  • Geocoding service for a startup?

    - by Sologoub
    I'm working on an idea for a service that uses geocoded data (lat/lng) form a US address. Google maps API v3 has been awesome, until I read the terms of service and acceptable uses a little closer. The problem is that the terms seem to prohibit use of the maps API for any commercial use where the site is not freely accessibly to the public, such as a subscription based service. The alternative offered is Google Maps API Premier, but at $10,000 per year minimum, it's just not possible at this time. Same goes for services offered by Yahoo! and MS - initial fees are small for enterprises, but for a very early stage startup (not even a finished prototype yet!) it's just not doable. Geocoding process needs to be real-time and volume would be very small - user would enter address at setup time and only update it if needed. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • Best way to store weekly event in MySQL?

    - by mazin k.
    I have a table of weekly events that run on certain days of the week (e.g. MTWTh, MWF, etc.) and run on a certain time (e.g. 8am-5pm). What's the best way to store day of week information in MySQL to make retrieving and working with the data easiest? My CakePHP app is going to need to retrieve all events happening NOW(). For time of day, I would just use TIME. For days of the week, I had considered a 7-bit bitfield, a varchar ("MTWThFr" type deal) for the days of the week, but both of those seem like clunky solutions (the varchar being clunkier). Any suggestions?

  • why arrayfun does NOT improve my struct array operation performance

    - by HaveF
    here is the input data: % @param Landmarks: % Landmarks should be 1*m struct. % m is the number of training set. % Landmark(i).data is a n*2 matrix old function: function Landmarks=CenterOfGravity(Landmarks) % align center of gravity for i=1 : length(Landmarks) Landmarks(i).data=Landmarks(i).data - ones(size(Landmarks(i).data,1),1)... *mean(Landmarks(i).data); end end new function which use arrayfun: function [Landmarks] = center_to_gravity(Landmarks) Landmarks = arrayfun(@(struct_data)... struct('data', struct_data.data - repmat(mean(struct_data.data), [size(struct_data.data, 1), 1]))... ,Landmarks); end %function center_to_gravity when using profiler, I find the usage of time is NOT what I expected: Function Total Time Self Time* CenterOfGravity 0.011s 0.004 s center_to_gravity 0.029s 0.001 s Can someone tell me why? BTW...I can't add "arrayfun" as a new tag for my reputation.

  • What should happen when a reference is deleted?

    - by Apeksha
    I have a vb.net 3.5 application which references a dll (abc.dll, also in .net 3.5) This dll is accessed by the application from time to time. If at anytime during execution, if I delete the dll, I expect the application to throw an error the next time it tries to use a class from the dll. But, this is not the behaviour I see. If I delete the dll before startup, the application throws an error at startup. But not when the dll is deleted after startup. Is this the standard behaviour, or am I doing something wrong? Can I get the app to throw an error if the dll is not found when it tries to use its classes? Thanks in advance.

  • Different behavior for REF CURSOR between Oracle 10g and 11g when unique index present?

    - by wweicker
    Description I have an Oracle stored procedure that has been running for 7 or so years both locally on development instances and on multiple client test and production instances running Oracle 8, then 9, then 10, and recently 11. It has worked consistently until the upgrade to Oracle 11g. Basically, the procedure opens a reference cursor, updates a table then completes. In 10g the cursor will contain the expected results but in 11g the cursor will be empty. No DML or DDL changed after the upgrade to 11g. This behavior is consistent on every 10g or 11g instance I've tried (10.2.0.3, 10.2.0.4, 11.1.0.7, 11.2.0.1 - all running on Windows). The specific code is much more complicated but to explain the issue in somewhat realistic overview: I have some data in a header table and a bunch of child tables that will be output to PDF. The header table has a boolean (NUMBER(1) where 0 is false and 1 is true) column indicating whether that data has been processed yet. The view is limited to only show rows in that have not been processed (the view also joins on some other tables, makes some inline queries and function calls, etc). So at the time when the cursor is opened, the view shows one or more rows, then after the cursor is opened an update statement runs to flip the flag in the header table, a commit is issued, then the procedure completes. On 10g, the cursor opens, it contains the row, then the update statement flips the flag and running the procedure a second time would yield no data. On 11g, the cursor never contains the row, it's as if the cursor does not open until after the update statement runs. I'm concerned that something may have changed in 11g (hopefully a setting that can be configured) that might affect other procedures and other applications. What I'd like to know is whether anyone knows why the behavior is different between the two database versions and whether the issue can be resolved without code changes. Update 1: I managed to track the issue down to a unique constraint. It seems that when the unique constraint is present in 11g the issue is reproducible 100% of the time regardless of whether I'm running the real world code against the actual objects or the following simple example. Update 2: I was able to completely eliminate the view from the equation. I have updated the simple example to show the problem exists even when querying directly against the table. Simple Example CREATE TABLE tbl1 ( col1 VARCHAR2(10), col2 NUMBER(1) ); INSERT INTO tbl1 (col1, col2) VALUES ('TEST1', 0); /* View is no longer required to demonstrate the problem CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW vw1 (col1, col2) AS SELECT col1, col2 FROM tbl1 WHERE col2 = 0; */ CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE pkg1 AS TYPE refWEB_CURSOR IS REF CURSOR; PROCEDURE proc1 (crs OUT refWEB_CURSOR); END pkg1; CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY pkg1 IS PROCEDURE proc1 (crs OUT refWEB_CURSOR) IS BEGIN OPEN crs FOR SELECT col1 FROM tbl1 WHERE col1 = 'TEST1' AND col2 = 0; UPDATE tbl1 SET col2 = 1 WHERE col1 = 'TEST1'; COMMIT; END proc1; END pkg1; Anonymous Block Demo DECLARE crs1 pkg1.refWEB_CURSOR; TYPE rectype1 IS RECORD ( col1 vw1.col1%TYPE ); rec1 rectype1; BEGIN pkg1.proc1 ( crs1 ); DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('begin first test'); LOOP FETCH crs1 INTO rec1; EXIT WHEN crs1%NOTFOUND; DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(rec1.col1); END LOOP; DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('end first test'); END; /* After creating this index, the problem is seen */ CREATE UNIQUE INDEX unique_col1 ON tbl1 (col1); /* Reset data to initial values */ TRUNCATE TABLE tbl1; INSERT INTO tbl1 (col1, col2) VALUES ('TEST1', 0); DECLARE crs1 pkg1.refWEB_CURSOR; TYPE rectype1 IS RECORD ( col1 vw1.col1%TYPE ); rec1 rectype1; BEGIN pkg1.proc1 ( crs1 ); DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('begin second test'); LOOP FETCH crs1 INTO rec1; EXIT WHEN crs1%NOTFOUND; DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE(rec1.col1); END LOOP; DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('end second test'); END; Example of what the output on 10g would be:   begin first test   TEST1   end first test   begin second test   TEST1   end second test Example of what the output on 11g would be:   begin first test   TEST1   end first test   begin second test   end second test Clarification I can't remove the COMMIT because in the real world scenario the procedure is called from a web application. When the data provider on the front end calls the procedure it will issue an implicit COMMIT when disconnecting from the database anyways. So if I remove the COMMIT in the procedure then yes, the anonymous block demo would work but the real world scenario would not because the COMMIT would still happen. Question Why is 11g behaving differently? Is there anything I can do other than re-write the code?

  • Portable way to determine the platform's line separator

    - by Adrian McCarthy
    Different platforms use different line separator schemes (LF, CR-LF, CR, NEL, Unicode LINE SEPARATOR, etc.). C++ (and C) make a lot of this transparent to most programs, by converting '\n' to and from the target platform's native new line encoding. But if your program needs to determine the actual byte sequence used, how could you do it portably? The best method I've come up with is: Write a temporary file in text mode with just '\n' in it, letting the run-time do the translation. Read back the temporary file in binary mode to see the actual bytes. That feels kludgy. Is there a way to do it without temporary files? I tried stringstreams instead, but the run-time doesn't actually translate '\n' in that context (which makes sense). Does the run-time expose this information in some other way?

  • [SCORM 2004] the cmi.total_time parameter does not return anything.

    - by Nephila
    I am programming a SCORM 2004 product. I can update the session_time, it works. I can set the status (passed, failed, etc...) I also can get the cmi.location time. No problems! But I don't succeed atingt get the total time (cmi.total_time). I have tested on 2 LMS: On Ganesha the API.GetValue('cmi.total_time') is an empty string. On Moodle the API.GetValue('cmi.total_time') is just a "P". I do have the correct logs with correct session times. EDIT. I also try on cloud.scorm.com and cmi.total_time returns each time PT0H0M0S.

  • Integrate ClickOnce update in a setup

    - by Erick
    As recent decision in my team we decided to deploy a software we develop for some time now in ClickOnce. Previously it was deployed with a merge module in a setup project. We had in mind to actually deploy the ClickOnce setup/updater in the web server setup. The problem here would not exactly to integrate it but to make sure to limit the human work to integrate it. Normally I guess it would be necessary to "add - file" and select the folder containing the setup.exe + publish.htm + application files + .application, but I fear that for each time we publish a new version to the hard drive we have to update the setup project as well. Would someone have some insight to help that ? (especially to not have to add the program_[version] folder inside application files that is created each time a new publish is done).

  • Is there any reason why someone would want to create an Core Data model programmatically?

    - by mystify
    I wonder in which cases it would be good to make an NSManagedObjectModel completely programmatically, with NSEntityDescription instances and all this stuff. I'm that kind of person who prefers to code programmatically, rejecting Interface Builder. But when it comes to Core Data, I have a hard time figuring out why I should kill my time NOT using the nice Xcode Data Modeler tool. And since data models are stuck to a given state (except when you want to do some ugly migration operations where thinks probably go wrong and users get mad, really mad), I see no big sense in a data model that's made programmatically for the purpose of changing it all the time. Did I miss something?

  • What are the most likely reasons an application would fail on only one of my servers?

    - by Rising Star
    I have several servers to test new code on. I primarily push out asp.NET web applications. Last week, I had an issue where I installed a newly developed web application on three servers. The three servers all run in separate environments. The application worked fine on two of them, but consistently crashed on the third server with each web request. The problem was eventually traced to an in-house developed .dll file being out of date on the third server. I'm certain that this kind of thing happens all the time. However, there are numerous things that could go wrong to cause this kind of behavior. I spent quite a bit of time tracing this problem. I would like to make a list of things to be suspicious of next time this happens? What are the most likely reasons that a web application would crash on one of my servers while identical code runs fine on another server.

  • overview/history of resident memory usage

    - by kapet
    I have a fairly complicated program (Python with SWIG'ed C++ code, long running server) that shows a constantly growing resident memory usage. I've been digging with the usual tools for the leak (valgrind, Pythons gc module, etc.) but to no avail so far. I'm a bit afraid that the actual problem is memory fragmentation within Python and/or libc managed memory. Anyway, my question is more specific right now: Is there a tool to visualize resident memory usage and ideally show how it develops over time? I think the raw data is in /proc/$PID/smaps but I was hoping there's some tool that shows me a nice graph of the amounts used by mmap'ed files vs. anonymous mmap'ed memory vs. heap over time so that it's easier to see (literally) what's changing. I couldn't find anything though. Does anybody know of a ready to use tool that graphs memory usage over space and time in an intuitive way?

  • Incrmenting a Cookies with PHP (Beginner Question)

    - by BandonRandon
    Hello, I have used sessions before but never cookies. I would like to use cookies for two reasons: 1) it's something new to learn 2) I would like to have the cookie expire in an hour or so (i know in the code example it expires in 40 sec) I am trying to write a basic if statement that if($counter=="1") { //do this second } elseif ($counter >="2") { //do this every time after the first and second } else {// this is the first action as counter is zero } Here is the code I'm using to set the cookie: // if cookie doesnt exsist, set the default if(!isset($_COOKIE["counter_cookie"])) { $counter = setcookie("counter_cookie", 0 ,time()+40); } // increment it $counter++; // save it setcookie("counter_cookie", $counter,time()+40); $counter = $_COOKIE["counter_cookie"]; The problem is that the counter will be set from 0 to 1 but won't be set from 1 to 2 and so on. Any help would be great I know this is a really simple stupid question :| Thanks!

  • Twitter and Facebook on iPhone - save sessions across app launches?

    - by lostInTransit
    Hi I am using OAuth for twitter and fb-connect for facebook authentication in my iPhone app. Is it possible to save the user sessions across app launches? i.e. if the user logs in once, the next time they launch the app, we log them in automatically from some state saved the last time the app closed? For Twitter would it work if I just save the auth_token and use it every time the user wants to use twitter from my app? Or do I need to do anything else? I could not get it to work like that so wondering if I was doing something wrong. Thanks.

  • What system does before launching iPhone app's main() function?

    - by Eonil
    My app takes too much time to loading. So I put a NSLog in main() function like this to measure loading time from first: int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { NSLog(@"main"); NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; int retVal = UIApplicationMain(argc, argv, nil, nil); [pool release]; return retVal; } But, the log displayed at really later time. Default.png displayed about 5 seconds, all loading process completed in 1~2 seconds after log appeared. What's happening before executing main() function on iPhone app?

  • Memory leak in C++ program.

    - by lampshade
    What I have is a very crude linked list..THe problem for me is that I am getting a memory leak in the constructor or main. I think it is the constructor. I have not yet deleted the eventName varaible that I have allocated memory for. Could someone help please? :/ (This is not a homework question) class Event { private: char * eventName ; string userEvent; struct node { node(); node * nextByName; const char * eventName; }; node * headByName; public: Event(const char * eventName, const Date &myDate); Event(); virtual ~Event(); void insert(const char * eventName, const Date &myDate, const Time &myTime); void setEvent(); const char * const getEvent() const { return userEvent.c_str(); }; void displayByName(ostream& out) const; }; Event::Event(const char * eventName, const Date &myDate) : eventName(new char[strlen(eventName)+1]), headByName(NULL), userEvent("") { if (eventName) { size_t length = strlen(eventName) +1; strcpy_s(this->eventName, length, eventName); } else eventName = NULL; } Event::Event() : eventName(NULL), userEvent(NULL), headByName(NULL) { } Event::~Event() { node * temp_node = NULL; node * current_node = headByName; while ( current_node ) { temp_node = current_node->nextByName; delete current_node; current_node = temp_node; } } void Event::insert(const char * eventName, const Date &myDate, const Time &myTime) // when we insert we dont care about the time, just the name and the date { node * current_node = new node(); if ( headByName == NULL ) { headByName = current_node; headByName->eventName = eventName; } else { node * search_node = headByName; node * prev_node = NULL; while ( search_node != NULL ) { prev_node = search_node; search_node = search_node->nextByName; } if ( NULL == prev_node ) { headByName = current_node; } else { prev_node->nextByName = current_node; } current_node->nextByName = search_node; current_node->eventName = eventName ; } } void Event::displayByName(ostream& out) const { cout << "Scheduled Events are: " << endl << endl; node * current_node = headByName; while ( current_node ) { (char*)eventName = (char*)current_node->eventName; out << eventName << endl; current_node = current_node->nextByName; } } Event::node::node() : nextByName(NULL), eventName(NULL) { } void Event::setEvent() { cout << "\n\nEnter a new event!   • How to get JSON objects value if it's name contains dots?

    - by manakor
    I have a very simple JSON array (please focus on "points.bean.pointsBase" object): var mydata = {"list": [ {"points.bean.pointsBase": [ {"time": 2000, "caption":"caption text", duration: 5000}, {"time": 6000, "caption":"caption text", duration: 3000} ] } ] }; // Usually we make smth like this to get the value: var smth = mydata.list[0].points.bean.pointsBase[0].time; alert(smth); // should display 2000 But, unfortunately, it does display nothing. When I change "points.bean.pointsBase" to smth without dots in it's name - everything works! However, I can't change this name to anything else without dots, but I need to get a value?! Is there any options to get it?

  • Memory leak with ContextMenuStrip

    - by Dave
    I'm creating a lot of custom controls and adding them to a FlowLayoutPanel. There is also a ContextMenuStrip created and populated at design time. Every time a control is added to the panel it has its ContextMenuStrip property assigned to this menu, so that all controls "share" the same menu. But I noticed when the controls are removed from the panel and disposed of, the memory in use in Task Manager doesn't drop. It rises around 50kB every time a control is created and added to the layout panel. I downloaded the trial of .NET Memory Profiler and it showed there were references to the menu strip hanging around after the controls were disposed. I changed the code to explicitly set the ContextMenuStrip property to null before disposing of the control, and yep, the memory is now released. Why is this? Shouldn't the GC clean up this type of thing?

  • What to do with a big image that's slowing website loading down significantly

    - by Dave
    Hi I'm working on a website that's already been designed by someone else. The designer has used a big image (900x700 100KB) which contains a big logo right across the top, then the background for two columns. This image loads every time a page is loaded as it forms the basis for the website. What should I do with it to improve loading time? I'm considering splitting it up into two or more images, especially the logo on the top. Does splitting up images like that decrease loading time in any significant way? Thanks -edit: Also, all the images are .jpg, would changing this to .gif or .png help anything?

Data in the first column is time in second. From 2nd column onwards, it is wave height elevation which is in meter. I would like to plot the follow: ![alt text][1] on the x axis is time. the left hand side is wave height in m and on the right hand side is the distance between each measurment in a model. inside the graph there are 4 plots, each plot is repersent waveight 1, wave height 2etc at a defined distance related to the right hand side y asix. How would you code this in matlab? I am a begineer, please if you could, it will be very useful to give a bit more explain in your answer! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

My test code is below : <form name="testForm" method="post"> <?php $cnt=0; ?> <input type="submit" name="next" id="next" value="NEXT"/> <?php if(isset($_POST['next'])){ if($cnt< 10){ echo $cnt.' --> '; $cnt++; echo $cnt; } } ?> </form> Only 0 -- 1 is printed, every time... please help!! Thanks

  • c++ std::map question about iterator order

    - by jbu
    Hi all, I am a C++ newbie trying to use a map so I can get constant time lookups for the find() method. The problem is that when I use an iterator to go over the elements in the map, elements do not appear in the same order that they were placed in the map. Without maintaining another data structure, is there a way to achieve in order iteration while still retaining the constant time lookup ability? Please let me know. Thanks, jbu edit: thanks for letting me know map::find() isn't constant time.
