  • How can I compare the performance of log() and fp division in C++?

    - by Ventzi Zhechev
Hi, I’m using a log-based class in C++ to store very small floating-point values (as the values otherwise go beyond the scope of double). As I’m performing a large number of multiplications, this has the added benefit of converting the multiplications to sums. However, at a certain point in my algorithm, I need to divide a standard double value by an integer value and than do a *= to a log-based value. I have overloaded the *= operator for my log-based class and the right-hand side value is first converted to a log-based value by running log() and than added to the left-hand side value. Thus the operations actually performed are floating-point division, log() and floating-point summation. My question whether it would be faster to first convert the denominator to a log-based value, which would replace the floating-point division with floating-point subtraction, yielding the following chain of operations: twice log(), floating-point subtraction, floating-point summation. In the end, this boils down to whether floating-point division is faster or slower than log(). I suspect that a common answer would be that this is compiler and architecture dependent, so I’ll say that I use gcc 4.2 from Apple on darwin 10.3.0. Still, I hope to get an answer with a general remark on the speed of these two operators and/or an idea on how to measure the difference myself, as there might be more going on here, e.g. executing the constructors that do the type conversion etc. Cheers!

  • How to implement the disposable pattern in a class that inherits from another disposable class?

    - by TheRHCP
Hi, I often used the disposable pattern in simple classes that referenced small amount of resources, but I never had to implement this pattern on a class that inherits from another disposable class and I am starting to be a bit confused in how to free the whole resources. I start with a little sample code: public class Tracer : IDisposable { bool disposed; FileStream fileStream; public Tracer() { //Some fileStream initialization } public void Dispose() { this.Dispose(true); GC.SuppressFinalize(this); } protected virtual void Dispose(bool disposing) { if (!disposed) { if (disposing) { if (fileStream != null) { fileStream.Dispose(); } } disposed = true; } } } public class ServiceWrapper : Tracer { bool disposed; ServiceHost serviceHost; //Some properties public ServiceWrapper () { //Some serviceHost initialization } //protected override void Dispose(bool disposing) //{ // if (!disposed) // { // if (disposing) // { // if (serviceHost != null) // { // serviceHost.Close(); // } // } // disposed = true; // } //} } My real question is: how to implement the disposable pattern inside my ServiceWrapper class to be sure that when I will dispose an instance of it, it will dispose resources in both inherited and base class? Thanks.

  • Import Excel into Rails app

    - by Jack
Hi, I am creating a small rails app for personal use and would like to be able to upload excel files to later be validated and added to the database. I had this working previously with csv files, but this has since become impractical. Does anyone know of a tutorial for using the roo or spreadsheet gem to upload the file, display the contents to the user and then add to the database (after validating)? I know this is quite specific, but I want to work through this step by step. All I have so far is an 'import' view: <% form_for :dump, :url=>{:controller=>"students", :action=>"student_import"}, :html => { :multipart => true } do |f| -%> Select an Excel File : <%= f.file_field :excel_file -%> <%= submit_tag 'Submit' -%> <% end -%> But have no idea how to access this uploaded file in the controller. Any suggestions/help would be welcomed. Thanks

  • fastest public web app framework for quick DB apps?

    - by Steve Eisner
I'd like to pick up a new tech for my toolbox - something for rapid prototyping of web apps. Brief requirements: public access (not hosted on my machine) - like Google's appengine, etc no tricky configuration necessary to build a simple web app host DB access (small storage provided) including some kind of SQLish query language easy front end HTML templating ability to access as a JSON service C# or Java,PHP or Python - or a fun new language to learn is OK free! An example app, very simple: render an AJAXy editable (add/delete/edit/drag) list of rich-data list items via some template language, so I can quickly mock up a UI for a client. ie. I can do most of the work client-side, but need convenient back end to handle the permanent storage. (In fact I suppose it doesn't even need HTML templating if I can directly access a DB via AJAX calls.) I realize this is a bit vague but am wondering if anyone has recommendations. A Rails host might be best for this (but probably not free) or maybe App Engine, or some other choice I'm not aware of? I've been doing everything with heavyweight servers (ASP.NET etc) for so long that I'm just not up on the latest... Thanks - I'll follow up on comments if this isn't clear enough :)

  • Automatic adition of `using` in CodeRush.

    - by drasto
I just installed CodeRush Pro (evaluation trial) for Visual Studio and I can say I like it much so far. Comparing to Resharper there is only one type of feature I'm really missing. It is the way CodeRush deals with using. When I type some class name that is not declared in some package listed in using, CodeRush underlines it red as an error(what it is) but if I hover over it with cursor it does not offer me to add using, it merely says it is "Undeclared element". I have to use VS default using addition (move caret to the identifier, hover cursor over that really small box that appears under first letter, click the button that appears and choose for example using System form a drop down menu). Is there a way how to configure CodeRush to offer mi add using when I hover a cursor over highlighted "issue"(that says Undeclared element)? The second part of this is that Resharper has somethink called Type name completion. It some improved intellisense. Lets say you have no using declaration in your file. Then you type something like ICompar and press CTRL+SPACE. Of cause there will be no suggestions. But with Resharper you can press CTRL+ALT+SPACE and you get suggestions of all classes starting with ICompar even if they are not in using. When you choose one of them the correct using is automatically added for you. Is there a way to make CodeRush behave this way ?

  • Hive performance increase

    - by Sagar Nikam
I am dealing with a database (2.5 GB) having some tables only 40 row to some having 9 million rows data. when I am doing any query for large table it takes more time. I want results in less time small query on table which have 90 rows only-- hive> select count(*) from cidade; Time taken: 50.172 seconds hdfs-site.xml <configuration> <property> <name>dfs.replication</name> <value>3</value> <description>Default block replication. The actual number of replications can be specified when the file is created. The default is used if replication is not specified in create time. </description> </property> <property> <name>dfs.block.size</name> <value>131072</value> <description>Default block replication. The actual number of replications can be specified when the file is created. The default is used if replication is not specified in create time. </description> </property> </configuration> does these setting affects performance of hive? dfs.replication=3 dfs.block.size=131072 can i set it from hive prompt as hive>set dfs.replication=5 Is this value remains for a perticular session only ? or Is it better to change it in .xml file ?

  • Time.new does not work as I would expect

    - by Marius Pop
I am trying to generate some seed material. seed_array.each do |seed| Task.create(date: Date.new(2012,06,seed[1]), start_t: Time.new(2012,6,2,seed[2],seed[3]), end_t: Time.new(2012,6,2,seed[2] + 2,seed[3]), title: "#{seed[0]}") end Ultimately I will put random hours, minutes, seconds. The problem that I am facing is that instead of creating a time with the 2012-06-02 date it creates a time with a different date: 2000-01-01. I tested Time.new(2012,6,2,2,20,45) in rails console and it works as expected. When I am trying to seed my database however some voodo magic happens and I don't get the date I want. Any inputs are appreciated. Thank you! • Redirecting http to https for a directory, via .htaccess, using mod_alias only

    - by Belinda
I have the common problem of wanting to redirect requests for a certain restricted access directory from http to https, so that users' login credentials are sent in a secure way. However, I do not have mod_rewrite enabled on my server. I only have mod_alias. This means I have to use the RedirectMatch command. I can't use the usual solutions that use RewriteCond and RewriteRule. (A note on the politics: I am a small-fry subsite maintainer in a very large organisation, so the server admins are unlikely to be willing to change the server config for me!) The following line works, but forms an infinite loop (because the rewritten URL is still caught by the initial regular expression): RedirectMatch permanent ^/intranet(.*)$ https://example.com/intranet$1 One of my internal IT guys has suggested I avoid the infinite loop by moving the files to a new directory with a new name (eg /intranet2/). That seems pretty ugly to me. And people could still accidentally/deliberately revert to an insecure connection by visiting http://example.com/intranet2/ directly. Then I tried this, but it didn't work: RedirectMatch permanent ^http:(.*)/intranet(.*)$ https://example.com/intranet$1 I suspect it didn't work because the first argument must be a file path from the root directory, so it can't start with "http:". So: any better ideas how to do this?

  • Shouldn't we ignore IE6 and IE7 users?

    - by Sebi
Lately I created two webpages with a simple CMS for a a small club and a private person (http://foto.roser.li and http://www.ovlu.li/cms). I dont really understand much of HTML/PHP/CSS and all this web stuff, but it was enough to adapt the stylesheets and add some javascript functions and so on to make the pages to look more or less nice in firefox and IE8. Nevertheles, if you open the pages with IE7 or IE6, particulary the second home page really looks terrible. So what should I do know? I don't have the know-how to adapt the stylesheets so that it looks good at such browsers. However if I check the statistics of the pages, i noticed that almost half of the visitors uses this kind of browsers. I could put much effort in adapting the stylesheets to look good at all browser but while thinking about this I'm asking myself if this is really the best way. If all developers put effort in providing solutions for really old browsers (like e.g. the IE6), then people who use these brwoser dont have any incentives to update their browsers. Naturally, I as a provider of information should present the content in a readable form to my users, but were should i draw the line? I also saw that some users are visiting the pages with even IE5 or IE4... but I really can't think of a way how to adapt the content in a suitable form for these very old brwosers. I would appreciaed any hints how to handle this balancing between putting much effort into developing a version for very old brwosers and the necessity of providing content to all users which want to visits my homepages. Im also interested in your thoughts about they idea that putting effort in adapting the content for old browsers prevents the users from updating their browsres because they don't see any need.

  • For a 1view/scene to 2view/scene app, what application should I choose in Xcode?

    - by Tony Xu
The question may be simple to some others, but I have been struggling with this for a while. The app I want would be like this: first scene/view with two big buttons (no toolbar item), click each one to get into two new scenes. So totally three scenes. In Xcode, what application should I choose? And in storyboard how/should I drag/draw? Thanks. Update: thanks for the link, the big-number-user. I actually read that tutorial before I asked. A little update on what I got so far: 1, I selected "single view", so there's view controller 1 (VC1) in the storyboard. 2, dragged a navigation controller (NC), and move the initial view arrow pointing to NC 3, control-drag to link NC and VC1, selected "relationship segue root view controller" when some small dialog popup. IS THIS CORRECT? 4, created two additional VC, VC3 and VC4, control-drag link each to NC. selected "push", IS THIS CORRECT? 5, in VC1, I added two buttons, showVC3 and showVC4. NOW I DON'T KNOW how to add IBAction to button showVC3 and showVC4. I tried to control-drag it to ViewController.m file @interface and @end section, but failed. What should I do next?

  • C++ traits question

    - by duli
I have a templated class template <typename Data> class C { ..... } In most situations, I depend on the compiler to let me substitute types for Data. I call methods foo(), goo() on objects of type Data, so what I substitute needs to provide that. I now need to substitute int and string for my Data type. I do not want to specialize because the class is already too big and would require specializing each method (with only small code change). My options (please tell me if there are more) 1) I can provide wrapper classes around int and string which implement the methods foo(), goo() etc 2) provide a traits class traits that calls foo() or goo() on objects of classes that provide foo(),goo() (these are my present substitutable classes) and specialize these classes for int and string. Questions 1) what are the relative merits of 1 vs 2? 2) My traits classes will have static methods. Can a traits class have non-static methods as well? I see most traits classes define constants in the STL. 3) Do I make the traits classes global or should I pass them in as a template parameter for class C?

  • ListView exception for Images + Text

    - by drozzy
I am trying to create a simple Icon+Text ListView but it does not work. I am using 2.1 Android SDK. My main class is very small slightly modified from the tutorial: public class Stuffs extends ListActivity { static final String[] COUNTRIES = new String[] {"A", "B","C"}; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.list_item, R.id.title, COUNTRIES)); } } and my list_item.xml file is this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation = "horizontal"> <ImageView android:id = "@+id/icon" android:src="@drawable/icon" /> <TextView android:id = "@+id/title" android:padding="10dp" android:textSize="16sp" > </TextView> </LinearLayout> I have also created a "drawable" directory in my res directory and copied a "icon.png" into it. But any time I try to run this the application hangs up unexpected in my android emulator. Am I missing something?

  • Figure and figcaption figures shrink images

    - by Why Not
    I'm attempting to use the figure and figcaption tags to varying success. Someone suggested a great CSS method to get rid of the figure margin and also link up the caption with the image. The problem: all images shrink to an extremely small size. Not sure how to rectify this. These are user-submitted images using Django so they vary in size. But currently, using these fixes, all of these shrink with a caption that does fit the image but defeats the purpose as it results in a tiny image with a caption with an even width. {% if story.pic %} <h2>Image</h2> <figure> <img class="image"src="{{ story.pic.url }}" alt="some_image_alt_text"/> {% if story.caption %} <figcaption>{{story.caption}}</figcaption> {% endif %} </figure> {% endif %} figure {margin:0; display:table; width:1px;} figcaption {display:table-row;}

  • First Time Working With Others?

    - by cam
I've been at my very first programming job for about 8 months now and I've learned incredible amounts so far. Unfortunately, I'm the sole developer for a small startup company for internal applications. For the first time ever though, I'll be handing off some of my projects to someone else when I leave this job. I've documented all my projects thoroughly (at least I think so), but I still feel nervous about someone else reading my code. For example, I've always done this sort of thing. for (int i = 0; i < blah.length; i++) { //Do stuff } Should I name 'i' something descriptive? It's only a temporary variable, and will only exist within that loop, and it seems that it's pretty obvious what the loop does with 'i'. This is just one example. Another one is that I name variables differently... I don't really conform to a standard of naming besides starting all private members with an underscore. Are there any resources that could show me how to make it easier for the next developer? Are there standards for this type of thing?

  • What is the most obfuscated and clever code you've seen? [closed]

    - by ThibThib
I am aware about the The International Obfuscated C Code Contest, but I am looking for obfuscated AND clever codes (specially short ones) Here is two examples (the first one is a classical one, I think) #define _ F-->00 || F-OO--; long F=00,OO=00; main(){F_OO();printf("%1.3f\n", 4.*-F/OO/OO);}F_OO() { _-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ _-_-_-_ } and #include <unistd.h> float o=0.075,h=1.5,T,r,O,l,I;int _,L=80,s=3200;main(){for(;s%L|| (h-=o,T= -2),s;4 -(r=O*O)<(l=I*I)|++ _==L&&write(1,(--s%L?_<L?--_ %6:6:7)+"World! \n",1)&&(O=I=l=_=r=0,T+=o /2))O=I*2*O+h,I=l+T-r;} I let you compile and run them so as to understand what they are producing. Of course, I am not looking for only obfuscated code, because I guess that every code could be transformed in a way that it is not readable at all I am more looking for small codes that you can eventually understand, with some clever tricks. I will show them to my students as example of clever things that they should not do (it's always better to show clever examples rather than stupid ones...) Thanks

  • NHibernate Performance Optimization | Suggestions invited!!!

    - by user336749
Hi, I’m facing an issue with NHibernate performance and can you please suggest me some optimizations? Below mentioned is a small summary of my application architecture I have a windows service which is listening to a messaging bus. On receiving a message the service creates an object out of which a property is the received xml snippet and saves the message to the DB (uses NH). There is a WPF UI with a readonly connection to the DB, and on refresh of the UI it displays the objects on the screen. While the UI does a refresh, it retrieves the xml and deserializes it , from which the object’s properties are derived and binded to the screen. For example assume an xml XXX is received by the service, it deserializes the xml , creates the book object and save it to the DB and a property/column is SCHEMA which contains the xml snippet. The UI while refreshed searches all book objects by ID and creates the book objects out of the xml which is being saved (yes, the xml is the constructor param). Now my issue is that the refresh takes more than 2 minutes to display say 50 book objects. I analyzed it using the NHibernate profiler, and found that the time spend within the DB is negligible, however time spent to create the entities is proportionally huge(10ms:1990 ms).I guess it’s due to the fairly huge size of xml snippet and it’s deserialization. My question is, how can I improve the performance. I dispose sessions after every refresh and is not lazy loading (please note that the time spend in DB is negligible). On every refresh it’s possible that all objects are updated by some downstream systems or maybe one of them are updated. Can I implement some sort of caching mechanism in this case? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Regards, -Mike

  • Determining unknown content-types with the Html5 file api

    - by Jesse
I'm working through a small file upload script (learning experience) and I noticed that when selecting microsoft office related files (.doc or .docx for example) the file objects do not have a type specified: For .doc files I had expected the type to be "application/msword" and along the same train of thought .docx to be "application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document". In the cases when the type cannot be determined is the correct course of action to look at the file extension and match that to the "expected" content / mime type? Sample script: <div id="fileUpload"> <input type="file" id="fileElem" style="display:none;" onchange="handleFiles(this.files)"/> <a href="#" id="fileSelect">Select some files</a> </div> <script type="text/javascript"> var fileSelect = document.getElementById("fileSelect"), fileElem = document.getElementById("fileElem"); fileSelect.addEventListener("click", function (e) { if (fileElem) { fileElem.click(); } e.preventDefault(); }, false); function handleFiles(files) { console.log(files); } </script>

  • Show image on hover with PHP

    - by Sorosh
I have a small problem with my PHP code and It would be very nice if someone could help me. I want to display an image when hovering over a link. This is the link with the PHP code that I have now: <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php if ( has_post_thumbnail() ) {the_post_thumbnail();} else if ( has_post_video() ) {the_post_video_image();}?></a> This code shows a image, but I want to execute this code when hovering over the link with the image: <?php echo print_image_function(); ?> The code also shows a image that belongs to a category. I don't want the initial image to disappear I simply want to show the second image on top off the first image when hovering over the first image. I don't know if it is helpful but I use Wordpress and I am not a PHP expert. I even don't know if this is going to work. Thats why I am asking if somebody can help me with this. Thanks in advance

  • Calculating with a variable outside of its bounds in C

    - by aquanar
If I make a calculation with a variable where an intermediate part of the calculation goes higher then the bounds of that variable type, is there any hazard that some platforms may not like? This is an example of what I'm asking: int a, b; a=30000; b=(a*32000)/32767; I have compiled this, and it does give the correct answer of 29297 (well, within truncating error, anyway). But the part that worries me is that 30,000*32,000 = 960,000,000, which is a 30-bit number, and thus cannot be stored in a 16-bit int. The end result is well within the bounds of an int, but I was expecting that whatever working part of memory would have the same size allocated as the largest source variables did, so an overflow error would occur. This is just a small example to show my problem, I am trying to avoid using floating points by making the fraction be a fraction of the max amount able to be stored in that variable (in this case, a signed integer, so 32767 on the positive side), because the embedded system I'm using I believe does not have an FPU. So how do most processors handle calculations out of the bounds of the source and destination variables?

    I am troubleshooting memory fragmentation in an app pool, as evidenced by a small number of Free objects consuming the most space on the heap: 0x000007ff00256728 6,543 3,890,208 System.Collections.Hashtable+bucket[] 0x000007ff002649a8 7,297 22,979,560 System.Byte[] 0x000007ff001e0d90 251,347 30,374,304 System.String 0x0000000001d0c830 373 48,036,816 Free Running the !dumpgen 3 command reveals the fragmentation; There is a repeating pattern of Free and System.Object objects of the same size: 000000017feb7350 24 **** FREE **** 000000017feb7368 8192 System.Object[] 000000017feb9368 24 **** FREE **** 000000017feb9380 8192 System.Object[] 000000017febb380 24 **** FREE **** 000000017febb398 8192 System.Object[] 000000017febd398 24 **** FREE **** 000000017febd3b0 8192 System.Object[] 000000017febf3b0 24 **** FREE **** 000000017febf3c8 8192 System.Object[] 000000017fec13c8 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fec13e0 8192 System.Object[] 000000017fec33e0 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fec33f8 8192 System.Object[] 000000017fec53f8 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fec5410 14024 System.Object[] 000000017fec8ad8 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fec8af0 8192 System.Object[] 000000017fecaaf0 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fecab08 8192 System.Object[] 000000017feccb08 24 **** FREE **** 000000017feccb20 8192 System.Object[] 000000017feceb20 24 **** FREE **** 000000017feceb38 8192 System.Object[] 000000017fed0b38 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fed0b50 8192 System.Object[] 000000017fed2b50 24 **** FREE **** 000000017fed2b68 8192 System.Object[] When I try to obtain the root of one of the System.Objects with !gcroot, I get a pinned handle, but no additional stack data: Scan Thread 41 OSThread 1044 DOMAIN(0000000001D51330):HANDLE(Pinned):15217e8:Root: 000000017fe60fe8(System.Object[]) As you can see, there is no additional data to go on. Running a !handle command also yields nothing: 0:041> !handle 000000017fe7a068 ff Handle 000000017fe7a068 Type <Error retrieving type> unable to query object information unable to query object information No object specific information available How can I trace out this memory leak when I cannot find what is rooting System.Object?

  • Mapping a URL to a service inside a class library

    - by johnk82swe
I'm developing a small content management solution than can be used in any ASP.NET 3.5 website. The website references some dll's and then lets the aspx's inherit my page baseclass. Some configuration in web.config is also needed, but thats it. Now I'm building a standalone Silverlight editor for the CMS. My idea is that it should communicate with the server using web services. But the question is how to make this service available to the editor? I don't want the website developers having to bother with it. If I used a REST API rather than SOAP I could just create an HttpHandler in my class library and let the website developers add a handler to it in web.config with the path "editor" and then the editor could communicate with that handler on mywebsite.com/editor. Is there any way to achieve the same with a asmx or wcf service? The important thing is that the website developers never have to set up any asmx files or anything. They should only have to specify a url and map that url to a service inside my class library. Thanks in advance!

  • Java socket bug on linux (0xFF sent, -3 received)

    - by Marius
While working on a WebSocket server in Java I came across this strange bug. I've reduced it down to two small java files, one is the server, the other is the client. The client simply sends 0x00, the string Hello and then 0xFF (per the WebSocket specification). On my windows machine, the server prints the following: Listening byte: 0 72 101 108 108 111 recieved: 'Hello' While on my unix box the same code prints the following: Listening byte: 0 72 101 108 108 111 -3 Instead of receiving 0xFF it gets -3, never breaks out of the loop and never prints what it has received. The important part of the code looks like this: byte b = (byte)in.read(); System.out.println("byte: "+b); StringBuilder input = new StringBuilder(); b = (byte)in.read(); while((b & 0xFF) != 0xFF){ input.append((char)b); System.out.print(b+" "); b = (byte)in.read(); } inputLine = input.toString(); System.out.println("recieved: '" + inputLine+"'"); if(inputLine.equals("bye")){ break; } I've also uploaded the two files to my server: Server.java Client.java My Windows machine is running windows 7 and my Linux machine is running Debian

  • Force calling the derived class implementation within a generic function in C#?

    - by Adam Hardy
Ok so I'm currently working with a set of classes that I don't have control over in some pretty generic functions using these objects. Instead of writing literally tens of functions that essentially do the same thing for each class I decided to use a generic function instead. Now the classes I'm dealing with are a little weird in that the derived classes share many of the same properties but the base class that they are derived from doesn't. One such property example is .Parent which exists on a huge number of derived classes but not on the base class and it is this property that I need to use. For ease of understanding I've created a small example as follows: class StandardBaseClass {} // These are simulating the SMO objects class StandardDerivedClass : StandardBaseClass { public object Parent { get; set; } } static class Extensions { public static object GetParent(this StandardDerivedClass sdc) { return sdc.Parent; } public static object GetParent(this StandardBaseClass sbc) { throw new NotImplementedException("StandardBaseClass does not contain a property Parent"); } // This is the Generic function I'm trying to write and need the Parent property. public static void DoSomething<T>(T foo) where T : StandardBaseClass { object Parent = ((T)foo).GetParent(); } } In the above example calling DoSomething() will throw the NotImplemented Exception in the base class's implementation of GetParent(), even though I'm forcing the cast to T which is a StandardDerivedClass. This is contrary to other casting behaviour where by downcasting will force the use of the base class's implementation. I see this behaviour as a bug. Has anyone else out there encountered this?
