There will be several training videos under a single topic. And there will be several topics under a single software training. Similar to lynda.com but in a small scale. • unable to enter bios

  I have an asus desktop ( amd phenom X6 processor) which was preinstalled with windows 7. I wanted to install ubuntu on it (dual boot) but am unable to do so because of the boot order. So I thought of changing boot order thru bios. But it turns out, if I press any key while the computer is starting, it just doesnt boots. I can see that the keyboard and mouse are booted up. (the lights are on) but the monitor is in standby mode.. I tried tab, f2,f10, delete key. But nothing is working.. Is there a software or other alternate on how can I change boot order ? Thanks

• Compilable modern alternatives to C/C++

  I am considering writing a new software product. Performance will be critical, so I am wary of using an interpreted or language or one that uses a emulation layer (read java). Which leads me to thinking of using C (or C++) however these are both rather long in the tooth. I haven't used either for a long time. I figure in the last 20 years someone should have created something which is reasonably popular and is nice to code in and is complied. What more modern alternatives are there to C for writing high performance code compiled code? edit in response to comments If C++ is a different beast than it was 15 years ago, I would consider it, I guess I had an assumption that it had some inherent problems. Parallelisation would be important, but probably not across multiple machines.

• How do I cross-compile my application for Ubuntu 12.04 armhf architecture on a Ubuntu 12.04 i386 host?

  I have a large application I have written. I can successfully compile the application in the following scenarios: in a native compilation for the i386 host running Ubuntu 12.04 natively on a PandaBoard running Ubuntu 12.04 (this takes a long time) using Qemu and a chroot on the host PC for the armhf PandaBoard target (this takes a very long time) I would like to cross-compile the application on the i386 host to run on a target such as the PandaBoard to complete builds in a timely fashion. So far attempts made using the arm-linux-gnueabihf tool chain in the repositories has produced binaries that do not run correctly. At this stage, I have no plans to package the software. What is the recommended way to achieve a successful cross-compile?

  I believe that in an ideal team, members should have different but complementary abilities. But is that true about software development teams? As an example we are a small team of 5. We almost have the same abilities and interests but with different levels of skills. Regarding such situation I think we don't cover our teammates' weaknesses. Is there any pattern to follow to manage and improve such team? Should I setup a team with different abilities and interests to maximize the performance and productivity? -- EDIT -- Our current team has a specific lifetime. We work together in a per-project manner. In another word we may change the team arrangement for each project depending on the project and developers situation. Actually we've provided a sort of floating situation. In short, we are a network of developers rather than a fixed-size development team.

• Horible lag on Xubuntu media center setup

  I am setting up a media center running Xubuntu 11.10 as a media center. It is using the XFCE desktop enviroment. I have the NVIDIA drivers installed from the Additional Drivers program, and uninstalled all but the esennitial software. The computer is a Dell Dimension 3000. You can view detailed technical specifications here. The graphics card installed is a Geforce 8400 GS. I have installed all updates through Update Manager. What can I do to fix the horrible lag? It makes watching TV impossible.I have uploaded two videos of the lag, here and here. The second one does not have sound because the sound stops playing on some channels that lag a lot. The TV card is a Hauppage 950q USB, and the TV recording program is Kaffiene. Please help me with this, I am trying to do this to show how great Ubuntu is to the rest of the family.

• Should your client be able to view your project management board?

  We're making a bespoke software for our client and use Codebase for our project management. Is it a good idea to let our client view our project management board? The advantages that we thought of are that this would enhance the cooperation between the client and the dev team, following agile practices. He would essentially become part of our team. It would also reduce communication overhead and make sure we're on the same page. The client could track the progression of the system and make suggestions along the way on the user stories. In addition, he could submit bugs or feature requests. The disadvantages that we though of are that some aspects of the board might be too technical to the client. He would suggest changes to the user stories too often and he might view some content that we normally wouldn't want our client to see. For example, when we compromise on technology or functionality, the client might question that and insist on doing things one way or the other.

• Can an object oriented program be seen as a Finite State Machine?

  This might be a philosophical/fundamental question, but I just want to clarify it. In my understanding a Finite State Machine is a way of modeling a system in which the system's output will not only depend on the current inputs, but also the current state of the system. Additionally, as the name suggests it, a finite state machine can be segmented in a finite N number of states with its respective state and behavior. If this is correct, shouldn't every single object with data and function members be a state in our object oriented model, making any object oriented design a finite state machine? If that is not the interpretation of a FSM in object design, what exactly people mean when they implement a FSM in software? am I missing something? Thanks

• Errors when attempting to install vim on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my computer few days back. from then i tried to install few programs through Ubuntu software center but it showed that no internet connection even though i was connected to internet. Then i came to know that vi editor will be required to set the system configuration in which i will be able to save my password and proxy. apart from that i also tried to install the programs through terminal but still same problem occurred as it says this is not a candidate for install. i tried to install Vim using command sudo apt-get instal Vim-nox but it shows that broken package and showed many failures. please help me out of this.... thank you

  You may have noticed that Weblogic Server (WLS) 9.2.X and WLS 10.0.X releases have been removed from the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud. The Delivery Team has been asked to remove or update any product pack or product that embeds WLS 10.3.2 or earlier versions. This is consistent with general Oracle practice of removing old product versions from public distribution systems, and encourages customer usage and adoption of newer product releases such as WLS 10.3.3 or newer.  For the convenience of existing supported customers, a media request SR on My Oracle Support can be entered to obtain any removed media.  Information on how to open such an SR can be found on  MOS Doc ID 1071023.1 . So now we reqister the same issue again in CRM. Unfortunately, the workflow is not as smooth as Github Issues and most developers try to avoid CRM if possible. • Best practices of texture size

  I wanted to know how should I determine a good texture size ? Currently, I always create UV texture that are 1024x1024px but if I create for example, a big house with a 1024px texture size, it will looks pretty bad. So, should I create different texture size (512, 1024, ...) for different mesh size like this ? : or is it better to always do high-resolution texture and then reduce it in the software (ie : increase the LODBias settings in UDK reduce the size of the texture) ? • Unity Desktop not loading and ccsm method not working

  I installed Ubuntu 13.04 x86_64 on my HP Pavillion DV7-6c60us. It installs fine and works until I update. I run the software updater and reboot as it requests after. When my computer comes back on I get the desktop background but the rest of the Unity desktop doesn't load. I've tried the ccsm method and re-enabling but it just de-enables itself. I've also tried installing the gnome desktop but that does nothing for me either. I really want to switch to Ubuntu but this is causing issues. P.S. I've also tried using 12.10 and 12.04 with no dice.

• How to install hardware drivers for my laptop

  Everytime I change the OS I usually format my laptop. It is an HP tx-2 Touchsmart. It has a touchscreen and additional hardware that isn't working (i.e. volume control buttons and the network discovery) If I was on windows I would just download the hardware drivers from the HP website. How do I go about installing the software for the built-in hardware of my laptop? • How can I convince management to deal with technical debt?

  This is a question that I often ask myself when working with developers. I've worked at four companies so far and I've become aware of a lack of attention to keeping code clean and dealing with technical debt that hinders future progress in a software app. For example, the first company I worked for had written a database from scratch rather than use something like MySQL and that created hell for the team when refactoring or extending the application. I've always tried to be honest and clear with my manager when he discusses projections, but management doesn't seem interested in fixing what's already there and it's horrible to see the impact it has on team morale. What are your thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem? What I've seen is people packing up and leaving. The company then becomes a revolving door with developers coming in and out and making the code worse. How do you communicate this to management to get them interested in sorting out technical debt?

  Should a team of system administrators who are on a software development project share a project management tool with the developers or use their own separate one? We use Trac and I see the benefit in sharing since inter-team tasks can be maintained by a single system where there may be cross-over or misfiled bugs (e.g. an apparent bug which turns out to be a server configuration issue or a development cycle which needs a server to be configured before it can start) However sharing could be difficult since many system administration tasks don't coincide with a single development milestone if at all. So should a system administration team use a separate PM Tool or share the same one with the developers? If they should share, then how?

• Uninstall Calibri font, installed from Windows' font directory

  I use e PC with both Ubuntu and Windows-7 OSs. I tried to install the Calibri font for Ubuntu in this way: I did open the calibri.ttf file in the Windows/Fonts directory using Font Viewer and clicked on the Install button. Now I need to disintall that font but I can't. Font Viewer shows me "Calibri Regular" font is installed but does not allow me to disintall it. Font Manager does not show Calibri in the font list. Character Map does not show Calibri in the font list. Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic don't find anything like "calibri". There is no calibri file in those directories: usr/share/fonts usr/local/share/fonts ~/.fonts The font is visible to LibreOffice, Chrome, Firefox.

  Estoy buscando una aplicacion de facturacion (tambien inventario, compras, clientes, proveedores, cuentas, etc) para pequeñas empresas, que se adaptade a las necesidades de Colombia, en google encontre varios ERP como openbravo y adempiere, pero aplicaciones muy grandes y dificiles de manejas, de hecho no puede hacerlas funcionar. Encontre un programa llamado Ubifactura, hecho para facturar en Colomabia, descarge los archivos de codigo fuente en java, pero no tengo ni idea de como ponerlo a funcionar, pues habla de eclipce, de un servsdor CVS, que no tengo ni idea de como poner a funcionar, necesito si alguien me puede ayudar a trabajar con estos archivos java, o me suguieran aplicacion de acuerdo a mis necesidades. La idea es bebeficiar a varias pequeñas empresas de mi pueblo con una aplicacion de estas, ni importa si en entorno windows o ubuntu, la idea es aportarles algo desde el software libre. • Minimum to install for a visual web browser in Ubuntu Server

• Unable to Mount Seagate Array from Iomega

  I am new to Ubuntu so please be kind! My (Windows based) Iomega Storcentre ix2-200 stopped working, with all my business data upon it. Iomega helpfully told me that I should get Fedora, remove the Seagate hard drives and recover the information by connecting via a USB / SATA cable. First I could not get Fedora to load (due to it needing an Internet connection before loading complete) so I got Ubuntu - much easier to load. Software seems fine, and in "Computer" there is an "Array" icon - this is clearly the Seagate hard drive I have connected. It will not, however, Mount. "Unable to mount location, can't mount file". Any help gratefully received! As a slight aside, I can't seem to find "terminal" in this version of Ubuntu?

• Dropbox indicator icon dissapears right after login

  Even though Dropbox's app indicator dissapearing from the tray area seems like a recurrent enough problem, my issue is a litte different. When I login, I can see the app panel populating, and the dropbox icon does indeed appear (config'd as startup application), but after some other icons show up (bluetooth, battery, etc.) it's gone. It's still running though. I'm guessing it's having issues with staying pinned, and I don't know how to start addressing this problem. I have tried many if not all solutions provided here in the forums for the "icon missing" questions. So far: I've whitelisted everything regarding panel Uninstalled-reinstalled (with and without rebooting in between) Overwritten current installation Purged installation from terminal Installed from Software Center and from .deb file batch deleted every "dropbox" ocurrences from terminal (files and folders) and reinstalled Ran sudo apt-get install libappindicator1, it installed, but didn't solve anything I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - 64 bits. Any insight would me much appreciated!
