  • SQL join: where clause vs. on clause

    - by BCS
After reading it, this is not a duplicate of Explicit vs Implicit SQL Joins. The answer may be related (or even the same) but the question is different. What is the difference and what should go in each? If I understand the theory correctly, the query optimizer should be able to use both interchangeably.

  • Why not use Git?

    - by Tom R
A lot of people like git (in particular this guy) against other SCMs such as SVN, but many projects, even new ones, are set up using alternative SCMs. Furthermore, Google Code still does not support it (although many of their large open source projects use it). My question is: what are the reasons for not using git in any project, whether it be personal or collaborative? Maybe I've just been brainwashed by this guy, but I can't see any area in which other SCMs excel over git.

  • How can I add complete binaries to a Mercurial patch?

    - by David Corley
I want to use Mercurial to capture changes made to the vanilla installation of a piece of software we use. Everytime we upgrade the software, we need to manually edit the various configuration files and add 3rd party libraries that we use in the current version of the software. Creating patches for the configuration files changes are fine, but how do I add 3rd party libraries (binaries) to a Mercurial patch? Is it even possible?

  • Server-side web browser for PHP?

    - by Lee
If you wanted to re-create the DOM server-side and manipulate it in PHP, how would you choose to go about it? I'm looking for a fast, multi-user complete server-side web browser that can interface with PHP and run complete Javascript. Like Jaxer but something I can use with PHP... an extension would be fine, or even an Apache mod. Ideas?

  • Spreadsheet::WriteExcel Memory Usage

    - by Stomped
Hi; I'm trying to create a multi-sheet excel document, and thus far I'd been doing it in PHP - but using PHPExcel was eating up 70MB of RAM for about 60,000 spreadsheet cells total. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with Spreadsheet::WriteExcel and if it has problems with creating very large documents. I'd just give it a shot but I'm very inexperienced with Perl and it could take me quite a bit of time to get this up and rolling even if for a test, and I thought someone here might have insight for me.

  • Where can I find a list of English phrases?

    - by Marcus Adams
I'm tasked with searching for the use of cliches and common phrases in text. The phrases are similar to the phrases you might see for the phrase puzzles on Wheel of Fortune. Here are a few examples: Safety First Too Good To be True Winning Isn't Everything I cannot find a list of phrases however. Does anybody know of such a list? Seriously, even a list of all Wheel of Fortune solutions would suffice.

  • Is simply upvoting the best answers to old questions the best way to get them off the unaswered list

    - by Cade Roux
While the answers might not be the best or the question really doesn't have an answer, if none are upvoted or the person doesn't accept an answer, they sit and sit in the unanswered page. In cases which do have realistic answers, I've been voting up the best. Even if I combine the best answers into a better one, the questioners aren't upvoting, accepting or closing the questions anyway.

  • How can you debug Lego Mindstorms programs?

    - by chris
Is there any way to add any sort of debugging to a Lego Mindstorms program, when using the NXT drag-and-drop environment? It would be nice to be able to monitor the status of the various sensors, but even knowing what step in the program was running would be nice.

  • Google Maps iPhone API Terrain View

    - by Adam
We're using MapKit on an iPhone app to display a Google Map with terrain view. However, the terrain view only shows when the user has an active Internet connection, the moment the user's Internet is off, the terrain on the map disappears and it appears flat. Is there any way to keep the terrain view on even when the user isn't on an active internet connection? Thanks! Adam
