Where does the Windows XP control panel get the value for the "Comments" field from? I'm writing an EXE control panel application, and it doesn't appear from the documentation that you can provide a value for that field.
I've just inherited a java application that needs to be installed as a service on XP and vista. It's been about 8 years since I've used windows in any form and I've never had to create a service, let alone from something like a java app (I've got a jar for the app and a single dependency jar - log4j). What is the magic necessary to make this run as a service? I've got the source, so code modifications, though preferably avoided, are possible.

I created a Windows 7 service in Visual Studio 2010. Test install crashed and left lots of debris: service shows in the list of services but will not start ('Referenced file does not exist'), is impossible to uninstall ('Action valid only for services that are installed') and is not shown in the Programs and Features aplet.
Is there a list of installed services that I could hack?
Thanks,
Jan
Windows Phone 7 has just been unveiled and right now there is no publicly available information to non-privileged developers/partners.
MS are announcing all details of the development chain at the Mix10 conference.
So until then this could be a good starting point/collection of online resources as they appear
EDIT: I've added the speculation tag so we can also accumulate speculation. Please mark speculative posts as such. once firm details are announced we can confirm or delete them
Hello everybody.
I use windows authentication and have one trouble: letter case of user name in User.Identity.Name is incorrect. For example, my user name is FOO-SERVER\Borovsky_D, but User.Identity.Name shows FOO-SERVER\borovsky_d. What is trouble? Have anybody ideas?
Hello, I am using visual studio 2010 on Windows 7 64bit.
I compiled and ran a simple application basically a thing a child could make.
Well the second it started to run, it froze my computer and rendered it unresponsive.
It continues to do this every time and for every application.
Any ideas why this is happening?
I started exploring CouchDB and I am interested in following:
Is there or will there be a Windows install?
If there is, is there a shared hosting provider that offers CouchDB?
Not knowing much about it, can it be somehow embedded in my application or bin deployed (don't laugh).
I would like to do this because i have half installed service because of installation failure which is just there non functioning.
How can we remove the windows service using the command line ?
The function midiOutGetDevCaps returns a structure MIDIOUTCAPS.
I'd need more specific information when querying a usb midi device on windows xp, in particular I'd need the information displayed under "Location" when opening the respective device using the Device Manager.
I need this information in order to programmatically distinguish between several MIDI Interfaces connected to a computer. Using midiOutGetDevCaps, I uniformly get "USB Audio Device" for every midi usb interface connected to the computer, so distinguishing between the interfaces is impossible.
I have a Windows 2008 server with two IP addresses assigned to a single NIC. The DNS settings are setup to register the connections's addresses on the DNS server. nslookup shows both IP addresses for the server name. How is name resolution done in this case, i.e. which IP address does the DNS server return for a host lookup? Or does it return both, and the client selects one of the addresses?

Hi there,
I need to write a script that takes the current path (%~dp0), transforms backslashes into forward slashes and passes it further to some command.
Due to the environment I'm working in the only option that I have is windows shell (not Powershell where the issue would not a problem).
Is it even possible to do that?
