  • C# networking app - should I use sockets or something else? [closed]

    - by Harun
I am developing a network based application. I need to retrieve data through internet. The scenario is like this - a client machine will send data through internet to the server machine and data size will be big enough. So should i use simple TCP/IP socket concept or else? Because i never did a socket program which will retrieve data through internet..... Any suggestion will be very helpful....... Thanks.

  • How can I obtain the IP address of my server program?

    - by Dr Dork
Hello! This question is related to another question I just posted. I'm prepping for a simple work project and am trying to familiarize myself with the basics of socket programming in a Unix dev environment. At this point, I have some basic server side code and client side code setup to communicate. Currently, my client code successfully connects to the server code and the server code sends it a test message, then both quit out. Perfect! That's exactly what I wanted to accomplish. Now I'm playing around with the functions used to obtain info about the two environments (server and client). I'd like to obtain my server program's IP address. Here's the code I currently have to do this, but it's not working... int sockfd; unsigned int len; socklen_t sin_size; char msg[]="test message"; char buf[MAXLEN]; int st, rv; struct addrinfo hints, *serverinfo, *p; struct sockaddr_storage client; char s[INET6_ADDRSTRLEN]; char ip[INET6_ADDRSTRLEN]; //zero struct memset(&hints,0,sizeof(hints)); hints.ai_family = AF_UNSPEC; hints.ai_socktype = SOCK_STREAM; hints.ai_flags = AI_PASSIVE; //get the server info if((rv = getaddrinfo(NULL, SERVERPORT, &hints, &serverinfo ) != 0)){ perror("getaddrinfo"); exit(-1); } // loop through all the results and bind to the first we can for( p = serverinfo; p != NULL; p = p->ai_next) { //Setup the socket if( (sockfd = socket( p->ai_family, p->ai_socktype, p->ai_protocol )) == -1 ) { perror("socket"); continue; } //Associate a socket id with an address to which other processes can connect if(bind(sockfd, p->ai_addr, p->ai_addrlen) == -1){ close(sockfd); perror("bind"); continue; } break; } if( p == NULL ){ perror("Fail to bind"); } inet_ntop(p->ai_family, get_in_addr((struct sockaddr *)p->ai_addr), s, sizeof(s)); printf("Server has TCP Port %s and IP Address %s\n", SERVERPORT, s); and the output for the IP is always empty... server has TCP Port 21412 and IP Address :: any ideas for what I'm missing? thanks in advance for your help! this stuff is really complicated at first.

  • IP to MAC adress translation

    - by b-gen-jack-o-neill
Hi, please, tell me one thing I can´t understand. On PC networks which uses TCP/IP protocol set, why is ip adress further translated into MAC adress? I mean, when every device knows its IP, why furher use MAC and not to use IP number as adress directly?

  • Alternatives to "Raining Sockets"

    - by sanity
I need to build a Java app with considerable IO requirements, supporting tens of thousands of concurrent TCP connections. I found a library called Raining Sockets which seems intended to make it easier to use Java's asynchronous NIO package, but the last update was 6 years ago. Are there other libraries, that are preferably still under active development, and with a public maven repository, that I should look at?

  • From a Java programming perspective, what difference does multicast make to a networking program?

    - by pnut butter
My manager has asked me to assess what changes would be required to add multicast support to a socket-based TCP/IP networking program that is part of a trading system. As far as I can tell, from the perspective of a Java program, it doesn't seem to matter too much whether the program is unicast or multicast. Doesn't the Java networking API make all of this transparent? By this I mean, wouldn't the change be a simple one of simply adding additional destinations for the outgoing connections?

  • See socket options on existing sockets created by other apps?

    - by nailer
I'd like to test whether particular socket options have been set on an existing socket. Ie, pretty much everything you can see in: #!/usr/bin/env python '''See possible TCP socket options''' import socket sockettypelist = [x for x in dir(socket) if x.startswith('SO_')] sockettypelist.sort() for sockettype in sockettypelist: print sockettype Anyone know how I can see the options on existing sockets, ie those created by other processes? Alas nearly all the documentation I read on Python socket programming is about making new sockets.

  • Linux: Can Recvmsg be used to receive the IP_TOS of every incoming packet

    - by Mayutan
Can one use recvmsg() to obtain the IP_TOS field of every incoming packet or does it just show the IP_TOS value that is set for the particular socket. If not, does anyone know of a solution to obtain the IP_TOS values of every incoming packets. I am using a UDP application and therefore do not get to view the IP_TOS field at the application layer as is the case with TCP. Thanks.

  • Git on Windows 7 expecting Linux? /dev/null not found error

    - by Klikini
I have installed git (not GitHub) on Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, and I cannot get it to work. Opening Git Bash outputs the following: Welcome to Git (version 1.9.4-preview20140815) Run 'git help git' to display the help index. Run 'get help <command>' to display help for specific commands. sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory Andy@ANDY-DELL ~ $ If I open the Git GUI, I get a this box: Title: git-gui: fatal error Content: fatal: open /dev/null or dup failed: No such file or directory Git Gui requires Git 1.5.0 or later. I also tried GitHub for Windows, but I got an internet connection error when attempting to clone a repo, even though my connection is fine. Is this possibly related? I have learned so far that /dev/null is the Linux version of the Windows NUL, but why is it trying to do this on Windows? Thanks in advance.

  • Teamcity build agent gives 504 gateway timeout

    - by Anthony
I have a new teamcity build agent machine, which when started up tries to connect to the build server and fails. It never shows up in the connected, disconnected or unauthorised agents tabs of the build server web interface. The logs on the build agent show that it fails to connect with a 504 gateway timeout. This is from teamcity-agent.log [2012-09-04 15:34:59,776] INFO - buildServer.AGENT.registration - Registering on server http://10.0.10.16, AgentDetails{Name='my-local', AgentId=null, BuildId=null, AgentOwnAddress='10.0.1.14', AlternativeAddresses=[10.0.10.32], Port=8080, Version='21424', PluginsVersion='21424-md5-somechecksum', AvailableRunners=[ABunchOfPlugins], AvailableVcs=[SomeRunners], AuthorizationToken='sometoken'} [2012-09-04 15:35:53,606] WARN - buildServer.AGENT.registration - Call http://10.0.10.16/RPC2 buildServer.registerAgent3: org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcClientException: Server returned incorrect status code: 504 Gateway Time-out [2012-09-04 15:35:53,606] WARN - buildServer.AGENT.registration - Connection to TeamCity server is probably lost. Will be trying to restore it. Take a look at logs/teamcity-agent.log for details (unless you're using custom logging). (I have edited some identifying data out of this log excerpt) But I can reach the build server. In fact, tracert shows that it is very nearby. Tracing route to TEAMCITYSERVER [10.0.10.16] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 10.0.2.1 2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms TEAMCITYSERVER [10.0.10.16] Trace complete. I can see a teamcity login page if I hit http://10.0.10.16 in the browser. The teamcity service is logging in as the same (local administrator) account as I used to log in and test the network. The build agent is a windows 2008 server VM hosted on Ubuntu 12.04 under Oracle VirtualBox. I have disabled firewalls on both the Windows and Ubuntu machines. Other VMS with similar configuration can connect fine and do not report this error. What can possibly be preventing this connection?

  • TortoiseSVN hangs in Windows Server 2012 Azure VM

    - by ZaijiaN
Following @shanselman's article on remoting into an Azure VM for development, I spun up my own VS 2013 VM, and that image runs on WS 2012. Once I was able to remote in, I started installing all my dev tools, including Tortoise SVN 1.8.3 64bit. Things went south once I started attempting to check out code from my personal svn server. It would hang and freeze often, although sometimes it would work - I was able to partially check out projects, but I would get frequent connection time out errors. My personal svn server (VisualSVN 2.7.2) runs at home on a windows 7 machine, and I have a dyndns url pointing to it. I have also configured my router to passthrough all 443 traffic to the appropriate port on the server. I self-signed a cert and made sure it was imported into the VM cert store under trusted root authorities. I have no problems connecting to my svn server from 4-5 other computers & locations. From the Azure VM, in both IE and Chrome, I can access the repository web browser with no issues. There are no outbound firewall restrictions. I have installed other SVN add-ons for Visual Studio (AnkhSVN, VisualSVN) and attempted to connect with my svn server, with largely the same results - random and persistent connection issues (hangs/timeouts). I spun up a completely fresh WS 2008 Azure VM, and installed TortoiseSVN, and had the same results. So I'm at a loss as to what the problem is and how to fix it. Web searches on tortoisesvn and windows server issues doesn't yield any current or relevant information. At this point, i'm guessing that maybe some setting or configuration that MS Azure VM images is the culprit - although I should probably attempt to spin up my own local WS VM to rule out that it's a window server issue. Any thoughts? I hope I'm just missing something really obvious!

  • Configuring VirtualBox host only networking: OSX host, Ubuntu guest

    - by Greg K
I have a Ubuntu guest configured with two interfaces, eth0 is using NAT and works fine, I can access the net. The second interface eth1 is set to host only networking and VirtualBox has created a vboxnet0 virtual adapter on the host. I've configured vboxnet0 in VirtualBox adapter settings with the following: ip 192.168.21.20 subnet 255.255.255.0 Once the VM guest is running, ifconfig on OSX has vboxnet0 setup as: vboxnet0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 ether 0a:00:27:00:00:00 inet 192.168.21.20 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.21.255 In the guest, eth0 is set to use DHCP, I've statically assigned eth1 to 192.168.21.20 (is this a mistake?): auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.21.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.21.0 broadcast 192.168.21.255 gateway 192.168.21.1 There is no device on 192.168.21.1 - what should I set my gateway to?
