I am trying to change the task bar color of my WIndows 7 to black.. something similar to Vista. Is it possible without installing any 3rd party app? Many thanks!!
The icons of my folders in Windows8 have changed automatically !
Now it is similar to that of the Unknown File Type icon.
My C: drive icon and some icons in the Explorer-Home menu had also changed, but they became normal after a restart. But the folder icons (Medium Size) don't change. This is also seen in the "Save Dialog"-box. Please help, Thanks in advance...

I have a directory, that contains ~ 3 million files in certain subdirectories on a Windows 2008 server. Manually deleting the files via SHIFT+DEL on the root dir takes ages. Is there any other way to do the deletion in a faster manner?
I want to setup another Hyper-V VM for installing Matlabs/doing some compute-intensive programming using C.
I keep thinking that Windows Server HPC 2008 is designed for this sort of work. Would I be on the right track to setup a single VM with this OS and install this software? Or is HPC more for grid/distributed computing?
Thanks
I've always wanted some cool way to log into Windows like inserting a designated USB or voice recognition. Only recently did I discover http://www.luxand.com/blink/ which uses facial recognition to log into your PC.
What other software lets you change the way you log in?
Does an application exist that will cause the computer to switch (bring in to focus) between two different applications, on a timer? This is for Windows 7.
I need this for a screen that will display publicly to customers. I want the screen to switch between two different applications every, say, 30 seconds. I figure there are enough businesses out there will customer-facing monitors these days that something simple like this must exist!
I have a VMware Workstation 10.0 installation with several virtual networks including the default host-only and NAT networks.
After upgrading to Windows8.1, the NAT network was not working. I booted an Ubuntu VM with the default network setup that was previously working, and it sat for a long time during startup saying it was waiting for the network. After it finally started up, an ifconfig showed no IP address for eth0.
How can I fix the broken network?
I've made a script that will set an environment variable to the path in the current Explorer windows when its hotkey is pressed. However, I want this to only trigger if the active window is an Explorer window. This should do it:
#IfWinActive ahk_class ExploreWClass|CabinetWClass
#p::
SetPath()
return
#IfWinActive
But for some reason it isn't. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I want to password-protect a few applications (not just files/folders) on Windows 7, such that, there is no change to the protected application's .exe file itself.
Since the .exe files can't be changed, "Empathy" and "Protect Exe" can't be used as they change the .exe file.
I tried using WinGuard Pro and LockThis! also but they don't work for Microsoft Outlook and some other apps (that I need).
Is it possible at all? Please help.
I have a number of scheduled tasks which simply open a web page in Windows Server 2008 R2. They used to run and end without abending, but now they open and stay open and I have to setup the task to quit them by force before their next scheduled run. I've thought about installing CURL or WGET, but is there a way to do this with R2 without going to that step?
Regards.
I've got a 80Gb hard disk and I want to transfer the system to another 500Gb hd (without to reinstall windows).
What the easy and free way to transfer the system to another hd?
Device manager shows that device is properly installed:
High Definition Audio Device
Device type: Sound, video and game controllers
Manufacter: Microsoft
Location: Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus)
But every program trying to play sound reports that devicce is unavailable. In Windows XP it works properly.
Hello, I am using visual studio 2010 on Windows 7 64bit.
I compiled and ran a simple application basically a thing a child could make. Well the second it started to run, it froze my computer and rendered it unresponsive. It continues to do this every time and for every application.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Hi All, Im on the hunt for a decent FTP client for windows. Im looking for something that works in a similar way to transmit for mac.
Features im looking for ideally would be the ability to synchronize files between local and server, and most interestingly, to mount an ftp server as a seperate drive.
I know i can get individual programs to do each if those, but im looking for an all in one solution... Any ideas?
Is it possible to setup one single machine with Windows 7 x64 OS and somehow make it work as if it's part of a certain domain? So domain controller would be simulated in some way? I would like to avoid VMs and make it actually work on one machine with non server OS.
Is there even a simpler way of doing it?
Why: I have to setup development environment for Sharepoint 2010 and it will make my life much easier if my machine would be part of a domain.
I noticed that if I transfer a few LARGE files between two hard drives, it's pretty speedy around at least 30 MB per second but if I transfer thousands of files less than 5 KB, it is pretty damn too slow.. around 1 to 2 MB per second.
Is there a way to speed up the copy/paste process with thousands of small files on Windows 7?
Where are they? I've seen and used a few, but most of them either look awful or behave badly.
Are there any useful add-ons that you would recommend that work and integrate well into Windows Media Center?
Yes, I could go to the green button and sift through hundreds of add-ons. I'm looking for the cream of the crop.
I'd like to make a backup/image of my machine, so that I may install it if i ever need to.
What I mean by image is a snapshot of all of my programs, settings, files, everything, i think this is referred to as a ghost image.
I want to be able to restore so I do not have to reinstall everything again.
Does the backup/restore utility in Windows Server 2008 R2 do this?
There are times when instead of scrolling vertically in file explorer I accidentally move a folder to within another folder. Great! It happens so quick I don't know which folder was moved and this means I just screwed up an application installation.
Is there a way to undo this operation? Or someway to disable moving of folders by default?
Using Windows 7.
RE:
Putting this out there in case someone else runs into this issue. The intel chipset is on-board. I discovered the reason for the crappy resolution in windows 7 was that the memory to share with the video card was set to 1MB in the BIOS. I changed this to 8MB (the maximum) and then the PC rebooted I was able to select a higher resolution.

Nick,
Does this give Aero functionalty ?
After reading this thread I might have sorted out why the CHKDSK-prompt starts.
But the biggest problem is that when it prompts me with Press any key with in 10..0 seconds,
nothing happens until the timer hits 6, then it starts the check even though I've pressed any button (and yet it's 4 seconds left).
This question states the problem as it appears at me, though the answer is wrong.
Why does the actual check start after 6 seconds, and is there any way to disable it from within Windows?
I have a production server with it's cpu's running excessively high. Except in critical circumstances nobody is allowed to logon to servers during non maintenance times. I am looking for an application I can use to look at the processes on the remote server which include CPU % usage. An application like top. Windows native tasklist.exe doesn't show percentage, nor does sysinternals pslist.exe. Suggestions?
