• When it comes to updating all rows in a table, does the method of locking matter for performance?

  Question is a follow up to this. The SQL in question was UPDATE stats SET visits = (visits+1) And the question is, for the purpose of performance, does it matter if you lock all rows in stats in comparison to locking the table stats? Or, if the database uses a page-lock rather than a table/row lock?

• Negative Primary Keys

  Are there any repercussions using Negative Primary Keys for tables (Identity Increment -1, Identity Seed -1 in SQL Server 2005)? The reason for this is we're creating a new database to replace an existing one. There are similar tables between the two databases and we'd like the "source" of the information to be transparent to our applications. The approach is to create views that unions tables from both databases. Negative PKs ensures the identities don't overlap.

• Should I be regularly shrinking my DB or at least my log file?

  My question is, should I be running one or both of the shrink command regularly, DBCC SHRINKDATABASE OR DBCC SHRINKFILE ============================= background Sql Server: Database is 200 gigs, logs are 150 gigs. running this command SELECT name ,size/128.0 - CAST(FILEPROPERTY(name, 'SpaceUsed') AS int) / 128.0 AS AvailableSpaceInMB FROM sys.database_files;` produces this output.. MyDB: 159.812500 MB free MyDB_Log: 149476.390625 MB free So it seems there is some free space. We backup transaction logs every hour, diff backup 5 nights a week, full backup the other 2 nights of the week.
