  • How hard is it for a .NET programmer to learn Objective C and Cocoa?

    - by rsteckly
Hi, I'm trying to build a dual platform application for a company of my own I'm trying to start at night. I have the .NET version done, but have not finished the UI part. I'm thinking of buying some 3rd party controls. If I buy these controls, however, they clearly will only work in my Windows version. I'm wondering if I should try to do the UI in GTK# and use Mono with CocoaSharp or just build the thing in MS technology and teach myself the Mac side? I'm just really unfamiliar with the Mac world and am wondering how much of a learning curve there might be. I've thought perhaps of rewriting my core logic in Ruby or Python. This why I could use the .NET version with .NET controls and presumably hook the same code up on the Mac. It's an educational app targeted at consumers. As such, it shouldn't require a lot of technical sophistication to install.

  • How do I enumerate installed OleDb providers for current processor architecture?

    - by Rowland Shaw
I've a project that connects to a dBase format database file, that I've always done in the past with a connection string of the form of: PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=MyData.dbf;Extended Properties=dBASE 5.0 I've had to revisit this recently, and have found that when attempting to create an OleDbConnection with that connection string on x64 machines, that have an x86 install of Office on it, it throws an exception. A quick hack of a fix shows that forcing the application to target x86 only makes it work, but I was hoping to be able to tidy this up and check in advance whether it would fail to create the connection, so that I could customise my import options to suit the available providers. Is it possible to enumerate the available data providers for the current processor architecture? (other than relying on catching the exception -- after all, the Framework Design Guidelines suggest that you should only throw in exceptional circumstances, and you have a method to check if something would throw an exception)

  • weird space in IE - Any suggestions?

    - by Guru
    The below table is the only element inside a body tag - This displays fine in Firefox 3 as i expect it to be but it does not look good in IE7. There is a weird space just between the nested table and the row above. Can you please suggest some way to remove that weird space? - Thanks <table> <tr> <td colspan="14"> <div> <table id="value_table" width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="2" style="border-collapse: collapse; display: block"> <tr> <td height="20" align="center" valign="Middle" class="Header"> <div align="left"><b>  Search Relationships</b></div> </td> </tr> <tr> <td>This is working</td> </tr> <tr valign="top"> <td>second row</td> <td nowrap="nowrap" class="GrayRow" valign="top" border="1" height="40" align="center" style="border: none"> just above the table <table border="1" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="left"> <tr valign="top"> <td>new row inside table</td> <td class="GrayRow" nowrap="nowrap"> <b>Select:</b>   <select id="j_id19:browseType" name="j_id19:browseType" size="1" class="TextBlackNormal" onchange="showDynamicBox(this);"> <option value="NAME">User Name</option> <option value="ID">User Id</option> <option value="IBD/Office/IP">IBD/Office /IP</option> <option value="APA#">APA#</option></select>    </td> <td> <div id="dynamicBox1" style="display: block"><input id="j_id19:j_id23" name="j_id19:j_id23" type="text" value="" size="32" class="TextBlackNormal" /></div> </td>     <td> <div id="dynamicBox2" style="display: none"><input id="j_id19:j_id25" name="j_id19:j_id25" type="text" value="" size="32" class="TextBlackNormal" /></div> </td>     <td> <div id="dynamicBox3" style="display: none"> IBD   <input id="j_id19:ibdval1" name="j_id19:ibdval1" type="text" value="" maxlength="3" size="3" onkeyup="goToNextFocus(this);" class="TextBlackNormal" />   OFF   <input id="j_id19:ibdval2" name="j_id19:ibdval2" type="text" value="" maxlength="3" size="3" onkeyup="goToNextFocus(this);" class="TextBlackNormal" />   IP    <input id="j_id19:ibdval3" name="j_id19:ibdval3" type="text" value="" maxlength="3" size="3" onkeyup="goToNextFocus(this);" class="TextBlackNormal" /> </div> </td>     <td> <div id="dynamicBox4" style="display: none"> Average Price Account#    <input id="j_id19:apaval1" name="j_id19:apaval1" type="text" value="" maxlength="3" size="3" onkeyup="goToNextFocus(this);" class="TextBlackNormal" />  <input id="j_id19:apaval2" name="j_id19:apaval2" type="text" value="" maxlength="3" size="3" onkeyup="goToNextFocus(this);" class="TextBlackNormal" />  <input id="j_id19:apaval3" name="j_id19:apaval3" type="text" value="" maxlength="3" size="3" onkeyup="goToNextFocus(this);" class="TextBlackNormal" /> </div> </td>        <td class="GrayRow" nowrap="nowrap"> <div id="msg_multiple_inputs" style="display:none"> <font color="#990000" size="1">Enter multiple separated by commas   </font> </div>                                   </td> <td><input id="j_id19:display" name="j_id19:display" type="submit" value="Display" class="TextBlackNormal" /></td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> </div> </td> </tr> </table>

  • Why only the constant expression can be used as case expression in Switch statement?

    - by sinec
Hi, what is bothering me is that I can't found an info regarding the question from the title. I found that assembly form the Switch-case statement is compiled into bunch of (MS VC 2008 compiler) cmp and je calls: 0041250C mov eax, dword ptr [i] 0041250F mov dword ptr [ebp-100h],eax 00412515 cmp dword ptr [ebp-100h],1 0041251C je wmain+52h (412532h) 0041251E cmp dword ptr [ebp-100h],2 00412525 je wmain+5Bh (41253Bh) 00412527 cmp dword ptr [ebp-100h],3 0041252E je wmain+64h (412544h) 00412530 jmp wmain+6Bh (41254Bh) where for above code will in case that if condition (i) is equal to 2, jump to address 41253Bh and do execution form there (at 41253Bh starts the code for 'case 2:' block) What I don't understand is why in case that, for instance, function is used as 'case expression', why first function couldn't be evaluated and then its result compared with the condition? Am I missing something? Thank you in advance

  • Outlook AppointmentItem - How do I programmatically add RTF to its Body?

    - by Stuart Harris
    I would like to set the Body of an AppointmentItem to a string of RTF that contains an embedded image. Setting Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.AppointmentItem.Body results in the RTF appearing as-is in the appointment. I have tried using Redemption which wraps the appointment and exposes an RTFBody property, but the RTF formatting (including the image) is lost. In this example (which doesn't have an embedded image) the RTF appears in the document as-is. Has anyone managed to do this? var appointment = (AppointmentItem)app.CreateItem(OlItemType.olAppointmentItem); appointment.Subject = "test subject"; appointment.Start = DateTime.Now; appointment.End = DateTime.Now.AddHours(1); appointment.Body = @"{\rtf1\ansi\deff0{\fonttbl{\f0 Arial;}}{\colortbl ;\red0\green0\blue255;}\pard\cf1\f0\fs24 Test}"; appointment.Save();

  • Design interoperable web services

    - by Zyd
Hi everyone, I'm designing a set of web services to allow our clients to connect from their apps to one of our systems. Our clients have their apps developed in all varieties of frameworks (.NET, Java, PHP, Python and even the occasional all JS app), so obviously WS is the way to go. Investigating a little about truly interop WS I've found that the way to go is to design first the WSDL and XSD and derive the implementations from there. What i'm really looking for is guidance if this is really the way to go. I've read that WCF creates interoperable WS but i'm not a fan of MS creating something standard. Should i use WCF or there is a good set of tools for designing WSDL and XSD without the pain i'm expecting. Thanks in advance

  • Looking for examples of good IDEs to analyze for Form/Report design

    - by Paul Sasik
I am working on a basic form/report designer. Some of the features i'm looking to implement are: Single or multiple selection of objects Alignment of objects (when several are selected) Same-sizing of objects (when several are selected) Moving/dragging of selected object(s) Selected object resizing in eight directions (using object grips) For features and look-and-feel I've analyzed and used a mixture of ideas from: MS Visual Studio 200x (most useful so far) Visio Crystal Reports My question is: Have I overlooked some other IDEs that provide these kinds of features that are better and user-friendlier examples of what to do than others i've looked at? (They don't have to be Microsoft products. That's just what i have ready access to.)

  • Column.DbType affecting runtime behavior

    - by leppie
Hi According to the MSDN docs, the DbType property/attribute of a Column type/element is only used for database creation. Yet, today, when trying to submit data to an IMAGE column on a SQLCE database (not sure if only on CE), I got an exception of 'Data truncated to 8000 bytes'. This was due to the DbType still being defined as VARBINARY(MAX) which SQLCE does not support. Changing the type to IMAGE in the DbType fixes the issue. So what other surprises does Linq2SQL attributes hold in store? Is this a bug or intended? Should I report it to MS? UPDATE After getting the answer from Guffa, I tested it, but it seems for NVARCHAR(10) adding a 11 char length string causes a SQL exception, and not Linq2SQL one. The data was truncated while converting from one data type to another. [ Name of function(if known) = ] A first chance exception of type 'System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeException' occurred in System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll

  • Why do I get "could not load type" error with my custom SessionStateProvider

    - by Rising Star
My associate has created a custom SessionStateProvider for me to use with my ASP.net application. I add the file CustomSessionStateProvider to my VS2008 Web Application Project and put the appropriate reference in the web.config and it works fine. However, my supervisor wants me to set this up as a GAC reference. At my office, we have many DLLs we've created that we use as GAC references across different projects. If I add my CustomSessionStateProvider to the Global Assembly Cache, my pages throw a could not load type CustomASP.CustomSessionStateProvider error. Simple removing the DLL from the GAC makes it work again, but I want to set this up as a GAC reference. What could be causing this problem?

  • How do I use functions from a DLL?

    - by Russel
How do I use functions from a DLL? I'm a total newbie and I don't really understand how to use functions from a DLL file. I'm trying to use MS Visual Studio 2008 (C++). My understanding is that the DLL files will have corresponding header files and as long as I include the header files and call the functions normally in my code, it should work? Is that correct? Then I would just need to have the compiled exe file be able to find the DLL? Please let me know if that is a remotely correct understanding! Thanks! Russel

  • How to mark a method as "ignore all handled exception" + "step through"? Even when user has selected

    - by Wolf5
I want to mark a method as "debug step through" even if an exception is thrown (and catched within) the function. This is because 99% of the times I know this function will throw an exception (Assembly.GetTypes), and since this function is in a library I wish to hide this normal exception. (Why did MS not add an exceptionless GetTypes() call?) I have tried this but it still breaks the code when debugging: [DebuggerStepThrough] [DebuggerStepperBoundary] private Type[] GetTypesIgnoreMissing(Assembly ass) { Type[] typs; try { typs = ass.GetTypes(); } catch (ReflectionTypeLoadException ex) { typs = ex.Types; } var newlist = new List<Type>(); foreach (var type in typs) { if (type != null) newlist.Add(type); } return newlist.ToArray(); } Anyone know of a way to make this method 100% stepthrough even if ass.GetTypes() throw an exception in debug mode? It has to step through even when "Break on Thrown exceptions" is on. (I do not need to know I can explicitly choose to ignore that exact type of exception in the IDE)

  • What is the best way to learn VB/VBA?

    - by Noah
I have wanted to learn VB and VBA for a long time. My school offers a coarse, but it doesn't fit with the rest of my schedule. It will be my first programing language. I was considering using the textbook my school uses (An introduction to programing using visual basic 2008, but I wold get the 2010 version), but I was wondering if there were better resources I could use. I mainly want to lean to learn VBA so I cam create macros and other tools for MS Word. Please understand that this is the fist time I will be programming and I am teaching myself (with the books/online resources).

  • vs2010 Cache SQL data incorrect fields

    - by mickartz
OK, I found a walkthrough on msdn for what I was after (offline database cache). However when I let the wizard create a local database from my online sql server the timespan fields are converted to a string?? Now I know the suggestion was to create my own local database and then use the MS Synch framework...however...this proclaims to do it "out of the box" However now I've a dataset which I've no idea how to use, and a database newly formed (for the synched cache) taht I will have to use Ling to Entities with(??) meanwhile I have this weird timespan to string conversion? should I give up now or push on? can i overwrite the the .designer.cs? typeof(string) to typeof(timespan)? damn wizards!!

  • SQL query: how to translate IN() into a JOIN?

    - by tangens
I have a lot of SQL queries like this: SELECT o.Id, o.attrib1, o.attrib2 FROM table1 o WHERE o.Id IN ( SELECT DISTINCT Id FROM table1, table2, table3 WHERE ... ) These queries have to run on different database engines (MySql, Oracle, DB2, MS-Sql, Hypersonic), so I can only use common SQL syntax. Here I read, that with MySql the IN statement isn't optimized and it's really slow, so I want to switch this into a JOIN. I tried: SELECT o.Id, o.attrib1, o.attrib2 FROM table1 o, table2, table3 WHERE ... But this does not take into account the DISTINCT keyword. Question: How do I get rid of the duplicate rows using the JOIN approach?

  • Regular expression help parsing SQLIO output

    - by jaspernygaard
Hi I've been working on a regular expression to parse the output of a series of SQLIO runs. I've gotten pretty far, but not quite there yet. I'm seeking a 100% regex solution and no pre-manipulation of the input. Could anyone assist with a little guidance with the following regular expression: .*v(?<SQLIOVersion>\d\.\d).*\n.*\n(?<threads>\d*)\s.*for\s(?<Seconds>\d+).*\n.*using\s(?<clustersize>[0-9]*)KB.*\n.*\n.*size:\s(?<currentfilesize>\d+).*\n.*\n.*\n.*\n.*\s(?<IOs>\d*\.\d*).*\n.*\s(?<MBs>\d*\.\d*).*\n.*\n.*\s(?<MinLatency_ms>\d+).*\n.*\s(?<AvgLatency_ms>\d+).*\n.*\s(?<MaxLatency_ms>\d+).*\n.*\n.*\n\%\:..(?<ms>\d*\s+)* Here's a snippet of the output - note the headers, which change during the SQLIO batch run: File

  • casting BSTR as char* in a dll; different results depnding on VB/C# caller.

    - by Toby Wilson
I have a dll function that takes BSTR parameters. These are casted as char* before being used for other things. When the dll is called from VB code this works fine. However, when it is called from C# code, only the first character is pointed to. Both of these are excel addIns for Pre-2007 and 2007+ versions of Office, which call into a faster C++ AddIn. They actually call it directly, not through Excel. The VB function declaration looks like this: Private Declare Function Test Lib "ExcelAddIn.xll" (ByVal param As String) As String The C# function declaration looks like this: [DllImport("ExcelAddIn.xll", CharSet=CharSet.Ansi)] [return:MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.BStr)] private static extern string Test([MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.BStr)] string param); When debugging the dll and watching the input BSTR values, they appear to be correct from both; just the C# one only casts the first character. Charset=CharSet.Unicode makes no difference. Any ideas anyone?

  • How to save the world from your computer?

    - by Francisco Garcia
Sometimes I miss the "help other people" factor within computer related careers. Sure that out there I could find many great projects improving society, but that is not common. However there are little things that we all can do to make this a better place beyond trying to erradicate annoynig stuff such as Visual Basic. You could join a cloud computing network such as World Community Grid to fight cancer. Write a charityware application such as Vim, improve an office IT infrastructure to support telecommuting and reduce CO2 emissions, use an ebook reader for saving paper... what else would you? which projects do you think can have an impact?

  • Format table header

    - by Ryan Erb
I have a table with slanted text in the header row, the only problem is that the text still makes the width of the columns way to large. Is there any way to squish together the table columns so that they are about the width of the select boxes? Or is there a way to place the text there without it in the header and maybe just use a <div> or <p>? Here is the fiddle I am working with: http://jsfiddle.net/t9Krg/1/ .slanted { -webkit-transform: rotate(-45deg); -moz-transform: rotate(-45deg); -ms-transform: rotate(-45deg); -o-transform: rotate(-45deg); transform: rotate(-45deg); white-space:nowrap; /* display:noblock; */ } The boarders around the header is just to see the extra spacing and will be removed later.

It is necessary to use a transaction? or SQL SERVER it self uses a transaction for this type of sentences.

  • Can i configure emacs to use gdb like a graphical debugger?

    - by Joey Carson
I'm pretty sure that this how other IDE's do it, e.g. on windows eclipse uses the output of gdb from MinGW (the windows port of GNU toolchain) to map where execution is in the source code and what values variables hold, etc. I'm stuck using gdb via a script that prepares our application in a chroot and does some other bootstrap for debug purposes. Once the script starts moving, the output is all gdb. Is there any way that I can configure emacs so that it will use gdb's output and allow for a sort of graphical debugger, comparable to that of eclipse or ms visual studio?
