  • How to remove username from "Me" menu (right near to power button on the top panel)? [closed]

    - by Ivan
Possible Duplicate: How do I replace the MeMenu username with my actual name? My user name takes approximately as long as would 6 icons. I don't need to see my username, I am the only user of my computer. How can I remove it? I use Ubuntu 10.10. UPDATE: The answer found: gconftool -s /system/indicator/me/display --type int 0 UPDATE: Unfortunately the solution doesn't work any more. Now it totally removes the instant messaging menu (including the icon) instead of just removing a name.

  • Ubuntu One isn't syncing in Windows 7

    - by tuxtu
Ubuntu One was working just fine in friend's computer on Windows 7. Problem is that, suddenly it has stopped syncing. I want to share some observation regarding this problem. Hope this could be helpful to solve the problem. If I upload any file directly on web (using browser), the amount of file size (KB/GB) changed in both places, Web dashboard and Ubuntu One control panel on Windows 7, but I can't find the file on PC. "File sync in progress" hangs on the U1 control panel on windows for indefinite time. If I keep any file in the U1 synced folder, that's not available on the PC and the total amount of file size isn't changed anywhere. "File sync in progress" dialogue is always there, since the starting of the PC. User using the PC with administrative previlage. Hope this problem will be solved quickly.

  • Why can't I get into my repositories?

    - by ken1943
Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 by mistake and am having problems with some of my programs. They either don't work or they disappear from view on the screen. The Repositories menu item in Synaptic Packages Manager is a case in point. The computer does nothing when I choose this item. I am locked out of unless I edit /etc/apt/sources.list. The rest of the application seems to work, however. Update Manager just flashes on screen then disappears without doing, as does Printing. How do I downgrade from a higher to a lower level repository? I need to downgrade from 10.10 to 10.04. Each time Ubuntu upgrades to 10.10 evil things happen and the operating system really gets messed up. I really do not want to have to erase and install my operating system all over again if I can help it.

  • Programming language for simple program?

    - by jamherst
I am wondering about which programming languages people see fit to create a program idea that I had. I am looking to create a fairly simple program whose main functions are adding to, managing, and searching through a database of people, all through a polished GUI. It will be for use in the business world, so I think Windows would be the priority, but Mac and Linux support wouldn't be bad. Also, eventually I would like to add the ability for an instance of one program on a computer to interact with other instances on the same network, mainly through the sharing of a database. Most of my experience is in Java, but I don't particularly like the appearance of Java GUIs, so I'm looking for an alternative. I noticed that a lot of people have suggested C++ or C# in similar posts, so what are some of the advantages/disadvantages of one or both if that is your suggestion. Thanks for any help in advance.

  • Programming jobs for a science based degree [on hold]

    - by clairharrison
I am currently in my last year of a Masters in Physics at Uni and I am looking to go into a job that is mainly programming based. As part of my course we have learnt C++, Matlab and as a hobby I taught myself HTML, CSS, JAVA and a bit of JavaScript. After getting to this stage in my degree I've realised that its actually the programming side of Physics that I enjoy most. I've been working on a few Android apps & websites in my spare time but only things that utilize what I know in JAVA, HTML etc. Using Physics in programming is good fun but I don't want to limit myself just to Physics based jobs. I just want to know a few things: What kind of jobs can I apply for that would require the kind of skills I already posses/can work towards possessing in a year Can I compete with graduates who have had a lot more programming in their course for example Computer Science? Are there any specific extra things I need on my CV before I start applying for these jobs?

  • Is there a way to force lubuntu screen resolution?

    - by za1
I have a Dell Inspiron 4000, 900 Mhz Pentium III, 192 MB RAM,10.1 GB disk running Lubuntu 12.04. When I start the computer, and I check the display resolution, Monitor Settings claims that the max resolution is 1024x768. I then connected another monitor I had lying around, rebooted, and now the laptop monitor looks normal, and monitor settings claims that 1280x1024 is the max resolution (it is) and the other monitor doesn't turn on. (black screen) The external monitor is not broken. Is there a way to, without the external monitor, force the laptop monitor resolution to 1280x1024? (The following is another question) - How can you run commands automatically at startup? Specifically "xinput 18 118 0" (without quotes) The first question is important, I can live with typing the second one at every boot. Thanks

  • ubuntu linux updates don't update to latest version, why?

    - by djahma
I'm using ubuntu and any now and then new updates are offered for installation. However I've noticed these updates don't necessarily offer the latest update for any one package, but why? For example, today, under ubuntu 11.04 I'm beeing offered to update the linux kernel from version 2.6.38.12 to 2.6.38.13, but on my secondary computer running xubuntu 11.10 the kernel version is already 3.0!? Other examples are the nautilus package which remains at version 2.32 in ubuntu 11.04 and which is already at version 3.2.1 on xubuntu 11.10, or mono JIT compiler sticking to 2.6.7 in 11.04 but already at 2.10.5 in 11.10. So, does anyone has a clue as to why these updates are updating my system to old versions?

  • Can't install Ubuntu 13.04

    - by Beaker1210
I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 on a Dell Mini 10 that is currently running Qimo. I want to replace the old operating system entirely. When I turn on the computer and boot from the USB stick it brings up a black screen that says: Boot: I have no idea where to go from here. I created the bootable USB stick using Universal USB installer. I've used the same process for installing Ubuntu on other machines in the past have never had this issue. Thanks in advance for the help. :)

  • Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 disabled track pad, brightness, sound on Lenovo Z570

    - by Vizir
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 using Ubuntu's software update. It seemed to go all right, however after the system restarted and booted up Ubuntu 13.10, it began experiencing several problems. Some of them were due to expected conflicts with the updated OS, however right now I cannot figure out why certain hardware functions are now "broken" and how to fix them. As far as I can tell, these are the sound (permanently muted), mic (picks up no sound), brightness (set at maximum brightness regardless of using keyboard shortcuts or moving the screen brightness slider) and trackpad (mouse does not move, however plugged-in USB mouse does) This sounds to me like a driver issue, however I cannot figure out how to re-enable my drivers, re-install them, or whatever I have to do here. This did not happen durring my upgrades from 12.04 to 12.10, or 12.10 to 13.04, so I'm at a total loss as to why this happened this time around. My computer is a Lenovo Z570, dual-booting Ubuntu and Windows 7 from GRUB 2. Windows is working fine as far as I can tell.

  • Internet connection crashes while wifi / lan stay connected

    - by pirad
I am connected to a router by wifi or lan. But every few moments (sometimes seconds, sometimes half an hour) my connection to the internet breaks down. So in one moment I can surf with my firefox and have ping times of 20 ms (wifi) to the google server. And in the next moment I can't open any pages in any browser and the ping shows no new messages first and then "Destination Host Unreachable". This is especially odd as another computer or my smart phone stays connected at the same time to the same network and seems to notice nothing. So I have a problem independend of wifi or lan drivers but with something else. Where should I look for logs that could tell me more information? I can't find some in syslog. Just if I reconnect to the router (wich works for another few moments) there are a lot of informations. But everythin is okay then.

  • Firefox installed on my ubuntu 12.04 machine but I am unable to connect to the internet(Nobody know???)

    - by Chella
every other browser installed is working fine..! except this Firefox. what are the things that I need to check, to make firefox work on my computer. I am a newbie for ubuntu. I tried googling not got enough and clear information. Please help me. Thanks in advance..! This is the error that I am getting just before launching of the application..! Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features.

  • Not your typical Permission Denied Question

    - by Todd
I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 (64 Bit) on my computer. (My hard drive took a powder) Before, I could "mv" files around with the command. Now when I try I get the permission denied message. I also get the message about "man sudo" when I open my terminal. I am pretty sure I did not get that before. Can I add a user/administrator and change something in my orginal admin that I cannot change myself? I am getting really frustrated with this. I do not recall having the same problem before. I tried qksudo nautilus and it appears to run then it sits there with the cursor blinking but does not move.

  • Cloud Fact for Business Managers #3: Where You Data Is, and Who Has Access to It Might Surprise You

    - by yaldahhakim
Written by: David Krauss While data security and operational risk conversations usually happen around the desk of a CCO/CSO (chief compliance and/or security officer), or perhaps the CFO, since business managers are now selecting cloud providers, they need to be able to at least ask some high-level questions on the topic of risk and compliance.  While the report found that 76% of adopters were motivated to adopt cloud apps because of quick access to software, most of these managers found that after they made a purchase decision their access to exciting new capabilities in the cloud could be hindered due to performance and scalability constraints put forth  by their cloud provider.  If you are going to let your business consume their mission critical business applications as a service, then it’s important to understand who is providing those cloud services and what kind of performance you are going to get.  Different types of departments, companies and industries will all have unique requirements so it’s key to take this also into consideration.   Nothing puts a CEO in a bad mood like a public data breach or finding out the company lost money when customers couldn’t buy a product or service because your cloud service provider had a problem.  With 42% of business managers having seen a data security breach in their department associated directly with the use of cloud applications, this is happening more than you think.   We’ve talked about the importance of being able to avoid information silos through a unified cloud approach and platform.  This is also important when keeping your data safe and secure, and a key conversation to have with your cloud provider.  Your customers want to know that their information is protected when they do business with you, just like you want your own company information protected.   This is really hard to do when each line of business is running different cloud application services managed by different cloud providers, all with different processes and controls.   It only adds to the complexity, and the more complex, the more risky and the chance that something will go wrong. What about compliance? Depending on the cloud provider, it can be difficult at best to understand who has access to your data, and were your data is actually stored.  Add to this multiple cloud providers spanning multiple departments and it becomes very problematic when trying to comply with certain industry and country data security regulations.  With 73% of business managers complaining that having cloud data handled externally by one or more cloud vendors makes it hard for their department to be compliant, this is a big time suck for executives and it puts the organization at risk. Is There A Complete, Integrated, Modern Cloud Out there for Business Executives? If you are a business manager looking to drive faster innovation for your business and want a cloud application that your CIO would approve of, I would encourage you take a look at Oracle Cloud.  It’s everything you want from a SaaS based application, but without compromising on functionality and other modern capabilities like embedded business intelligence, social relationship management (for your entire business), and advanced mobile.  And because Oracle Cloud is built and managed by Oracle, you can be confident that your cloud application services are enterprise-grade.  Over 25 Million users and 10 thousands companies around the globe rely on Oracle Cloud application services everyday – maybe your business should too.  For more information, visit cloud.oracle.com. • Ubuntu 12.04 won't boot at all for the first time

    - by user76280
Using http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer So I tried installing Ubuntu for the first time today, and it installed all well, but then it froze at the 'Preparing to run Ubuntu for the first time...' screen. I then proceeded to restart my computer and load Ubuntu from the OS selection screen. My screen completely froze and the picture didn't even come up fully as if my video driver was not installed correctly. Are there any fixes to this problem? Would greatly appreciate it. • Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

    - by picxelplay
Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? Thanks in advance for any advice

  • Is there a repository of game logic algorithms?

    - by New2This
I'm writing my first 2D game, and I'm writing some tracking logic for the computer enemies. Basic follow-the-player tracking was easy, but ineffectual. Too easy to escape. So I'm trying to implement some more sophisticated flanking and other tactics, and (as expected) it's pretty tricky. This is a topic I know nothing about. I'm going to keep trying, but it'd be awesome to have some examples or tips to work off of. Is there any place that has a decent set of pseudocode AI algorithms, or tips or advice on the subject, e.g. for 2D tracking?
