  • Core Plot causing crash on device but not simulator.

    - by Eric
I'm using core plot to create a small plot in one of my view controllers. I have been pulling my hair out trying to track down this error. I install on the simulator and it works fine but as soon as I put it on my device I get the following error: 2010-02-04 22:15:37.394 Achieve[127:207] *** -[NSCFString drawAtPoint:withTextStyle:inContext:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x108530 2010-02-04 22:15:37.411 Achieve[127:207] *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFString drawAtPoint:withTextStyle:inContext:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x108530' 2010-02-04 22:15:37.427 Achieve[127:207] Stack: ( 843263261, 825818644, 843267069, 842763033, 842725440, 253481, 208187, 823956912, 823956516, 823956336, 823953488, 823952500, 823985628, 842717233, 843010887, 843009055, 860901832, 843738160, 843731504, 8797, 8692 ) terminate called after throwing an instance of 'NSException' Program received signal: “SIGABRT”. • Should I release NSString before assigning a new value to it?

    - by Elliot Chen
Hi, Please give me some suggestions about how to change a NSString variable. At my class, I set a member var: NSString *m_movieName; ... @property(nonatomic, retain) NSString *m_movieName; At viewDidLoad method, I assign a default name to this var: -(void)viewDidLoad{ NSString *s1 = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"Forrest Gump"]; self.m_movieName = s1; ... [s1 release]; [super viewDidLoad] } At some function, I want to give a new name to this var, so I did like: -(void)SomeFunc{ NSString *s2 = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"Brave Heart"]; //[self.movieName release]; // ??????? Should perform here? self.m_moiveName = s2; [s2 release]; } I know, NSString* var is just a pointer to an allocated memory block, and 'assign' operation will increment this memory block's using count. For my situation, should I release m_movieName before assigning a value to it? If I do not release it (via [self.movieName release]), when and where will the previous block be released? Thanks for your help very much!

  • when/where should properties be released once the objects is pushed for display?

    - by Tzur Gazit
Hi, I've defined a view controller with an array as one of its properties, and set the array with an allocated and autoreleased array. After I push the view for display I release it. By watching the leaks tool I see that every time that I pop the view I suffer from leakage. I tried to release the properties explicitly, immediately after the push but the app crashes. looking forward for your suggestions.

  • How to stop the targets generated by schedule:@selector(target:) interval:timeInterval ?

    - by srikanth rongali
I am using [self schedule:@selector(target:) interval:timeInterval]; for generating bullets in shooting game in cocos2d. In target: I called method targetGenerate to generate for bullet. The enemy generates these bullets. After the player won or enemy won the game the bullets should stop. But, I could not make them stop. I used flags for this. But they did either work. If I set flag1 = 1; for game won. I am using [self schedule:@selector(update:)]; for updating the bullet position to know it hits the player or not ? And I tried like this -(id)init { if( (self = [super init]) ) { //code for enemy [self schedule:@selector(target:) interval:timeInterval]; [self schedule:@selector(update:)]; }return self; } -(void)target:(ccTime)dt { if(flag != 1) [self targetGenerate]; } -(void)targetGenerate { //code for the bullet to generate; CCSprite *bullet = … } -(void)update:(ccTime)dt { //code for to know intersection of bullet and player } But it was not working. How can I make the bullets to disappear after player won the game or enemy won the game ? Thank you.

  • Why aren't my objects sorting with sortedArrayUsingDescriptors?

    - by clozach
I expected the code below to return the objects in imageSet as a sorted array. Instead, there's no difference in the ordering before and after. NSSortDescriptor *descriptor = [[NSSortDescriptor alloc] initWithKey:@"imageID" ascending:YES]; NSSet *imageSet = collection.images; for (CBImage *image in imageSet) { NSLog(@"imageID in Set: %@",image.imageID); } NSArray *imageArray = [[imageSet allObjects] sortedArrayUsingDescriptors:(descriptor, nil)]; [descriptor release]; for (CBImage *image in imageArray) { NSLog(@"imageID in Array: %@",image.imageID); } Fwiw, CBImage is defined in my core data model. I don't know why sorting on managed objects would work any differently than on "regular" objects, but maybe it matters. As proof that @"imageID" should work as the key for the descriptor, here's what the two log loops above output for one of the sets I'm iterating through: 2010-05-05 00:49:52.876 Cover Browser[38678:207] imageID in Array: 360339 2010-05-05 00:49:52.876 Cover Browser[38678:207] imageID in Array: 360337 2010-05-05 00:49:52.877 Cover Browser[38678:207] imageID in Array: 360338 2010-05-05 00:49:52.878 Cover Browser[38678:207] imageID in Array: 360336 2010-05-05 00:49:52.879 Cover Browser[38678:207] imageID in Array: 360335 ... For extra credit, I'd love to get a general solution to troubleshooting NSSortDescriptor troubles (esp. if it also applies to troubleshooting NSPredicate). The functionality of these things seems totally opaque to me and consequently debugging takes forever.

  • Chaining animations and memory management

    - by bryan1967
Hey Everyone, Got a question. I have a subclassed UIView that is acting as my background where I am scrolling the ground. The code is working really nice and according to the Instrumentation, I am not leaking nor is my created and still living Object allocation growing. I have discovered else where in my application that adding an animation to a UIImageView that is owned by my subclassed UIView seems to bump up my retain count and removing all animations when I am done drops it back down. My question is this, when you add an animation to a layer with a key, I am assuming that if there is already a used animation in that entry position in the backing dictionary that it is released and goes into the autorelease pool? For example: - (void)animationDidStop:(CAAnimation *)theAnimation finished:(BOOL)flag { NSString *keyValue = [theAnimation valueForKey:@"name"]; if ( [keyValue isEqual:@"step1"] && flag ) { groundImageView2.layer.position = endPos; CABasicAnimation *position = [CABasicAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"position"]; position.timingFunction = [CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionLinear]; position.toValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:midEndPos]; position.duration = (kGroundSpeed/3.8); position.fillMode = kCAFillModeForwards; [position setDelegate:self]; [position setRemovedOnCompletion:NO]; [position setValue:@"step2-1" forKey:@"name"]; [groundImageView2.layer addAnimation:position forKey:@"positionAnimation"]; groundImageView1.layer.position = startPos; position = [CABasicAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"position"]; position.timingFunction = [CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionLinear]; position.toValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:midStartPos]; position.duration = (kGroundSpeed/3.8); position.fillMode = kCAFillModeForwards; [position setDelegate:self]; [position setRemovedOnCompletion:NO]; [position setValue:@"step2-2" forKey:@"name"]; [groundImageView1.layer addAnimation:position forKey:@"positionAnimation"]; } else if ( [keyValue isEqual:@"step2-2"] && flag ) { groundImageView1.layer.position = midStartPos; CABasicAnimation *position = [CABasicAnimation animationWithKeyPath:@"position"]; position.timingFunction = [CAMediaTimingFunction functionWithName:kCAMediaTimingFunctionLinear]; position.toValue = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:endPos]; position.duration = 12; position.fillMode = kCAFillModeForwards; [position setDelegate:self]; [position setRemovedOnCompletion:NO]; [position setValue:@"step1" forKey:@"name"]; [groundImageView1.layer addAnimation:position forKey:@"positionAnimation"]; } } This chains animations infinitely, and as I said one it is running the created and living object allocation doesn't change. I am assuming everytime I add an animation the one that exists in that key position is released. Just wondering I am correct. Also, I am relatively new to Core Animation. I tried to play around with re-using the animations but got a little impatient. Is it possible to reuse animations? Thanks! Bryan

  • How can I write a scrolling text in cocos2d ?

    - by srikanth rongali
I have a text and it should be abled to scrolled only up and down to see entire text. and my application is a game and written in cocos2d. So, I have layers. There is also an image(CCSprite) adjacent to text. The text should be scrolled and the image have a touchesEnded: property. I used CCLabel for text and CCParallaxNode to add the text. But the text appears like a continues paragraph. But, my text should have different lines. My text is like this. //text starts Hey Player. Do you want to play the game right now then play. Do you want to practice or Play? what want to do? ...text continues //text ends What should I use for this ? Thank you.

  • Line breaks in "NSString"s returned from PList don't work.

    - by Moshe
I've seen this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2035567/nsstring-newline-escape-in-plist but I'd like to know if there's a way to pragmatically render \n line breaks. I'm currently using: decisionText.text = [NSString stringWithFormat: (@"%@", [replies objectAtIndex:(arc4random() % [replies count])])]; Which randomly grabs a String from the replies array. The array was loaded from a plist like so: replies = [[NSMutableArray alloc] initWithContentsOfFile:[[NSBundle mainBundle]pathForResource:@"AdviceList" ofType:@"plist"]]; What am I missing? The answer can't be to manually enter line breaks. That's not programming! (Sounds like word processing to me.)

Thanks, Gerry

  • compiler directive defensive programming for adding ints to nsmuatablearray FMDB/EGODB

    - by johndpope
I would like to throw a warning message when users try to add an int to an nsmutablearray basically any insert statement that includes values that are not nsstring / nsnumber cause run time crashes. It's exactly the same crash you get when you type %@ instead of %d NSLog(int); The crash is ok, but I want to throw a friendly 'FATAL' message to user. so far I have this try catch with isKindOfClass NSObject but ints are slipping through. #define FATAL_MSG "FATAL: object is not an NSObject subclass. Are you using int? use [NSNumber numberWithInt:1] \n" #define VAToArray(firstarg) ({\ NSMutableArray* valistArray = [NSMutableArray array];\ id obj = nil;\ va_list arguments;\ va_start(arguments, sql);\ @try { \ while ((obj = va_arg(arguments, id))) {\ if([obj isKindOfClass:[NSObject class]]) [valistArray addObject:obj];\ else printf(FATAL_MSG); \ }\ } \ @catch(NSException *exception){ \ printf(FATAL_MSG); \ } \ va_end(arguments);\ valistArray;\ }) - (void)test:(NSString*)sql,... { NSLog(@"VAToArray :%@",VAToArray(sql)); } // then call this [self test:@"str",@"test",nil]; when I call this [self test:@"str",2,nil]; throw the error message.

Update: This problem occurs when the url is mysite.com/post23 but when url is mysite.com/staticpage or mysite.com there are no problems Any workarounds? • Trying to understand NavigationController retain count for ViewControllers on its stack

    - by sharkan
I have an UITableViewController as the rootViewController for my navigatorController. When I press a table cell I do the following: - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { MessageHistory *msg = (MessageHistory *)[[self fetchedResultsController]objectAtIndexPath:indexPath]; ConversationViewController *chatController = [[ConversationViewController alloc]initWithNibName:@"ConversationView" bundle:nil andUser:msg.user]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:chatController animated:YES]; [chatController release]; But when I'm returning from the chatController (using the back button on the navbar) I get “EXC_BAD_ACCESS” commenting //[chatController release]; solves the problem. How? I thought when pushing to the navigationController adds a retain count and when pop from it release it? Also I believe if I'm not including the release after pushing to the navcontroller I'm generating a leak. Any idea what's happening here?

  • Releasing NSData causes exception...

    - by badmanj
Hi, Can someone please explain why the following code causes my app to bomb? NSData *myImage = UIImagePNGRepresentation(imageView.image); : [myImage release]; If I comment out the 'release' line, the app runs... but a few times calling the function containing this code and I get a crash - I guess caused by a memory leak. Even if I comment EVERYTHING else in the function out and just leave those two lines, when the release executes, the app crashes. I'm sure this must be a newbie "you don't know how to clean up your mess properly" kind of thing ;-) Cheers, Jamie.

I have an app that checked for location. It asks the user to use location and if the user says no on the menu there is an issue when i load the mapview. Once i select the mapView it asks for the user location again. If the user says no again my console keeps displaying errors/warning as well as my NSLog from the "didFailWithError" of my location Manager class. Is there a way of stopping the LocationManage:didFailWithErrors if the user has already said no?
