• Laptop loses signal from WiFi router, but mobile phone holds it fine

- by Anton
I have an extremely weird issue with my WiFi router. Both Ubuntu & Windows 7 can connect to it fine, but after 5-10 minutes browser (any one) stops opening pages and tells me it cannot resolve host address. But, at the same time, tools like Skype or BitTorrent work without any issues. I can also browse Internet on my mobile phone connected to the very same router. If I reset router it helps, but after 5-10 minutes I see just the same problem... Ubuntu tells me that WiFi signal is lost (mobile sees it), Windows 7 just won't let me browse anywhere. Can anyone give me a suggestion on this, please? Thanks

• More than one way to skin an Audit

- by BuckWoody
I get asked quite a bit about auditing in SQL Server. By "audit", people mean everything from tracking logins to finding out exactly who ran a particular SELECT statement. In the really early versions of SQL Server, we didn't have a great story for very granular audits, so lots of workarounds were suggested. As time progressed, more and more audit capabilities were added to the product, and in typical database platform fashion, as we added a feature we didn't often take the others away. So now, instead of not having an option to audit actions by users, you might face the opposite problem - too many ways to audit! You can read more about the options you have for tracking users here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc280526(v=SQL.100).aspx In SQL Server 2008, we introduced SQL Server Audit, which uses Extended Events to really get a simple way to implement high-level or granular auditing. You can read more about that here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd392015.aspx As with any feature, you should understand what your needs are first. Auditing isn't "free" in the performance sense, so you need to make sure you're only auditing what you need to. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

• C#–Using a delegate to raise an event from one class to another

- by Bill Osuch
Even though this may be a relatively common task for many people, I’ve had to show it to enough new developers that I figured I’d immortalize it… MSDN says “Events enable a class or object to notify other classes or objects when something of interest occurs. The class that sends (or raises) the event is called the publisher and the classes that receive (or handle) the event are called subscribers.” Any time you add a button to a Windows Form or Web app, you can subscribe to the OnClick event, and you can also create your own event handlers to pass events between classes. Here I’ll show you how to raise an event from a separate class to a console application (or Windows Form). First, create a console app project (you could create a Windows Form, but this is easier for this demo). Add a class file called MyEvent.cs (it doesn’t really need to be a separate file, this is just for clarity) with the following code: public delegate void MyHandler1(object sender, MyEvent e); public class MyEvent : EventArgs { public string message; } Your event can have whatever public properties you like; here we’re just got a single string. Next, add a class file called WorkerDLL.cs; this will simulate the class that would be doing all the work in the project. Add the following code: class WorkerDLL { public event MyHandler1 Event1; public WorkerDLL() { } public void DoWork() { FireEvent("From Worker: Step 1"); FireEvent("From Worker: Step 5"); FireEvent("From Worker: Step 10"); } private void FireEvent(string message) { MyEvent e1 = new MyEvent(); e1.message = message; if (Event1 != null) { Event1(this, e1); } e1 = null; } } Notice that the FireEvent method creates an instance of the MyEvent class and passes it to the Event1 handler (which we’ll create in just a second). Finally, add the following code to Program.cs: static void Main(string[] args) { Program p = new Program(args); } public Program(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("From Console: Creating DLL"); WorkerDLL wd = new WorkerDLL(); Console.WriteLine("From Console: Wiring up event handler"); WireEventHandlers(wd); Console.WriteLine("From Console: Doing the work"); wd.DoWork(); Console.WriteLine("From Console: Done - press any key to finish."); Console.ReadLine(); } private void WireEventHandlers(WorkerDLL wd) { MyHandler1 handler = new MyHandler1(OnHandler1); wd.Event1 += handler; } public void OnHandler1(object sender, MyEvent e) { Console.WriteLine(e.message); } The OnHandler1 method is called any time the event handler “hears” an event matching the specified signature – you could have it log to a file, write to a database, etc. Run the app in debug mode and you should see output like this: You can distinctly see which lines were written by the console application itself (Program.cs) and which were written by the worker class (WorkerDLL.cs). • Summary of changes for each API level?

- by MisterSquonk
As the title says, are there any sources (web pages etc) of summarised changes at each API level? I have an app which I've put out to a small group of beta testers and I already fell foul of Environment.getExternalFilesDir(), which I hadn't noticed was introduced in API Level 8, when a couple of the guys tried it on Android v2.1 devices. The majority of my code should be pretty generic but it would be useful if I could find a condensed/summarised list/table or similar that I can quickly glance over.

• Directory comparison in Meld but ignoring changes that only involve file timestamp?

- by creamcheese
I'm using Meld to compare two directories of source code on Ubuntu. However, because all of the files in one of the directories have been 'touched' so that all of their timestamps were updated, Meld is showing them as different, even though the contents of the files have not changed. But I'm only trying to find files that have different content. I don't see an option to get Meld just to look at changed contents. Any ideas for how to do this in Meld or is there a better GUI directory comparison tool for Ubuntu?

• Chapter One - Concepts/Requirements (The Fundamentals)

- by drsql
So here we are, the starting chapter with the obligatory introductory material that I hope people will read, digest, memorize and really take to heart. I also realize that that is pretty unlikely. In fact, the first two chapters are kind of like that. First I introduce concepts, and in the next chapter I show how to draw pretty pictures of those concepts. Then comes normalization and after that we really start doing some modeling. In this chapter I am going to cover the basic stuff that you...(read more)

• "ODM" - One of the Support team's most valued acronyms

- by graham.mckendry(at)oracle.com
If you submit technical service requests (SRs) through the My Oracle Support portal, you may often see the term "ODM" used in updates from our Support team. ODM is an acronym for "Oracle Diagnostic Methodology", which defines a standard problem solving approach that all of Oracle Support uses for every technical SR. ODM provides a number of benefits to the SRs - both for the Support organization and for the customer - including a consistent approach, higher quality, justified solutions, and ultimately faster resolution. Screenshot: Example of an ODM "Issue Clarification" activity in a service request The Oracle Diagnostic Methodology applies to both categories of technical SRs: Consultative (question-answer topics) and Problem-Solution. There are a few KM Notes that describe the steps of ODM, however to keep things simple (and since those KM Notes appear to be a bit outdated), I'll summarize the ODM stages here as follows: Consultative ODM - Three mandatory stages: ODM Question: Clarification of the customer's exact question. ODM Answer: Thorough answer to the customer's question. ODM Knowledge Content: Reference to new or existing knowledge base content, or explanation why the particular SR does not necessarily require knowledge content. Problem-Solution ODM - Eight mandatory stages: ODM Issue Clarification: Clarification of the reported issue, including the symptoms, the steps to reproduce, and an outline of the business impact ODM Issue Verification: Confirmation of the issue being verified based on proof provided by the customer, such as screenshots, log files, or reproducing the issue during an Oracle Web Conference. ODM Cause Determination: Succinct outline of the root cause of the issue. ODM Cause Justification: Explanation as to why the root cause applies to this particular situation. ODM Proposed Solution(s): Succinct outline of the potential solution(s) to resolve the issue. ODM Proposed Solution(s) Justification: Explanation of why the proposed solution(s) will in fact resolve the issue. ODM Solution Action Plan: Detailed numbered instructions on how to execute the proposed solutions. ODM Knowledge Content: Reference to new or existing knowledge base content, or explanation why the particular SR does not necessarily require knowledge content. During these stages, you may see other optional ODM-related activities such as "ODM Data Collection", "ODM Action Plan", "ODM Research", and "ODM Test Case". Again, these structured tags help ensure a uniform methodology across your SRs. With this knowledge you should be able to develop better predictability of what's coming next in your SRs, as well as what you can do to help expedite the resolution process.

• Passenger 'premature end of script headers' error

- by fatnic
Hi. I really need help debugging an error I'm getting with Passenger on Apache. I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.4 and have Apache, Ruby and Passenger installed. I'm trying to run a simple rack app but keep getting this error in my Apache error.log [Tue Sep 28 05:54:41 2010] [error] [client 86.171.2.82] Premature end of script headers: The error then continues with The backend application (process 25574) did not send a valid HTTP response; instead, it sent nothing at all. It is possible that it has crashed; please check whether there are crashing bugs in this application. *** Exception NoMethodError in PhusionPassenger::Rack::ApplicationSpawner (undefined method `call' for nil:NilClass) (process 25574): I've tried older versions of passenger also but get the same error. • Intermittent apt-get 'no installation candidate' error on fabric deploy

- by jberryman
I'm experiencing a strange issue with a fabric script I'm using to bootstrap a server on EC2. I launch a stock Ubuntu 12.04 AMI, wait for it to start, then proceed with: with settings(host_string="ubuntu@%s" % i.dns_name, connection_attempts=30): sudo('apt-get -qy update') sudo('apt-get -qy install --no-install-recommends mdadm') # don't install postfix #etc... The apt-get update appears to run fine and gives no errors, however (2/3 of the time or so) installing mdadm throws a "no installation candidate" error. When I ssh into the server and run apt-get install mdadm I get the same error. Running apt-get update by hand, then the package installs fine. Any ideas on what might be happening, or ideas for debugging?

• ProFTPD pam_ecryptfs: Error getting passwd

- by Olirav
proftpd: pam_ecryptfs: Error getting passwd info for user [USERNAME] I am getting this error in the syslog nearly every time any user connects via FTP, the user is able to connect and the session seems to continue without a hitch. ProFTPD.log shows no error, this warning only show in the syslog. My VPS is running Ubuntu 11.10 and Proftpd 1.3.4rc2 from the Ubuntu Repo, I have made only a few changes to the config (no weird auth methods). This has been going on for quite a while but I can't quite find the cause. Anyone got any ideas?

• Can gedit on mac be used to edit files over ssh?

- by Dave
I use a linux machine at work and a mac at home. I can ssh from my machine at home to my work machine. But the only editor that I have access to on the command line then is vi, which I don't like. Is there a way to use gedit on my mac to edit files remotely over an ssh connection? This page says that it can be done, but I think that it assumes that you are using gedit on ubuntu. On my mac (os 10.5.8) I don't have the "bookmark" option when I click "connect to server". http://thecodecentral.com/2010/04/02/use-gedit-as-remote-file-editor-via-ftp-and-ssh-ubuntu/comment-page-1#comment-50558

• 3 Root accounts in MySQl database

- by hairbymaurice
Hello, I have managed to get mySQL running under Ubuntu 8.10, I am now diligently trying to secure the database and am adding passwords for the root users. My question: I have a root user under the host "kickseed" with no password set I have no idea what kickseed is as the database is installed under localhost, on searching around i have discovered that this is something to do with the ubuntu OS itself. Is it safe to delete this user account from MySQL or is it used for something by the OS? If i need to keep it should i /can i protect it with a password? Also i have another root account under the host IP 127.0.0.1 again can i delete this? My absolute preference would be to have only one account with root access but i do not want to delete these accounts if they are necessary. Thanks for tolerating a newbie Regards Hairby

• Creating a new variable versus assigning an existing one

- by rwallace
Which is more common, creating a new variable versus assigning an existing variable (field, array element etc - anything that syntactically uses the assignment operator)? The reason I ask is that I'm designing a new language, and wondering which of these two operations should get the shorter syntax. It's not intended to be a pure functional language, or the question wouldn't arise, so I'd ideally like to count usage across large existing code bases in procedural and object-oriented languages like C, C++ and Java, though as far as I can see there isn't an easy way to do this automatically, and going by memory and eyeball, neither is obviously more common than the other.

• What virtualization solution should I try next, after hitting problems w/ VMWare Player in dual-netw

- by Alex R
I have been using VMWare Player 2.5 for a while (Ubuntu guest on Vista host, 32-bit). VMWare had worked great until now but then I hit a brick wall: Due to some reorganization of my home network, the host machine now has to use a wireless connection to reach the Internet, while the printer, fileserver, and other important stuff are attached to a local gigabit hub. I have tried several tricks, such as editing the .vmx file, changing settings in vmnetcfg, etc, but I'm still unable to get the virtual Ubuntu box to connect each of the two virtual NICs to different networks (I did get it to recognize two NICs, but both DHCP'd onto the gigabit LAN). So, I'm ready to dump vmware for something with a little more low-level control of network settings. Virtualization is such a crowded space, I could spend months evaluating every product out there. I'm hoping for a shortcut... Can anyone recommend the best VM for my situation described above? Thanks

• I shrunk the Windows partition, now it says grub rescue on boot

- by user1009013
I have got a machine with dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10, and I wanted to add another OS to that (Jolicloud), so I started the partition manager in Windows and shrunk the Windows partition by about 10 GB (so now I have:Windows;currently empty 10GB;Ubuntu). I shutted down the computer because I was finished. Now when I started my machine again it says error:no such partition. grub rescue> and I can type commands. ls gives (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos4) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (fd0) if that helps

• Streaming audio to headless linux box

- by Ralph
I have a dual boot (Win 7 + Ubuntu) PC connected via wifi with my music collection on a local HDD. I usually use Rhythmbox on Ubuntu or Winamp on Windows to listen to my music but I'll change if I have to. I also have a Raspberry Pi (low power PC running Debian) in the living room that is usually headless and connected via ethernet. The Raspberry Pi is also connected to my living room speakers via an amp. I would like to be able to stream music from my PC over the network to the linux raspberry pi. What software can I use to do this? Some sort of audio client\server?

The transistion is not so simple and it's difficult to find the good person. When we will find this person, what's the best ways to manage him/her to give enough freedom to be happy and productive but have a clean, fast, reuseable, working, ... code ?
