I have a ubuntu machine that is connected to my house's sound system. Is there a way I can control what it is playing remotely? I have SSH access if necessary.
I typically use Rhythmbox to play music.
I'd like to disable the 3rd button emulation in ubuntu 9.10. Normally, I'd just change the option in xorg.conf and it would go away - but how do I deal with an autodetected mouse?
For example, I've got a mouse I connect to USB and it has the emulation enabled by default. How do I change it in that case?
I just downloaded a Windows 7 iso from MSDNAA at school and they gave me a personal key. I'd like to add a file with my key onto the disc, but it has to remain bootable.
Is there a really simple way to do this, or one that doesn't require some shareware?
I'm using XP right now, or any solution under ubuntu is fine.
I created a partition in my hard disk for my data (documents, multimedia, etc.).
How can I:
Move the /home/ directory to the new partition
Make the OS (Ubuntu Linux) treat that directory as the default /home/.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my laptop. First I installed it inside Windows and when it boots for first time I got the error message "couldn't find root filesystem , try partition table to fix the problem " . When I want to install it on a single partition (normally) and when it told me to chose a partition I don't find any partition (entire disk) .
I have 2 primary partitions and 3 logical partitions. How can I proceed with the install ?
I'm trying to recover some data using testdisk and running ubuntu from a live cd.
When i choose the undelete option i get the following message and it takes me out of testdisk:
file undeleteAborded (core dumped)
do you know why? can you give me some advices, tips about what to do?
I have a serious bad situation: I have an Excel file that is password protected and I need to access the information asap for a deadline for a project. Are there any good Excel password recovery tools available for Ubuntu that I could use to achieve this task?
Whenever I complete something in the command line while using Ubuntu and my computer does something of value to me, I enjoy saying thank you, just because it's the polite thing to do. A typical conversation might look something like this:
mtp-sendfile HamishAndyPodcast.mp3 /Music/podcasts
Sending file...
Progress: 17769768 of 17769768 (100%)
New file ID: 76098

What's the best way to teach my PC a few manners and respond with something like "No problemo".
Hi all,
I just installed a Kingston 64 GB SSD into my laptop, replacing the old 80 GB 5400 RPM one. The drive starts up and works fine every other time. For example, if I'm running normally, and press "Restart", I get:
2100 Initialization error on HDD0.
I turn off the computer manually, restart, and...it boots into Ubuntu again. This happens every other time without fail...anyone know what the problem could be?
I have Windows 7 installed on a partition and running fine, but I want to access them from my Ubuntu installation with VirtualBox. I have created the virtual disk file and everything, but Windows bluescreens after a bit of loading with error 0000007B (it can't find the disk or something).
Has anyone managed to solve this problem?
I can connect to other computers on my home network (ubuntu + OSX machines) using the IP address, but I can't connect using the netbios name.
On the mac the name appears in Finder but if I try to connect (goconnect to server smb://[email protected]) it doesn't work, while smb://[email protected] does. Same with ssh, ping and afp between the macs.
This is a intermittent problem. It has worked in the past.
Recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4 on my NC10 and now I can't seem to access/unlock the top panel and add/delete programs. Right click doesn't bring up the options to let me change things.
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance
Richard
I want to record a keyboard/mouse macro for automatically playing repetitive flash games. The programs I'm familiar with xnee/gnee/pnee and xmacro don't work under Ubuntu 10.04.
(Xnee gives "Xnee failed due to bad data received from RECORD extension" for version 3.02, which is a known issue which I haven't found a solution for, and xmacro just plain doesn't work...)
Are there any other methods I could use besides these two programs?
Thanks
Hello,
I am using:
ubuntu 10.4
2.6.32-21-generic
Evolution 2.83.3
I have noticed that when I get a new email, it never shows a new mail icon in the panel. I had the same problem with 9.10, and I thought the problem would go away when I upgraded to 10.4.
I have checked the properties in Mail preferences:
Play sound - yes
Display a notification - yes
Indicate new messages in panel - yes
Many thanks for any suggestions,
I have a computer, running ubuntu, that I want to be connected to the network at all times. It has a GSM modem connected to it via USB.
Is there some program available that monitors that the networking is working (by pinging some site(s)), and if not tries to fix the error by reseting the modem, reloading the USB drivers and perhaps by dropping the USB port's current (if possible) to force the modem to reset ?
I want to add the bthprops.cpl dll (The bluetooth control panel applet) to my wine install
under Ubuntu 10.04 since it is required for Dolphin Emulator. http://www.dolphin-emulator.com/
I copied the file from my windows install into the System32 folder in .wine and into the
folder where the application I am trying to run is, but wine still fails to load it. Is
there anything else I need to do to make the dll accessible for wine programs?
(Please don't suggest the native linux Version of Dolphin as a fix - it is not working
for me)
I try to install a small audio player named "Audacious" with the following command:
sudo apt-get install audacious
and it tells me that it depends audacious-plugins,
so I try to install the audacious-plugins,
one thing leads to another, there're numerous depends and it is just impossible to install all of them manually...
Is it even possible to install a software on ubuntu linux?
Is there a way to auto install all the depends?
(I have never seen such a stupid software manager.)
Many thanks.

I ran some X applications using ssh -Y my_address and now it asks me to unlock my RSA key every time I use it. I used to only have to unlock it once a day. What's going on?
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04.
Currently I'm using Tomboy to write notes, including a TODO list. I'm looking a real task application to hold my TODO list.
In gnome, there are tasque and tasks, but both need evolution-data-server. Is there any other task application that not have evolution prerequisite?
I'm using Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10
TIA
I am using mobile dial up on ubuntu.
However, SOMETIMES even though I am connected to the ISP, I do not have any entries in /etc/resolv.conf. I often restart network-manager or networking hoping it will change but normally it doesn't do any good. and by connected I mean I can see that the network notification icon has switched to a few bars indicating connectivity).
Anyone know a good solution around this?
Hello,
I am using Ubuntu and have AMP. I tried to create a new folder under /var/www/html/ it says not found. I edited the http://localhost/index.html and that gives me a 404 error. I guess its something to do with the security.
localhost/index.html was OK before the edit
Appreciate all assistance.
Thanks
Jean
I am constantly troubled by various gnome and linux shortcuts propagating through while I'm in remote desktop on ubuntu.
Some of it I know I can disable in gnome control panel, but I'm also troubled by the stuff like Ctrl-Alt-F keys (which I do not thinks is gnome)
Is there any way to disable all of these shortcuts, preferably only while the application has focus/is running?
I have to SSH to a computer on my network and stay connected. However, my network shuts down from midnight to 7:00 am everyday. What i want is that I be able to auto-reconnect to the computer once the network comes back at 7:00 am. Cron solutions are no good. I am using Ubuntu 10.04.
I want to change OpenJDK to SunJava in my ubuntu linux desktop , i have downloaded the "jdk-7.tar.gz" from sun's website, but there problem is how to make the system to use the newly downloaded java ? I tried adding the new jdk/bin/java to my PATH ( from .bashrc ) but that seem not to work (cause probably OpenJDK's path is inside my PATH variable as well , so the system checks that first)
Here's my JDK7 : /usr/lib/jdk7/bin/java
Here's what $(which java) outputs : /usr/bin/java
Thanks in advance
