I want to be able to detect (using regular expressions) if a string contains hebrew characters both utf8 and iso8859-8 in the php programming language. thanks!
Hello:
I am very new to the world of byte encoding so please excuse me (and by all means, correct me) if I am using/expressing simple concepts in the wrong way.
I am trying to understand variable-byte encoding. I have read the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variable-width_encoding) as well as a book chapter from an Information Retrieval textbook. I think I understand how to encode a decimal integer. For example, if I wanted to provide variable-byte encoding for the integer 60, I would have the following result:
1 0 1 1 1 1 0 0
(please let me know if the above is incorrect). If I understand the scheme, then I'm not completely sure how the information is compressed. Is it because usually we would use 32 bits to represent an integer, so that representing 60 would result in 1 1 1 1 0 0 preceded by 26 zeros, thus wasting that space as opposed to representing it with just 8 bits instead?
Thank you in advance for the clarifications.
Which is the best way to manage a website with one or more mirrors so that:
Google don't consider it as "dupicated content"
The website is correctly indexed
No inconsistencies or duplicated information are present in Google Analytics
The Google webmaster guidelines in general are respected
NOTE: I'm not sure if I should ask this question here or in ServerFault. It looks a bit in the middle between programming and server administration. Let me know if you think ServerFault represent a more appropriate place for this and I'll move it.
Thanks.
Hello, i am new to iPhone programming and i was thinking of developing an sms application through which user can send and receive sms inside my application similar to iPhone own message application.i think apple doesn't provide any API regarding accessing sms inbox?? is there any other way around it??
Does anyone know where can i find an explanation and implementation of the diff algorithm. First of all i have to recognize that i'm not sure if this is the correct name of the algorithm. For example, how Stackoverflow marks the differences between two edits of the same question?
ps: I know C and PHP programming languages.

I'm a Spanish professor & computer groupie. About 15 years ago, I authored in HyperCard a series of verb conjugation programs that are now completely out of date with respect to System OS X. I would like to redo these programs myself because I had a lot of fun doing them last time (mostly I coded while my son played in Leaps and Bounds, you know, one of those places where parents take their kids & let them run wild through the tubes...).
Colleagues have mentioned using Flash, Director, and various other solutions, but I saw a presentation on RoR at our SIDLIT conference today, and was inspired. I will be parsing and comparing strings (and there are other features on top of that, but that is the main one), "adding" strings relationally indexed in some kind of database(s). It will also have to handle various foreign characters (accents, upside down question marks, etc.). On top of the main process of the program, it will have to provide a practice vs. test mode, keep track of specific answers as well as totals right/wrong, and print a report. Would this be either easier and/or more efficiently done in RoR than in other languages. I am pretty sure that it will work on a Microsoft server, right? Because I think that is where most of our stuff is. I would be programming either on a Mac or a PC, whichever you think is easier.
So, in summary, is RoR the way for me to go with this project? If I have some (little) experience programming in Hypercard and C, should I be able to pick RoR up fairly quickly? What things will I need to start (I already saw something called Redhills foreign key migration plugin, which I assume would be beneficial)? I still have my old scripts from hypercard, however what I would really like to do is to combine all six of my former tense-specific programs into one larger program. I figure that it wouldn't be too hard to reference the individual tenses in some way--could that be a class? Many thanks for any help you can give me on this forum.

Hi,
I am new to iphone programming. I heard from few people that even if the iphone application is sold for money from itunes, it is possible to hack the application and install on another phone.
How much of this is true ? If true is there a way to programmatically control my application from getting illegally copied to jailbreaked or another iphone ?
During the following months I'll have some spare time so I thought of picking up a new programming language.I've been reading some articles about Go and Io and both of them look interesting and very promising so I'm stuck making a decision about which one to pick up next.
I'm mainly interested in distributed systems and concurrency.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I'd like to begin tinkering around with an RTS AI, but I'm having trouble finding a good environment to work with, ie a game that has been already created. I have looked at Spring RTS and Bos Wars, but they don't seem to be conducive to creating simple examples.
I am not totally opposed to writing my own game environment, it would just take a long time. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can get my feet wet without programming my own game?
Hi,
I am writing clients in Java that store the data on a database server. So far, the IP and Port of the server has to be specified in the client's settings manually. I have heard, that it is possible to automatically determine the IP of database servers via broadcast / multicast / UDP (I am not familiar with these concepts).
Question: Is there a way to retrieve the IP adresses of all available database-servers in the local network? I am working with the h2 database system so far.

Let me put it to you this way: I'm a top-notch programmer, but a notoriously bad interviewee.
I've flunked 3 interviews consecutively because I get so nervous that my voice tightens at least 2 octaves higher and I start visibly shaking -- mind you, I can handle whatever technical questions the interviewer throws at me in that state, but I think it looks bad to come off as a quivering, squeaky-voiced young woman during a job interview.
I've just got the personality type of a shy computer programmer. No matter how technical I am, I'm going to get passed up in favor of a smooth talker. I have another interview coming up shortly, and I want to really impress the company.
Here are my trouble spots:
What can I do to be less
nervous during my interview? I
always get really excited when I
hear I have a face-to-face
interview, but get more and more
anxious as D-Day the
interview approaches.
My employers wants me to
explain what I used to do at my
prior employment. I'm a very chatty
person and tend to talk/squeak for
10 minutes at a time. How long or
short should I time my answers?
On that note, when I'm
explaining what I did at prior jobs,
what exactly is my interviewer
looking for?
At some point, my interviewer
will ask "do you have any questions
for me while you're here?" I
should, but what kinds of questions should I ask to show that
I'm interested in being employed?
My interviewer always asks why
I'm looking for a new job. The real
reason is that my present salary is
$27K/yr [Edit to add: and I've yet to get a raise since I started], and I want to make more
money -- otherwise the work
environment is fine. How do I
sugarcoat "I want to make more
money" into something that sounds
nicer?
I have only one prior
programmer job, and I've worked
there for 18 months, but I have the
skill of someone with 4 to 6 years
of experience. What can I say to
compete against applicants with more
work experience?
I took a low-paying $27K/yr programming job just to get my foot in IT, and I've been trying to leverage that job as a stepping stone to better opportunities. I get interviews because I consistently out-score senior-level developers in aptitude tests, and my desired salary range is right in the ballpark of what most companies want to offer.
Unfortunately, while I've been a programming as a hobby for 10 years and I'm geared to graduate with my BA in Comp Sci in May '09, employers see me as a junior-level programmer with no degree. I want to prove them wrong and get a job that matches my skill level.
I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to offer, especially if they can help me get a better job in the process.
I'm having problems in visual basic programming. Currently I open a file using an open file dialog window and navigating to a file to open it. I want to be able to write a simple line saying ( and this is the best way I can describe it), Open this file "....\users.text".
Please can someone help?
Coming from Eclipse, I'm disappointed with the very limited syntax coloring capabilities offered for C# by Visual Studio (all versions, up to 2010).
In particular, I'm interesting in distinct coloring for methods / fields / locals / static stuff.
I'm aware Visual Assist can enhance the coloring, but I've failed to find any free alternative capable of doing that, so I'm turning to SO (I hope it's programming-related enough). Is there any free (or at least cheaper than Visual Assist) solution capable of enhancing the syntax coloring for C#?
Hey,
I have an input text :
<input name="Email" type="text" id="Email" value="[email protected]" />
I want to put a default value like "What's your programming question ? be specific." in StackOverFlow, and when the user click on it the default value disapear.
Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm).
I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?
Hi all -
I'm going to start on a long (~1-year) programming project in Python. I want to use wxPython for my GUI (supports 2.6), but I also want to use 3.1 for the rest of the project (to start using the 3.x syntax).
Is there any way for me to design a project that mixes 2.x and 3.x modules? Or should I just bite the bullet and use either 2.x (preferred, since I really want to learn wxPython) or 3.x throughout?
Thanks,
Mike

Which paradigm is better for design and analysis of algorithms?
Which is faster? Because I have a subject called Design and Analysis of Algorithms in university and have a time limit for programs. Is OOP slower than Procedure programming? Or the time difference is not big?
Hi,

HI all,
I'm developing a software to control light show ( through DMX protocol ), i use C# and wpf to develop my main software (.net 4.0)
To help people preview their show, i would like to make a live 3D visualizer...
First, i thought that i could use wpf 3D to make the visualizer, but i need to work with light ..
My main application should send property ( beam angle, orientation (X,Y), position(X,Y), Brush ( color, shape, effect)) to the 3D visualizer
But i would like to be able to move light (position in the scene) by mouse during execution and had value in return...
So ..
Does XNA is the easiest way to doing that ?
Can you help me for that :
Generating light (orientation , bitmap like filter in front of light )
Dynamically moving object with mouse and get position in return
Dynamically add or remove fixture
All of your advice, sample, example are very welcome ... I don't espect to have a perfect result at the first time but i need to understand the main concepts for doing that
Thank You !!
Hi,
i'm pretty new 2 programming, and I'm creating a simple text-based game
I'm wondering if there is a simple way to create my own terminal-type window with which I can place coloured input etc.
Is there a graphics module well suited to this?
I'm using Mac, but I would like it to work on Windows as well
Thanks
I have just started the Assembly language programming and in the first lecture our teacher told us about intel 8080 and intel 8085 and he said there was 64k memory with these processor.
Now i want to know that how we find this amount of memory with specific processor, for example i have a processor 1.8 Ghz , now how i can find out the amount of memory that can be used with this processor.
what i am trying to ask is tell me the method how we can find out this amount of memory?
I was trying to execute a command through C#, but when I run the following code, a blank cmd window just opens up. The code:
string command = string.Format(@"adb install C:\Users\Mohit\Programming\Android_Workspace\{0}\bin\{0}.apk", appName);
ProcessStartInfo cmdsi = new ProcessStartInfo("cmd.exe");
cmdsi.Arguments = command;
Process cmd = Process.Start(cmdsi);
What could be wrong? I am sure the syntax is right.
I am an experienced WinForms/WPF/Silverlight developer and have an interview for a product that is ASP.Net. I am very familiar with C# and .NET, as well as standard HTML and CSS (from rails programming).
So what else should a WinForms developer learn before and ASP.Net interview?
