  • Has a multi player graphic adventure* ever been made?

    - by Petruza
By graphic adventure, I mean point & click LucasArts-type games. Those games have a mostly linear structure in nature, and usually don't offer as many variants as other games types like action, rpg, strategy, which makes this genre difficult to implement a multi-player feature. I'd like to know if there has been any attempts on doing such a thing, and if it would be viable, as players going offline or leaving a game in the middle would affect significantly the other players' game.

  • CPU temperature higher under Ubuntu 12.10 than under Windows 7

    - by user110019
The CPU temperature under Ubuntu 12.10 is significantly higher than under Windows 7 doing similar tasks. For example, the CPU temperature under Windows when watching flash videos is around 50-60 degrees, under Ubuntu it is between 65-75. In idle mode in Ubuntu it is usually around 50. I use an i3 core and an integrated graphics. Is there a way to lower the temperature? And I don't mean via Jupiter as this doesn't work for watching videos..

  • How to connect to database on remote server

    - by user137263
Where there is VPN to remote server and then access to the database via local network interface, how can one establish a remote link between one's computer (with a programme such as Visual Studio 2010) and SQL Server (e.g. 2008 R2) ? Any attempts to create a direct link to the SQL Server are blocked. Whilst the SQL Server can be configured to allow external access, this provides its own host of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • 403 Forbidden for /home/my-username/Dropbox/Hemsidor as directory root

    - by Erik Edgren
I'm trying setup Apache to point the directory root to /home/my-username/Dropbox/Hemsidor but when I go to localhost I got 403 Forbidden. I don't have any .htaccess file in the home directory (Hemsidor) so I don't know what the problem is. I have tested to add Options +FollowSymLinks -SymLinksIfOwnerMatch in my httpd.conf file and then restarted Apache but with no luck. What's wrong? Thanks in advance.

  • T-SQL Tuesday #19: Blind Spots

    - by merrillaldrich
A while ago I wrote a post, Visualize Disaster , prompted by a real incident we had at my office. Fortunately we came through it OK from a business point of view, but I took away an important lesson: it’s very easy, whether your organization and your team is savvy about disaster recovery or not, to have significant blind spots with regard to recovery in the face of some large, unexpected outage. We have very clear direction and decent budgets to work with, and the safety and recoverability of applications...(read more)

  • non randomic enemy movement implementation

    - by user601836
I would like to implement enemy movement on a X-Y grid. Would it be a good idea to have a predefined table with an initial X-Y position and a predefined "surveillance path"? Each enemy will follow its path until it detects a player, at this point it will start chasing it using a chasing algorithm. According to a friend of mine this implementation is good because the design of a good path will provide to the user a sort of reality sensation.

  • Crash when using Cocos2d

    - by ipodfreak0313
    Sorry about the poor question title, it's just that this seems to big for a title. So here's the dirt: I am making a game (obviously) and I want the enemies to shoot (not necessarily at the player). I want the shoot method to be in the Enemies file, so as not to clutter up my HelloWorldLayer.m file even more. Here's what I'm using right now: HelloWorldLayer.m -(void)addEnemy:(BigAndStrongEnemy *)enemy { enemy = nil; if((arc4random() % 4) == 3) { enemy = [BigAndStrongEnemy enemy]; } else { enemy = [SmallAndFastEnemy enemy]; } if(buffDude.position.y > character.position.y || buffDude.position.y < (character.position.y + 10)) { } int rand = arc4random() % 320; if((arc4random() % 2 == 1)) { [enemy setPosition:ccp(0,rand)]; }else{ [enemy setPosition:ccp(480,rand)]; } [self animateEnemy:enemy]; [self addChild:enemy]; } -(void)animateEnemy:(BigAndStrongEnemy *)enemy2 { float randX = arc4random() % 480; float randY = arc4random() % 320; int rand = arc4random() % 320; CGPoint moveToPoint = CGPointMake(randX, (randY - rand)); [enemies addObject:enemy2]; action = [CCSequence actions: [CCMoveBy actionWithDuration:1 position:ccpMult(ccpNormalize(ccpSub(moveToPoint, enemy2.position)), 75)], [CCMoveBy actionWithDuration:3 position:ccp(buffDude.position.x,buffDude.position.y)], nil]; CCCallFuncO *a = [CCCallFuncO actionWithTarget:self selector:(@selector(shoot:)) object:enemy2]; CCSequence *s = [CCSequence actions:action,a, nil]; CCRepeatForever *repeat = [CCRepeatForever actionWithAction:s]; [enemy2 runAction:repeat]; } And here's the Shoot info from the Enemies class: Enemies.m: -(void)shoot:(id)sender { self = (BigAndStrongEnemy *)sender; [self shoot]; } -(void)spriteMoveFinished:(id)sender { CCSprite *b = (CCSprite *)sender; [self removeChild:b cleanup:YES]; } -(void)shoot { self = [CCSprite spriteWithFile:@"bigAndStrongEnemy.gif"]; CCSprite *b = [CCSprite spriteWithFile:@"bullet.gif"]; b.position = ccp(self.position.x,self.position.y); b.tag = 2; [self addChild:b]; [bullets addObject:b]; CGSize winSize = [[CCDirector sharedDirector] winSize]; CGPoint point = CGPointMake((winSize.width - (winSize.width - self.position.x)),0); [b runAction:[CCSequence actions: [CCMoveBy actionWithDuration:0.5 position:point], [CCCallFuncN actionWithTarget:self selector:@selector(spriteMoveFinished:)], nil]]; } Every time the 3 seconds goes by, the app crashes, and goes to the breakpoint in the CCCallFuncO file. I haven't touched it, is the thing. I am completely confused. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Learning by doing (and programming by trial and error)

    - by AlexBottoni
How do you learn a new platform/toolkit while producing working code and keeping your codebase clean? When I know what I can do with the underlying platform and toolkit, I usually do this: I create a new branch (with GIT, in my case) I write a few unit tests (with JUnit, for example) I write my code until it passes my tests So far, so good. The problem is that very often I do not know what I can do with the toolkit because it is brand new to me. I work as a consulant so I cannot have my preferred language/platform/toolkit. I have to cope with whatever the customer uses for the task at hand. Most often, I have to deal (often in a hurry) with a large toolkit that I know very little so I'm forced to "learn by doing" (actually, programming by "trial and error") and this makes me anxious. Please note that, at some point in the learning process, usually I already have: read one or more five-stars books followed one or more web tutorials (writing working code a line at a time) created a couple of small experimental projects with my IDE (IntelliJ IDEA, at the moment. I use Eclipse, Netbeans and others, as well.) Despite all my efforts, at this point usually I can just have a coarse understanding of the platform/toolkit I have to use. I cannot yet grasp each and every detail. This means that each and every new feature that involves some data preparation and some non-trivial algorithm is a pain to implement and requires a lot of trial-and-error. Unfortunately, working by trial-and-error is neither safe nor easy. Actually, this is the phase that makes me most anxious: experimenting with a new toolkit while producing working code and keeping my codebase clean. Usually, at this stage I cannot use the Eclipse Scrapbook because the code I have to write is already too large and complex for this small tool. In the same way, I cannot use any more an indipendent small project for my experiments because I need to try the new code in place. I can just write my code in place and rely on GIT for a safe bail-out. This makes me anxious because this kind of intertwined, half-ripe code can rapidly become incredibly hard to manage. How do you face this phase of the development process? How do you learn-by-doing without making a mess of your codebase? Any tips&tricks, best practice or something like that?

  • Event sourcing and persistence

    - by jgauffin
I'm reading up on event sourcing and have a question regarding persistence. I can still have a DB with all entities, right? Or should the events be replayed every time the application is started to get the latest version of each entity in the memory? Seems like a waste on larger systems (as in large amount of data)? The point with event sourcing is that I can can replay the events to populate a data store if required? (or analyze the data)
