  • Avoid External Dependencies in SQL Server Triggers

I sometimes want to perform auditing or other actions in a trigger based on some criteria. More specifically, there are a few cases that may warrant an e-mail; for example, if a web sale takes place that requires custom or overnight shipping and handling. It is tempting to just add code to the trigger that sends an e-mail when these criteria are met. But this can be problematic for two reasons: (1) your users are waiting for that processing to occur, and (2) if you can't send the e-mail, how do you decide whether or not to roll back the transaction, and how do you bring the problem to the attention of the administrator?

  • category title and affect on SEO and ranking

    - by Mark
We are working on a jobs and skills website (similiar to Skill Pages) and are deciding on categories. Rather than having load of categories like, for example, Builder, Electrician, Carpenter etc, we would like to have one word more general categories. So for example we have House, Computer, Education, Art etc. So a builder would be in category Home and a few others. Will this style negatively effect our SEO and ranking? And if so, should we abandon and go back to traditional categories and sub-categories?

  • Is it possible to boot without mounting /home?

    - by Exeleration-G
I want to backup my /home partition on /dev/sda6 using partclone, a command line utility. To do so, I first have to unmount the partition that I want to backup. Most of the time, this is easy, but /home is used by so many processes that it can't be unmounted without first killing all those processes. So, the thing I'm looking for is a way to boot Ubuntu, without mounting /home, so I can back up the not-mounted /dev/sda6 partition. Is that possible? To be clear, it would be nice if this special boot could be 'one-time-only'. So I'm not looking for ways to change /etc/fstab in such way that /dev/sda6 won't be mounted. That's because that would require me to change /etc/fstab twice each time just to make a backup. I'm aware of the fact that there are other backup solutions available, such as deja-dup. I'd like to use partclone, though.

  • How to create and maintain patch on Debian package?

    - by ???
I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?

  • Dual 7950, freezes during startup

    - by Hiro
I have two identical video cards right now. Xubuntu will boot up no problem if I only have one card installed. If I install the 2nd card it will just hang midway thru the loading screen. Regardless of which card I use and which position on the motherboard, it will freeze if I have both installed. I've tried installing the proprietary drivers, both fglrx and fglrx-updates, still freezes in the same spot. Uninstalled those and went back to the default ones. The only way I can get a terminal is by booting into failsafe mode. Booting using 13.10 i386 on a USB stick gives me some errors related to what I think is the 2nd video card: [drm:r600_ring_test] ERROR radeon: ring 1 test failed (scratch(0x850C)=0xCAFEDEAD) [drm:r600_dma_ring_test] ERROR radeon: ring 3 test failed (0x02FFFF6B) radeon 0000:0200.2 disabling GPU acceleration"

  • And again... VMware Player 4.0.4 on Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin)

Even with the new version of VMware Player 4.0.4 you are still required to patch their sources. So, same game as last month. Just changing the value of the required version in the kernel patch script of Stefano Angeleri (weltall) and you are done: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh Please change line 8 at the top of the script like so: plreqver=4.0.4 Save your modification and then run the following commands: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.shsudo service vmware restart And again, on first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Interestingly, one day ago the Ubuntu repositories provided a newer kernel version 3.2.0-25, so everything is running fine for now.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS AMD64 randomly uninstals packages / applications

    - by Jacob Lindeen
I am having a strange issue. Occasionally when installing new packages, I will get a system crash notification which I will report. The environment then becomes unstable, unity crashes and all open windows, loose title bars, and the main launcher shuts down. I usually have to run the command unity --replace to restore functionality, but ultimately end up having to reboot. Upon booting back up I find all of my user-installed packages are gone and I have to reinstall them via apt. Please tell me someone else is having this issue, because this is the second system and third install I have had this issue on.

  • How do I disable the upgrade to new version warning? [duplicate]

    - by Anatoliy
This question already has an answer here: Disable Ubuntu Update Manager's new version warning 2 answers After I allowed Ubuntu on my notebook to upgrade to 13.4, it lost Wi-Fi connection. Network menu does not show wireless access points, but according to syslog it establishes connection. Also, the wireless router provides IP address to the host. I don't want to spend time on debugging and solving the problem that most probably will reappear with new update, so I decided to reinstall 12.10 version. It recognized Broadcom Wi-Fi modem right after the boot, and everything went great, until today I powered it on and suddenly found that it is running 13.4 and all my problems are back! Is it possible to instruct it to stay with 12.10 until I decide to upgrade?

  • How can I optimize my development machine's files and directories? [closed]

    - by LuxuryMode
Like any programmer, I've got a lot of stuff on my machine. Some of that stuff is projects of my own, some are projects I'm working on for my employer, others are open-source tools and projects, etc. Currently, I have my files organized as follows: /Code --/development (things I'm sort of hacking on plus maybe libraries used in other projects) --/scala (organized by language...why? I don't know!) --/android --/ruby --/employer_name -- /mobile --/android --/ios --/open-source (basically my forks that I'm pushing commits back upstream from) --/some-awesome-oss-project --/another-awesome-one --/tools random IDE settings sprinkled in here plus some other apps As you can see, things are kind of a mess here. How can I keep things organized in some sort of coherent fashion?

  • Securing Facebook

    - by Promather
Probably like most of you, I am concerned about the privacy of Facebook. Some people suggested that I use the HTTPS address instead. Unfortunately, many links in the HTTPS page itself link back to HTTP. So I am wondering whether it is possible in Ubuntu to redirect any request to: http://www.facebook.com/ to https://www.facebook.com/ This way I feel safer. If you also know the solution for Windows, it might be great to share (probably as a comment to my question rather than answer, as this forum is supposed to be for Ubuntu) so that I can share it with friends.

  • suspend error on 14.04 LTS

    - by user1450663
I've looked around and seems like various problems around suspend are wide spreaded for 14.04 release, nevertheless I haven't seen exactly my problem reported, nor my laptop model mentioned. So, the problem. When I press sleep button system seems to be going into suspend, i.e. screen goes black, it stops responding on the keyboard and wireless LEDs turn off, however the power LED doesn't go into suspend state and CPU fan also keeps spinning. But unlike the other problem described here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1315435 when I close the lid and reopen it - system wakes up and goes back to normal locked screen state, so reboot is not needed. System details: This is a clean freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04, 32bit Laptop Dell D630 kernel 3.13.0-34-generic

  • C# XNA 4.0 multitextured cube

    - by chron
    So I am following this tutorial on how to draw a cube in XNA and I ran into a problem. Ok so my shader can only have texture right? I need to have a texture on the front and back of my cube. So I thought I could just have both textures stored in one texture. Problem is I do not know how to map out my UV coords to do so. (I tried dividing by 2 and such with no luck...). I am really new to this (not programming, just game development and some concepts), but how could I get UV coordinates for both halfs of the texture. private void ConstructCube(Vector3 Position,Vector3 Size) { _vertices = new VertexPositionNormalTexture[50]; // Calculate the position of the vertices on the top face. Vector3 topLeftFront = Position + new Vector3(-1.0f, 1.0f, -1.0f) * Size; Vector3 topLeftBack = Position + new Vector3(-1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f) * Size; Vector3 topRightFront = Position + new Vector3(1.0f, 1.0f, -1.0f) * Size; Vector3 topRightBack = Position + new Vector3(1.0f, 1.0f, 1.0f) * Size; // Calculate the position of the vertices on the bottom face. Vector3 btmLeftFront = Position + new Vector3(-1.0f, -1.0f, -1.0f) * Size; Vector3 btmLeftBack = Position + new Vector3(-1.0f, -1.0f, 1.0f) * Size; Vector3 btmRightFront = Position + new Vector3(1.0f, -1.0f, -1.0f) * Size; Vector3 btmRightBack = Position + new Vector3(1.0f, -1.0f, 1.0f) * Size; // Normal vectors for each face (needed for lighting / display) Vector3 normalFront = new Vector3(0.0f, 0.0f, 1.0f) * Size; Vector3 normalBack = new Vector3(0.0f, 0.0f, -1.0f) * Size; Vector3 normalTop = new Vector3(0.0f, 1.0f, 0.0f) * Size; Vector3 normalBottom = new Vector3(0.0f, -1.0f, 0.0f) * Size; Vector3 normalLeft = new Vector3(-1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f) * Size; Vector3 normalRight = new Vector3(1.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f) * Size; // UV texture coordinates Vector2 textureTopLeft = new Vector2(1.0f * Size.X, 0.0f * Size.Y); Vector2 textureTopRight = new Vector2(0.0f * Size.X, 0.0f * Size.Y); Vector2 textureBottomLeft = new Vector2(1.0f * Size.X, 1.0f * Size.Y); Vector2 textureBottomRight = new Vector2(0.0f * Size.X, 1.0f * Size.Y); // Add the vertices for the FRONT face. _vertices[0] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftFront, normalFront, textureTopLeft); _vertices[1] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftFront, normalFront, textureBottomLeft); _vertices[2] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightFront, normalFront, textureTopRight); _vertices[3] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftFront, normalFront, textureBottomLeft); _vertices[4] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightFront, normalFront, textureBottomRight); _vertices[5] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightFront, normalFront, textureTopRight); // Add the vertices for the BACK face. _vertices[6] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftBack, normalBack, textureTopRight); _vertices[7] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightBack, normalBack, textureTopLeft); _vertices[8] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftBack, normalBack, textureBottomRight); _vertices[9] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftBack, normalBack, textureBottomRight); _vertices[10] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightBack, normalBack, textureTopLeft); _vertices[11] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightBack, normalBack, textureBottomLeft); // Add the vertices for the TOP face. _vertices[12] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftFront, normalTop, textureBottomLeft); _vertices[13] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightBack, normalTop, textureTopRight); _vertices[14] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftBack, normalTop, textureTopLeft); _vertices[15] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftFront, normalTop, textureBottomLeft); _vertices[16] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightFront, normalTop, textureBottomRight); _vertices[17] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightBack, normalTop, textureTopRight); // Add the vertices for the BOTTOM face. _vertices[18] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftFront, normalBottom, textureTopLeft); _vertices[19] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftBack, normalBottom, textureBottomLeft); _vertices[20] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightBack, normalBottom, textureBottomRight); _vertices[21] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftFront, normalBottom, textureTopLeft); _vertices[22] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightBack, normalBottom, textureBottomRight); _vertices[23] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightFront, normalBottom, textureTopRight); // Add the vertices for the LEFT face. _vertices[24] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftFront, normalLeft, textureTopRight); _vertices[25] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftBack, normalLeft, textureBottomLeft ); _vertices[26] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftFront, normalLeft, textureBottomRight ); _vertices[27] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftBack, normalLeft, textureTopLeft); _vertices[28] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmLeftBack, normalLeft, textureBottomLeft ); _vertices[29] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topLeftFront, normalLeft, textureTopRight ); // Add the vertices for the RIGHT face. _vertices[30] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightFront, normalRight, textureTopLeft); _vertices[31] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightFront, normalRight, textureBottomLeft); _vertices[32] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightBack, normalRight, textureBottomRight); _vertices[33] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightBack, normalRight, textureTopRight); _vertices[34] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(topRightFront, normalRight, textureTopLeft); _vertices[35] = new VertexPositionNormalTexture(btmRightBack, normalRight, textureBottomRight); done = true; }

  • How do I recover my accidentally lost Windows partitions after installing Ubuntu?

    - by Totally newbie
I have a Toshiba satellite A-200 laptop with a Vista OS on it with 4 NTFS partitions (C:) Vista (D:) Entertainment (E:) Work (F:) Sources and I wanted to start using Ubuntu instead. So I tried it first from the live CD and everything was OK and all the partitions were shown and working and so I decided to install Ubuntu to replace Vista on the (C:) drive. After I did that I can no longer find my folders and files on the (D:), (E:), (F:) partitions and the only file system that is shown is one 198 GB although my HDD is 320 GB. I can't access the lost data on the remaining 120 GB which I hope is still there and not totally lost I am now working from the live CD but I am unable to install testdisk. Can I recover the Vista partitions by the product recovery CD to get my laptop back to the factory settings? Can I recover the NTFS partitions using a recovery program for Windows or will that make the problem worse? I need these data badly as I don't have a backup for them.

  • Will search engines ever change to allow longer title and description tags? [closed]

    - by guisasso
I was just wondering: The standard title length is 64 characters, while meta description tags are 150-160. I was thinking, that it was probably done like that originally because of screen resolutions back in the day, that could not really fit a lot of content. Google still displays search results in a incredible small resolution fixed to the left side of the browser, and it's simplicity is probably what makes it so popular. With websites such as bing, displaying a richer more vivid search experience, in your opinion, will search engines ever change to accept better and longer meta description tags and titles? (I'm asking because we work to accommodate their standards, but what if they change?)

We have developed a job-portal where users can view jobs and and also post jobs. We have used Php and MySQL. We hosted this on web faction. Now we want to develop the mobile app of the job portal for android, ios and windows. As the database should be synchronous and aligned dynamically with apps and website database. As the back-end code has to be changed to Java in android and c# in windows, how to manage a single synchronous database?

  • Retrieve the coordinates of the *occluding* (closest/drawn) pixels during 3D overlap, using OpenGL?

    - by Big Rich
Hi, Sorry if the question is not worded well, I'm a new to both 3D and OpenGL. How could I go about obtaining the 3D coordinates of the occluding object, at the point where occlusion is happening (i.e. the 'intersection' of the object in front/closest to the screen)? Just to offer a [very] rudimentary, visual, example, if you were to form an index-finger cross, with your right hand closest to your face, I'd like to know the coordinates of the part of your right finger which obscures the other finger (obviously back within the OpenGL context - no jokers ;-) ). If there is a way to find out both about the occluder (hider) and the occluded (hidden) objects in OpenGL, then that would be of great use, also. Cheers Rich

  • Multiply mode in SpriteBatch

    - by ashes999
I have a "lighting" texture (black background with white or colours for lights) that I want to draw as a multiplcation operation. SpriteBatch.Begin can specify BlendState.Additive, but there's no BlendState.Multiplicative. I also tried the solution in this answer, but it didn't work -- even when I (incorrectly?) changed the code to work with XNA 4 style ColorDestinationBlend, I ended up with the final solution being inverted (black area where the light is, everything else is visible). I initially thought of a shader, but I couldn't get shaders to work with MonoGame, so I'm falling back to SpriteBatch.

  • Cloud proxying service

    - by ChristopherJ
I have an app that mashes up images from Bing image search, it's hosted on Heroku written in rails. The app is client side in javascript, so the mashup is done on an html5 canvas - this means though that if I fetch the images direct from the Bing server, the canvas gets dirty and I can't save it. As a quick work around, i have set up a route on my rails app that simply proxies the request to Bing and passes the result back through. Obviously this is a very poor performance solution and will eat up my dynos very quickly. Can anyone suggest a more suitable option? At the moment I'm thinking maybe Amazon EC2 with apache mod_rewrite rules would be better performing and more cost effective. Is there a cloud service (or an app I could deploy to a cloud service) that would be more appropriate for proxying requests for me so that my javascript can fetch the images without dirtying the canvas?
