  • PostgreSQL or MS SQL Server?

    - by mmiika
I'm considering using PostgreSQL with a .Net web app. Basically 3 reasons: Mature Geo Queries Small footprint + Linux Price I'm wondering a bit about tools though, SQL Server Profiler and query plans and performance monitors have been helpful. How is this world with Postgres? Some other things I should consider? Edit: Will most likely use NHibernate as ORM

  • SQL Server and Table-Valued User-Defined Function optimizations

    - by John Leidegren
If I have an UDF that returns a table, with thousands of rows, but I just want a particular row from that rowset, will SQL Server be able to handle this effciently? SELECT * FROM dbo.MyTableUDF() WHERE ID = 1 To what extent is the query optimizer capable of reasoning about this type of query? How are Table-Valued UDFs different from traidtional views if they take no parameters? Any gotchas I should know about?

  • Convert ASP.NET membership system to secure password storage

    - by wrburgess
I have a potential client that set up their website and membership system in ASP.NET 3.5. When their developer set up the system, it seems he turned off the security/hashing aspect of password storage and everything is stored in the clear. Is there a process to reinstall/change the secure password storage of ASP.NET membership without changing all of the passwords in the database? The client is worried that they'll lose their customers if they all have to go through a massive password change. I've always installed with security on by default, thus I don't know the effect of a switchover. Is there a way to convert the entire system to a secure password system without major effects on the users?

  • Does SQL Server CE 3.5 SP1 install everything?

    - by Vaccano
I am trying to set up a device remotely. I found this link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=FCE9ABBF-F807-45D6-A457-AB5615001C8F&displaylang=en That has SQL Server CE 3.5 SP1. I read the whole page, and can't seem to find out for sure if SP1 is a full install or if it needs SQLServer CE 3.5 first. Does anyone know?

  • Exchange IMAP4 connector - Error Event ID 2006

    - by MikeB
Hi, A couple of users in my organisation use IMAP4 to connect to Exchange 2007 (Update rollup 9 applied) because they prefer Thunderbird / Postbox clients. One of the users is generating errors in the Application Log as follows: An exception Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ConversionFailedException occurred while converting message Imap4Message 1523, user "*******", folder *********, subject: "******", date: "*******" into MIME format. Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ConversionFailedException: Message content has become corrupted. ---> System.ArgumentException: Value should be a valid content type in the form 'token/token' Parameter name: value at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Mime.ContentTypeHeader.set_Value(String value) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.MimeStreamWriter.WriteHeader(HeaderId type, String data) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ItemToMimeConverter.WriteMimeStreamAttachment(StreamAttachmentBase attachment, MimeFlags flags) --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ItemToMimeConverter.WriteMimeStreamAttachment(StreamAttachmentBase attachment, MimeFlags flags) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ItemToMimeConverter.WriteMimeAttachment(MimePartInfo part, MimeFlags flags) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ItemToMimeConverter.WriteMimePart(MimePartInfo part, MimeFlags mimeFlags) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ItemToMimeConverter.WriteMimeParts(List`1 parts, MimeFlags mimeFlags) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ItemToMimeConverter.WriteMimePart(MimePartInfo part, MimeFlags mimeFlags) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ImapItemConverter.<>c__DisplayClass2.<WriteMimePart>b__0() at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ConvertUtils.CallCts(Trace tracer, String methodName, String exceptionString, CtsCall ctsCall) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ImapItemConverter.WriteMimePart(ItemToMimeConverter converter, MimeStreamWriter writer, OutboundConversionOptions options, MimePartInfo partInfo, MimeFlags conversionFlags) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ImapItemConverter.GetBody(Stream outStream) at Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Storage.ImapItemConverter.GetBody(Stream outStream, UInt32[] indices) From my reading around it seems that the suggestion is to ask users to log in to Outlook / OWA and view the messages there. However, having logged in as the users myself, the messages cannot be found either through searching or by browsing the folder detailed in the log entry. The server returns the following error to the client: "The message could not be retrieved using the IMAP4 protocol. The message has not been deleted and may be accessible using either Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access. You can also try contacting the original sender of the message to find out about the contents of the message. Retrieval of this message will be retried when the server is updated with a fix that addresses the problem." Messages were transferred in to Exchange by copying them from the old Apple Xserve, accessed using IMAP. So my question, finally: 1. Is there any way to get the IMAP Exchange connector to rebuild its cache of messages since it doesn't seem to be pulling them directly from the MAPI store? 2. Alternatively, if there is no database, any ideas on why these messages don't appear in Outlook or OWA would be gratefully received. Many thanks, Mike

  • SMS to server service

Hi, I need to find a service that will allow me to send and receive SMS on a server for a project. The project requires that a user will have up to 8 keyword options to send, and will receive a different response back based on the keyword that they enter. Does anyone know of services that I could look into that will allow this? Thanks.

    - by n8wrl
I am using the performance dashboard with our SQL Server 2005 databases and it lists what it considers to be missing indexes. But some of those indexes DO exist! They are not disabled, and they are defined exactly as the dashboard says they should be. Why are they reported as missing?

  • XQuery performance in SQL Server

    - by Carl Hörberg
    Why does this quite simple xquery takes 10min to execute in sql server (the 2mb xml document stored in one column) compared to 14 seconds when using oxygen/file based querying? SELECT model.query('declare default element namespace "http://www.sbml.org/sbml/level2"; for $all_species in //species, $all_reactions in //reaction where data($all_species/@compartment)="plasma_membrane" and $all_reactions/listOfReactants/speciesReference/@species=$all_species/@id return <result>{data($all_species/@id)}</result>') from sbml;

  • Sql Server string to date conversion

    - by JosephStyons
I want to convert a string like this: '10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM' into the equivalent DATETIME value in Sql Server. In Oracle, I would say this: TO_DATE('10/15/2008 10:06:32 PM','MM/DD/YYYY HH:MI:SS AM') This question implies that I must parse the string into one of the standard formats, and then convert using one of those codes. That seems ludicrous for such a mundane operation. Is there an easier way?

  • What's a way for a client to automatically resolve the ip address of a server?

    - by zooropa
The project I am working on is a client/server architecture. In a LAN environment, I want the client's to be able to automatically determine the server's address. I want to avoid having to manually configure each client with the ip address of the server. What is the best way to do this? Some alternatives I have thought about doing are: The server could listen for broadcast packets from the clients. The message from the client would be a request for the IP address of the server. The server would respond with its address. The machine running my project's server could also have a bind server running. The LAN's router could be configured to use it as one of its DNS servers. I think I saw that there is a bind library. Does that mean I can build the bind service into my server so that bind doesn't have to be installed on the server? Any other ideas? What have you done in the past? What are the pros/cons of these approaches and others that might be suggested? Thanks for your help!
