  • Entity Framework How to specify paramter type in generated SQL (SQLServer 2005) Nvarchar vs Varchar

    In entity framework I have an Entity 'Client' that was generated from a database. There is a property called 'Account' it is defined in the storage model as: <Property Name="Account" Type="char" Nullable="false" MaxLength="6" /> And in the Conceptual Model as: <Property Name="Account" Type="String" Nullable="false" /> When select statements are generated using a variable for Account i.e. where m.Account == myAccount... Entity Framework generates a paramaterized query with a paramater of type NVarchar(6). The problem is that the column in the table is data type of char(6). When this is executed there is a large performance hit because of the data type difference. Account is an index on the table and instead of using the index I believe an Index scan is done. Anyone know how to force EF to not use Unicode for the paramater and use Varchar(6) instead?

    I am being asked to alter a system to include the ability to have pay differentials based on hours worked. The old method included a stored procedure (MSSQL2000 db) that did the basics, but simply knows the start and end of every shift. So, this is the information I start with: EMPLOYEE | TYPE | HOURS | INSTAMP | OUTSTAMP Dave | Hourly | 8.643055 | 2011-01-08 07:57:35.557 | 2011-01-08 16:36:10.120 And I need to turn that into something like: EMPLOYEE | TYPE | HOURS | INSTAMP | OUTSTAMP Dave | Hourly | 4.00 | 2011-01-08 08:00:00.000 | 2011-01-08 12:00:00.000 Dave | ShiftDiff1 | 4.50 | 2011-01-08 12:00:00.000 | 2011-01-08 16:30:00.000 The ShiftDiff's range from hours to certain days, to a combo of both. Should I try to make the SQL2000 SP do this or pass the info back to my ASP.NET(C#) app and let it handle it, then send back?

    I have this procedure i my package: PROCEDURE pr_export_blob( p_name IN VARCHAR2, p_blob IN BLOB, p_part_size IN NUMBER); I would like for parameter p_blob to be either BLOB or CLOB. When I call this procedure with BLOB parameter, everything is fine. When I call it with CLOB parameter, I get compilation error: PLS-00306: wrong number or types of arguments in call to 'pr_export_blob' Is there a way to write a procedure, that can take either of those types as parameter? Some kind of a superclass maybe?

  • Is there an ORM that supports composition w/o Joins

    EDIT: Changed title from "inheritance" to "composition". Left body of question unchanged. I'm curious if there is an ORM tool that supports inheritance w/o creating separate tables that have to be joined. Simple example. Assume a table of customers, with a Bill-to address, and a table of vendors, with a remit-to address. Keep it simple and assume one address each, not a child table of addresses for each. These addresses will have a handful of values in common: address 1, address 2, city, state/province, postal code. So let's say I'd have a class "addressBlock" and I want the customers and vendors to inherit from this class, and possibly from other classes. But I do not want separate tables that have to be joined, I want the columns in the customer and vendor tables respectively. Is there an ORM that supports this? The closest question I have found on StackOverflow that might be the same question is linked below, but I can't quite figure if the OP is asking what I am asking. He seems to be asking about foregoing inheritance precisely because there will be multiple tables. I'm looking for the case where you can use inheritance w/o generating the multiple tables.     I have table with pageId, parentPageId, title columns. Is there a way to return unordered nested list using asp.net, cte, stored procedure, UDF... anything? Table looks like this: PageID ParentId Title 1 null Home 2 null Products 3 null Services 4 2 Category 1 5 2 Category 2 6 5 Subcategory 1 7 5 SubCategory 2 8 6 Third Level Category 1 ... Result should look like this: Home Products Category 1 SubCategory 1 Third Level Category 1 SubCategory 2 Category 2 Services Ideally, list should contain <a> tags as well, but I hope I can add it myself if I find a way to create <ul> list. EDIT 1: I thought that already there is a solution for this, but it seems that there isn't. I wanted to keep it simple as possible and to escape using ASP.NET menu at any cost, because it uses tables by default. Then I have to use CSS Adapters etc. Even if I decide to go down the "ASP.NET menu" route I was able to find only this approach: http://aspalliance.com/822 which uses DataAdapter and DataSet :( Any more modern or efficient way?

  • Upsert - Efficient Update or Insert in VB.Net, SQL Server

    I'm trying to understand how to streamline the process of inserting a record if none exists or updating a record if it already exists. I'm not using stored procedures, although maybe that would be the most efficient way of doing this. The actual scenario in which this is necessary is saving a user preference/setting to my SettingsUser table. In MS Access I would typically pull a DAO recordset looking for the specified setting. If the recordset comes back empty then I know I need to add a new record which I can do with the same recordset object. On the other hand, if it isn't empty, I can just update the setting's value right away. In theory, this is only two database operations. What is the recommended way of doing this in .NET?

    I got into a deadlock issue where I am struggling find the root-cause...The Deadlock graph suggests that an UPDATE statement became the victim over a SELECT statement... What puzzles me is that the UPDATE statement is trying to acquire an index on some other table that is never referred in update statement... This is how my UPDATE statement looks like... UPDATE Table set col1 = @P1 where col2 = @P2 This statement acquired a X lock on the col2 index, but also tries to acquire an index on a column defined in some other table that is no way related to the UPDATE statement... And the SELECT statement that won the deadlock situation had nothing to do with the table or index in the update statement but tried to acquire an index on the table in UPDATE statement. eventually causing the DEADLOCK.

I get the following error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. But when I try to run var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t1 in DB.Table1 where t1.Date >= DataTime.Now select t1.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a OR var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t2 in DB.Table2 where t2.Date = DataTime.Now select t2.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a It works! I'm sure that there both IN queries contain some customers ids.

  • Performance optimization for SQL Server: decrease stored procedures execution time or unload the ser

    We have a web service which provides search over hotels. There is a problem with performance: a single request to the service takes around 5000 ms. Almost all of the time is spent in database by executing storing procedures. During the request our server (mssql2008) consumes ~90% of the processor time. When 2 requests are made in parallel the average time grows and is around 7000 ms. When number of request is increasing, the average time of response is increasing as well. We have 20-30 requests per minute. Which kind of optimization is the best in this case having in mind that the goal is to provide stable response time for the service: 1) Try to decrease the stored procedures execution time 2) Try to find the way how to unload the server It is interesting to hear from people who deal with booking sites.

Each result requires three columns based on the type and its row count. The outcome should be one row with many columns. Here is what the result should look like: Revolving1_Firm Revolving1_Balance Revolving1_Pmt Revolving2_Firm Revolving2_Balance Revolving2_Pmt Realestate1_Firm Realestate1_Balance Realestate1_Pmt Vehicle1_Firm Vehicle1_Balance Vehicle1_Pmt Amex 10000 2000 Discover 20000 4000 Chase 100000 1500 Wells Fargo 40000 900 How do you pivot based on the bit fields (Revolving, Installment, & Mortgage) and retain the proper count so that that each column gets count # appended to it?

    I am moving an old store from a Win2003 IIS6 server to a Win2008 IIS7 server, moved everything across including database. The front end seems to work just fine, but when I login it has to do pull in data based on date ranges and now from no where I am getting this error? The conversion of a varchar data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range value Any ideas why this would do this on the new server and NOT on the old one? No code has changed and the DB is a backup of the one from the old server??

    Hi all. I have the following problem: I'm using L2S for generating entity classes. All these classes share the same property ID which is autonumber. So I figured to put this property to base class and extend all entity classes from the base one. In order to be able to read the value I'm using the override modifier on this property in each and every entity class. Up to now it's live and kicking. Then I decided to introduce another tier - services using WCF approach. I've modified the Serialization mode to Unidirectional (and added the IsReference=true attribute to enable two directions), also added [DataContract] attribute to the BaseObject class. WCF is able to transport the whole object but one property , which is ID. Applying [DataMember] attribute on ID property at the base class resulted in nothing. Am I missing something? Is what I'm trying to achieve possible at all?     a) If a query/subquery doesn’t find any matching rows, then it either returns NULL or no value at all, thus not even a NULL value. Based on what criteria does a query/subquery return a NULL and when doesn’t it return any results, not even a NULL value? b) I assume a scalar subquery will always return NULL, when no matching rows are found? I assume most-outer scalar query also returns NULL if no rows are found? c) SELECT FirstName, LastName, YEAR(BirthDate) FROM Persons WHERE YEAR(BirthDate) IN (SELECT YearReleased FROM Albums); If subquery finds no results, is then a WHERE clause of an outer query translated into WHERE YEAR(BirthDate) IN (null); ? If instead WHERE clause is translated into WHERE YEAR(BirthDate) IN(); then shouldn’t that be an error condition, since how can YEAR(BirthDate) value be compared to nothing? thanx

  • How to use a variable to specify filegroup in MSSQL

    I want to alter a table to add a constraint during upgrade on a MSSQL database. This table is normally indexed on a filegroup called 'MY_INDEX' - but may also be on a database without this filegroup. In this case I want the indexing to be done on the 'PRIMARY' filegroup. I tried the following code to achieve this: DECLARE @fgName AS VARCHAR(10) SET @fgName = CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT groupname FROM sysfilegroups WHERE groupname = 'MY_INDEX') THEN QUOTENAME('MY_INDEX') ELSE QUOTENAME('PRIMARY') END ALTER TABLE [dbo].[mytable] ADD CONSTRAINT [PK_mytable] PRIMARY KEY ( [myGuid] ASC ) ON @fgName -- fails: 'incorrect syntax' However, the last line fails as it appears a filegroup cannot be specified by variable. Is this possible?

  • Odd 'UNION' behavior in an Oracle SQL query

    Here's my query: SELECT my_view.* FROM my_view WHERE my_view.trial in (select 2 as trial_id from dual union select 3 from dual union select 4 from dual) and my_view.location like ('123-%') When I execute this query it returns results which do not conform to the my_view.location like ('123-%') condition. It's as if that condition is being ignored completely. I can even change it to my_view.location IS NULL and it returns the same results, despite that field being not-nullable. I know this query seems ridiculous with the selects from dual, but I've structured it this way to replicate a problem I have when I use a 'WITH' clause (the results of that query are where the selects from dual inline view are). I can modify the query like so and it returns the expected results: SELECT my_view.* FROM my_view WHERE my_view.trial in (2, 3, 4) and my_view.location like ('123-%') Unfortunately I do not know the trial values up front (they are queried for in a 'WITH' clause) so I cannot structure my query this way. What am I doing wrong? I will say that the my_view view is composed of 3 other views whose results are UNION ALL and each of which retrieve some data over a DB Link. Not that I believe that should matter, but in case it does.
