Does writing zeros to an entire ssd (dd if=/dev/zero of/dev/sdX) give the same performance restoring effect that you get from a "secure erase", or does secure erase do something else as well?
I recently copied my win xp install from one hard to another(via ubuntu live cd)
Everything went well, except that all the hidden system files(boot.ini, ntdlr, io.sys) are no longer hidden.
I tried this:
attrib +s c:/IO.sys
No effect. The files are still visible even though the setting to hide system files is checked.
Any solutions? Thanks.
I would like to make a six second video using six images. Each second is sliding over one image from its top to its botom. Or some other motion effect – I would like to try several.
I tried
kdenlive
Imagination
Videoporama
PhotoFilmStrip
The first one has not enough settings (don't remember what exactly) and all those have rather poor quality – the resized picture is very "aliased" (like no quadratic filter was applied during resizing).
I have a that PC (Windows XP SP3) keeps losing time whereby it ends up being about 5 mins slow per day from all the other PCs and clocks about the place.
Is there a way to increase frequency of time server synchronisations to keep this in check? Or better yet, a reason for this issue, perhaps some recent windows update has this side effect I wouldn't know.
Please take a look at http://www.howcast.com/videos/186055-How-To-Create-a-Knol
Is there software to do this kind of effect using screen shots and with similar quality?
Note this is not Adobe Flash.
Thanks
I have English Windows 7 Professional with Hungarian keyboard language installed.
The English keyboard layout works as expected, but for the Hungarian layout some kind of "accent combining" is activated.
The effect of this ^+o becomes ô, ^+a becomes â, etc.
This is not helpful at all, since the accented characters of Hungarian are already mapped to keys, but it's really annoying because I have to type a non-combining character to actually get ^.
Is there any way to turn this "feature" off?
"Disable desktop composition" flag disables Aero (transparent glass border) effect for the duration of the application's run, which seems like all there is to "visual themes", but toggling the "Disable visual themes" option doesn't seem to do anything. What exactly are these "visual themes"? How does disabling them affect the system?
From what I can guess, a "visual theme" is a custom window border style around window content area created using hooks and WDM API calls, though I am prepared to be corrected.
I'm talking about the checked option:
Is it better to run a VM on a dual core hyperthreaded machine as a four core or as a two core VM.
The hyperthreaded 'virtual' cores are not as fast as the real cores. Does this effect the VM?
I don't think I properly understand the "expect" utility.
While searching for a way to automate a build process that involves jar signing, I came across expect, and thought I could use it to supply a password to jarsigner (whether having a password in a shell script is a good idea I understand the risks of).
expect "Enter Passphrase for keystore:"
Instead of catching this, the jarsigner sat waiting at that line.
Am I completely misunderstanding the point of "expect" and if I am, what can I use to achieve this effect?
My exim4 don't send any message. The logs says
2011-03-09 15:59:57 1PxKrl-00038i-BT malware acl condition: clamd: ClamAV returned /var/spool/exim4/scan/1PxKrl-00038i-BT: lstat() failed: Permission denied. ERROR
I supose that clamav (running clamd) does'nt have access rights on the mentioned file, but clamav is in the same group as Debian-exim (running exim4). Even changing the folder permissions to a+rwx has no effect.
Any idea where to look for failure reason ?
I have tried multiple drivers and multiple games ( Games tried, Darkfall and source based games).
Drivers tried ( 18x,29x and 24x).
When i disable SLI the games work perfectly.
A description of the blinking effect would be its like one of the video cards are not sending the image to screen.
S3 standby state.
Set power-on by usb device in bios.
Enabled standby power-on in device manager on the keyboard.
No effect.
Any ideas? Is it possible?
Is there a universal way to turn Windows 7 Aero desktop, all windows, etc into grayscale? I had an option to do this in Intel video drivers on my old laptop, now I have NVIDIA and don't know how to replicate this effect.
There might be a shader or filter that would cause Aero to render stuff into grayscale, but I was unable to find anything. Or must it be explicitly supported by video driver as a bonus?
When I print to PDF from iPhoto (7.1.5), my scans (which are all portrait) all end up sideways in the PDF file. I've searched high and low for some setting that will alter this. The only one that I could find that would plausibly affect this is the Layout menu item in the Print customisation view, but this has no effect. Even rotating the images doesn't change it.
Why is iPhoto printing my PDFs sideways, and how do I get it to stop?
I have Mini DV tapes, Hi8 or something lol. I have a camera that will not play them back, too choppy and cleaning has no effect. Is there a player, or adapter that can just read them into a computer? Thanks.
Hi
I have recently intalled Virtual PC and was wondering if it possible to make use of both of my monitors with it. I have managed to get a pseudo multi screen effect by connecting using Remote Desktop connection, but this isn't really what i wanted.
Is this possible?
Thanks

After a disk failure and a new build of Win7, IE9 locks up on most web pages including Bing. Running it as Admin works, and turning off Protected Mode also works. Neither of these was necessary prior to the rebuild and examination of colleagues' workstation config show that it's only my workstation with this quirk.
Can anyone suggest a remedy? I have tried bcdedit /set {current} nx AlwaysOff and a reboot, with no effect.
I am using a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5. I am new to this development environment, and previously worked on Windows.
I have tried when select a file (e.g. a ppt file on desktop), then I press Delete key on keyboard. The file is not deleted (seems no effect). How to delete a file from keyboard?
Thanks in advance.
I'm using the EXPORT feature in Hyper-V to move a large Virtual Machine (VM) over a 1GB network from a Windows 2008 to a Windows 2008 R2 box (200GB) and its so intense that I get the following icon on my destination Hyper-V manager:
Is this expected? Is there another way to get large file across the network and minimize this intense I/O effect? Anyones else ever seen that Do Not Enter sign? The other VMs are functional but slow, but I'm guessing that is expected.
I'd like to be able to launch either the AD user dialog, or the EMC mailbox dialog directly from a Powershell script to open a specific user. The workflow goes something to the effect of "Does everything look correct on this user? Y/N" to continuing on, or to bringing up the account to edit.
There's no reason to completely duplicate the functionality of these dialogs. I don't mind requiring that EMC or ADU&C already be open before the script is run, if necessary.
I'm looking for a utility to restart my video/display driver. The WDK seems like a good place to start. Does anybody know how to effect this?
I'm on Windows Vista Ultimate.
Applications (especially big Java and C++ ones) often shows up as multiple lines in htop, each have separate PID and separate nice level. Also application can spawn a lot of child processes (like as in aptitude update), so I need to affect both parent one (to make new children have new priority) and child ones (to bring the effect immediately, not after the child terminates)
How can I apply "renice" or "ionice" or "schedtool" to already launched big application?
When you have multiple websites and each of them maps the same physical path as virtual directory, how to quickly change the physical path of that virtual directory for all websites?
Note: I don't want to do use IIS Manager.
I tried changing the path (find and replace) in %SYSTEM%\system32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config, then restarted IIS, but the change hasn't taken effect. What am I missing?
I want Windows 7 to store thumbnails cache files in the same folder as the files (thumbs.db) instead of using the centralized location for all thumbnails (By default %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer). How would one achieve this effect?
Alternatively, if the former is implausible, I'd settle for no thumbnail caching at all, forcing Windows to regenerate thumbnails each time a folder is accessed.
