  • Extending home network using multiple access point originating from another access point

    - by cyberjar09
I have a home network with the current setup (RJ45 running from main router to access point) : +-------------+ +--------------+ | 192.168.2.1 | |192.168.2.2 | | router +--------------->access point 1| +-----^-------+ +--------------+ | | +-----+--------+ | 192.168.1.1 | | modem | +-----^--------+ | | | | +--+--+ | ISP | +-----+ However I would like to extend the network to two more floors in the house via the existing Access Point (router is too far and not reachable using a network cable, hence I need to extend using current access point). Please see diagram below : +-------------+ +--------------+ +----------------+ | 192.168.2.1 | |192.168.2.2 | | 192.168.2.3 | | router +--------------->access point 1+----------> access point 2 | +-----^-------+ +--------+-----+ +----------------+ | | | | +-----+--------+ | | 192.168.1.1 | | | modem | | +-----^--------+ | +----------------+ | +----------------> 192.168.2.4 | | | access point 3 | | +----------------+ | +--+--+ | ISP | +-----+ Q1 : is this setup possible? Q2 : if possible, will I have to do anything different from what I did to setup access point 1? edit 1 : I am trying to study the dd-wrt documentation to see which would be the correct mode of operation for me Linking Routers but Im confused because I dont see any info on how to use an existing Access point to extend the signal of the SSID. If anyone could point me to the correct wiki for how I should setup AP2 and AP3 based on AP1, it would be very helpful. For AP1, I did the following Use static IP and setup same SSID as primary wireless router use same security as primary wireless router make AP1 point to 192.168.2.1 (primary router) for DHCP Thanks in advance.

  • Handbrake --stop-at parameter not working as intended

    - by KG
Hey all, I run the following from command line: handbrakeCLI.exe -i SourceFile.mkv -o OutputFile.mkv --stop-at 120 According to the CLIGuide you can supply the --stop-at value as seconds (which is what I want, stop encoding 120 seconds into the file). My purpose for this is to quickly create a very high quality video clip from a full movie for testing other encoding processes. However, when I view my output file it is the entire movie. Any ideas?

  • How to connect 2 routers (Asmax and D-link) RJ11 vs RJ45 issue

    - by piobyz
I just bought a new router, D-link DSL 2641B and want to connect it to another one, provided by my ISP, Asmax AR 804MP. Previously, I had Linksys WRT350N, and there was no problem, while I had Ethernet cable plugged in to one of LAN ports in Asmax and INTERNET(RJ45) port in Linksys, connection used PPPoE protocol -- worked OK. D-link has DSL(RJ11) port (which I don't want to use as Asmax replacement, while there is a separate Ethernet cable with a TV plugged to Asmax, which I don't want to configure from scratch on D-link). How should I connect my new D-link to work with Asmax? Via DSL port? Via one of the LAN ports (in which case I probably should change the purpose of this port in the config, I guess?). I tried connecting D-link both ways: LAN(ASMAX) to LAN(DLINK) LAN(ASMAX) to DSL(DLINK) (using RJ11 - RJ45 cable) I hope there is some setting in the DLINK's config that I overlooked. I haven't tried to see what's in ASMAX's config, but I guess I don't need to change anything there, while Linksys worked just fine? The only difference I see, is that D-link has RJ11 DSL port as WAN, and Linksys has RJ45 (called by them INTERNET) as a main WAN port.

  • Using schtasks in interactive mode

    - by CFP
Hello! I'd like to create a scheduled task from the command line, in interactive mode. The at hh:mm /interactive program command fails, stating that security policies do not allow interactive execution. I'd therefore like to use the schtasks command. But when I type something like schtasks /Create /TN MyTask /SC DAILY /ST "13:10" /TR "notepad.exe" /V1 /F I get a message asking for my password, although I haven't set a password for my session. And when I leave the field blank, the command line answers that the task won't be able to run. How can I fix this problem? And how can I make the task interactive? Using /RU SYSTEM prevents the task from being run in interactive mode. Thanks! CFP.

  • Problem opening files with Gvim and NERDTree on Windows 7

    - by Oscar Duignan
Just installed gvim on windows 7 for the first time, and I'm having a problem opening some files. When I open files (I'm doing this through NERDTree,) vim seems to flash up a cmd window for a few second before closing it (too quickly to make out the contents,) and I end up with a C:/Program folder, and a /Files/vim/vimfiles/doc/ in the directory of the file I just opened. I can see it's trying to access C:/Program Files/vim/vimfiles/doc, which is where vim is installed, however it's choking on the space, and I'm not familiar enough with gvim to work out why. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated.

  • Utility to store/cache all web pages and YouTube videos

    - by jonathanconway
I found myself in the following situation. I'm travelling abroad with my laptop. I connect to a WiFi point and do a bit of browsing and play a YouTube video or two. Then I disconnect and hop on either a plane or taxi. Now I want to go back to some of the webpages I was browsing before and continue reading them, or watch some more of that YouTube video. Unfortunately it seems like none of these resources are cached, or if they are, I have no idea how to access them. Here's what I'd like: A utility that starts when my computer boots and sits in the background, silently caching all the web pages that I view. Not only that, but also the resources such as YouTube videos. Later, when I re-navigate to a site while disconnected, the browser automatically pulls the pages from my cache rather than giving me a 404 error. Or I can click an icon in the system tray and see a list of all the pages/videos in the cache and view any that I like. I'm sure Internet Explorer had a feature like this at some point, like "Offline Mode" or something. But these days it doesn't seem to work. Even when I select that option I still can't view pages that I'm certain I downloaded before. So has the utility I'm talking about been developed yet?

  • Why do strace/truss sometimes 'fix' stuck processes?

    - by Emmel
Sometimes you have a stuck process that's been stuck for a while, and as soon as you go to poke at it with strace/truss just to see what's going on, it gets magically unstuck and continues to run! So from merely 'observing' these programs have some impact in the running of the stuck programs .. what's happening here? Did strace (I guess via ptrace(2)?) send a signal, causing the program to cease blocking, or such? I've seen this several times -- most recently on Linux RHEL 4 (and a Perl script mucking with processes and doing some network IO in that case), but in a few other contexts as well. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this, as it times to happen ... in times of crisis. But my curiosity remains. :-) Any elucidation appreciated.

  • Thinkpad CPU temperature reaches 100°C after 10 minutes of heavy use

    - by Nicolas Raoul
Less than two years ago, I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad R500. When using the CPU heavily, it sometimes decides to reboot. I am using Linux, and a widget shows me the CPU temperature. The PC usually reboots when the temperature of the first core gets over 100°C Since I switched from Ubuntu 2010.10 32bit to Ubuntu 2011.04 64bit, it crashes much more often. I survive using these techniques: When in the office, I use a laptopcooler. When outside, I underclock to 800 MHz, by doing so it does not get too warm. QUESTION: Is it normal that a Thinkpad crashes if the CPU is at 100% for more than 10 minutes? How can I use the full power of my computer, for instance when showing CPU-hungry business intelligence tools to clients? The computer does not really feel that hot. Maybe the sensor itself is reporting wrong temperatures? Can I tell the BIOS to ignore it?

  • Strange difference in bash behavior across systems

    - by pinkie_d_pie_0228
I have two systems, an Ubuntu computer and an Android tablet. I have built and configured bash for Android to be used in adb, so it's the same version as my Ubuntu bash, and they use mostly the same bashrc and configuration, and the same exact options set by shopt. However, there is a slight difference in that the Android bash behaves as I expect when I I try to tab-complete something using a variable in it, but the Ubuntu bash doesn't. #Android ls $HOME/loc<tab> => ls $HOME/local #As expected Basically, the variable is taken into account when completing. But then #Ubuntu ls $HOME/loc<tab> => ls \$HOME/loc #Undesired behavior. The list of options is as follows, and is the same in both builds of bash. autocd:checkwinsize:cmdhist:expand_aliases:extglob:extquote:force_fignore:histappend:interactive_comments:progcomp:promptvars:sourcepath What can be making the Ubuntu version escape the $ instead of using it for completion as in the Android build? What can I do to make both work the same way? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Windows 7 USB power lose after a few seconds / minutes

    - by Stefan Dunn
My friend's computer has a problem where the USB ports causes problems with the power of some devices connected to the computer. The USB mouse has no problems, however the Wireless Adapter looses power after around 20 seconds of use and USB Flash Drives cause the computer to either freeze, lose power (and become unresponsive) or become disconnected (still shown in Device Manager, but not in My Computer) when trying to transfer any type of file to / from the computer. I have a suspicion it's the Motherboard but could it also be a Software problem? Tried a new case, RAM, CPU and GFX Card which had no effect. The problem occurs on both the Front USB and Back (Motherboard) USB Ports. UPDATE: Tried the USB devices with an Ubuntu Live CD and they work fine, could this mean it's a problem with Windows (x64)?

  • vista winsxs folder eats disk space

    - by Simpzon
My machine has been running Vista Ultimate 64-Bit for about two years now. ServicePacks SP1 and SP2 are installed, too. The system partition has a size of 55 GB, which should be quite comfortable under normal circumstances, but about 40GB (no typo) are used by the Windows-Folder, especially the subfolder winsxs, which takes about 35 GB. I have already uninstalled as many programs as possible and did run compcln.exe, to reduce it, but this only gained 2-3 GB. What can I do to clean up without risking system stability? I'm a software developer and this is my daily work environment, which means - I can't risk to get strange side-effects from blindly deleting stuff. - You can maybe deduce some typical usage patterns from this information. Any suggestions?

  • Chrome is reporting GMail has Invalid Server Certificate, how do I find out who's fiddling with my certs?

  • Detect and monitor changes to MySQL database

    - by Wolfpack'08
I use Drupal, and instead of having to use the formal interface to make small changes to a site all the time, I am wondering if there is a way to determine what modifications Drupal makes to the database so that I can make them manually the next time. For example, if I use Drupal’s interface to add a module to the site, I would like to be able to find out what database entries it changes/adds so that if I want to add another module, I can add or change the file or database entry myself instead of having to go through Druapl. This way, I can have better control over the system as well as gain a greater understanding of how it works underneath. My environment is Windows XP, MySQL latest stable, phpmyadmin.

  • i7 overclocking problem

    - by benwebdev
Hi everyone, I've got an overclocked system that seems to be misbehaving. When trying to boot up from cold the system just hangs and nothing is output to the screen. Fans are on as they should but nothing happens to finish the boot. From here I have to switch it off then on again and the boot completes. If I go into the tweak menu in the BIOS I'm informed that a boot has failed I've been in touch with Overclockers UK support a bit and theres not yet been a solution. We've mainly been tweaking the voltage for the CPU. Any suggestions? I'm new to Overclocking which is why I got a bundle with OCUK. With this issue happening on Cold Boot too its tricky to test as I have to make a change then wait till the next day. My system is here: Intel Core i7 930 2.80Ghz overclocked to 4GHz Gigabyte X58A-UD3R (BIOS Version: FC) 6GB RAM Power Supply - CoolerMaster Silent Pro M series 700W One suggestion made by OCUK was that maybe its the power supply but I'm not sure and dont have a spare - it's brand new and a pretty expensive piece of kit. Any thoughts on this? Other recomendations for Power? thanks Ben

  • Processor speeds on my machine don't live up to manufacturer hype

    - by atch
Why am I not seeing the promised speed claims of processor manufacturers on my computer? Producers of processors claim that their product can perform so many thousands (or millions) of operations per second. And yet on my machine (4GB, 3500hz), the typical program (Word, Visual Studio etc.) takes at least 10 seconds to start. I've formatted my hard drive and ticked all the necessary boxes to optimize my machine and yet I'm not seeing the promised speeds. Say it takes Outlook ten seconds to load. How many millions of operations does it really go through in order to start up?

  • Windows 7 machine, can't connect remotely until after ping

    - by rjohnston
I have a Windows 7 (Home Premium) machine that doubles as a media centre and subversion server. There's a couple of problems with this setup, when connecting to the server from an XP (SP3) machine: Firstly, the machine won't respond to it's machine name until after it's IP address has been pinged. Here's an example: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Ping request could not find host damascus. Please check the name and try again. C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping 192.168.1.17 Pinging 192.168.1.17 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.17: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=128 ... Ping statistics for 192.168.1.17: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>ping damascus Pinging damascus [192.168.1.17] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 192.168.1.17: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128 .... Occasionally, the machine won't respond to pings on it's IP address, it'll just come back with "Request timed out". The svn server is VisualSVN, if that helps... Any ideas?

  • Getting XAMPP to work with multiple version of PHP

    - by Pennf0lio
How can I install XAMPP to work with different versions of PHP? I use XAMPP because some of the scripts are buggy when run in WAMP. I use WAMP because it supports different versions of PHP. But now I would like to streamline it down to just XAMPP so that my web development would be easier to manage. Is it possible to configure XAMPP to work with more than one version of PHP? Or is it something that I have to look for in an alternative solution? Note: I'm running on Windows 7.

These are the parameters under "advanced" button: Authentication Methods: PAP, CHAP, MSCHAP, MSCHAP2, EAP (I also tried "MSCHAP, MSCHAP2") Use MPPE Encryption: yes Crypto: Any Use stateful encryption: no Allow BSD compression: yes Allow Deflate compression: yes Allow TCP header compression: yes Send PPP echo packets: no When I try to connnect it doesn't work and this is what I get in the system log: 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager <info> Starting VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp'... 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp' started (org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp), PID 4931 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.pptp' just appeared, activating connections 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pppd[4932] Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5//nm-pptp-pppd-plugin.so loaded. 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN plugin state changed: 3 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pppd[4932] pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN connection 'MYVPN' (Connect) reply received. 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager SCPlugin-Ifupdown: devices added (path: /sys/devices/virtual/net/ppp0, iface: ppp0) 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena NetworkManager SCPlugin-Ifupdown: device added (path: /sys/devices/virtual/net/ppp0, iface: ppp0): no ifupdown configuration found. 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pppd[4932] Using interface ppp0 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pppd[4932] Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pptp[4934] nm-pptp-service-4931 log[main:pptp.c:314]: The synchronous pptp option is NOT activated 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_rep:pptp_ctrl.c:251]: Sent control packet type is 7 'Outgoing-Call-Request' 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_disp:pptp_ctrl.c:858]: Received Outgoing Call Reply. 2010-04-08 13:53:47 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_disp:pptp_ctrl.c:897]: Outgoing call established (call ID 1, peer's call ID 14800). 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pppd[4932] CHAP authentication succeeded 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pppd[4932] CHAP authentication succeeded 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pppd[4932] LCP terminated by peer 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_disp:pptp_ctrl.c:929]: Call disconnect notification received (call id 14800) 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_disp:pptp_ctrl.c:788]: Received Stop Control Connection Request. 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_rep:pptp_ctrl.c:251]: Sent control packet type is 4 'Stop-Control-Connection-Reply' 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[callmgr_main:pptp_callmgr.c:258]: Closing connection (shutdown) 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_rep:pptp_ctrl.c:251]: Sent control packet type is 12 'Call-Clear-Request' 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[callmgr_main:pptp_callmgr.c:258]: Closing connection (shutdown) 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[ctrlp_rep:pptp_ctrl.c:251]: Sent control packet type is 12 'Call-Clear-Request' 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pptp[4927] nm-pptp-service-4918 log[call_callback:pptp_callmgr.c:79]: Closing connection (call state) 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pppd[4932] Modem hangup 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pppd[4932] Connection terminated. 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN plugin failed: 1 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager SCPlugin-Ifupdown: devices removed (path: /sys/devices/virtual/net/ppp0, iface: ppp0) 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena pppd[4932] Exit. 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN plugin failed: 1 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN plugin state changed: 6 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager <info> VPN plugin state change reason: 0 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager <WARN> connection_state_changed(): Could not process the request because no VPN connection was active. 2010-04-08 13:53:48 pcelena NetworkManager <info> Policy set 'Auto eth0' (eth0) as default for routing and DNS. 2010-04-08 13:54:01 pcelena NetworkManager <debug> [1270727641.001390] ensure_killed(): waiting for vpn service pid 4931 to exit 2010-04-08 13:54:01 pcelena NetworkManager <debug> [1270727641.001479] ensure_killed(): vpn service pid 4931 cleaned up The error that sticks out here is "pppd[4932] LCP terminated by peer". Does anyone has suggestion on what can be the problem and how to make it work?
