Which features do you wish were being pencilled in for future .Net releases? I'm curious to see what other language features I'm not currently aware of.
I personally like the 'exclusive or' operator when it makes sense in context of boolean checks because of its conciseness. I much prefer to write
if (boolean1 ^ boolean2)
{
//do it
}
than
if((boolean1 && !boolean2) || (boolean2 && !boolean1))
{
//do it
}
but I often get confused looks (from other experienced java developers, not just the newbies), and sometimes comments about how it should only be used for bitwise operations. I'm curious as to the best practices others use around the '^' operator.
Users need to be able to add a specific type of column to an otherwise static table on my web page and then save the information they enter in there to the database.
I've been told that in reality they will almost never go over 5 columns but I would rather support N. The columns will all be of the same datatype.
My first thought was to have an XML column with the values from all added columns in there but I was curious if anyone else had come up with a better solution. Suggestions?
While there are multiple ways to reverse bit order in a byte, I'm curious as to what is the "simplest" for a developer to implement. And by reversing I mean:
1110 -> 0111
0010 -> 0100
This is similar to, but not a duplicate of this PHP question.
It's been a mystery how does Cell Minute Tracker manage to fetch AT&T users data.
Maybe someone here has the long waited answer.
I'm really curious rather they got a confirmation to scrape user’s cellular report
And how they can fire up multiple requests to AT&T site without being banned?
I'm waiting for someone who could shed some light on this mystery
Thanks

I'm using chrome (the dev version for my mac).
I was looking at the timeline for my page loading and I saw that there is a 150ms delay due to some garbage collection taking place while loading the page.
http://cl.ly/cce10619c698a5b276e2
It's the yellow line.
I was curious if there's any way to stop this, delay it, whatever so I get the page to load faster?

I have C# web application that I want it to send out an email on a certain date, such as if equipment isn't returned on the day it was due. Data is in MS SQL database.
I've got all the email code already done, and I'm just curious how do I trigger this email, say after the COB on that particular day?
Thanks,
Eric
With the large amount of BCL types such as Dictionary, HashTable, List, all the IEnumerable types; I was curious to know what were some of the more advanced structures you've had to implement and for what algorithm/application.
I'm learning Node.js and looking forward to create a simple web application which will be based on Express
and I was thinking of something like creating user groups and each group has its own users and each group has its own permissions
(Just like ACL in Cakephp)
So can anyone recommend a good module or whatever to do so ?
Also I'm a little curious about security and how these passwords are going to be saved and what type of encryption the passwords will be encrypted in.
Thanks :)
While studying C# I found it really strange, that dynamically typed Python will rise an error in the following code:
i = 5
print i + " "
whereas statically typed C# will normally proceed the similar code:
int i = 5;
Console.Write(i + " ");
I would expect other way around (in python I would be able to do this without any casting, but C# would require me to cast int to string or string to int).
Just to highlight, I am not asking what language is better, I am curious what was the reason behind implementing the language this way.
We’ve got an interesting requirement that we’ll want to support multiple languages at runtime since we’re a service. If a user talks to us using Japanese or English, we’ll want to respond in the appropriate language. FxCop likes us to store our strings in resource files, but I was curious to know if there was an integrated way to select resource string at runtime without having to do it manually.
Bottom Line: We need to be able to support multiple languages in a single binary. :)
What actually happens to the .box file (which according to the docs is simply a vbox image in tar form, in a particular format) after the first command
vagrant box add lucid32 http://files.vagrantup.com/lucid32.box
is executed?
I can't seem to find the filesystem location of lucid32.box after the download has successfully completed...
I am aware it doesn't really matter as
vagrant init lucid32
vagrant up
vagrant ssh
will get me into the vm irregardless.
But I am curious where .box is located.
So I am making a small site using cakephp, and my ACL is set up so that every time a piece of content is created, an ACL rule is created to link the owner of the piece of content to the actual content. This allows each owner to edit/delete their own content. This method just seems so inefficient, because there is an equivalent amount of ACL rules as content in the database. I was curious, how do big sites, with millions of pieces of content, solve this problem?
What is a standardized alternative to window.location.href function? I was checking on w3schools.com that it is implemented in all major browsers so there's no problem but I'm rather curious how to do that properly.
From here is the statement that the function is not standardized: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/DOM/window.location
Thanks!
I'm from a WinAPI / C++ background, and I'm curious as to what the Java world uses in place of a threaded message loop in a worker thread to handle communications and interactions between threads. The idea is to use a message pump in both the worker thread, and the main thread, and have them posting messages back and forth. This solution is very WinAPI / C++ centric, and probably not the preferred method of achieving this goal in Java.
What is the 'Java' way to do something like this?
Hey guys, there is a form where the user select some of his friends and I'm curious on how I can implement a list that searches simultaneously while the user is typing a friend's name and when he selects the name the name is written in the text box(jQuery). And if the user wants to select more than one friend, when I'm inserting the names in the database, how can I separate the names that are written in one input field?
I'm curious if there is anyone around here that has inside information on the implementation details of window properties (SetProp, GetProp, etc.) in Windows.
SetProp @ MSDN
GetProp @ MSDN
For instance, how are storage and lookups done?
As we all know java program will start executing from the main method of the class. So was curious to know that is there any other way by which we can make another static method as the entry point, that is can we override this property of the JVM to start with some other method than main?
many of you will ask why do you want to do this? so want to make it clear that its just a curiosity to know about. And if it is there then it might help in many ways
My application stores lots of its users friends' phone numbers. I'd like to allow users to associate names with these phone numbers, but I don't want to make users manually type in names (obviously).
I'm curious what the best overall approach is here, as well as the best way to implement it
Overall approach-wise, I imagine using Gmail / Yahoo / Windows Live contacts is best (the Facebook API doesn't let you access phone numbers), though the gems I've found for interacting with these contacts APIs (this and this) only give you access to the names and email addresses of each contact.
I'm designing a custom VM and am curious about how many registers I should use. Initially, I had 255, but I'm a little concerned about backing 255 pointers (a whole KB) on to the stack or heap every time I call a function, when most of them won't even be used. How many registers should I use?
If you are looking for /Resource/Id and that resource does not exist, I had always though that 404 was the appropriate response. However, when returning "null" from a Jersey handler, I get back a "204 No Content". I can likely work with either one, but am curious to others thoughts on this.
To answer my own next question. To get jersey to return 404 you must throw an exception.
if (a == null)
throw new WebApplicationException(404);
hi all, just curious if there was a good service paid or unpaid where I can send in either a user's email address or the domain from their email address and get back if they're a known spammer or not?
thanks
How can I solve the issue of content existing in multiple versions and multiple languages?
My current structure:
Each content can only have one active version in each language, and that's how I'm curious on how to best solve.
Right now I have a column of the contentversions table, which means for each change of active version I have to run a update and set active=false on all version and then a update to set active=true for the piece of content in question.
I've been playing around with the Reactive Extension for a little while now, but mostly limited to handling/composing user driven events within a WPF frontend.
It's such a powerful, new way of doing async programming, and I'm curious as to what other people are doing with it, and where do you think it might be able to improve the way we're currently doing things?
Just a curious question but is there any programs that can help/aid you when you write PHP codes? Say there is an error in your code and using this program it would help you locate it, etc.
I might be thinking too much...
