  I run postgres 9.1 / ruby 1.9.2 / rails 3.1.0 on a maxbook air for local dev. It's all been running smoothly for months, (though this is the first time I've done development on a mac.) It's a macbook air from last year, and today I got the mac osx software update message as I have a few times before, and my system downloaded approx 450mb of updates and restarted. It now says it's on OSX 10.7.3. Point is, postgres has stopped working, when I start my thin server (mirror heroku cedar) as normal, and then browse to my rails app I get: PG::Error could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"? What happened? After browsing around a few questions I'm still confused, but here's some extra info: Running psql from command line gives same error I can run pgadmin 3 and connect via it and run SQL no problems Running which psql shows the version as /usr/bin/psql I created a PostgreSQL user back when I got the mac (it's always been on lion) I've no idea why, almost certainly I was following a tutorial which I neglected to store in my notes. Point is I am aware there is a _postgres user as well. I know it's rubbish, but apart from a note on passwords, I don't have any extra info on how I configured postgres - though the obvious implication is that I did not use the _postgres user. Anyone have suggestions or information on what might have changed / what I can try to debug and fix? Thanks. • Broken filesystem on Windows XP / 7 virtual machine

  I created a virtual machine with Windows XP as the guest system in Microsoft's Virtual PC that ships along with Windows 7. I then installed Virtualbox and began running the MS machine in it. It worked fine. Then, I accidentally started the machine in Microsoft's Virtual PC again. The screen stayed blank, so after a while, realizing my mistake, I closed the Machine. Since then, the VM won't start any more, claiming massive file system problems. Starting Windows in normal mode results in a SOMETHING_FILESYSTEM blue screen; I can start in protected mode and run a checkdisk. That will fix something on every run, but every time I restart, it will start again. I tried re-booting the VM with the Windows CD and doing a repair install. I didn't watch whether that worked out, but I'm caught in the reset / check disk / reset cycle again. Is there anything VM specific that can still be done? On a physical machine, I would say reformat. Is there any way to get hold of the data on the virtual machine through either Virtual PC or Virtualbox? It was an experimental machine, but I had started entering some data on it that would be nice to recover.

• MySQL Master - Master Broken

  I've Inherited a Mysql master master system, I've noticed the second master (lets call it slave from now on as it's running on a 'slave' machine) stopped getting its db's updated. I saw that Master: Slave_IO_Running: Yes Slave_SQL_Running: Yes Slave: (with an error I truncated) Slave_IO_Running: Yes Slave_SQL_Running: No Last_Errno: 1062 Last_Error: Error 'Duplicate entry '3' for key 'PRIMARY'' on [...] I don't know what caused it to process considering we cant get duplicate there. What's important is to resume normal operations; Right now I've stop slave; on the Master and stop slave; on the Slave because I saw that if I change records on the Slave the changes Do Get Propagated to Master which is in active use. How do I: Force sync EVERYTHING from master to slave without affecting data on master? Then hopefully have slave pickup replication as usual? UPDATE OK I Tried deleting all tables on slave then it complained in that error section that the 'table' doesnt exist. So i made a no data dump of Master, and made sure I have only empty tables in Secondary (slave). I start slave; on slave BUT now it's complaining about bloody alter table statements for instance: Last_Errno: 1060 Last_Error: Error 'Duplicate column name [...] Query: 'ALTER TABLE [...] How to skip the fracking alter statements I just want to replicate the bloody data and be done with it, my tables have the lates changes already FFS and now its complaining about changes made after the replication seized weeks ago How do I reset the log or something? OUTSTANDING Why would this start happening? The "Secondary" is propagating to "Primary". "Primary" is not propagating to "Secondary". But any fixes I tried to do left it in the same state Yes-Yes Yes-No with same Last_Error. I think around that time the server was taken off the network, could that confuse MySQL in some way?

• /dev/input/uinput Device appears to be 'broken'

  I'm trying to setup Pystromo so that I can remap the keys on my Belkin N52TE gamepad. Pystromo basically captures the key strokes and then outputs the remapped keystrokes to the uinput device. However, at the moment it simply swallows the input and outputs absolutely nothing. I've tracked the issue to something being wrong with my uinput device, with the smoking gun being: # ls -l /dev/input/uinput crw-rw---- 1 root plugdev 10, 223 Dec 31 2009 /dev/input/uinput # cat /dev/input/uinput cat: /dev/input/uinput: No such device The uinput module is loaded, and can be clearly seen via lsmod. Anyone seen this before, or can think of something worth attempting? Current Setup Gentoo Linux Kernel 2.6.32 (Gentoo Sources 2.6.32-r1) HP DV7 Laptop Output dmesg dmesg | grep uinput does nothing, and no new lines appear if I run modprobe -r uinput && modprobe uinput.
