• Space in img:s "ALT" attribute good/bad for search engines?

  I am trying to make it easier for search engines to crawl my website, as it is almost 100% dynamic. I have a couple of transparent images which are actually links to sections of my page. I wonder, if I add an "alt" attribute containing space characters to explain the target, will this improve SE rankings etc? For example: <img src="blabla.png" alt="post new classified"> Or will this just result in errors? Ànd, what should I put in the alt attribute if I can't use space? PS: Another different and short question, will javascript-rich content make a page less important to crawlers? Thanks

• Software install failure

  I am getting a "Package Operations Failed" message at the 95% mark of each download. Details show "Reading database" for each 5 percentage segment until Reading database ... 95%dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error aborting: failed in buffer_read(fd): files list for package `gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly' I have tried to download a number of piece of software (most recently PDF Editor) and am getting the same message at the same point in the download. Is there something wrong with my Ubuntu version, a virus or is it the software being downloaded? Using 10.04 LTS. P.S. Same problem when trying to download updates.

• How can I pull data from PeopleSoft on demand?

  I work in IT at a university and I'm working with about 5 different departments to develop a new process for students to apply to a specific school within the university (not the university as a whole). We're using a web-based college application vendor and adding the applicant questions for the school itself to the main university application. Currently the main application feeds into PeopleSoft. The IT staff here is building a new table to hold just our school's applicant data. I want to be able to access that data from PeopleSoft for use in external applications, but our IT staff doesn't really seem to understand what I'm requesting, as they simply tell me I can have access to the PS query tools. The problem is, I don't want to run just ad hoc queries, I want to be able to connect from outside PeopleSoft and show current data within the external app. I am unable to find documentation or get a clear answer to my question. Does PeopleSoft support access via a web services API or anything similar, and does that sound like the right direction for me to take?

• How do you make a bootable usb stick on OSX with a corrupted harddrive`?

  I cant access the desktop because my harddrive is corrupted. Therefore I want to make a bootable USB stick so i can transfer all of my important files to my External HD. Problem is that Im stuck on Step 3 --- http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx . Im not sure of what i should change this to: hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o ~/path/to/target.img ~/path/to/ubuntu.iso It says convert failed - No such file or directory. Obviously the problem is that i dont know the path to the USB, maybe you know how to find out? Please help me. Thanks. ps. Ive downloaded the ubuntu desktop amd64+mac.

  I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu or Linux, but I'm a programmer, and some people told me that you can just go ahead and modify your system. So my question is, how do you go on about that? For instance, If I'm interested in modifying the behavior of the button or the desktop icons, or whatever it is: How do I get the source code? I guess I need the package name and download it. But how can I get the package name? Let's say I want the button package, where do I look to get the package name? is there a list on a website or a help file? Once I modify it, how can I replace the original with the new one? P.S. I had some troubles finding the right tags, feel free to edit them

• Capslock as modifier key for AutoKey

  I want to use Capslock as a modifier key for AutoKey shortcuts, and I've successfully remapped it to its own custom key using the terminal command xmodmap -e 'clear Lock' -e 'keycode 66 = F13'. However, AutoKey seems to only allow the modifiers Ctrl Shift Alt Super when setting shortcuts. As a work-around, could I somehow define the shortcuts within the script itself? Would this even be the most efficient work-around? P.S. I found a relevant page, though I'm not exactly sure how to implement it. P.P.S. I found a cheap way to do this by mapping Capslock to Shift+Alt and then setting all appropriate shortcuts in AutoKey with the modifier Shift+Alt. However, I'd really prefer having Capslock as its own modifier. Any help would be appreciated.

• Googling query from anywhere

  Some times when I am trying out stuff on my terminal, I get some blockade or some error to resolve which I have to copy the error or last message then open my browser and then Google the query. Is it possible for me that I select the message via mouse and when I right click I get a Google it option as I get when I select some text on a browser? PS : I am not asking how to do Google search via terminal or how to browse web via terminal.These were the results I got when I goggled my question. what I want is something more general. Whenever I select a piece of text I should get a "Google me" option with the right click of my mouse(or maybe with pressing of a key or something). I would prefer that the query takes place in a browser and not in a terminal.

• Is there a mouse trail option?

  I have intermittent blindness in my right eye. Windows had a great mouse option that made a trail of cursors behind the one that's functional. It made my mouse easier to see. The control button helps me find my mouse, but I need something to help me track it as it moves. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance! PS: I prefer bash shell installs, copy paste easier then having to read small download link on websites.

• CPU heating up too much and locking the notebook [12.10 32bits]

  I have an AMD A6-3400m. When installing ubuntu 12.10 the CPU gets too hot. When I go to see the cpu usage not see anything unusual. I think she is working at or above the specifications of the cpu. I can not finish the installation because the notebook warms both the system disarms and the cooler is maximum. Do not know if it's just me but I never had a good experience using Linux on AMD. When I used Intel these problems did not happen. What is happening can? Ps: The laptop works perfectly in Windows 7 Home Premium 64. No crashes, no overheat, simply works.

• Juniper setup on 12.04

  I have a laptop with Windows XP and Ubuntu 12.04 (32 bits). Until now, I used Windows XP to connect to a Juniper VPN but now I'd like to try it with Linux. I read the mad scientist walkthrough (including the sun java part) but I can't run the setup. I get the popup that ask me if I'm sure I want to run the applet but then, nothing. mad-scientist says it's probably a C runtime lib problem and suggests to use his script with -nojava but he doesn't say how to install Network Connect in the first place. • The network printer will only print blank pages and will not stop. What should I do?

  I work in a library, so we have a Ricoh printer that is networked between all of us. I just recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 64bit on my desktop and have been trying to set up the printer without success. Ubuntu found the printer immediately and allowed me to set it up. When I hit test print, I get one sheet with writing on it and then it prints blank pages and will not stop until I turn off the printer. I tried printing from a document and I get the same one page with writing and then all the blank pages again. Below is what the page says with writing on it. • I have installed Ubuntu 12.04, now my Windows Vista doesn't boot

  I have a Windows Vista computer. And I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 on it. But now, when I boot my device it doesn't ask me which OS I want to choose, instead it just boots in Ubuntu. Please help me! I don't know what to do... :/ P.S.: I've created a partition with the Ubuntu installer. My hard disk drive is 250 gb (there around) and the partition is 30gb big... P.S.S.: It's very important because is my mom's computer and there are some very important files on it... :(

• Webcam Q&A page with guest "speakers" ideas?

  I want to host one way webcam Q&A's/AMA's and embed it on my sites webpage. I must be able to have specified hosts for these Q&A's connect quickly and easily to the webpage, and read user posted messages (questions) for interaction. I know there are some systems out there, like tinychat, but I'm unaware if there is anything exactly used for what I am looking for. Perhaps requiring a specific account/password before allowing streaming on the page, where I can email the host a password or directions to create an account to begin live streaming. Most of these people doing the question and answers on webcam will have little technical knowledge, so extra cookie points goes to ease of use! Thanks for ideas in advance! • Youtube controls (sound, etc) not functional in full-screen mode: is that normal?

  When playing youtube videos full-screen, I can't mouse-interact with the player controls, except for the slider (only single-clicking on the video works as play/pause, but not double-click, interestingly, so the only way to leave full-screen mode is via Escape). Is this behavior known? What can I do about it? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04, using Google's Chrome browser. P.S. If that matters, some other flash players I've tried also display the same problem, so this may be an issue with Google-supplied Flash plugin. Thanks in advance.

• Resume upgrade to 13.10

  I had 13.04 and started to upgrade to 13.10. But the computer hanged and I rebooted it. I did instructions from How do I resume a release upgrade/update? Now OS launches, but I upgrade is incomplete: there is no panels in Unity (just a background with some files on Desktop). I think that some post-install scripts didn't launch. Please help me with this trouble. P.S. Or how can I completely reinstall unity (with all of the dependencies)? • Wireless hardware is not getting switched on in 12.04

  I have recently installed ubuntu 12.04 in sony vaio VPCEH. And updated all the available updates through update manager. When i switch on the bluetooth/wireless (hardware switch), only the bluetooth is turning on. For wireless, it shows as "hardware disabled". P.S: It was working fine few days before. Suddenly It is not turning on. i just get an answer for this question while googling. just enter the following command in the terminal. • Lubuntu does not render font accurately [closed]

  I'm experiencing a weird bug, which I don't see to be able to track down to anything in particular.... Sometimes, Lubuntu won't display entirely a letter or two of the font used system-wide. I attached a screenshot of the last occurrence of the problem, where the affected letter is t. Any idea on what is causing it? And even better: any idea on how to fix it? PS: My Lubuntu installation is pretty much a stock one. I installed some additional software like "kupfer", "tilda" or "alsamixer"... but - as far as I remember - I did not tweak in any way the LXDE settings...

  my friend loaned me his Acer c720 in order to load ubuntu on it. I have previously liberated my netbook and UMPC with Ubuntu but those where normal windows PCs. I have followed all the steps so far in order to enter developer mode yet at the login screen, when I type ctrl+alt+= (F2) nothing happens. the terminal should open up but it does not. Please help me, my friend bought this craptop but does not have wi-fi thus rendering it useless. P.S. how do you right click without an external mouse?

• It would be nice to gain reputation in AskUbuntu from helping in Ubuntuforums [migrated]

  I know they are different but also they are very related. By implementing a reputation system in UbuntuForums you could harmonize points here and there. This would integrate both communities and avoid those competitive people to isolate from UbuntuForums (no idea the extent of this but I guess there is some of it). There are tons of questions never solved in UbuntuForums and that means people coming to AskUbuntu. That is plainly inefficient. Since there will not be a centralize system (different owners), why not to integrate them? Certainly, beans are not the proper measure to associate with reputation since you gain beans for anything but UbuntuForums could implement a differentiated system where users "like" one answer if solved they problem. Do you think it would be a good idea? PS: Amazing Askubuntu and reputation are tags not created yet!

• What IDE(s) or editor(s) do companies like Google, Apple, IBM, etc. use?

  Even though I have quite some experience in using various tools, I still can't make up my mind whether I prefer using IDE or a simple editor for code editing. Most IDEs I have experienced are written in Java (like Eclipse) which makes them slow and bulky. What's good about them is that it provides lots of tools. On the other hand editors are usually VERY fast. They can also be extended to become more similar to IDEs but usually I don't do that. However, there is Sublime Text 2 which has some basic code completion built-in. My question would be whether most Enterprise companies like Google, Apple, IBM and etc (except Microsoft because they have AMAZING IDE which, I assume, is used by MS developers) force their workers to use IDEs and whether using plain editor with external tools is considered being not professional? P.S. Not talking about cases like Android development where working without IDE barely possible.
