  • How do I pass three arrays from on method to another?

    - by user2966716
    I have a method studentSummary, that scans the input and creates three arrays examMark,courseworkMark and courseworkWeight. I need these arrays passing over to a different method, so I can use them to calculate moduleResult. heres my code: public static int[] studentSummary(int[] courseworkWeight2, int [] examMark2 , int [] courseworkMark2){ int examMark[] = { 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 }; int courseworkMark[] = { 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 }; Scanner resultInput = new Scanner(System.in); int courseworkWeight[] = { 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 }; for (int k = 1; k < 7; k++) { System.out.print("Please enter exam marks for module " + k + ":"); examMark[k - 1] = resultInput.nextInt(); System.out.print("Please enter Coursework marks for module " + k + ":"); courseworkMark[k - 1] = resultInput.nextInt(); System.out.print("Please enter Coursework weighting for module " + k + ":"); courseworkWeight[k - 1] = resultInput.nextInt(); } Calculator method: public static int[] markCalculator() { int[] courseworkWeight = new int [6]; int[] courseworkMark = new int [6]; int[] examMark = new int [6]; for (int i = 0; i < 6; i++) { computedModuleMark = ((courseworkMark[i] * courseworkWeight[i]) + (examMark[i] * (100 - courseworkWeight[i]))) / 100; if ((computedModuleMark) < 35) { if (examMark[i]<35){ } } moduleMark[i] = computedModuleMark; } computeResult(moduleMark); StudentChart.draw(moduleMark); StudentChart.printSummary(moduleMark); return moduleMark; }

  • Using Regular Expressions

    - by bebeTech
    I am having problems trying to use the regular expression that I used in JavaScript. On a web page, you may have: <b>Renewal Date:</b> 03 May 2010</td> I just want to be able to pull out the 03 May 2010, remembering that a webpage has more than just the above content. The way I currently perform this using JavaScript is: DateStr = /<b>Renewal Date:<\/b>(.+?)<\/td>/.exec(returnedHTMLPage); I tried to follow some tutorials on java.util.regex.Pattern and java.util.regex.Matcher with no luck. I can't seem to be able to translate (.+?) into something they can understand?? thanks, Noeneel

  • 32-bit JVM on 64-bit Windows crashes on launch with -Xmx1300m and plenty of free memory

    - by Konrad Garus
    I'm struggling with Java heap space settings. The default Java on Windows is the 32-bit client regardless of OS version (that's what Oracle recommends to all users). It appears to set max heap size to 256 MB by default, and that is too little for me. I use a custom launcher to start the application. I would like it to use more memory on computers with plenty RAM, and default to -Xmx512m on those with less RAM. As far as I'm aware, the only way is the static -Xmx setting (that has to be set on launch). I have a user who has 8 GB RAM, 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Java 7. Maximum memory visible to the JVM is 4G (as returned by querying OperatingSystemMXBean). I understand why, no issue. For some reason my application is unable to start for this user with -Xmx1300m, even though he has 2.3G free memory. He closed some applications (having 5G free memory), and still it would not launch. The error reported to me was: error occured during init of vm could not reserve enough space for object heap What's going on? Could it be that the 32-bit JVM is only able to address the "first" 4G of memory and has to have a 1300M block available within those first 4 gigabytes? How can I solve this problem, except for asking everyone to install 64-bit Java (what is unlikely to be acceptable)?

  • Displaying data from linked tables in netbeans JTable

    - by Darc
    I have been writing in java for a few months now and have just started using netbeans. I have spent all day today trying to work out how to connect to an SQL database and display data from 2 tables (ie display the data from from a select statement with an inner join) in a JTable. I have tried using JPQL with the following statment SELECT j, cust.name FROM Job j JOIN j.jobnumber cust where the job table has a field called customer that references id in the customer table. This throws the exception: Caused by: Exception [TOPLINK-8029] (Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2.0.1 (Build b09d-fcs (12/06/2007))): oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.EJBQLException Exception Description: Error compiling the query [SELECT j, cust.name FROM Job j JOIN j.jobnumber cust], line 1, column 11: invalid navigation expression [cust.name], cannot navigate expression [cust] of type [java.lang.Integer] inside a query. at oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.EJBQLException.invalidNavigation(EJBQLException.java:430) What am i doing wrong? Can anyone point me to some examples of how to make a linked table java application? I am still in the very early stages of development so a complete change is not out of the question if using a mysql database isnt the best way to go about things thanks

  • Accessing a function of an instance which is in an arraylist

    - by fadeir
    I'm tring to access a function of an instance which is in an arraylist. Is there any way to do that without using the class name of the instance? import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.List; class apple{ int price; public void myFunction(int iPrice) { price=iPrice; } } class orange{ int price; public void myFunction(int iPrice) { price=iPrice; } } public class main { public static void main(String[] args) { List list= new ArrayList(); //create 3 apple object to list list.add( new apple() ); list.add( new apple() ); list.add( new orange() ); list.get(0).myFunction(1); /* Error: The method myFunction(int) is undefined for the type Object*/ } } I know that;((apple) list.get(0)).myFunction(1); is a way but I'dont want to use any class name while calling the function.

  • Difference between ruby StringScanner post_match and rest?

    - by zhon
    What is the difference between ruby's StringScanner#post_match and StringScanner#rest? scanner = StringScanner.new('Say hello to...') scanner.scan(/\w+/) #=> 'Say' scanner.scan(/\s+/) #=> ' ' scanner.rest #=> 'hello to...' scanner.post_match #=> 'hello to...' scanner.rest.class #=> String scanner.post_match.class #=> String I don't see a difference. It seems like both return a string containing everything after the match.

  • File sorting, Comparison method violates its general contract

    - by user2677383
    My file sorting comparator sometimes invoke java.lang.IllegalArgumentException in android app. I cannot figure out the reason. could you explain that? here is my code block: Comparator cc = new Comparator<File>() { @Override public int compare(File f1, File f2) { if (f1.isDirectory() && !f2.isDirectory()) { return 1; } if (f2.isDirectory() && !f1.isDirectory()) { return -1; } if ((f1.isFile() && f2.isFile()) || (f1.isDirectory() && f2.isDirectory())) { if (sort == 1) { return Util.compareFileName(f2.getName(), f1.getName()); } else if (sort == 2) { return (int) (f1.lastModified() - f2.lastModified()); } else if (sort == 3) { return (int) (f2.lastModified() - f1.lastModified()); } else if (sort == 4) { return (int) (f1.length() - f2.length()); } else if (sort == 5) { return (int) (f2.length() - f1.length()); } else return Util.compareFileName(f1.getName(), f2.getName()); } return f1.compareTo(f2); } }; Util.compareFileName is as followings: public static int compareFileName(String s1, String s2) { int thisMarker = 0; int thatMarker = 0; int s1Length = s1.length(); int s2Length = s2.length(); while (thisMarker < s1Length && thatMarker < s2Length) { String thisChunk = getChunk(s1, s1Length, thisMarker); thisMarker += thisChunk.length(); String thatChunk = getChunk(s2, s2Length, thatMarker); thatMarker += thatChunk.length(); // If both chunks contain numeric characters, sort them numerically int result = 0; if (isDigit(thisChunk.charAt(0)) && isDigit(thatChunk.charAt(0))) { // Simple chunk comparison by length. int thisChunkLength = thisChunk.length(); result = thisChunkLength - thatChunk.length(); // If equal, the first different number counts if (result == 0) { for (int i = 0; i < thisChunkLength; i++) { result = thisChunk.charAt(i) - thatChunk.charAt(i); if (result != 0) { return result; } } } } else { result = thisChunk.compareTo(thatChunk); } if (result != 0) return result; } return s1Length - s2Length; }

  • How to import 3rd party libraries

    - by Thahzan Mohomed
    I found some cool android libraries the other day and decided to try some. But I'm having trouble correctly importing the library. This is the URL of the library : https://github.com/dmytrodanylyk/android-process-button I first tried importing the library to eclipse (and move the files in java directory to src directory and set the project as library) and importing the sample to eclipse and set it to use the library project (Properties-Android-Libraries). But it didn't work. The layout files said it failed to instantiate [custom widget class]. The I tried importing the .jar file to libs directory (and update the java build path) but it didn't work either. It showed errors in the java files too. I then tried copying all the java and layout files to the sample project directory and it worked. But I'm guessing that's not the way to work with 3rd party libraries. I first thought it's some error with the library but all the other libraries I tried to import to my projects faced the same problem. Can someone walk me through how to correctly import a 3rd party library to my android project?

  • Swing Menu dimensions

    - by ikurtz
    Greetings. I am trying to learn Java and Swing (today is my first day). I have been able to set up a menu in my test application. but the items occupy very little space (they are narrow). How do I go about extendng the amount of space it uses? I am studying Teach Yourself Java 6 in 21 Days 5th Ed, Java Swing, 2nd Edition, 2002 and Teach Yourself Programming With Java In 24 Hours, 4th Edition (2005) but none of them shed any light on this issue. EDIT: Menu code: JMenu _Game = new JMenu("Game"); JMenuItem _New = new JMenuItem("New"); JMenuItem _Exit = new JMenuItem("Exit"); JMenu _Turn = new JMenu("Turn"); JMenuItem _Red = new JMenuItem("Red"); JMenuItem _Yellow = new JMenuItem("Yellow"); _Turn.add(_Red); _Turn.add(_Yellow); _Game.add(_New); _Game.addSeparator(); _Game.add(_Turn); _Game.addSeparator(); _Game.add(_Exit); JMenu _Help = new JMenu("Help"); JMenuItem _About = new JMenuItem("About"); _Help.add(_About); JMenuBar _MenuBar = new JMenuBar(); _MenuBar.add(_Game); _MenuBar.add(_Help); setJMenuBar(_MenuBar); EDIT: Solved! JMenuItem _New = new JMenuItem("New "); just add spaces as needed! simple.

  • Comparator interface

    - by 1ace1
    ok I was going to edit my previous question but i wasnt sure if it was the right way to do it so i'll just give another question about Comparator, now i want to be able to sort with different ways. I have a bank checks and i want to sort with checkNumber then checkAmount i managed to do it with checkNumber but couldnt figure out how with checkAmount here is how i did it for checkNumber: import java.util.Comparator; public class Check implements Comparator { private int checkNumber; private String description; private double checkAmount; public Check() { } public Check(int newCheckNumber, double newAmountNumber) { setCheckNumber(newCheckNumber); setAmountNumber(newAmountNumber); } public String toString() { return checkNumber + "\t\t" + checkAmount; } public void setCheckNumber(int checkNumber) { this.checkNumber = checkNumber; } public int getCheckNumber() { return checkNumber; } public void setAmountNumber(double amountNumber) { this.checkAmount = amountNumber; } public double getAmountNumber() { return checkAmount; } @Override public int compare(Object obj1, Object obj2) { int value1 = ((Check) obj1).getCheckNumber(); int value2 = ((Check) obj2).getCheckNumber(); int result = 0; if (value1 > value2){ result = 1; } else if(value1 < value2){ result = -1; } return result; } } import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.Collections; import test.CheckValue; public class TestCheck { public static void main(String[] args) { ArrayList List = new ArrayList(); List.add(new Check(445, 55.0)); List.add(new Check(101,43.12)); List.add(new Check(110,101.0)); List.add(new Check(553,300.21)); List.add(new Check(123,32.1)); Collections.sort(List, new Check()); System.out.println("Check Number - Check Amount"); for (int i = 0; i < List.size(); i++){ System.out.println(List.get(i)); } } } thank you very much in advance and please tell me if im submiting things in the wrong way.

  • Counting substring, while loop

    - by user1554786
    public class SubstringCount { public static void main(String[] args) { Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.println("Enter a word longer than 4 characters, and press q to quit"); int count = 0; while (scan.hasNextLine()) { System.out.println("Enter a word longer than 4 characters, and press q to quit"); String word = scan.next(); if (word.substring(0,4).equals("Stir")) { count++; System.out.println("Enter a word longer than 4 characters, and press q to quit"); scan.next(); } else if (word.equals("q")) { System.out.println("You have " + count + ("words with 'Stir' in them")); } else if (!word.substring(0,4).equals("Stir")) { System.out.println("Enter a word longer than 4 characters, and press q to quit"); scan.next(); } } } } Here I need to print how many words entered by the user contain the substring 'Stir.' However I'm not sure how to get this to work, or if I've done any of it right in the first place! Thanks for any help!

  • Pass command line arguments to JUnit test case being run programmatically

    - by __nv__
    I am attempting to run a JUnit Test from a Java Class with: JUnitCore core = new JUnitCore(); core.addListener(new RunListener()); core.run(classToRun); Problem is my JUnit test requires a database connection that is currently hardcoded in the JUnit test itself. What I am looking for is a way to run the JUnit test programmatically(above) but pass a database connection to it that I create in my Java Class that runs the test, and not hardcoded within the JUnit class. Basically something like JUnitCore core = new JUnitCore(); core.addListener(new RunListener()); core.addParameters(java.sql.Connection); core.run(classToRun); Then within the classToRun: @Test Public void Test1(Connection dbConnection){ Statement st = dbConnection.createStatement(); ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery("select total from dual"); rs.next(); String myTotal = rs.getString("TOTAL"); //btw my tests are selenium testcases:) selenium.isTextPresent(myTotal); } I know about The @Parameters, but it doesn't seem applicable here as it is more for running the same test case multiple times with differing values. I want all of my test cases to share a database connection that I pass in through a configuration file to my java client that then runs those test cases (also passed in through the configuration file). Is this possible? P.S. I understand this seems like an odd way of doing things.

  • Thread Suicide on Shutdown?

    - by yar
    I have a java.util.Timer running at a fixed interval. I have added a Runtime#addShutdownHook and it shuts down when the VM ends normally or abnormally. However, it keeps the VM alive when a main terminates, unless I insist by doing a System.exit in the main. Is there any way for me to check if I'm the last Thread standing, or some other way to avoid altering a main that would exit normally on finish? Note: I know a lot of people believe that java.util.Timer is deprecated (it's not), but unless your alternative helps me solve this problem...

  • Why is this giving me an infinite loop?

    - by Chase Yuan
    I was going through a code used to calculate investments until it has doubled and I received an infinite loop that I can't seem to solve. Can anyone figure out why this is giving me an infinite loop? I've gone through myself but I can't seem to find the problem. The "period" referred is how many times per year the interest is compounded. double account = 0; //declares the variables to be used double base = 0; double interest = 0; double rate = 0; double result = 0; double times = 0; int years = 0; int j; System.out.println("This is a program that calculates interest."); Scanner kbReader = new Scanner(System.in); //enters in all data System.out.print("Enter account balance: "); account = kbReader.nextDouble(); System.out.print("Enter interest rate (as decimal): "); rate = kbReader.nextDouble(); System.out.println(" " + "Years to double" + " " + "Ending balance"); base = account; result = account; for (j=0; j<3; j++){ System.out.print("Enter period: "); times = kbReader.nextDouble(); while (account < base*2){ interest = account * rate / times; account = interest + base; years++; } account = (((int)(account * 100))/100.0); //results System.out.print(" " + i + " " + account + "\n"); account = result; } The code should ask for three "periods", or three different times the entered data is compounded per year (ex annually, monthly, daily etc.) Thanks a lot!

  • Using addMouseListener() and paintComponent() for JPanel

    This is a follow-up to my previous question. I've simplified things as much as I could, and it still doesn't work! Although the good thing I got around using getGraphics().
