  • The 5 stages reviewing bad TSQL

    - by Mike Femenella
I'm working with an app team that is light on TSQL expertise this week and couldn't help but draw a parallel to the 5 stages of grieving. Denial: There’s nothing wrong with the code SQL Server has a bug in it. There is a network problem. Anger: You’re doing what in your code?! Why on earth are you doing that? That’s crazy. Bargaining: Fine you can keep your cursor but let’s speed things up a bit. Depression: Ugh, this is so horrible I’m never going to be able to fix all of it. Acceptance: Ok, we’re screwed and we know we’re screwed. This is going to hurt…

  • Java Sql Udate error, data type missmatch

    - by codo
    I have created a table in ms access. I have set the data type of ID to Auto Number in MS-access. In java when I try to update a record. the netBeans IDE gives me the error of " data type missmatch in criteria expression". But when I changed the ID number that was not in the table already it works well. The code is below. String sql = "Update table1 set price ='" + txtPrice.getText() + "', quantity='" + txtQuantity.getText() + "', description='" + txtDescription.getText() + "' where id= " + txtid.getText() + ""; try { pst = conn.prepareStatement(sql); pst.executeUpdate(); JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Updated"); UpdateJTable(); } catch (Exception e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, e); }

  • How to organise a many to many relationship in MongoDB

    - by Gareth Elms
I have two tables/collections; Users and Groups. A user can be a member of any number of groups and a user can also be an owner of any number of groups. In a relational database I'd probably have a third table called UserGroups with a UserID column, a GroupID column and an IsOwner column. I'm using MongoDB and I'm sure there is a different approach for this kind of relationship in a document database. Should I embed the list of groups and groups-as-owner inside the Users table as two arrays of ObjectIDs? Should I also store the list of members and owners in the Groups table as two arrays, effectively mirroring the relationship causing a duplication of relationship information? Or is a bridging UserGroups table a legitimate concept in document databases for many to many relationships? Thanks

  • SQL - suppressing duplicate *adjacent* records

    - by Trevel
I need to run a Select statement (DB2 SQL) that does not pull adjacent row duplicates based on a certain field. In specific, I am trying to find out when data changes, which is made difficult because it might change back to its original value. That is to say, I have a table that vaguely resembles: A, 5, Jan A, 12, Feb A, 12, Mar A, 12, Apr A, 9, May A, 9, Jun A, 5, Jul And I want to get the results: A, 5, Jan A, 12, Feb A, 9, May A, 5, Jul discarding adjacent duplicates but keeping the last row. The obvious: Select Letter, Number, Min(Month) from Table group by Letter, Number does not work -- it doesn't include the last row.

  • SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 is available - this time for sure!

    - by AaronBertrand
Last week I mentioned in passing that Service Pack 1 is now available, while I was blogging from the PASS Summit keynote . I wanted to put up an official post instead of having it appear as a footnote there (I also updated my April Fools' joke to point to the right place). Service Pack 1 Details Service Pack 1 is build # 11.0.3000 and includes 13 fixes to public KB items and 35 other internal (VSTS) items. You can see the list of fixes in KB #2674319 . You can also read about new features included...(read more)

  • What is the fastest method to calculate substring

    - by Misha Moroshko
I have a huge "binary" string, like: 1110 0010 1000 1111 0000 1100 1010 0111.... It's length is 0 modulo 4, and may reach 500,000. I have also a corresponding array: {14, 2, 8, 15, 0, 12, 10, 7, ...} (every number in the array corresponds to 4 bits in the string) Given this string, this array, and a number N, I need to calculate the following substring string.substr(4*N, 4), i.e.: for N=0 the result should be 1110 for N=1 the result should be 0010 I need to perform this task many many times, and my question is what would be the fastest method to calculate this substring ? One method is to calculate the substring straight forward: string.substr(4*N, 4). I'm afraid this one is not efficient for such huge strings. Another method is to use array[N].toString(2) and then wrap the result with zeros if needed. I'm not sure how fast is this. May be you have any other ideas ?

  • Find all those columns which have only null values, in a MySQL table

    - by Robin v. G.
The situation is as follows: I have a substantial number of tables, with each a substantial number of columns. I need to deal with this old and to-be-deprecated database for a new system, and I'm looking for a way to eliminate all columns that have - apparently - never been in use. I wanna do this by filtering out all columns that have a value on any given row, leaving me with a set of columns where the value is NULL in all rows. Of course I could manually sort every column descending, but that'd take too long as I'm dealing with loads of tables and columns. I estimate it to be 400 tables with up to 50 (!) columns per table. Is there any way I can get this information from the information_schema? EDIT: Here's an example: column_a column_b column_c column_d NULL NULL NULL 1 NULL 1 NULL 1 NULL 1 NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL NULL The output should be 'column_a' and 'column_c', for being the only columns without any filled in values.

  • Recent EC Meetings - RIM forfeits EC seat

    - by heathervc
Materials and minutes from the JCP EC Face-to-Face Meeting, held September 2012 in Prague, are now available on the EC Meeting Summaries page.  Topics included JCP.Next, a JCP 2.8 progress report, Inactive JSRs, and two Spec Lead presentations. In October 2011, new EC Standing Rules went into effect. The Rules include the following: "Missing five meetings in a row, or missing more than two-thirds of all meetings in any consecutive twelve-month period, results in loss of EC membership."  Last week, the JCP EC met for their October EC teleconference meeting.  RIM missed this meeting, and has now missed five meetings in a row (see the attendance chart); therefore, RIM has forfeited their EC membership. Results from the 2012 EC Elections will be available on 30 October.  The new merged EC will go into effect on 12 November.

  • SSD harddisks & programming

    - by Carra
SSD harddisks have been on the rise lately. And I've been wondering if it's worth buying one as a programmer. Being able to save five minutes when starting my PC is fun but won't convince my boss. How does it impact a typical visual studio project containing hundreds of files? Compile times, accessing files, waiting for visual studio to do its thing... Are there any benchmarks that checked this? And ideally, how much time would one win each week by upgrading?

  • Scratchable Ticket kind Custom View Item in Android ?

    - by Andhravaala
Hi All, I need to develop a Instant Lottery game app. I need an idea/procedure to implement Scratchable custom widget similar to instant Lottery Tickets in Android. The requirement is like, the actual content(secret number) should be covered by some image(which indicates scratch area). When the user touch and scratch the image, the image has to disappear slowly and the background content(secret number) should appear accordingly. Please let me know the best way to implement this. I am in real need of it. Thanks in advance.

  • PASS Summit 2013, a Hit in Charlotte! (and an apology)

    - by andyleonard
I had a great time at the PASS Summit 2013 this past week in Charlotte! I spoke to several people who told me they were pleasantly surprised by the venue and the event. Charlotte rocks! As a NASCAR fan, I particularly enjoyed the Community Event held at the NASCAR Hall of Fame . It is always an honor to present and I was honored to deliver Designing an SSIS Framework and to participate in a cool panel discussion titled How to Avoid Living at Work: Lessons from Working at Home . • 12.04: I need a new network card - and I think this one may work?

    - by Jason Malone
I found this list of compatible USB wireless network adaptors: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-usb-wireless-compatibility-adapter-list.html Listed here is the Belkin F5D8053. I'm looking for a store to buy a suitable adaptor in locally and I can't find that particular adaptor - but I can see a Belkin F7D4101az. I think this is simply a newer model - but a Google search for "ubuntu belkin f7d4101az" brings no results - not even people trying to get it to work. Nothing. So I didn't want to purchase it without being sure. There's really only one PC shop that sells this sort of stuff around here - so here's a list of all my available options: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/wireless-cards-adapters/xx_7088_70095_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html I'd really like to get one today, because I have a lot of work to do and don't really want to have to wait a week for a new adaptor - I spent 6 or 7 hours last night trying to get my Dell 1450 to work with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • CSS Selector Issue

    - by YsoL8
Hello html body .home blog logged-in div #wrapper div #page div .cats I have a problem with selecting unordered lists (i.e ul li.class-name class-name-number) at the above dom location in CSS. I am working with a wordpress theme. Basically could I have suggestions for the correct selector to use in order to influence this tag? I can provide a simplified html structure if it will help. I've tried a number of selectors along the lines of: (sometimes)#page (# or .)cats (sometimes)ul li(sometimes with class name) EDIT: I've tried the selectors suggested in the wordpress docs. Thanks!

  • Force Decimal Regex

    - by babyangel86
Hi, I'm looking for a regex or a way to format the NumberValidator so that only decimal places are allowed. The domain="real" allows you to put integer values, but I need to force the user to but in 2.0 if they want an integer. This is because they pass through a Castor mapping file, it complains if it gets an integer when it expects a decimal. I dont want to restrict the number of decimal places, just insist that there must be a point, and a number after it. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Screencast: "Unlocking the Java EE Platform with HTML5"

    - by Geertjan
The Java EE platform aims to increase your productivity and reduce the amount of scaffolding code needed in Java enterprise applications. It encompasses a range of specifications, such as JPA, EJB, JSF, and JAX-RS. How do these specifications fit together in an application, and how do they relate to each other? And how can HTML5 be used to leverage Java EE? In this recording of a session I did last week at Oredev in Malmo, Sweden, you learn how Java EE works and how it can be integrated with HTML5 front ends, via HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

  • How to close all, or only some, tabs in Safari using AppleScript?

    - by Form
I have made a very simple AppleScript to close all tabs in Safari. The problem is, it works, but not completely. The problem is that only a couple of tabs are closed. Here's the code: tell application "Safari" repeat with aWindow in windows repeat with aTab in tabs of aWindow if [some condition is encountered] then aTab close end if end repeat end repeat end tell I've also tried this script: tell application "Safari" repeat with i from 0 to the number of items in windows set aWindow to item i of windows repeat with j from 0 to the number of tabs in aWindow set aTab to item j of tabs of aWindow if [some condition is encountered] then aTab close end if end repeat end repeat end tell ... but it does not work either (same behavior). I tried that on my system (MacBook Pro jan 2008), as well as on a Mac Pro G5 under Tiger and the script fails on both, albeit with a much less descriptive error on Tiger. Running the script a few times closes a few tab each time until none is left, but always fails with the same error after closing a few tabs. Under Leopard I get an out of bounds error. Since I am using fast enumeration (not using "repeat from 0 to number of items in windows") I don't see how I can get an out of bounds error with this... My goal is to use the Cocoa Scripting Bridge to close tabs in Safari from my Objective-C Cocoa application but the Scripting Bridge fails in the same manner. The non-deletable tabs show as NULL in the Xcode debugger, while the other tabs are valid objects from which I can get values back (such as their title). In fact I tried with the Scripting Bridge first then told myself why not try this directly in AppleScript and I was surprised to see the same results. I must have a glaring omission or something in there... (seems like a bug in Safari AppleScript support to me... :S) I've used repeat loops and Obj-C 2.0 fast enumeration to iterate through collections before with zero problems, so I really don't see what's wrong here. Anyone can help? Thanks in advance!

  • Castle Windsor Weak Typed Factory

    - by JeffN825
In a very very limited number of scenarios, I need to go from an unknown Type (at compile time) to an instance of the object registered for that type. For the most part, I use typed factories and I know the type I want to resolve at compile time...so I inject a Func<IMyType> into a constructor ...but in these limited number of scenarios, in order to avoid a direct call to the container (and thus having to reference Windsor from the library, which is an anti-pattern I'd like to avoid), I need to inject a Func<Type,object>...which I want to internally container.Resolve(type) for the Type parameter of the Func. Does anyone have some suggestions on the easiest/most straightforward way of setting this up? I tried the following, but with this setup, I end up bypassing the regular TypedFactoryFacility altogether which is definitely not what I want: Kernel.Register(Component.For(typeof (Func<Type, object>)).LifeStyle.Singleton.UsingFactoryMethod( (kernel, componentModel, creationContext) => kernel.Resolve(/* not sure what to put here... */))); Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Here's a slide show that's paraphrasing Cameron Purdy's presentation on how Java technology has and hasn't supplanted C++. See: Why Java Has/Hasn't Won vs. C++ Here's a quote: This eWEEK slide show borrows from Purdy’s arguments and looks at 10 reasons Java was able to supplant C++, as well as five reasons or areas it was not. It's like Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Can there really be a clear winner? Well, stick around and watch Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II on tomorrow's The 4:30 movie as Monster Week continues on WABC, and find out... Hinkmond

  • ActionScript display zero value

    - by bwong
It seems the number Datatype handles zeros and nulls the same. I need to display a zero value on the screen, but AS displays nothing. When it's saved, the value is saved as a zero, and therefore shows up zero on the screen. Is there a way to display the zero value using a new object? public class myObject{ private var numVar:Number } My AS file: var temp:MyObject temp.numVar = 0; When I debug, temp.numVar contains a value of 0, but does not show anything on the UI. If this object is then saved to the DB, and then displayed to the UI, it shows a 0. My question is - how do I get temp.numVar to display 0 before persistenting it to the DB?

  • How to calculate median of a Map<Int,Int>?

    - by Chris
For a map where the key represents a number of a sequence and the value the count how often this number appeared in the squence, how would an implementation of an algorithm in java look like to calculate the median? For example: 1,1,2,2,2,2,3,3,3,4,5,6,6,6,7,7 in a map: Map<Int,Int> map = ... map.put(1,2) map.put(2,4) map.put(3,3) map.put(4,1) map.put(5,1) map.put(6,3) map.put(7,2) double median = calculateMedian(map); print(median); would result in: > print(median); 3 > So what i am looking for is a java implementation of calculateMedian.

  • Overloading Console.ReadLine possible? (or any static class method)

    - by comecme
I'm trying to create an overload of the System.Console.ReadLine() method that will take a string argument. My intention basically is to be able to write string s = Console.ReadLine("Please enter a number: "); in stead of Console.Write("Please enter a number: "); string s = Console.ReadLine(); I don't think it is possible to overload Console.ReadLine itself, so I tried implementing an inherited class, like this: public static class MyConsole : System.Console { public static string ReadLine(string s) { Write(s); return ReadLine(); } } That doesn't work though, cause it is not possible to inherit from System.Console (because it is a static class which automatically makes is a sealed class). Does it make sense what I'm trying to do here? Or is it never a good idea to want to overload something from a static class?
