WordPress is the best content management system. It was use to empower self hosted blogs, but now it's extended functionality motivate webmasters to switch their website to WordPress.
We have recently updated our website www.blinds4uk.co.uk with a new homepage containing additional features and more on page content but since then we have lost primary keyword positions and the home page has disappeared completely. The only time it appears is for an exact search ‘blinds4uk’.
Today I took snippets of 'unique content' from the homepage and put this into the 'google search' but our homepage was nowhere to be found. When I did the same in ‘Yahoo’ the homepage came up. Are we missing something?
We ranked in the top 4 for primary kw terms 'blinds uk' & 'uk blinds' but now we don’t show anywhere for these terms. Our homepage has never ranked well for the primary kw 'blinds' yet our internal pages rank very well with many pages on page 1 of google uk. We employed an SEO firm for 9 months to help us establish issues with the homepage but they never could, so we got rid.
We have been trying to get to the root cause of why the homepage ranks so poorly for a number of years and only yesterday we established that we had the meta tag directly below the tag and our title & meta description were further down the page; we have today corrected. Not sure what effect this would have on the way Google reads the homepage but we are trying everything to try and get the homepage ranking fro those primary kw's.
Our current developers & ex SEO guys are all part of the same company and cannot pin-point anything other than saying carryon with their SEO team because it will take time but just comes across as a milking exercise.
Another thing which I have found very strange is the data from our 'traffic audience'. We are a UK based website yet our traffic stats were showing as;- UK 36.6%, Denmark 35.8% and India 27.6%. – don’t make sense to me!
Is there anybody out there that could simply point us in the right direction to the problem(s), so we can fix once and for all?
Could there be anything within the code that is causing the home page not to display within google for our primary kw's terms such as blinds, window blinds etc.
I would appreciate any advice at all that may help us in our quest to sort this homepage issue once and for all

Should I use HTML5 and/or CSS3 to build my website?
I just want to know if it's considered as a "bad practice" to use things like rounded corners, gradients and so on...
I understand that there are bots and crawlers that do not process CSS, but they don't need to. And nowadays most people use browsers that can process CSS3 with no problem.
So should I make my buttons and shadows and such look pretty with CSS3 or with images?
This is first part of the SEO basics series. In the articles of the series I will discuss about basic factors that can have an impact on the ranking of any given website over various search engines.
Assuming no experience with version control systems, just local to live web development. I've been dropped in on a few legacy website projects, and want an easier and more robust way to be able to quickly push and revert changes en masse. I'm currently the only developer on these projects, but more may be added in the future and I think it would be beneficial to set up a system that others can use.

If having installed some packages downloaded from website , I was wondering if it is possible to have auto notification when its update is available, just as those packages in Ubuntu repositories.
Can the packages downloaded be in deb form, or even in source code?
For example,
nevernote maintained in sourceforge,
http://nevernote.sourceforge.net/index.htm,
downloadable from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/nevernote/files/Current/nevernote-0.99_i386.deb/download
packages from Ubuntu PPA

Steve spoke last week (March 4th 2010) on the possibilities of the Cloud and the importance to Microsoft. Of our 40,000 people building software, 70% of the people at Microsoft today are working on the Cloud – 90% in a years time In other words: The video is 85mins of Steve and there is an easy way of navigating to some soundbytes on presspass. I also like the new website that simplifies our story and commitment around the cloud http://www.microsoft.com/cloud/ Which includes an easy mapping between well known product offerings from Microsoft and the Cloud “equivalents”
Web development comprises of all the various activities linked with the purpose of creation of a website. With the technology evolving so fast, the process is gradually getting more and more convenient. But every site, craving for an attractive look, needs a good developer.
I have a website that allows users to display their email address and contact number on their public profile page. These would be in link format, example:
<a href="mailto:user%40email.com" title="email user">[email protected]</a>
<a href="tel:+123456789" title="call user">+123456789</a>
I was wondering if it is necessary at all to add a rel="nofollow" tag to these. Do search engines follow and index these?
I came across a website the other day that was selling backlinks. The site was well designed and promised some results for a nice low price but not too low. After a couple of minutes it started to sound similar to buying email marketing list which I know is not something you do.
I assume that buying backlinks is considered a black-hat SEO trick and should be avoided.
Am I wrong in my assumption?
Hey I'm a coop student that worked at a particular medium size printing company for 8 months. I had a good time it was lax, sometimes insufficiently challenging but none the less I learned a whole lot.
I stuck with them for another 5 months (including this month) at the same rate I was paid then, doing testing work, tool development, taking care of emergencies when the lead developers were away, and other smaller projects and now bigger projects and problem handling (bad printer output etc.). I know their website inside out (ecommerce), and I know their printing software inside out and have made many changes to them both without a hitch. I have also done a lot of refactoring of the existing code base which as far as Im concerned, I believe am the only one to do those sorts of restructuring even though there is constant talk about it. I guess the unit testing paid off and lets me see the value in modularity if even a tad more. Never the less I have faith in my skill and the restructuring I did turned out better than I had imagined .
Now the problem is that I finish school next month and so I asked for a full time spot the month after. They have been expanding and have hired a new guy a few months after my coop spot, and just now they hired a new guy to deal with the CRM application. The lead developer who wrote all of the software had left 5 months ago so it was up to all of us to learn what he had done over 4 years (including db, networking). So now I'm afraid that if I assert myself for a salary similar to the other guys, which I believe I am certainly on par with, that I would be seen as ingrateful.
It's hard to flip a switch and say, hey double my pay, although when I'm working with their bread and butter (printers) and writing new features, refactoring the whole application for extensibility. I love it regardless of pay. I also feel maybe I'm replaceeble, although nobody knows the website better than myself and the lead web dev (not by a long shot), and nobody knows the printer software/drivers better than myself. I just thought they would have brought up a raise earlier on, and now it feels like they don't value my work. I'm also tired of worrying about it. I think my question is, well what do I do next?
We all know that the higher a website ranks in the search engines the more visitors it will receive. We can guarantee a spot on the first page by using a Pay-per-click campaign, but it can also be quite easy to get free positioning on page 1. These 5 tips, if used correctly, will get you on page 1 of the search engines over and over.

Finding keywords or phrases that are relevant to your website is the most crucial part of establishing an online business. Keyword research is similar to gold mining in which out of sands and rocks, you could find gold.

I am a Windows user trying to move over to Ubuntu without much success.
I have installed the 11.10 version as dual boot by using Wubi tool on the Ubuntu website and can only use the operating system for about 5 minutes before it overheats and shuts off the machine.
I have done my searches and seen many posts about overheating but cannot see one that I am able to apply to my particular case.
Can anyone give me a steer on this please?
Article marketing on the World Wide Web is a cost-effective way of getting the word out about your offerings and driving traffic to your website. However, you need to know the tricks of distributing your articles effectively so that your business can get the maximum leverage out of it.
I have a gallery-type website that has about 20k of pages and naturally it uses pagination. However, sometimes /page/2 appears higher in search results than /post/201339 for example.
I'd like to give emphasis to the actual content (posts, videos, whatever the site is about) and not on pages that merely list this content in a paginated matter.
What is the best way to avoid this issue? Maybe a NOINDEX,FOLLOW meta tag on the paginated pages?
