• Socket read() hangs for a while when there is no data to read.

- by janesconference
Hi' I'm writing a simple http port forwarder. I read data from port 80, and pass the data to my lighttpd server, on port 8080. As long as I write() data on the socket on port 8080 (forwarding the request) there's no problem, but when I read() data from that socket (forwarding the response), the last read() hangs a lot (about 1 or 2 seconds) before realizing there's no more data and returning 0. I tried to set the socket to non-blocking, but this doesn't work, as sometimes it returns EWOULDBLOCKING even if there's some data left (lighttpd + cgi can be quite slow). I tried to set a timeout with select(), but, as above, a slow cgi could timeout the socket when there's actually some data to transmit. How would you do?

• Double-tap or two single-taps?

- by Jaka Jancar
What is the time limit for two taps to be considered a double-tap, on the iPhone OS? // Edit: Why is this important? In order to handle single-tap and double-tap differently, Apple's guide says to do performSelector...afterDelay with some 'reasonable' interval on first tap (and cancel it later if the second tap is detected). The problem is that if the interval is too short (0.1), the single tap action will be performed even when double-tapping (if relying only on tapCount, that is). If it's too long (0.8), the user will be waiting unnecessarily for the single-tap to be recognized, when there is no possibility for a double-tap. It has to be exactly the correct number, in order to work optimally, but definitely not smaller, or there's a chance for bugs (simultaneous single-tap and double-tap).

• memory problem with metapost

- by yCalleecharan
Hi, I'm using gnuplot to plot a graph to the mp format and then I'm converting it to eps via the command: mpost --sprologues=3 -soutputtemplate=\"%j-%c.eps\" myfigu.mp But I don't get the eps output; instead I get this message: This is MetaPost, version 1.208 (kpathsea version 3.5.7dev) (mem=mpost 2009.12.12) 6 MAY 2010 23:16 **myfigu.mp (./myfigu.mp ! How do I tweak in order to get more memory. The file from which I'm plotting has two columns of 189,200 values each. These values are of type long double (output from a C program). The text file containing these two column values is about 6 MB. Thanks a lot...

• How to block the UI during asynchronous operations in WPF

- by mcintyre321
We have a WPF app (actually a VSTO WPF app). On certain controls there are multiple elements which, when clicked, load data from a web service and update the UI. Right now, we carry out these web requests synchronously, blocking the UI thread until the response comes back. This prevents the user clicking around the app while the data is loading, potentially putting it into an invalid state to handle the data when it is returned. Of course the app becomes unresponsive if the request takes a long time. Ideally, we'd like to have the cancel button active during this time, but nothing else. Is there a clever way of doing this, or will we have to switch the requests to execute asynchronously using backgroundworker and write something that disables all the controls apart from the cancel button while a request is in progress?

• Placement new in gcc

- by Roman Prikhodchenko
I need to find a workaround for a bug with placement new in g++. I now it was fixed in gcc-4.3 but I have to support versions 4.2 and 4.1. For example, following code compiles with an error "error: no matching function for call to 'operator new(long unsigned int, void*&)" template<class T, template<typename> class Alloc> inline void* type_ctor() { Alloc<T> a; void* p = a.allocate(1); new(p) T; return p; } ..... type_ctor<A, NewAllocator >();

• Count How many lines in a Java String

- by Simon Guo
Need some compact code for counting how many lines in a string. It should be Java Code. And the string is separated by \r or \n will be considered as a separate line. For example, "Hello\nWorld\nThis\nIs\t" should return 4. The prototype is private static int countLines(String str) {...} Can someone provide a compact code? I have solution at here but it is too long, I think. Thank you.

• How to recive more than 65000 bytes in C++ socket using recv()

- by Mr.Cool
I am developing a client server application (TCP) in Linux using C++. I want to send more than 65,000 bytes at the same time. In TCP, the maximum packet size is 65,635 bytes only. How can I send the entire bytes without loss? Following is my code at server side. //Receive the message from client socket if((iByteCount = recv(GetSocketId(), buffer, MAXRECV, MSG_WAITALL)) > 0) { printf("\n Received bytes %d\n", iByteCount); SetReceivedMessage(buffer); return LS_RESULT_OK; } If I use MSG_WAITALL it takes a long time to receive the bytes so how can I set the flag to receive more than 10 lakhs bytes at time.

• Python - converting wide-char strings from a binary file to Python unicode strings...

- by Mikesname
It's been a long day and I'm a bit stumped. I'm reading a binary file that contains lots of wide-char strings and I want to dump these out as Python unicode strings. (To unpack the non-string data I'm using the struct module, but I don't how to do the same with the strings.) For example, reading the word "Series": myfile = open("test.lei", "rb") myfile.seek(44) data = myfile.read(12) # data is now 'S\x00e\x00r\x00i\x00e\x00s\x00' How can I encode that raw wide-char data as a Python string? Edit: I'm using Python 2.6

• How does one programmatically create a topic w/ hornet q ?

- by mP
I have been looking at the org.hornetq.core.server package which seems to have the most interesting low level APIS relating to managing the server. The server session has a few methods labelled something Queue but none include Topic ... ServerSession void createQueue(SimpleString address, SimpleString name, SimpleString filterString, boolean temporary, boolean durable) throws Exception; void deleteQueue(SimpleString name) throws Exception interface QueueFactory Queue createQueue(long persistenceID, final SimpleString address, SimpleString name, Filter filter, boolean durable, boolean temporary); However i could not figure out how to create a topic. Am i missing something is a JMS topic implemented as a queue ?

• jQuery-AJAX to rebind dropdown list to results from stored procedure

- by webworm
I have a dropdown list of peoples names that is quite long. As many as 2,000 names. I would like to make it easier to find the name the user is interested in by limiting the dropdown list to a subset of names at a time. I have done this by creating a series of 26 links (A, B, C ... Z) that call a method in the code behind that populates the dropdown list with only those names starting with the letter the user clicked. This all works well but I would like to be able to use AJAX to accomplish this update of the dropdown list without a page refresh. I would like to use jQuery for the AJAX functionality rather than ASP.NET AJAX. My problem is I am not sure how to execute the stored procedure and then "rebind" the dropdown list with the new dataset via jQuery AJAX. Any suggestions or resources that might provide and example or walk-through? Thank you.

• Connecting to Google app email servers in Python to send from an alias

- by user575228
I'm looking to send many emails via Python and would like to connect to Google's email servers to send it from my company email address (it's for work). I've got working code for sending the email through the old company email ([email protected]) which is our login, but can't figure out how to send it through the alias ([email protected]) we use frequently. Long story short, logging in with my regular Google Apps account won't do and I need to sign in with an alias (nickname) instead. Alternatively, I can sign with the regular account ([email protected]) but send via a different email ([email protected]). Working in python and pretty new to programming, but am a good listener! (It's like this question: Google Apps - Send email from a nickname but in Python).

• WPF Application - Role Management Recommendations

- by David Ward
I have a WPF application with a WCF service layer and a SQL database. I now want to restrict elements of the application so that certain functions are only available to those users with a particular role. For example, you will only be able to navigate to the settings screen if you are an administrator. I would like a user to be a member of 1 or more authorisation groups and each authorisation group to have 1 or more roles associated. A long time ago I used AzMan (Authorisation Manager) to do a similar thing. Does anyone think that there are better approaches? Is AzMan "old news"? Alternatives? Thanks.

• Django: Determining if a user has voted or not

- by TheLizardKing
I have a long list of links that I spit out using the below code, total votes, submitted by, the usual stuff but I am not 100% on how to determine if the currently logged in user has voted on a link or not. I know how to do this from within my view but do I need to alter my below view code or can I make use of the way templates work to determine it? I have read http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1528583/django-vote-up-down-method but I don't quite understand what's going on ( and don't need any ofjavascriptery). Models (snippet): class Link(models.Model): category = models.ForeignKey(Category, blank=False, default=1) user = models.ForeignKey(User) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) modified = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) url = models.URLField(max_length=1024, unique=True, verify_exists=True) name = models.CharField(max_length=512) def __unicode__(self): return u'%s (%s)' % (self.name, self.url) class Vote(models.Model): link = models.ForeignKey(Link) user = models.ForeignKey(User) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) def __unicode__(self): return u'%s vote for %s' % (self.user, self.link) Views (snippet): links = Link.objects.select_related().annotate(votes=Count('vote')).order_by('-created')

• What parameters should I use in a Google Maps URL to go to a lat-lon?

- by xpda
I would like to produce a url for Google Maps that goes to a specific latitude and longitude. Now, I generate a url such as this: http://maps.google.com/maps?z=11&t=k&q=58 41.881N 152 31.324W The resulting map comes up with a round "A" balloon pointer, which seems to point to the nearest named object, and a green arrow, which points to the lat-lon. Sometimes, as in this example, the "A" pointer is centered and is far enough away that you cannot see the pointer to the lat-lon. (Zoom out to see both pointers in this example. The "A" pointer is in the center of Alaska, while the lat-long pointer is on Kodiak Island.) Are there some parameters I can use in the Google Maps URL that will produce a single pointer to a designated lat-lon? (This loads in a separate window. It is not embedded.)

• Shutting down a WPF application from App.xaml.cs

- by Johannes Rössel
I am currently writing a WPF application which does command-line argument handling in App.xaml.cs (which is necessary because the Startup event seems to be the recommended way of getting at those arguments). Based on the arguments I want to exit the program at that point already which, as far as I know, should be done in WPF with Application.Current.Shutdown() or in this case (as I am in the current application object) probably also just this.Shutdown(). The only problem is that this doesn't seem to work right. I've stepped through with the debugger and code after the Shutdown() line still gets executed which leads to errors afterwards in the method, since I expected the application not to live that long. Also the main window (declared in the StartupUri attribute in XAML) still gets loaded. I've checked the documentation of that method and found nothing in the remarks that tell me that I shouldn't use it during Application.Startup or Application at all. So, what is the right way to exit the program at that point, i. e. the Startup event handler in an Application object?

• Create A Java Variable (String) of a specific size (MB's)

- by Bernie Perez
I am trying to benchmark some code. I am sending a String msg over sockets. I want to send 100KB, 2MB, and 10MB String variables. Is there an easy way to create a variable of these sizes? Currently I am doing this. private static String createDataSize(int msgSize) { String data = "a"; while(data.length() < (msgSize*1024)-6) { data += "a"; } return data; } But this takes a very long time. Is there a better way?

• Compiler/Linking Error: Freedup

- by nym
I've been trying to compile a program for hardlinking duplicate files called freedup. I did try to email the author/maintainer of the program, but it's been a long time and I haven't heard anything back from him. I'm trying to compile the program from a cygwin environment using the latest stable versions of gcc (3.4.4-999) and make (3.81-2). I've tried deleting all the object files and running make, but I always get the following error: freedup.o: In function 'main': /home/[user]/freedup-1.5/freedup.c:1791: undefined reference to '_hashed' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: * * * [freedup] Error 1 I did take a look at the source code and saw that the "hashed" function is an inline function (which I didn't think had to be declared outside of the source file... but that's just what I gathered from some preliminary googling). If anyone would be kind enough to try compiling this program in a windows environment and has any luck, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks The direct link for the source files is: http://freedup.org/freedup-1.5-3-src.tgz

• How can I make Ruby rake display the full backtrace on uncaught exception

- by Martinos
As you may know rake swallows the full backtrace on uncaught exception. If I want to have a full backtrace, I need to add the --trace option. I find this very annoying because some of my tasks take long time to run (up to 6 hours), when it crashes I don't have any debugging info. I need to run it again with the --trace. On top of that, the system may not be in the same state as when the error occurred, so it may not show afterward. I always have to add --trace on any tasks. This displasy stuff that I don't want to see when the task is executed. Is there a way to change this default behaviour? (which I don't think is useful at all)

• GQL: I'm storing JSON in the DataStore. All json is getting converted to html entities, how to avoid

- by fmsf
The tittle says most: I'm storing JSON in the DataStore. All json is getting converted to html entities, how can I avoid this? Original I had myJson = db.StringProperty() it complained the json i had was to long and StringProperty had a limit of around 500 chars. Sugesting to use TextProperty instead. It inserted without problems but now myJson looks like this when i fetch it from the database: { "timeUnit": "14", "taskCounter": "0", "dependencyCounter": "0", "tasks": [], "dependencies": []} Any sugestions?

• Servlet request getparameter's performance

- by Bob
Hi, I noticed that my app is very slow sometimes, so I've done some tests. It's a very simple web app. One servlet gets some parameters than stores them. Everything's fine except one thing. It takes too long to get a parameter for the first time. It doesn't matter which parameter I try to get, but for the first time it is very slow. The strange thing is this doesn't happen always. Sometimes getting a parameter for the first time is not slow. My code looks like this request.getParameter("paramName"); request.getParameter("paramName2"); request.getParameter("paramName3"); Getting "paramName" is slow. Getting the others is very fast. By slow I mean : 200-800 millisec By very fast I mean: ~0 millisec (in the code snippet, I didn't write the performance test, but I'm using System.currentTimeMillis())

• HTML list wrapping problem

- by Daniel
I have a HTML list with this style: font-weight: bold; padding: 0px; margin: 0px; list-style-type: none; display: block; width:700px; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap; and the cells have this style: display: inline; and I have spacer cells between each cell with this style: padding-right: 20px; display: inline; My problem is that when the list is too long for its 700 pixels, it wraps. I want this, but I dont want the objects to be on two separate lines. I have tried the CSS white-space property, but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

• Evaluating Django Chained QuerySets Locally

- by jnadro52
Hello All: I am hoping someone can help me out with a quick question I have regarding chaining Django querysets. I am noticing a slow down because I am evaluating many data points in the database to create data trends. I was wondering if there was a way to have the chained filters evaluated locally instead of hitting the database. Here is a (crude) example: pastries = Bakery.objects.filter(productType='pastry') # <--- will obviously always hit DB, when evaluated cannoli = pastries.filter(specificType='cannoli') # <--- can this be evaluated locally instead of hitting the DB when evaluated, as long as pastries was evaluated? I have checked the docs and I do not see anything specifying this, so I guess it's not possible, but I wanted to check with the 'braintrust' first ;-). BTW - I know that I can do this myself by implementing some methods to loop through these datapoints and evaluate the criteria, but there are so many datapoints that my deadline does not permit me manually implementing this. Thanks in advance.

• Why does Perl's Crypt::SSLeay timeout on Intel Mac OS X machines?

- by Joe
A have a Perl cron job that recently started having its HTTPS connections start failing with an error of "500 SSL read timeout". I've tracked that the error is being thrown as part of an alarm in Crypt::SSLeay, but I don't know if this is simply something taking too long to respond. So far, I've adjusted the timeout from the default 30 seconds to 10 minutes and it still times out. I've moved the script to other machines, and those on Intel Mac OS X systems all time out, while those under Linux, or on PPC Mac OS X systems run fine, so I don't think it's changes on the network or remote server. When the process started having problems does not coincide with any software updates or reboots on the machine, and I've contacted the server I'm connecting to, and everyone claims that they haven't changed anything. Does anyone have recommendations on trying to debug HTTPS, or have you ever seen this behavior and give recommendations on something I might've overlooked at that could've caused this problem?

• What problems do you find with this view on domain-driven design?

- by Bozho
I just wrote a long (and messy) blogpost about my view on domain-driven design at present day, with frameworks like spring and hibernate massively in use. I'd ask you to spot any problems with my views on the matter - why this won't work, why it isn't giving the benefits of DDD, why it is not a good idea in general. The blogpost is here (I don't think I need to copy-paste it on SO - if you think I should, tell me). I know the question is subjective, but it is aimed at gathering the most predominant opinions. (I'm tagging Java, since the frameworks discussed are Java frameworks)

• Domain-driven design with Zend

- by mik
This question is a continuation of my previous question here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2122850/zend-models-architecture (big thanks to Bill Karwin). I've made some reading including this article http://weierophinney.net/matthew/archives/202-Model-Infrastructure.html and this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/373054/how-to-properly-create-domain-using-zend-framework Now I understand, what domain driven design is. But examples are still very simple and poor. They are based on one table and one model. Now, my question is: do they use Domain Model Design in real-world PHP projects? I've been looking for some good documentation about this, but I haven't found anything good enough, that explains how to manage several tables and transfer them to Domain Objects. As long as I know, there is Hibernate library, that has this features in Java, but what should I use in PHP (Zend Framework)?
