  • How do I mount a remote Linux folder in Windows through SSH?

    - by Jared
I'm a blind student currently in a system admin/shell programming class. Although ssh works fine for executing commands like ls, pwd, etc editors do not work well with my screen reader and an ssh session. I was wondering if it is possible to mount a Linux folder over ssh so it appears as a windows drive? This way I could edit any files I needed to with accessible software and not have to constantly use SCP to send files back and fourth.

  • Batch closes prematurely on a for /f command

    - by VonC
I have a batch file (in windows XP, with command extension activated) with the following line: for /f %%s in ('type version.txt') do set VERSION=%%s On some computer, it works just fine (as illustrated by this SO question), but on other it kills cmd (the console window just closes) Why ? Note: the computers seem to have a similar configuration: XpSP2, the user has administrative right, no 'Command processor" defined in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor...

  • What is the different purpose of .H header file and a IDL file?

    - by smwikipedia
I am studying COM so there're some basic questions puzzling me... I know that IDL file is used to describe the method definitions (or the so called 'contract' between software modules), and the .H header files contains something like a method prototype, which looks similar to what the IDL is meant for. So, why are these two things coexist? Isn't one enough? Many thanks.

  • Address of default RHEL YUM Repository

    - by El Guapo
Does anyone know the address of the default RHEL repository? We rent a server that is hosted by a third-party and one of our users seems to have "deleted" a lot of the RHN packages from our box; included was the rhn-yum-plugin. I really don't want to waste one our support requests on having them load up the DVD into the box and re-initializing the RHN software. Thanks.

  • How do I trigger Google Website Optimizer code on download?

    - by Shane N
I have a site that I'm optimizing using Google Website Optimizer where the goal is to have someone click on a link to download some software. But the google optimizer code that's provided will get triggered on any page where the link is on. Is there any way to have it execute only when someone actually clicks the download button? Thanks so much!

  • Android vs iPhone

    - by Moshe
I know iPhone development fairly well. From personal experience, how hard would it be for me to get into Android. I am concerned less about code than I am about distribution of my software, given the fragmentation of the Android OS on compatible devices.

  • C# Random generation

    - by Betamoo
I have just passed this article online: C# Corner and C# Corner and his article (a software developer with over 13 years of experience) recommended using System.Random as follows: private int RandomNumber(int min, int max) { Random random = new Random(); return random.Next(min, max); } Isn't that would give him the same number every time ?? Edit: So my question will become: How does Random choose its seed? a constant or current time value? Thanks

  • Building a life-critical System using Agile

    - by Ben Breen
Looking at the general trend of comments in my question about Building an Aircraft using Agile, the biggest problem other than cost appears to be safety. Do people feel that it is not possible to build a safe system (or prove it is safe) using agile? Doesn’t all the iterative testing mitigate this? Is it likely that a piece of software developed using agile will never be as reliable as counterparts such as waterfall?

  • What are real world examples of when Linked Lists should be used?

    - by oo
Another programmer was mentioning that they haven't found a use case for using a linked list data structure in any professional software in his career. I couldn't think of any good examples off the top of my head. He is mostly a C# and Java developer Can anyone give some examples where this was the correct data structure to solve a particular real world problem? Related: What is a practical, real world example of the Linked List?

  • How does one mirror a maven repository?

    - by Randy
Our company would like to mirror our Maven 2 Repository inside of the Amazon network. What software should one use to do this? We have looked into a Wagon-S3 but that sort of functionality is not desirable... we want the artifacts to already be present when we are ready for a build.

  • libiconv - iconv_open() default behavior?

    - by DooriBar
According to the documentation of iconv_open() over: http://www.gnu.org/software/libiconv/documentation/libiconv/iconv_open.3.html "//TRANSLIT" means that when a character cannot be represented in the target character set, it can be approximated through one or several characters. and: "//IGNORE" means that characters that cannot be represented in the target character set will be silently discarded. But what is the default behavior, when neither are specified? Thanks, Doori Bar

  • How do I create a deb package with basic dependencies?

    - by Sam
Hi so I am trying to create a deb package for a web application written in Java (it uses Apache Tomcat). My eventual goal is to start a repository that people can add to apt-get the software, but How do I make it so that the package knows to look for dependencies like tomcat, sun-java6-bin, and ant? How do I write an installer script to place the files and folders in the right place?

  • Message Translation Between Systems

    - by OldTimer
I find that most of my work involves creating shims so that different systems can communicate with each other. Is there any software solutions that handle this. I don't want to make my own. For example if we received a message like { a: 'abc', b: 1 } from System1, we might want to send { a: f('abc'), c: 'System1'} to System2. Know of anything like that?
