  • What are the benefits of NoSQL?

    - by geekbrit
    I'm struggling to see how NoSQL brings any advantages to a system, so I'm interested in hearing from people who have chosen to use it, both the reasons they chose NoSQL, and positive and negative experiences in implementation and use. My first impressions are that NoSQL is a product of the availability of very large, very cheap storage; it seems that a million record database could easily have a 100MByte overhead in field labels embedded in the records. This goes against one of my software design instincts - remove redundancy in code and data whenever practical. However, NoSQL is being used with success in large high-traffic systems, so I must be missing something, looking forward to your responses.

  • Main class passes dbConn obj to all its services, I need to change the dbConn for one of its services. - suggestion for design pattern

    - by tech_learner
    There is this main class and there are several services ( which uses db connection to retrieve data ) These services are initialized in the main class db properties are obtained from the property file and then dbconnection is opened by calling a method dbOpen() written in the main class and the resultant connection object is set to the service objects by iterating through the list of services and by calling setConnection method on the service note: that the services are instantiated in the main class and the main class is not a superclass for services. I also need to mention that there is this recycle db connection scenario only main class is aware of. /** connects to DB, optionally recycling existing connection), * throws RuntimeException if unable to connect */ private void connectDb(boolean recycle) { try { if (recycle) { log.status( log.getSB().append("Recycling DB Connection") ); closeDb(); } openDb(); for ( int i = 0 ; i < service.length ; i++ ) { service[i].setConnection(db); } } One of the service needs to use a different database, what is the best design pattern to use?

  • Does facebook store multiple password hashes for each user?

    - by loxxy
    I noticed that Facebook allows multiple variants of my own password : My password as it is. My password with first letter capitalized. My password with all letters capitalized. It is commonly known that passwords are stored as hashes. So my question is, does facebook store multiple hashes for each user? Since the hash of each variant should be completely different... Or am I missing something, here? And there may be more combinations, besides the one I observed as well. This is obviously done to provide a better user experience & they probably have a statistical explanation of people repeating these mistakes. But I could not help but wonder, is it worth to increase so many lookups (in their database) just to help the user type a wrong password? On top of this, they warn about the caps lock (even though they don't seem to care) :

  • Classless tables possible with Datamapper?

    - by barerd
    I have an Item class with the following attributes: itemId,name,weight,volume,price,required_skills,required_items. Since the last two attributes are going to be multivalued, I removed them and create new schemes like: itemID,required_skill (itemID is foreign key, itemID and required_skill is primary key.) Now, I'm confused how to create/use this new table. Here are the options that came to my mind: 1) The relationship between Items and Required_skills is one-to-many, so I may create a RequiredSkill class, which belongs_to Item, which in turn has n RequiredSkills. Then I can do Item.get(1).requiredskills. This sounds most logical to me. 2) Since required_skills may well be thought of as constants (since they resemble rules), I may put them into a hash or gdbm database or another sql table and query from there, which I don't prefer. My question is: is there sth like a modelless table in datamapper, where datamapper is responsible from the creation and integrity of the table and allows me to query it in datamapper way, but does not require a class, like I may do it in sql?

  • Finding "Stuff" In OUM

    - by Dave Burke
    One of the first questions people asked when they start using the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) is “how do I find X ?” Well of course no one is really looking for “X”!! but typically an OUM user might know the Task ID, or part of the Task Name, or maybe they just want to find out if there is any content within OUM that is related to a couple of keys words they have in their mind. Here are three quick tips I give people: 1. Open up one of the OUM Views, then click “Expand All”, and then use your Browser’s search function to locate a key Word. For example, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer: <CTRL> F, then type in a key Word, i.e. Architecture This is fast and easy option to use, but it only searches the current OUM page 2. Use the PDF view of OUM Open up one of the OUM Views, and then click the PDF View button located at the top of the View. Depending on your Browser’s settings, the PDF file will either open up in a new Window, or be saved to your local machine. In either case, once the PDF file is open, you can use the built in PDF search commands to search for key words across a large portion of the OUM Method Pack. This is great option for searching the entire Full Method View of OUM, including linked HTML pages, however the search will not included linked Documents, i.e. Word, Excel. 3. Use your operating systems file index to search for key words This is my favorite option, and one I use virtually every day. I happen to use Windows Search, but you could also use Google Desktop Search, of Finder on a MAC. All you need to do (on a Windows machine) is to make sure your local OUM folder structure is included in the Windows Index. Go to Control Panel, select Indexing Options, and ensure your OUM folder is included in the Index, i.e. C:/METHOD/OM40/OUM_5.6 Once your OUM folders are indexed, just open up Windows Search (or Google Desktop Search) and type in your key worlds, i.e. Unit Testing The reason I use this option the most is because the Search will take place across the entire content of the Indexed folders, included linked files. Happy searching!

  • User input and automated input separation

    - by tpaksu
    I have a MySQL database and an automation script which modifies the data inside once a day. And these columns may have changed by an user manually. What is the best approach to make the system only update the automated data, not the manually edited ones? I mean yes, flagging the cell which is manually edited is one way to do it, but I want to know if there's another way to accomplish this? Just curiosity. BTW, the question is about cell values, not rows.

  • Will a standard CMS on a shared web hosting account work for this?

    - by user1185305
    I have two questions concerning CMS's that I need answered if possible: I need to create a site with a Database. This site will in due time have lots of traffic and many users if things go as planned. Is it better to have the CMS on a shared web hosting account or is it better to have a dedicated server for this? The site I want to create needs to be able to create groups where each group has its own admin. The admin of the group decides the content that each member can view/access. The information of one group can be shared to other groups as well. This means that only the information content is shared but not the group's member data. Should I use a single or multiple databases for this problem? Is this something that can be done using standard CMS systems out there. or should I try to build one myself?

    I'm creating a parameter table in our database. This table will have 1 row with values that are environment specific (production, development, etc). Is there any reason why I should define an index on this table? Update This table is a parameter table which will be used to drive our job queue system. The table will be defined like this: QueuePrm LogLvl integer ShowMs boolean Restart boolean This table will only ever have 1 row. No other table in our system will reference it.

  • How to correctly set the ORACLE_HOME variable on Ubuntu 9.x?

    - by nowarninglabel
    I have the same problem as listed here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/52239/oracle-lost-sysdba-password although I did not lose the password, I entered it twice in the configure script originally, and then when I went to login (localhost:8080/apex, password not accepted. I don't have anything in the database, I just want to install and use Oracle-XE. I have tried apt-get removing it twice and reinstalling, but if I try to run /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure again and I get "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition is already configured" despite the second time removing any folders I could find for Oracle XE. I tried running sqlplus "/ as sysdba" but all I get is: "Error 6 initializing SQL*Plus Message file sp1.msb not found SP2-0750: You may need to set ORACLE_HOME to your Oracle software directory" I tried setting the variable via export. (also tried set). Tried: "export ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/bin/sqlplus" and all the subdirectories of that. Same error every time. What is the ORACLE_HOME supposed to be set to? The only reference I have seen either just say general or say the above up to the version number then "/db_1". I do no thave a db_1. Let me know if need any clarification. Don't understand what I did wrong in this process.

  • Problem with script to add/delete from database

    - by Jason
    Ok - the user enters a product code, price and name using a form - the script then either adds it to the database or deletes it from the database. If the user is trying to delete a product that is not in the database they get a error message. Upon successful adding/deleting they also get a message. However, when I test it - I just get a blank page. Perl doesnt come up with any warnings, syntax errors or anything - says everything is fine... but I still just get a blank page. The script... #!/usr/bin/perl #c09ex5.cgi - saves data to and removes data from a database print "Content-type: text/html\n\n"; use CGI qw(:standard); use SDBM_File; use Fcntl; use strict; #declare variables my ($code, $name, $price, $button, $codes, $names, $prices); #assign values to variables $code = param('Code'); $name = param('Name'); $price = param('Price'); $button = param('Button'); ($code, $name, $price) = format_input(); ($codes, $names, $prices) = ($code, $name, $price); if ($button eq "Save") { add(); } elsif ($button eq "Delete") { remove(); } exit; sub format_input { $codes =~ s/^ +//; $codes =~ s/ +$//; $codes =~ tr/a-z/A-Z/; $codes =~ tr/ //d; $names =~ s/^ +//; $names =~ s/ +$//; $names =~ tr/ //d; $names = uc($names); $prices =~ s/^ +//; $prices =~ s/ +$//; $prices =~ tr/ //d; $prices =~ tr/$//d; } sub add { #declare variable my %candles; #open database, format and add record, close database tie(%candles, "SDBM_File", "candlelist", O_CREAT|O_RDWR, 0666) or die "Error opening candlelist. $!, stopped"; format_vars(); $candles{$codes} = "$names,$prices"; untie(%candles); #create web page print "<HTML>\n"; print "<HEAD><TITLE>Candles Unlimited</TITLE></HEAD>\n"; print "<BODY>\n"; print "<FONT SIZE=4>Thank you, the following product has been added.<BR>\n"; print "Candle: $codes $names $prices</FONT>\n"; print "</BODY></HTML>\n"; } #end add sub remove { #declare variables my (%candles, $msg); tie(%candles, "SDBM_File", "candlelist", O_RDWR, 0) or die "Error opening candlelist. $!, stopped"; format_vars(); #determine if the product is listed if (exists($candles{$codes})) { delete($candles{$codes}); $msg = "The candle $codes $names $prices has been removed."; } else { $msg = "The product you entered is not in the database"; } #close database untie(%candles); #create web page print "<HTML>\n"; print "<HEAD><TITLE>Candles Unlimited</TITLE></HEAD>\n"; print "<BODY>\n"; print "<H1>Candles Unlimited</H1>\n"; print "$msg\n"; print "</BODY></HTML>\n"; }

  • Staging database good practices

    - by Tom
    Hi, I'm about to deploy to production a fairly complex site and for the first time need a staging environment where I can test things in a more realistic environment, especially with regard to some external services that cannot be run locally. My general plan is to develop & test first locally, push simple changes (small bug fixes, HTML/CSS, JS, etc) direct to production, and for larger changes, push first to staging subdomain for thorough testing and then to production. I don't think that I need to keep the staging and production databases in sync (occasional manual updating would do) but I'm wondering if there are any general good practices with regard to maintaing a staging environment in relation to a production environment, especially when it comes to databases. Any general thoughts/advice/experience would be appreciated.

  • McAfee Virus Scan and Oracle RAC

    - by Lee Gathercole
    Hi, We're experiencing a strange problem with Oracle RAC and McAfee anti-virus. As part of the installation of the Oracle RAC we disable anti virus as directed. We have had our RAC running fine, but when we came to re-enable the AV and reboot we got the BSOD. Microsoft talk about too many file filter drivers being present and pushing the DFS upper limit beyond the default size. Upping this value, as per msdn, has no impact. We're able to recover from this BSOD by disabling AV. We don't have the problem if we run the AV service manually whilst the system is up. However, if we make the service automatic we fail to boot. • sqlite no such table

    - by Graham B
    can anyone please help. I've seen many people with the same problem and looked at all suggestions but still cannot get this to work. I have tried to unistall the application and install again, I have tried to change the version number and start again. I've debugged the code and it does go into the onCreate function, but when I go to make a select query it says the users table does not exist. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks guys DatabaseHandler Class public class DatabaseHandler extends SQLiteOpenHelper { // Variables protected static final int DATABASE_VERSION = 1; protected static final String DATABASE_NAME = "MyUser.db"; // Constructor public DatabaseHandler(Context context) { super(context, DATABASE_NAME, null, DATABASE_VERSION); } // Creating Tables @Override public void onCreate(SQLiteDatabase db) { // Create the Users table // NOTE: I have the column variables saved above String CREATE_USERS_TABLE = "CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS Users(" + KEY_PRIMARY_ID + " " + INTEGER + " " + PRIMARY_KEY + " " + AUTO_INCREMENT + " " + NOT_NULL + "," + USERS_KEY_EMAIL + " " + NVARCHAR+"(1000)" + " " + UNIQUE + " " + NOT_NULL + "," + USERS_KEY_PIN + " " + NVARCHAR+"(10)" + " " + NOT_NULL + ")"; db.execSQL(CREATE_USERS_TABLE); } // Upgrading database @Override public void onUpgrade(SQLiteDatabase db, int oldVersion, int newVersion) { db.execSQL("DROP TABLE IF EXISTS Users"); onCreate(db); } UserDataSource class public class UserDataSource { private SQLiteDatabase db; private DatabaseHandler dbHandler; public UserDataSource(Context context) { dbHandler = new DatabaseHandler(context); } public void OpenWriteable() throws SQLException { db = dbHandler.getWritableDatabase(); } public void Close() { dbHandler.close(); } // Validate the user login with the username and password provided public void ValidateLogin(String username, String pin) throws CustomException { Cursor cursor = db.rawQuery( "select * from Users where " + DatabaseHandler.USERS_KEY_EMAIL + " = '" + username + "'" + " and " + DatabaseHandler.USERS_KEY_PIN + " = '" + pin + "'" , null); ........ } Then in the activity class, I'm calling UserDataSource uds = new UserDataSource (this); uds.OpenWriteable(); uds.ValidateLogin("name", "pin"); Any help would be great, thanks very much Graham The following is the attached log from the error report 11-23 17:47:46.414: I/SqliteDatabaseCpp(26717): sqlite returned: error code = 1, msg = no such table: Users, db=/data/data/prometric.myitemwriter/databases/MyUser.db 11-23 17:47:57.085: D/AndroidRuntime(26717): Shutting down VM 11-23 17:47:57.085: W/dalvikvm(26717): threadid=1: thread exiting with uncaught exception (group=0x40bec1f8) 11-23 17:47:57.171: D/dalvikvm(26717): GC_CONCURRENT freed 575K, 8% free 8649K/9351K, paused 2ms+6ms 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): FATAL EXCEPTION: main 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): java.lang.IllegalStateException: Could not execute method of the activity 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.view.View$1.onClick(View.java:3091) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.view.View.performClick(View.java:3558) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.view.View$PerformClick.run(View.java:14152) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.os.Handler.handleCallback(Handler.java:605) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:92) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:137) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4514) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:511) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:790) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:557) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): Caused by: java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:511) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.view.View$1.onClick(View.java:3086) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): ... 11 more 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): Caused by: android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: no such table: Users: , while compiling: select * from Users where email = '' and pin = '' 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteCompiledSql.native_compile(Native Method) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteCompiledSql.<init>(SQLiteCompiledSql.java:68) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteProgram.compileSql(SQLiteProgram.java:143) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteProgram.compileAndbindAllArgs(SQLiteProgram.java:361) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteProgram.<init>(SQLiteProgram.java:127) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteProgram.<init>(SQLiteProgram.java:94) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteQuery.<init>(SQLiteQuery.java:53) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDirectCursorDriver.query(SQLiteDirectCursorDriver.java:47) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.rawQueryWithFactory(SQLiteDatabase.java:1685) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDatabase.rawQuery(SQLiteDatabase.java:1659) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at projectname.database.UserDataSource.ValidateLogin(UserDataSource.java:73) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): at projectname.LoginActivity.btn_login_Click(LoginActivity.java:47) 11-23 17:47:57.179: E/AndroidRuntime(26717): ... 14 more
