Working with FusionCharts using ASP.NET

Nowadays, users are constantly looking for more intuitive user interfaces. Because of this, it is vital to develop ASP.NET applications with diagrams such as Charts. FusionCharts enables you to plug-in several charts from a wide range of sources easily with a small amount of code. In this article, Anand examines the usage of FusionCharts in a step-by-step manner using three different scenarios. He initially examines the plotting of charts using the data from an XML file and also demonstrates the same using the values entered by users. Finally, Anand delves deep into the database connectivity aspects using an Access 2010 database with the help of relevant source code examples and screenshots.

CMS DITA North America Conference / Agile Doc

I attended and presented, along with a colleague, at the Content Management Strategies DITA North America Conference 2010 in Santa Clara this week. It was touch and go whether I would make it across the Atlantic, but as usual the Irish always got through! Our presentation was about DITA and Writing Patterns, and there was three other presentations from Oracle folks too, all very well delivered and received. The interaction with other companies was superb, and the sparks of innovation that flew as a result left me with three use case ideas for UX investigation and implementation. My colleague had a similar experience. Well worth attending! One of the last sessions was about Authoring in an Agile environment, presented by Julio Vasquez. This was an excellent, common sense, and forthright no-nonsense delivery that made complete sense to me. I'd encourage you, if you are interested in the subject, to check out Julio's white paper on the subject too, available from the SDI website.

XAF DSL Tool Needs a new Team Lead

I have enjoyed my time on this project and have used it in several production projects. However, with the enhancements in Visual Studio 2010 and the Entity Framework, the DSL tool doesn’t make sense for me to support at this time. With that said, I am looking for someone who has interest to continue the project if they so desire. I have moved my attention to creating a new project at Entity Framework Extensions for XAF. We are converting the current DSL tool into the Entity Framework extensions. The same code generation and everything else work. However, the visual design surface is so much easier to work with. If you have any questions, please let me know. Also, please take a moment to look at the new project. This is where all my effort going forward will be focused. Thanks again for all the support on my vision this far and enjoy.

Do NOT remove the reference to System.Core from your VS2010 Project

One of the things I routinely do when adding a new class library project, is remove all references and just add them back in as I need them. That is NOT a good idea for Visual Studio 2010. When I DID need System.Core, and went to add it back, this is what I got: "A reference to 'System.Core' could not be added. This component is automatically referenced..." After some Googling I found this article: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/525663/cannot-remove-system-core-dll-reference-from-a-vs2010-project It tells you to add it back manually. Here is the part that needs back in the project file. After the last PropertyGroup node, add this node: <ItemGroup> <Reference Include="System.Core" /> </ItemGroup> You should be good to go again. Is donationware a good monetization model for developers?

I've been developing for Android for about 2 years (and ~1 year for iOS), releasing freeware and open source applications (mostly because my AdSense account was disabled in 2010), but recently I had an idea for a great app that I wanted to get some money, since it would take some effort to develop and also I would like to test this "commercial" model to know if this could make me invest more time improving and making my apps better. Since my AdSense account was disabled and then I'll not be about to sell it on the Google Play Store, I thought about making it a donationware so I would distribute it for free (and probably open source too) and users that really liked the app and wanted to give me a thanks and a incentive to continue developing it could donate any amount of money. So, what's your experience with donationware? Is it worth compared to paid apps?

Two weeks ago I was in Iceland, talking about SharePoint 2010 at TM Software (some photos here :-) ). During the course, some students showed me a pretty cool public SharePoint 2007 site that they have been working on: OneResponse (http://oneresponse.info). OneResponse is the site the United Nations uses to collaborate and share information during catastrophes such as the recent earthquake in Haiti. Besides of the fact that the site is implemented really well, it must be pretty cool to know that your work will have such a big impact. Well done guys, it was a pleasure to be your guest!

While most of the buzz at the recent PDC here at Microsoft's headquarters has been about Windows Azure and Windows Phone, there is a truly noteworthy technology that as a .NET developer (of any kind of application) you should pay attention to, even in its early technology preview stage: Visual Studio Async CTP. I could provide many more direct links, but you do not need them: just visit the home page of this technology to download whitepapers, watch videos on how this technology integrates with C# and with VB, (through the new async and await language keywords) as well as videos on how the technology works under the covers (based largely on the Task Parallel Library). More importantly, download the actual bits (they install on top of your Visual Studio 2010), which include many samples.
