Hi
I dusted off an old laptop from 2004 which has Windows XP. I want to put Ubuntu on it.
So, I downloaded the CD image and then burnt it to a disc.
I tried starting the laptop and booting from CD but no luck. The CD drive doesn't work in the laptop anymore!
So I shared the files on the local server and then accessed the wubi.exe file from within Windows XP, and it proceeded to download something else and install. It then asked me to restart, which I did.
I now have a folder C:\ubuntu with a bunch of files in it. How do I get the option to boot to Ubuntu?
Sorry, I have never installed a Linux variant before!
Many thanks
I thought it would be cool to use Mozilla's Prism to create a webapp for min.us, but drag and drop is disallowed because the site doesn't see the program as Firefox, Chrome or Safari, those of which are apparently the only browsers allowed to do drag and drop for fear that something will be horribly broken.
I'm pretty sure Prism runs on the same engine as Firefox, yet I wouldn't doubt it if Prism is running on an older version since it's kind of a forgotten beta.
Anyways, like the title says, I want to be able to make Prism webapps appear look like Firefox to websites to unlock awesome features.
Also, if it can only be done with Fluid, then I answers regarding that will be fine. I'm not sure what engine it's running though.
My Mac Mini outputs to my two new monitors - Dell U2311Hs.
The LED on the bezel displays blue when receiving a signal, or yellow otherwise. Both screens are displaying blue.
It also seems my Mini can see both of them...
However, one of them is black. It just displays black, but appears to be receiving a signal (when I turn the Mac off, it then displays No Signal).
To make things weirder, on startup, the boot up (white with Apple logo) appears on the right monitor (the one that now displays black).
Occasionally, it flickers up on the black screen for 1 second.
I have tried Detect Displays. It appears to do nothing.
I'm also running a dual monitor KVM. Video connections are DVI-D.
How can I fix this situation?
Thanks.
Update
This is the weirdest thing - I used the DVI-D cable that came with the KVM and it seems to have fixed it - I didn't both because it looks identical to any other DVI cable (in form an pin out).
So, I will accept an answer if someone can tell me what may be the difference in these cables?

Facebook photo privacy is more complex than most people think - including the bloggers who fill the Internet trying to explain it in simple terms.
Not only there is the basic album-level privacy setting to consider, but also what happens with Tagging (and related privacy settings) as well as the Share button when clicked by a Friend.
Has anybody seen a good, engineering-type (e.g. UML) diagram? I envision it should include the various privacy "states" a photo can be in, what causes state transitions, and the characteristics of each state?
Thanks
Hi,
At work I have EXCHANGE Server, so I am getting emails (Work related). I wanted to add my personal email (POP or IMAP) and get those emails too.
I am afraid that if i do that, my work can still have access to my personal emails? and they will see if I send or receive emails.
Any suggestions?
I have a Gigabyte Z68X-UD4-B3 motherboard. It advertises this new thing called "XHD", which is like RAID but makes a SSD and traditional-style drive work together to enable high speed with high capacity. I don't want to use this feature, and I already have Windows 7 64 installed without using this feature.
When I first installed my 2 hard drives (1 SSD and 1 traditional-style drive) in my machine and booted it up for the first time, it ran a program from the mobo that asked me if I wanted to set up XHD. Thinking it would go to some config screen, I said yes. It immediately started doing something with my drives and finished. I considered that strange, but figured it wouldn't matter when I simply install Windows onto my SSD only. I now have my BIOS and Windows running in AHCI mode with no RAID arrays and separate drives.
My SSD is one of those new Corsair Force GT drives which loses power every so often, causing Windows to BSOD. I've figured everything out about this problem, including installing the latest firmware from Corsair, and the only way to fix it at this point is by installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology to control AHCI instead of Windows, since the Windows AHCI driver disables the drive's power every once in a while and can't be configured not to do so.
I've tried installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology. When I reboot my machine after doing so, it BSODs just after the Windows logo. I've figured out this is because my SSD and my traditional drive are flagged as RAID, as seen in the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" program found by switching the BIOS hard drive handling to "RAID" mode. This is due to the XHD auto-config program I mentioned earlier.
Normally, the BIOS is set to AHCI, and when the drives boot in AHCI mode, they work perfectly. So, I've concluded the data is stored in AHCI mode but the drives' flags are set to RAID.
I've figured out that I can accomplish my objective by using the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" program on the mobo (with "Reset disks to non-RAID"), but doing so would cause it to completely wipe the drives I select. I want to simply toggle these flags from RAID to AHCI so Intel Rapid Storage Technology doesn't fail and cause a BSOD upon booting, but without wiping the drives.
Is there a way in nginx to redirect everything from domain1.com to domain2.com, except for the homepage?
Right now I have:
server {
listen 80;
server_name www.domain1.com domain1.com;
rewrite ^ http://domain2.com$uri permanent;
}
This works, except that I'd like http://domain1.com (without any additional path) to be left alone and not redirected. Basically, I need to redirect everything, to avoid broken links, but I want to use the homepage of domain1 to serve a static file.
I want to make it so that nautilus requires me to press a key combination to delete files - so that I do not accidentally delete files on a network share with no confirmation again.
Ideally I would make the behavior identical to OSX's Finder, so that I press ctrl+backspace to delete files.
I'm in the middle of upgrading, and purchasing licensing for 3 of our Servers.
One will be a Windows Server 2008 machine, running SQL Server 2008.
The other two machines will be domain controllers, both running Windows 2003.
Our organisation has 30 Users.
I understand (through our reseller) that a Windows 2008 licence gives "downgrade" rights to use 2003.
Realistically, for the above setup of 3 machines, will I just need one set of 30 CALs for 2008?
I just tried updating the iPhone's firmware, and things went haywire.
iTunes informed the update had failed and linked me to this page.
The iPhone is stuck on the image from the top of that page.
I held down the sleep and home buttons until it turned off and turned it back on, and then went through the iPhone's 'restore' mode.
It then error'd again and I'm stuck back with the logos on the iPhone.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks
So i have this text file that looks something like this:
Header1 Header2 Header3 Header4 A1 B1 C1 D1 A2 B2 C2 D2
and so on.
When imported, I'd want the data to format itself in 4 columns. I tried the Get External Data from Text, and it successfully imports it, but it doesn't wrap it around, so it just keeps making columns for every space. I'd want it to go on the next line after 4 (in this case) elements have been added.
What's the simplest way to achieve this?
EDIT: My answer follows, since I'm not yet allowed to answer my own questions yet.
The Excel function I needed is called indirect().
Not sure how it actually works though, so hopefully someone can help out with that, but the function call that worked for me is
=INDIRECT(ADDRESS((ROW(A1)-1)*4+COLUMN(A1),1))
which i found over here: http://www.ozgrid.com/forum/showthread.php?t=101584&p=456031#post456031
Note: this required me to add the text to excel where i'd get this row full of columns, and then flip it so that i'd have a column full of rows.
Is it possible to change the default terminal emulator on Windows (7 and 8 in particular) from cmd to, for example, Console2 or ConEmu? In essence, I want all command line tools, whether launched by double clicking, from "Run" or by other processes to use the custom terminal.
This is a trivial matter on Linux, is it even possible on Windows?
It would be especially helpful if this could be done via a script.
I installed nginx using ports and started it with sudo. Accessing the nginx welcome page from localhost works perfectly, however accessing it from an external computer fails.
Doing an nmap on the computer from the outside reveals
80/tcp filtered http
So clearly the mac firewall is blocking the port. I then proceed to add the nginx executable to the firewall exception list as seen in this image, however the nmap still shows up as port 80 being filtered and I'm unable to access the webpage. The exact binary that is in the list is /opt/local/sbin/nginx which to my knowledge seems correct
Any ideas what I should do? Thanks!
P.S. Turning the firewall off does allow me to access the website from the outside world, however that isn't an ideal solution.
The situation: My wife has a 13" MacBook Pro that she uses for email, Facebook, web surfing, and working from home. I'm about to buy us our first iPad. My wife's brother's computer just went belly-up, and she's contemplating giving him her MacBook and just using the iPad. The question is whether or not this is possible or realistic.
Obviously, the iPad is well-suited for the email/web/Facebook tasks, but the working-from-home thing is an absolute must -- if the iPad can't handle that, it's a deal-breaker. For my wife, working from home means two things:
Accessing her workplace computer's Windows Vista desktop, which she currently does via Remote Desktop.
Editing Office documents locally, which she currently syncs via Dropbox. Being able to edit documents locally is important, because sometimes she will download documents and edit them when she doesn't have network access (e.g. on the subway).
I'm more than happy to get a keyboard dock for her, so typing won't be an issue. Are there any iPad apps she can use to access her work computer and edit her work files?
Thanks for any suggestions!
I'm pensioning off my 10-years-old home server and replacing it with an Ubuntu 10.04 box. The two storage devices are a Western Digital Caviar Green 2.0TB HD and an Intel X25-M 34nm Gen 2 80GB SATA II 2.5inch SSD (the box has 8GB RAM and an i5 750, if it matters).
I don't care much about boot times (since I don't plan to reboot all that often;-); the main frequent, performance-demanding task will be (re)building large open source C or C++ software packages from sources (as an open source contributor, I do that often).
So, I thought I'd keep the SSD as the secondary drive and the HD as the primary one, using the SSD mostly for the files that can otherwise demand a lot of seeking (esp. in a parallel make).
However, the friendly vendor (perhaps more experienced in Windows systems than in Linux ones) thinks the "normal" way to configure the machine would be with the SSD as the primary drive. I'm pretty rusty on configuring and tuning systems, so, I thought I'd better double check on SuperUser... thanks in advance for advice about this choice!
I have a simple LAN set up at home using a Linksys WRT54GSV4 as my primary router and an Encore ENHWI-2AN3 as an access point. I connect the Encore to the Linksys by running a cable from one of the Linksys LAN ports into the Encore WAN input.
I originally configured this using the Encore setup wizard, setting the device up in AP Router Mode. It detected the input network and worked about as expected, creating a second network that used my primary network to connect to the internet.
It worked fine for about 2 weeks, then abruptly cut out today. I checked to make sure the network was still live through the cable going into the Encore (provides internet when connected to a laptop directly) and that devices are still able to connect to the network being broadcast by the Encore.
When I try to rerun the connection wizard on the Encore, I receive the message "No Services found in WAN port." The WAN Settings is no longer retrieving a dynamic ip from the line. I tried providing a static IP, assigning an IP address within the subnet range of my primary router that wasn't being used and pointing the Default Gateway to the Linksys IP, but this did not work either.
When I plug the cable into the WAN port, an internet light comes on that is not lit when a live network is not connected.
I've tried doing a hard reset on the Encore (held down the rest button until the lights flashed, reconfigured from scratch), but the WAN settings are still not detected. Also tried powering off and on the modem, linksys, and encore.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
I have a VM which has 2GB Ram, (full specs)
And I am setting up a site which has one table in particular with over a million records.
There's little or no usage of this particular database (perhaps once or twice a day) but simply running mysql grinds the whole server to a halt. I've looked through the top results but nothing is really denting the CPU however the memory seems to be the issue.
The site isnt even live of taking requests yet. the memory situation looks like this:
# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2006 1880 126 0 3 53
-/+ buffers/cache: 1823 183
Swap: 2047 345 1702
Are there any good pointers to tune mysql to stop hogging the system memory?
Thanks very much

We have a Windows network with a domain and about 50 clients. A few months ago, we installed Symantec Antivirus, Corporate Edition ver. 10.1.8.8000.
There are two problems. The larger problem is that the software isn't very good at stopping viruses. In the last month, four different machines have become infected with those viruses that masquerade as antivirus software. Two machines I was able to clean with MalWareBytes. The other two were hopeless, and I had to reinstall Windows. Is there something I can do to make the Symantec product more effective? As far as I can tell, it successfully updates definitions nightly and pushes the definitions to the clients.
The smaller problem is that the Symantec client applications sometimes initiate scans at random (and inappropriate) times. One of my co-workers complained to me yesterday that her computer was running very slow. I looked at the scan history and found that Symantec had scanned the computer three times during the past two days, and each time during the workday. No threats were found. Not sure why it's doing this, but I'd like it to stop.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I set up a simple Bind server on my VPS and it is working properly.
The problem occurs with my local windows machines, which are connected to internet through the home router.
I created an A-record named 'dev' and it is invisible from my local network for some reason, though people from other locations can resolve dev.mydomain.com. Ironically, dev.mydomain.com cannot be resolved for myself only.
If I add another A-record, say, 'gamma' then it becomes visible from my local windows machines instantly. So this is just for that particular 'dev' name.
The only difference is that I had dev.mydomain.com server on another IP but that was a month ago; all nameservers have been changed since then. I tried to reboot my router and flushed dns cache on windows machines: no result.
Thank you in advance.
