  • SVN marking file production ready

    - by dan.codes
I am kind of new to SVN, I haven't used it in detail basically just checking out trunk and committing then exporting and deploying. I am working on a big project now with several developers and we are looking for the best deployment process. The one thing we are hung up on is the best way to tag, branch and so on. We are used to CVS where all you have to do is commit a file and tag it as production ready and if not that code will not get deployed. I see that SVN handles tagging differently then CVS. I figure I am looking at this and making it overly complex. It seems the only way to work on a project and commit files without it being in the production code is to do it in a branch and then merge those changes when you are ready for it to be deployed. I am assuming you could also be working on other code that should be deployed so you would have to be switching between working copies, because otherwise you are working on a branch that isn't getting mixed in with the trunk or production branch? This process seems overly complex and I was wondering if anyone could give me what you think is the best process for managing this.

  • Cannot Translate to SQL using Select(x => Func(x))

    - by Dan
I'm slowly learning the ins and outs of LINQtoSQL, but this is confusing me. Here is the statement I have: IQueryable<IEvent> events = (from e in db.getEvents() select e).Select(x => SelectEvent(x, null)); What the SelectEvent does can be explained in this answer here. I am not using the .toList() function as I don't want potentially thousands of records brought into memory. public IEvent SelectEvent(SqlServer.Event ev, EventType? type) { // Create an object which implements IEvent // I don't have the code in front of me, so forgive the lack of code } My question is really for the Select() method. I get the "Cannot translate to SQL" error and the Select() is listed in the error message. Clueless on this one :-/.

  • How to dynamically set validation messages on properties with a class validation attribute

    - by Dan
    I'm writing Validation attribute that sits on the class but inspects the properties of the class. I want it to set a validation message on each of the properties it finds to be invalid. How do I do this? This is what I have got so far: [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Class, AllowMultiple = false, Inherited = true)] public class LinkedFieldValidationAttribute : ValidationAttribute { private readonly string[] _properiesToValidate; public LinkedFieldValidationAttribute(params string[] properiesToValidate) { _properiesToValidate = properiesToValidate; } public override bool IsValid(object value) { PropertyDescriptorCollection properties = TypeDescriptor.GetProperties(value); foreach (var propertyName in _properiesToValidate) { var propertyValue = properties.Find(propertyName, false).GetValue(value); //if value is invalid add message from base } //return validity } }

  • Is hardware accelerated CSS3 in Safari 4 & 5 broken, or my CSS and JS?

    - by Dan Forys
Hi all, I've created a somewhat silly site that shows you the expected weather forecast for any city in the World. On webkit based browsers, when the weather is sunny a sun with CSS3 animated rotated sunbeams appears. This works fine on Chrome. An example (sunny, at the moment) page is: http://willitraintoday.co.uk/iceland/reykjavik/ However, when viewed in Safari 4 or 5 on Mac Snow Leopard, when the sun appears the sky background appears over it. Weirder still, as the cloud containing the advert moves across the sky, it squashes the main text. When the cloud reaches the left edge, the text appears wider than normal and starts squashing down again. I've tried: - Disabling the CSS3 animation; it works fine in Safari - Juggling the z-index of various elements; to no avail Is there something up with my Javascript or CSS, or is the hardware accelerated snow leopard Safari broken in this case? It seems not to happen in Safari 4 on Leopard, but I don't have Leopard any more to test myself. Grateful for any opinions!

  • Installer/packager for a Java application for Ubuntu and SuSE

    - by Dan
I have a Java application complied to a collection of jars that I want to make installable on Ubuntu and SuSE. I Want the installer to be able to check for the JRE, register a file association and be able to load a website on un-install. I understand Ubuntu and SuSE are based on different architectures, so is there a consistent way to do this? Does anyone have an advice on utilities to use or guides to read to help me achieve what I'm trying to do.

  • Anyone have any experience using Actinic?

    - by Dan
Hi, I'm helping a friend transfer a site to a new server who uses Actinic to run a small catalogue of items. I've transferred the files over to the new server, but I need to change a few configuration settings for Actinic, as the old server stored files in /public_html But the new one uses /httpdocs Does anyone know which files I need to edit to do this? I can't get in touch with my friend at the moment as he is on holiday. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

  • Have you read any ASP.NET MVC 2.0 book?

    - by Dan Dumitru
I'm sorry for asking yet another "best [insert-technology] book". I know a bit of MVC, I want to start a project in MVC 2 and a good book would be really helpful. Usually, after a while, people come to a consensus what are the top 2-3 books for learning a given technology. Have you read any ASP.NET MVC 2.0 book? If so, how was it?

  • Enable debugging in Design mode in VS

    - by Dan Tao
Is there any way to enable debugging from within the Windows Forms Designer in Visual Studio (any version, up to and including 2010)? What I mean is, say I have some custom user control, and this control has certain validation that it performs when I set a particular property. I'd like to be able to set a breakpoint somewhere within that code, and step through it to see what happens when I set the property from the designer.

  • How can I get an IObservable<T> in Rx from a "non-standard" event?

    - by Dan Tao
Here's what I mean. Suppose I'm working with an API that exposes events, but these events do not follow the standard EventHandler or EventHandler<TEventArgs> signature. One event might look like this, for instance: Public Event Update(ByVal sender As BaseSubscription, ByVal e As BaseEvent) Now, typically, if I want to get an IObservable<TEventArgs> from an event, I can just do this: Dim updates = Observable.FromEvent(Of UpdateEventArgs)( _ target:=updateSource, _ eventName:="Update" _ ) But this doesn't work, because the Update event is not an EventHandler<UpdateEventArgs> -- in fact, there is no UpdateEventArgs -- it's basically just its own thing. Obviously, I could define my own class deriving from EventArgs (i.e., UpdateEventArgs), write another class to wrap the object providing the Update event, give the wrapper class its own Update event that is an EventHandler<UpdateEventArgs>, and get an IObservable<UpdateEventArgs> from that. But that's an annoying amount of work. Is there some way to create an IObservable<[something]> from a "non-standard" event like this, or am I out of luck?

  • Negative zero using Crystal Report ToText()

    - by Dan Ward
Using Crystal Reports 8.5 on Windows Vista or 7, I'm using the ToText function to report a value: totext(Sum ({ap121w7.yrentamt}, {@type1099})*100,"000000000000000000") The result (if yrentamt is 0) is -000000000000000000 The dash (I assume it's a negative sign) is unneccessary and unwanted in my report. Is this a bug, or is there an easy solution? --Note-- I would very much like to avoid the following: if {ap121w7.yrentamt}=0.00 then yrentamt := "000000000000" else yrentamt := totext({ap121w7.yrentamt}*100,"000000000000"); I have about 100 files to fix with multiple formulas per file, and the above solution doesn't seem to work consistently either.

  • Setting String as Image Source in C#

    - by Dan
UPDATE: Okay I've changed my code to this: if (appSettings.Contains("image")) { Uri uri = new Uri( (string)appSettings["image"] + ".jpg", UriKind.Absolute); ImageSource imgSource = new BitmapImage(uri); myImage.Source = imgSource; } else { Uri uriDefault = new Uri("default.jpg", UriKind.Absolute); ImageSource imgSourceDefault = new BitmapImage(uriDefault); myImage.Source = imgSourceDefault; } But now I get "Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined". Well I've looked up several methods to fix this in my Windows Phone 7 app but I can't seem to find anything that works. What confuses me is that I've done something just like this before with no problem, so I'm not sure why it's not working. The code causing me the problem is this: if (appSettings.Contains("image")) { myImage.Source = (string)appSettings["image"]; } else { myImage.Source = "default.jpg"; } The error I get is this "Cannot implicitly convert type 'string' to 'System.Windows.Media.ImageSource". The reason this confuses me is because I did this Twitter app tutorial: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/03/18/building-a-windows-phone-7-twitter-application-using-silverlight.aspx , in which you bind the image source directly to a string. So what can I do to remedy this?

  • Generating an Excel file in ASP.NET

    - by Dan Coates
I am about to add a section to an ASP.NET app (VB.NET codebehind) that will allow a user to get data returned to them as an Excel file, which I will generate based on database data. While there are several ways of doing this, each has its own drawbacks. How would you return the data? I'm looking for something that's as clean and straightforward as possible.

  • Core Data: migrating entities with self-referential properties

    - by Dan
My Core Data model contains an entity, Shape, that has two self-referential relationships, which means four properties. One pair is a one-to-many relationship (Shape.containedBy <- Shape.contains) and the another is a many-to-many relationship (Shape.nextShapes <<- Shape.previousShapes). It all works perfectly in the application, so I don't think self-referencing relationships is a problem in general. However, when it comes to migrating the model to a new version, then Xcode fails to compile the automatically generated mapping model, with this error message: 2009-10-30 17:10:09.387 mapc[18619:607] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: 'Unable to parse the format string "FUNCTION($manager ,'destinationInstancesForSourceRelationshipNamed:sourceInstances:' , 'contains' , $source.contains) == 1"' *** Call stack at first throw: ( 0 CoreFoundation 0x00007fff80d735a4 __exceptionPreprocess + 180 1 libobjc.A.dylib 0x00007fff83f0a313 objc_exception_throw + 45 2 Foundation 0x00007fff819bc8d4 _qfqp2_performParsing + 8412 3 Foundation 0x00007fff819ba79d +[NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:arguments:] + 59 4 Foundation 0x00007fff81a482ef +[NSExpression expressionWithFormat:arguments:] + 68 5 Foundation 0x00007fff81a48843 +[NSExpression expressionWithFormat:] + 155 6 XDBase 0x0000000100038e94 -[XDDevRelationshipMapping valueExpressionAsString] + 260 7 XDBase 0x000000010003ae5c -[XDMappingCompilerSupport generateCompileResultForMappingModel:] + 2828 8 XDBase 0x000000010003b135 -[XDMappingCompilerSupport compileSourcePath:options:] + 309 9 mapc 0x0000000100001a1c 0x0 + 4294973980 10 mapc 0x0000000100001794 0x0 + 4294973332 ) terminate called after throwing an instance of 'NSException' Command /Developer/usr/bin/mapc failed with exit code 6 The 'contains' is the name of one of the self-referential properties. Anyway, the really big problem is that I can't even look at this Mapping Property as Xcode crashes as soon as I select the entity mapping when viewing the mapping model. So I'm a bit lost really where to go from here. I really can't remove the self-referential properties, so I'm thinking I've got manually create a mapping model that compiles? Any ideas? Cheers

  • Doctrine - get the offset of an object in a collection (implementing an infinite scroll)

    - by dan
I am using Doctrine and trying to implement an infinite scroll on a collection of notes displayed on the user's browser. The application is very dynamic, therefore when the user submits a new note, the note is added to the top of the collection straightaway, besides being sent (and stored) to the server. Which is why I can't use a traditional pagination method, where you just send the page number to the server and the server will figure out the offset and the number of results from that. To give you an example of what I mean, imagine there are 20 notes displayed, then the user adds 2 more notes, therefore there are 22 notes displayed. If I simply requests "page 2", the first 2 items of that page will be the last two items of the page currently displayed to the user. Which is why I am after a more sophisticated method, which is the one I am about to explain. Please consider the following code, which is part of the server code serving an AJAX request for more notes: // $lastNoteDisplayedId is coming from the AJAX request $lastNoteDisplayed = $repository->findBy($lastNoteDisplayedId); $allNotes = $repository->findBy($filter, array('createdAt' => 'desc')); $offset = getLastNoteDisplayedOffset($allNotes, $lastNoteDisplayedId); // retrieve the page to send back so that it can be appended to the listing $notesPerPage = 30 $notes = $repository->findBy( array(), array('createdAt' => 'desc'), $notesPerPage, $offset ); $response = json_encode($notes); return $response; Basically I would need to write the method getLastNoteDisplayedOffset, that given the whole set of notes and one particoular note, it can give me its offset, so that I can use it for the pagination of the previous Doctrine statement. I know probably a possible implementation would be: getLastNoteDisplayedOffset($allNotes, $lastNoteDisplayedId) { $i = 0; foreach ($allNotes as $note) { if ($note->getId() === $lastNoteDisplayedId->getId()) { break; } $i++; } return $i; } I would prefer not to loop through all notes because performance is an important factor. I was wondering if Doctrine has got a method itself or if you can suggest a different approach.

  • Javascript/jQuery: programmatically follow a link

    - by Dan
In Javascript code, I would like to programmatically cause the browser to follow a link that's on my page. Simple case: <a id="foo" href="mailto:[email protected]">something</a> function goToBar() { $('#foo').trigger('follow'); } This is hypothetical as it doesn't actually work. And no, triggering click doesn't do it. I am aware of window.location and window.open but these differ from native link-following in some ways that matter to me: a) in the presence of a <base /> element, and b) in the case of mailto URLs. The latter in particular is significant. In Firefox at least, calling window.location.href = "mailto:[email protected]" causes the window's unload handlers to fire, whereas simply clicking a mailto link does not, as far as I can tell. I'm looking for a way to trigger the browser's default handling of links, from Javascript code. Does such a mechanism exist? Toolkit-specific answers also welcome (especially for Gecko).

  • Typical text encoding and EOL behavior on mobile devices

    - by Dan W
Typical things to worry about when dealing with text are the BOM/signature, encoding, and the end of line (EOL) char/chars. I know that Windows often favours \r\n (CR+LF) and Mac/Linux favours \n (LF), but how about popular mobile devices such as the iPhone and Android? Do typical apps on those platforms favour one or the other (or maybe even \r for iOS)? I'll supply both types to the user just in case, but I'd like to choose one as default. Also, which text encodings are mobiles most likely to use - UTF-8, iso-8859-1, Windows 1252 (or other default codepage) or maybe even UTF-16? And if they use UTF-8/16, are they likely to need (or require not having) a BOM/signature? What is the typical behavior here? Once again, I'll supply a range of encodings to the user just in case, but I'd like to prioritize or use certain encodings as default if it's appropriate.

  • Using Geo APIs to pick a random town from anywhere in the world

    - by Dan Forys
Hi all, I'm trying to use Yahoo's excellent GeoPlanet API: http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/guide/api-reference.html I would like to pick a random town from anywhere in the world but can't see an easy way to do it. I have tried querying by country and asking for children of type 'town', but can't seem to do that directly. Can anyone think of a way to pluck out a random town WOEID without having to query the country, then the admin regions, then the admin 2, then the admin 3 etc. I have also experimented using YQL, but don't have enough of an understanding about the available APIs.

  • Assign multiple Emacs keybindings to a single command?

    - by Dan
I'm giving ErgoEmacs mode a try to see if I can use Emacs more comfortably. Some of its keybindings are fairly intuitive, but in many cases I don't want to outright replace the defaults. For example, in the context of ErgoEmacs' navigation shortcut structure, M-h makes sense as a replacement for C-a--but I want to be able to use both, not just M-h. I tried simply duplicating the commands: ;; Move to beginning/ending of line (defconst ergoemacs-move-beginning-of-line-key (kbd "C-a")) ; original (defconst ergoemacs-move-end-of-line-key (kbd "C-e")) ; original (defconst ergoemacs-move-beginning-of-line-key (kbd "M-h")) ; ergoemacs (defconst ergoemacs-move-end-of-line-key (kbd "M-H")) ; ergoemacs But Emacs simply overwrites the first keybinding with the second. What's the best way to address this?

  • How do you pipe output from a Ruby script to 'head' without getting a broken pipe error

    - by dan
I have a simple Ruby script that looks like this require 'csv' while line = STDIN.gets array = CSV.parse_line(line) puts array[2] end But when I try using this script in a Unix pipeline like this, I get 10 lines of output, followed by an error: ruby lib/myscript.rb < data.csv | head 12080450 12080451 12080517 12081046 12081048 12081050 12081051 12081052 12081054 lib/myscript.rb:4:in `write': Broken pipe - <STDOUT> (Errno::EPIPE) Is there a way to write the Ruby script in a way that prevents the broken pipe exception from being raised?
