux crashes (with no errors) and restarts. If I use a different syntax for memmap likememmap=1023M@0M` it boots fine. Do I have to specify a certain size block to reserve or could my kernel version not support reserving memory with memmap? Maybe I'm better off using memmap=exactmap, and if so, could somebody point me to a good faq on how to use it?

  • Creating a custom NAS compatible with the Mac Time machine and for media streaming

    - by Bobby Alexander
I am planning to assemble a custom NAS machine using an Intel Atom processor. I need the NAS for the following purposes: It should be accessible from by Windows PC so that I can dump data on the NAS (installations, media etc) It should be accessible from my Macbook for the above use. I should be able to use it with the Mac time machine software for backup. The media should be available to my PS3 for streaming. I should be able to access it from my iphone. All the above features should be available over wireless. The time machine feature is very important. Is this even possible? Can someone provide resources on how I can assemble such a machine and setup the required software on it? Much appreciated.

  • Is it really necessary to call /bin/sync twice before an unmanaged power-off?

    - by Jeremy Friesner
Hi all, My company sells an "embedded device" which is implemented as a headless Linux box with ext4 on an internal SSD. Some of our users have a habit of doing a "save current settings" on this box, and then cutting power to the unit as soon as the unit reports that the save completed (ie two seconds later). This was causing occasional corruption of the saved files, as the data wouldn't always get flushed to the SSD before the power went out. So I tweaked my software to run /bin/sync immediately after writing the file (after closing the file handle but before notifying the user that the save completed). This appears to fix the issue, but my coworker says that one call to /bin/sync isn't sufficient, and that to be really safe I ought to run /bin/sync twice in a row. That sounds like paranoia to me... Perhaps a habit from earlier versions of Linux or unix whose sync utility didn't work reliably. Does his advice have merit, or should one call to /bin/sync suffice?

  • Problem with SVN filename encoding on Mac OS X

    - by Albert
I have some filename with some Unicode character in it. All filenames on Mac OS X are UTF8 encoded. Also $LANG is set to en_US.UTF-8. However, it seems svn has some problems with that: az@ip212 1054 (Integration) %ls Abbildungen Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt AllgemeineAnmerkungen.rtf Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.rtf Geogebra Vorlagen Texte az@ip212 1055 (Integration) %svn ls Abbildungen/ AllgemeineAnmerkungen.rtf Geogebra/ Texte/ Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.rtf Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt Vorlagen/ az@ip212 1056 (Integration) %svn del Verb*.odt svn: Use --force to override this restriction svn: 'Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt' is not under version control az@ip212 1057 (Integration) %svn status ? Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt ! Verbesserungsvorschläge_Applets.odt az@ip212 1058 (Integration) % As you can see, svn del does not recognize the filename. And even svn status gets confused about it. How can I fix this? I also tried with LC_CTYPE=$LANG LC_ALL=$LANG LC=$LANG but no change.

  • Trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (without using MacPorts)

    - by gjvis
I'm having trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 (build 20100307) from the prebuilt installer on Mac OS X 10.5.8. The installer is halting telling me that I need to install Python 2.6 to continue. I've installed the latest version of Python (2.6.5) twice now but it's not helping. which python is reporting /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/python, but I can see that I also have 2.3 and 2.5 in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions directory, which I suspect is being picked up by the installer ahead of the 2.6 install. If possible I'd like to install Mercurial and Python without having to resort to MacPorts, but if that is the only option then so be it :)

  • A Guide to Windows Hacking for Mac Users?

    - by Carlton Gibson
I am a long-time Mac user looking to gain a decent understanding of Windows. I'm not really interested in the history except as it is still relevant to Windows 7. I'm competent with the Mac and UNIX/Linux environment. I'm live in C, Objective-C, Bash, Python, JavaScript, AppleScript and PHP. As such I want something that is introductory but not aimed at beginners. Can anyone recommend a decent book (or other resource) to get me started? TIA
